Rumor: Extended Skull Island: Reign of Kong Closure May Be Tied to Animatronic Issue
Skull Island: Reign of Kong has been unexpectedly closed at Universal Islands of Adventure for an extended stretch, and questions are starting to pile up about what may be keeping the attraction down.

Multiple guests have been posting in various Universal Orlando groups that they encountered the attraction closed during visits dating back to late August. What initially looked like a temporary bout of downtime has now stretched on for weeks, with Universal Orlando not publicly announcing a reopening date or giving an official reason for the closure. The attraction is still listed by Universal as a current offering, but guests continue to report finding it unavailable during park visits.
Rumors circulating among guests suggest the problem may involve the massive King Kong animatronic at the end of the ride, with some claiming the figure suffered a fire or other mechanical issue while repairs were underway. To be clear, none of that has been confirmed by Universal Orlando, and at this point these reports should be treated strictly as rumors. There has been no official confirmation of a fire, malfunction, or specific damage to the animatronic.
Still, given how long the attraction has remained unexpectedly unavailable, it seems increasingly plausible that this is more than routine daily downtime. A significant mechanical problem involving the Kong figure, another ride system, or some other major component would certainly help explain an unplanned closure lasting this long. For now, however, all we can do is wait for Universal to either reopen the attraction or provide more information.

Skull Island: Reign of Kong opened in 2016 and sends guests aboard massive expedition vehicles through the creatures and dangers of Skull Island before ending with a face-to-face encounter with a towering physical Kong animatronic. If that centerpiece is indeed involved in the current issue, repairs could potentially be more complicated than a typical attraction reset. We will continue watching for any movement at Skull Island and will update when Universal Orlando confirms a reopening or provides additional details.
