It has been 75 years since Walt Disney Animation Studios brought Lewis Carroll’s absurd, whimsical world to the big screen. To celebrate the 1951 animated classic, Disney is taking a look back at the art, history, and lasting legacy of Alice in Wonderland with screenings, educational initiatives, archival displays, and a newly restored version of the film!

Walt Disney was captivated by the dreamlike logic of Alice in Wonderland long before his studio released the 1951 animated feature. Early in his career during the 1920s, Walt created the Alice Comedies—a groundbreaking series of silent shorts that blended a live-action actress into animated surroundings.

Behind the Magic of Wonderland

Bringing Wonderland to life was no easy feat. More than half a million drawings were created during production to capture the colorful landscapes, whimsical music, and eccentric personalities.

Here are a few fascinating behind-the-scenes details highlighted for the 75th anniversary:

• Live-Action Reference Footage: Before animating, Disney recorded live actors on soundstages performing with pre-recorded dialogue. This gave animators realistic guides for movement, timing, and physical humor.
• Kathryn Beaumont: Disney Legend Kathryn Beaumont famously provided the iconic voice of Alice—and served as the physical live-action reference model for the character throughout production!
• A Song for Every Scene: Music was integral to the storytelling, resulting in a distinct soundtrack paired with legendary performances like Ed Wynn as the Mad Hatter and Jerry Colonna as the March Hare.
