Hurricane Idalia Makes Landfall as Category 3, Tornado Watch Issued for Disney World and Orlando Area
Hurricane Idalia has officially made landfall in Florida as a potent Category 3 storm. Although the hurricane is not projected to traverse through Central Florida, inclement weather conditions are expected to persist.
An active tornado watch has been instituted for Orange County, Florida, which houses renowned attractions like Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort.
The Tornado Watch, sanctioned by the National Weather Service, spans a significant portion of the state, with a 60% likelihood of two or more tornadoes forming.
While the storm is anticipated to move swiftly across Florida, the state should brace for a substantial amount of rainfall, ranging from 4 to 8 inches, and certain regions along Florida’s west coast and panhandle might even encounter up to 12 inches.
In a bid to facilitate evacuation measures, the Florida Department of Transportation has eliminated tolls in select areas of the state.
Presently, operations at both the theme parks within Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort are continuing as usual, with both theme parks maintaining close vigilance over the weather conditions.
Walt Disney World has chosen to waive change and cancellation fees until September 5th and is extending a 50% discount on hotel accommodations to Florida residents in need of evacuation and to first responders involved in storm-related operations.

Central Florida, we are usually no more than an hour and a half away from its sun-drenched beaches. Of course, the being draws are world-renowned theme parks, and a vibrant lifestyle, often captivates the hearts of those considering a move to the region.
However, before taking the leap, there are several essential factors to ponder. From climate to lifestyle, here’s what my buyers should and do contemplate before relocating to Central Florida.
1. Climate and Weather: Central Florida’s climate is characterized by its mild winters and hot, humid summers. I got used to it quickly. While the warm weather can be inviting, potential residents should prepare for the high humidity levels that are prevalent throughout much of the year. Hurricane season, typically from June to November, requires preparedness and planning, as these storms can impact the region.
2. Cost of Living: Before moving, it’s vital to research the cost of living in Central Florida. While housing prices can be relatively reasonable compared to other parts of the country, the cost of insurance, property taxes, and utility bills might vary. While, in comparison to some areas like Metro NY/NJ and Florida cost of living is lower areas the country may not compare the same. Balancing housing expenses with other financial needs is crucial. Relocating to Central Florida necessitates financial planning.
Consider the costs of the move, potential changes in income, and adjustments to your budget. While I’d like to say I am crucial to finding you a home – a Lender is imperative to know your budget and out-of-pocket fees. Two things in Florida help reduce the cost of living. Homestead (where you reduce your tax burden on a primary residence) and Florida is one of only seven states that have zero state taxes.
3. Employment Opportunities: The Central Florida area boasts a diverse economy, with major sectors like tourism, healthcare, and technology. Researching job prospects and the industries that are prevalent can aid in making an informed decision about potential employment opportunities. Speak with you Leander if you are not just changing companies but also changing occupations. It’s very important to stay in the same occupation – in other words, “quit after closing not before.” As Realtors say. Many one my buyers move here and become Disney Cast members. It’s a thrill to run into them at the parks.
4. Traffic and Infrastructure: Central Florida’s traffic congestion can be a concern, especially in metropolitan areas like Orlando. Familiarize yourself with the local traffic patterns and public transportation options to avoid surprises after moving. Yes, some areas are “high traffic” I like to work with my buyers to see what they are used to- and I will always remark if traffic is light or heavy on the days we look. I find traffic to be light- but I come from the NJ area. It’s all a frame of reference.
5. Education and Schools: If you have children or are planning to start a family, the quality of local schools is paramount. Research the school districts and educational facilities in the area to ensure they align with your family’s needs and values. A real estate agent should not tell you about the ranking of the schools, ranks change and it’s about perspective. I often direct people to research and websites that will tell buyers the facts, from the school board and, attendees and neighborhood perspective. However, if someone tells me they heard schools were “great in area XYZ” I will also jump in to make sure they have the correct resources.
