The Lion King Broadway Tour to End in 2027 Ahead of All-New Production

Big changes are on the horizon for Pride Rock! Disney Theatrical Group has announced that the long-running North American touring production of The Lion King will officially close on August 15, 2027. But Hakuna Matata—the Circle of Life isn’t stopping anytime soon. Disney is already preparing to launch a newly reconfigured touring production to take its place.

The current touring production launched back in 2002 and has built a legacy unmatched in theater history. Over its nearly 25-year run, the tour has:

  • Played over 10,000 performances across 291 engagements.
  • Visited 97 cities throughout North America.
  • Welcomed more than 28 million theatergoers, cementing its title as the longest-running and most-attended Broadway tour in North American history.

As touring logistics and venue capabilities have shifted over the past two decades, Disney is taking this opportunity to evolve the production for future generations.

The pause will allow Tony Award–winning director and designer Julie Taymor, along with the original creative team, to reimagine and reconfigure elements of the show. The goal of the new setup is to make the production more adaptable across a wider variety of North American venues while maintaining the signature scale, artistry, and emotional heart that fans have loved for decades.

In a joint statement, Disney Theatrical Group’s Managing Director Andrew Flatt and Executive Producer Anne Quart shared:

“For nearly a quarter century, this extraordinary tour has delivered the Broadway experience of The Lion King to millions of theatergoers throughout North America… The touring landscape has changed considerably since this production first launched in 2002, and the time has come to build the show for the audiences of the future.”

If catching The Lion King in your hometown has been on your bucket list, you still have time! The current tour will continue its scheduled route through August 15, 2027.

Disney has not yet announced the launch date, route, or specific changes for the upcoming reconfigured tour, but updates will be shared as development continues. (And don’t worry—the flagship Broadway production at the Minskoff Theatre in New York City remains untouched and continues to reign supreme!)
