Disney theme park fans have waited nearly two decades for this moment. In a historic announcement from Walt Disney Imagineering, Disney confirmed that the massive Yeti Audio-Animatronic inside Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom will officially be restored to full “A-Mode” motion.
The towering guardian of the Forbidden Mountain, long frozen in place under strobe lights—earning it the affectionate fan nickname “Disco Yeti”—is set to swipe at passing tea trains once again.

The History of the Forbidden Mountain Guardian
When Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain opened in 2006, the 25-foot-tall Yeti was the largest and most technologically advanced Audio-Animatronic figure ever constructed by Walt Disney Imagineering. Powered by a custom hydraulic boom mechanism capable of thrusting with more force than a jet engine, the beast swiped down at riders right before the final drop.
Shortly after the roller coaster opened, the intense mechanical stresses of the Yeti’s movements compromised the internal structural framework supporting the figure. To prevent ongoing structural damage to the mountain and track infrastructure, Disney locked the Yeti in place and introduced a strobe-light effect to simulate movement, affectionately known across the fan community as “B-Mode” or “Disco Yeti.”
Engineering the Return to A-Mode
Because the Yeti’s steel support structure is integrated directly into the ride’s foundational column grid—independent of the ride track and the mountain’s outer shell—repairing the mechanism historically presented severe logistical hurdles.
Walt Disney Imagineering has spent years developing modern composite materials, advanced servomotors, and localized structural dampers designed to handle high-torque articulation without sending excessive vibrational force through the mountain’s superstructure.

Disney will announce specific refurbishment dates and timelines for the mountain’s overhaul in the coming months. Once completed, guests climbing the icy peaks of the Anandapur Rail Service will face the full power and fury of the living Yeti once more.
