Things to Think about when Relocating to Live near Disney World

Central Florida, we are usually no more than an hour and a half away from its sun-drenched beaches. Of course, the being draws are world-renowned theme parks, and a vibrant lifestyle, often captivates the hearts of those considering a move to the region.

However, before taking the leap, there are several essential factors to ponder. From climate to lifestyle, here’s what my buyers should and do contemplate before relocating to Central Florida.

  1.    Climate and Weather: Central Florida’s climate is characterized by its mild winters and hot, humid summers. I got used to it quickly.  While the warm weather can be inviting, potential residents should prepare for the high humidity levels that are prevalent throughout much of the year. Hurricane season, typically from June to November, requires preparedness and planning, as these storms can impact the region.

  2.    Cost of Living: Before moving, it’s vital to research the cost of living in Central Florida. While housing prices can be relatively reasonable compared to other parts of the country, the cost of insurance, property taxes, and utility bills might vary.  While, in comparison to some areas like Metro NY/NJ and Florida cost of living is lower areas the country may not compare the same.   Balancing housing expenses with other financial needs is crucial. Relocating to Central Florida necessitates financial planning.

Consider the costs of the move, potential changes in income, and adjustments to your budget.  While I’d like to say I am crucial to finding you a home – a Lender is imperative to know your budget and out-of-pocket fees.  Two things in Florida help reduce the cost of living.  Homestead (where you reduce your tax burden on a primary residence) and Florida is one of only seven states that have zero state taxes.

  3.    Employment Opportunities: The Central Florida area boasts a diverse economy, with major sectors like tourism, healthcare, and technology. Researching job prospects and the industries that are prevalent can aid in making an informed decision about potential employment opportunities. Speak with you Leander if you are not just changing companies but also changing occupations.  It’s very important to stay in the same occupation – in other words, “quit after closing not before.”  As Realtors say.  Many one my buyers move here and become Disney Cast members. It’s a thrill to run into them at the parks.

  4.    Traffic and Infrastructure: Central Florida’s traffic congestion can be a concern, especially in metropolitan areas like Orlando. Familiarize yourself with the local traffic patterns and public transportation options to avoid surprises after moving.   Yes, some areas are “high traffic” I like to work with my buyers to see what they are used to- and I will always remark if traffic is light or heavy on the days we look.  I find traffic to be light- but I come from the NJ area.  It’s all a frame of reference.

  5.    Education and Schools: If you have children or are planning to start a family, the quality of local schools is paramount. Research the school districts and educational facilities in the area to ensure they align with your family’s needs and values. A real estate agent should not tell you about the ranking of the schools, ranks change and it’s about perspective. I often direct people to research and websites that will tell buyers the facts, from the school board and, attendees and neighborhood perspective. However, if someone tells me they heard schools were “great in area XYZ” I will also jump in to make sure they have the correct resources

  6.    Healthcare Facilities: Access to quality healthcare is a significant consideration. Central Florida is home to numerous healthcare institutions, but it’s wise to evaluate the proximity and reputation of hospitals and medical services in your potential new community. Many of my buyers have a hospital just minutes from their new homes.

  7.    Cultural and Recreational Opportunities: Central Florida is famous for its theme parks, but the region offers a rich cultural scene beyond just attractions. Museums, art galleries, theaters, and outdoor recreational areas abound. Ensure that the available activities match your interests and hobbies.  There is no lack of outdoor activities. Many of my buyers enjoy the West Orange Trail, Bok Tower, and many sub-division communities have their own parks and recreation areas.

  8.    Natural Environment: The region’s natural environment is diverse, with lakes, springs, and unique ecosystems. Consider whether you enjoy outdoor activities and whether the local environment aligns with your preferences.

  9.    Urban vs. Suburban vs. Rural: Central Florida offers a variety of living environments, from bustling city centers (Orlando) to quiet rural areas (Groveland, Minneola, or Auburndale) . Reflect on your preferred lifestyle and decide whether you want to be in the heart of the action or surrounded by more tranquility.  However, I find, that many people who want to live near WDW are only familiar with the City or Tourist areas.  I think the biggest part of a Realtor’s job is to introduce you to the diversity of the area. Winter Garden is just West of Disney for example and with many new homes and shopping.  While Windermere is more established I consider it a bedroom community, however, not so sleepy with Disney as its nearest neighbor. Or, Dr. Phillips which is truly a mix of urban AND suburban there is a great mix of golf communities, residential, and the famed restaurant row.  And the list goes on.

  10.    Financial Planning: Relocating to Central Florida necessitates financial planning. Consider the costs of the move, potential changes in income, and adjustments to your budget.

In conclusion, moving to Central Florida offers a vibrant and diverse lifestyle, but it’s crucial to undertake comprehensive research and introspection before making the decision. Assessing factors like climate, cost of living, job prospects, education, and community will help ensure a smooth transition and a fulfilling life in the Sunshine State.

By thoughtfully considering all aspects of the move, individuals can make an informed choice that aligns with their personal goals and aspirations.
