In the wake of Spirit Airlines’ sudden shutdown, Southwest Airlines is aggressively scaling up its Florida operations to bridge the service gaps left behind. This significant network expansion aims to restore connectivity across the state’s most critical travel hubs.

Just days after Spirit Airlines officially ceased operations on May 2, 2026, Southwest announced a sweeping expansion centered around Orlando International Airport (MCO). As one of the carrier’s primary operational hubs, MCO will see dozens of new and bolstered routes designed to stabilize the Florida travel market.

Southwest Chief Operating Officer Andrew Watterson emphasized the strategic importance of the region, stating, “Las Vegas and Orlando are foundational communities in our network, and places where Southwest long has offered the most service, seats, and nonstop travel options. We’re bringing more to our relationship in both places and adding to the hundreds of flights a day we already offer in both communities.”

With a local workforce of over 4,700 employees, Southwest is uniquely positioned to absorb the surge in travel demand following Spirit’s collapse. This move reinforces the airline’s commitment to Central Florida while ensuring that travelers have reliable, high-frequency alternatives for their upcoming summer plans.

Southwest

Southwest has unveiled a series of brand-new domestic and international connections linking Orlando and South Florida to key markets. These additions specifically target leisure-heavy destinations that were previously underserved or left vulnerable by Spirit’s departure.

New upcoming routes include:

  • Orlando to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands | February 2026
  • Orlando to Knoxville, Tennessee | March 2026
  • Orlando to St. Maarten | April 2026
  • Orlando to Little Rock, Arkansas | June 2026
  • Orlando to Wichita, Kansas | June 2026
  • Orlando to San Jose, California | November 2026
  • Miami to Las Vegas | March 2027

By introducing these flights, Southwest is reinforcing Florida’s tourism infrastructure and ensuring travelers have direct access to popular vacation spots across the Caribbean and the United States.

Beyond launching new destinations, Southwest is significantly boosting its existing presence in Orlando by increasing flight frequencies on 17 popular routes. Starting in June 2026, the airline will notably ramp up nonstop service between Orlando and Las Vegas to accommodate growing demand.

Enhanced service will be available between Orlando and the following cities:

  • Northeast: Baltimore, Buffalo, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Rochester
  • Midwest: Kansas City, Milwaukee, and Oklahoma City
  • South: Austin, Louisville, Memphis, Nashville, New Orleans, and San Antonio
  • West: Albuquerque and Las Vegas
  • Caribbean: San Juan, Puerto Rico

This strategic increase ensures more flexible travel options for passengers across the country looking to reach Central Florida’s vacation hubs.
