Those who dismiss Walt Disney World as a ”children’s experience” have clearly never taken the time to explore the finer details of its beautiful resorts. Between the Grand Floridian’s ornate turn-of-the-century elegance and the Wilderness Lodge’s rustic charm, there seems to be a style to suit every taste and every age group. The latest resort to capture our attention (and imagination) is the Riviera Resort, a place of European design and artwork, unlike any other Disney resort. What has recently been revealed is the installment of new mosaic murals inside the resort, and though they are unfinished, they are already works of art.
When Walt Disney traveled through Europe in the 1930s, he sent a collection of over 300 books back to his studios for inspiration. These stories have inspired characters, films, artwork, and now two of them will grace the walls of the Riviera Resort. These murals will be placed in a walkway tunnel and will showcase the craftsmanship of talented Disney artists. The two stories selected will sit on opposing walls, meeting on the 20-foot ceiling above. It is confirmed that one of these walls will feature the story of Peter Pan, with Hook’s ship covered in pixie dust, flying through the night sky. The mosaic is made up of over 500,000 hand-cut tiles and is nothing short of a masterpiece.
The Riviera Resort remains under construction with its opening date slated for December 16th of this year. Guests are waiting with much anticipation to see the mosaics, along with many other works of beauty within.
