Will Smith Sings “Friend Like Me” From Aladdin on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He also discusses a bit about his role as the new ‘Genie’ in the live-action Aladdin film.
While visiting The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Will Smith and Jimmy discussed his upcoming film, Aladdin. During the discussion Smith started singing a bit of his version of “Friend Like Me”, one of the iconic pieces from the film sung by his character, Genie. Watch Will Smith’s ‘live’ performance here!
Smith sure hasn’t lost his singing skills since his time on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but now it’s Aladdin’s turn to be turned into a prince. Did you see that exclusive clip from the film? It made me giggle!
Smith and Fallon also discuss Will’s tribute post on Instagram to Robin Williams and how he was reluctant at first to portray such an iconic and beloved character. He mentions several times he didn’t even want to take the role of ‘Genie’ at first because he wasn’t sure he could give the character justice, but ultimately decided to give it a shot and put a new spin on the character.
Fans of the animated feature film and Broadway stage production of Aladdin are interested to see how this live-action adaption compares to the 90’s Animated Classic, many hoping this film does the story justice.
Though we can expect a different approach to Genie in this film, we are very excited to see Will’s performance. From the trailers alone the music sounds incredible and we will all be singing and dancing along in the theaters. There is also an unprecedented dance number in the film to “Prince Ali” that Smith claims has 1000 extras in the scene!
