Walt Disney World Resort Guests Turn Wishing Well Coins into Support for Teens in Need – Have you tossed a coin into a wishing well at a Disney Park? Maybe even into a water ride like “It’s A Small World” ride at The Magic Kingdom. Every day park visitors toss all manner of coins, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. Across the parks in the Orlando area, that adds up to a lot of change. What a guest might not realize, the coins are collected and then the funds are donated to nonprofit organizations. The total for the wishes made and tossed into various fountains and wishing wells in 2018… $20,000!
Over the past two decades park guests have made wishes with coins totaling more than $325,000. Favorite locations are the Cinderella Castle Wishing Well and the mote of It’s A Small World. Another less well-known location for casting a wishing coin into the water, the queue for Expedition Everest.
Routine water-feature maintenance involves coin collection. The coins collected during maintenance are cleaned and then deposited. Once a year the deposits are donated. For 2018, Community Based Care of Central Florida was selected to receive the $20,000 wishing coin donation. Community Based Care of Central Florida is the largest supporter of child welfare programs in Central Florida. The organization supports more than 3,000 children each day, with foster care and adoption to transitional and mentoring services.
“We are so humbled by the important work that Community Based Care of Central Florida provides to families of all shapes and sizes here in Central Florida,” said Tajiana Ancora-Brown, director of external affairs at Walt Disney World Resort. “These coins represent wishes made by our guests in a magical place, but the funding the coins provide will make a very real impact on our community.”
Part of the coin collection process is to select which programs of Community Based Care of Central Florida will benefit. Thousands of Walt Disney World Cast members took a vote and selected a youth transitional program to be the recipient of the wishing coin gift of $20,000. This program provides resources for foster care teens transitioning to adulthood – a safety net – in what can be difficult times.
Remember, the next time you toss a coin into the water at a Disney Park and make a wish, your wish and the wishes of thousands of other park visitors, along with Cast Members help and the hard work of Community Based Care of Central Florida, each act is helping make the dreams of teens in need come true!
