The newest Pixar movie release is a huge hit among streaming audiences! More than 2.5 million U.S. households watched Pixar’s Turning Red during its first weekend streaming on Disney+.
It’s the third Pixar animation to go straight to streaming on Disney+, too. Pixar’s last two movies were Soul in late 2020 and Luca in the middle of 2021.
The streaming numbers already indicate the movie is a success for Disney+. Also, Director Domee Shi is the first woman filmmaker with sole directing credit on a Pixar feature film.
“Turning Red” is story about a young 13 year old Meilin “Mei” Lee. A awkward young Chinese Canadian girl going through the challenges of adolescence. Torn between her emerging identity and being her mothers dutiful daughter. One night she has a nightmare and awakes to discover she is a giant fluffy red panda.
Meilin later learns that her family shares ancestry with the species. Whenever she gets to excited or emotional she becomes a red panda! This film is made by Pixar Studios and Distributed by Walt Disney Motion Pictures.
The film features the voices of Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Hyein Park, Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, and James Hong.
“Turning Red” is also the first Pixar film to be filmed in Canada and the second to feature an Asian lead character after “Up.” This is also Domee Shi’s directorial debut.
