‘The Princess Bride’ Stage Musical to Debut in Chicago in Summer 2027
After years of anticipation, the beloved 1987 fantasy classic The Princess Bride is officially heading to the stage. A brand-new, Broadway-bound musical adaptation will make its pre-Broadway world premiere in Chicago at the James M. Nederlander Theatre, running from July 19 through August 22, 2027.
Lead producer Jeffrey Seller (Hamilton, Rent) revealed that adapting William Goldman’s iconic story into a stage musical has been a dream 40 years in the making, calling it the biggest production of his career.
To bring Westley, Buttercup, and the kingdom of Florin to life, Seller has assembled an all-star roster of Broadway heavyweights:
- Music & Lyrics: Written by Oscar-winning duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, best known for writing the music for Disney’s Frozen and Coco. Robert Lopez holds the rare distinction of being a double-EGOT winner (The Book of Mormon, Avenue Q).
- Book: Co-written by Tony Award winner Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone) and Tony nominee Rick Elice(Jersey Boys, Peter and the Starcatcher).
- Direction & Choreography: Directed by Tony winner Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!) with choreography by Tony winner Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton, In the Heights)
Attempts to adapt The Princess Bride for the musical stage date back nearly two decades, with past iterations involving notable theatrical figures including Adam Guettel, Steven Lutvak, and David Yazbek. The current iteration hit a major milestone with a private workshop reading earlier this year, leading straight to the newly announced 5-week engagement in Chicago before aiming for its eventual Broadway debut.
While official casting for the Chicago world premiere will be announced at a later date, group tickets are already on sale through Broadway In Chicago, with general individual ticket sales opening next month.
