‘Wonder Woman 1984‘ Breaks Streaming Record on Opening Week. Both Disney-Pixar and Warner Bros. released new titles on Christmas Day. Warner Bros. released Wonder Woman 1984 on both digital and in theaters and Disney-Pixar opted for a Disney+ exclusively digital premiere for their new animated movie, Soul.
Though Disney+ saw nearly 2.3 million new app downloads over the holiday weekend beating out HBO Max’s 554,000 new downloads, Wonder Woman 1984 has beaten the standing SVOD premiere week record previously held by Hamilton and Mulan (2020) on Disney+. Disney-Pixar’s ‘Soul‘ is reportedly a very close second according to THR, having premiered on the same day as Wonder Woman 1984.
The release of WW84 also saw a larger spike in theater attendance, with the film making $16.7 million over opening weekend, the largest opening weekend at the box office since the pandemic began. Warner Bros. has announced all of their 2021 titles will be released via HBO Max and theatrically on the same day so audiences can enjoy the films wherever they are most comfortable.