6. Healthcare Facilities: Access to quality healthcare is a significant consideration. Central Florida is home to numerous healthcare institutions, but it’s wise to evaluate the proximity and reputation of hospitals and medical services in your potential new community. Many of my buyers have a hospital just minutes from their new homes.
7. Cultural and Recreational Opportunities: Central Florida is famous for its theme parks, but the region offers a rich cultural scene beyond just attractions. Museums, art galleries, theaters, and outdoor recreational areas abound. Ensure that the available activities match your interests and hobbies. There is no lack of outdoor activities. Many of my buyers enjoy the West Orange Trail, Bok Tower, and many sub-division communities have their own parks and recreation areas.
8. Natural Environment: The region’s natural environment is diverse, with lakes, springs, and unique ecosystems. Consider whether you enjoy outdoor activities and whether the local environment aligns with your preferences.
9. Urban vs. Suburban vs. Rural: Central Florida offers a variety of living environments, from bustling city centers (Orlando) to quiet rural areas (Groveland, Minneola, or Auburndale) . Reflect on your preferred lifestyle and decide whether you want to be in the heart of the action or surrounded by more tranquility. However, I find, that many people who want to live near WDW are only familiar with the City or Tourist areas. I think the biggest part of a Realtor’s job is to introduce you to the diversity of the area. Winter Garden is just West of Disney for example and with many new homes and shopping. While Windermere is more established I consider it a bedroom community, however, not so sleepy with Disney as its nearest neighbor. Or, Dr. Phillips which is truly a mix of urban AND suburban there is a great mix of golf communities, residential, and the famed restaurant row. And the list goes on.
10. Financial Planning: Relocating to Central Florida necessitates financial planning. Consider the costs of the move, potential changes in income, and adjustments to your budget.
In conclusion, moving to Central Florida offers a vibrant and diverse lifestyle, but it’s crucial to undertake comprehensive research and introspection before making the decision. Hurricane Idalia is now Category 4 Hurricane Approaching Florida Landfall
At 6 a.m., the National Hurricane Center reported that Idalia had sustained its maximum winds of 130 mph, initially recorded during the 5 a.m. update, solidifying its status as a major Category 4 hurricane. Presently positioned about 55 miles to the west-northwest of Cedar Key and 95 miles to the south-southeast of Tallahassee, the storm is making north-northeastward progress at a speed of 17 mph.
The National Hurricane Center warned of the incoming ‘catastrophic storm surge and destructive winds’ as Idalia approaches, with landfall projected near the coastal areas of Taylor and Dixie counties, nestled between Tallahassee and Gainesville, before 9 a.m.
Speaking from the State Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee during Wednesday’s morning press conference, Governor Ron DeSantis remarked, ‘There will be impacts far beyond the eyewall.’ The press conference briefly experienced a power interruption while DeSantis was addressing the situation. He continued, ‘We have already had 11 tornado warnings and there are more tornadoes possible.’
‘Idalia could further gain strength prior to its arrival on the Florida Big Bend coast in a matter of hours,’ stated the hurricane center. ‘Although the hurricane is projected to weaken post-landfall, it’s anticipated to retain hurricane status as it traverses southern Georgia and approaches the coasts of Georgia or southern South Carolina later today.’
Idalia’s hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from its center, while tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 175 miles, as reported by the NHC.
When Idalia makes its presence felt in the sparsely populated Big Bend region, where Florida’s panhandle gracefully transitions into the peninsula, the storm’s winds could potentially escalate beyond 130 mph. A storm surge reaching as high as 12-16 feet is anticipated in certain areas along Idalia’s trajectory.
‘Do not jeopardize your life by engaging in any foolish actions at this point,’ cautioned DeSantis. ‘This storm is formidable. If you’re indoors, stay sheltered until it passes.’
The National Weather Service in Tallahassee termed Idalia ‘an unparalleled event,’ highlighting that no major hurricanes in recorded history have traversed the bay adjacent to the Big Bend.
On Tuesday, squalls spread across the Florida peninsula as the system advanced along the Gulf Coast. Collier County received tornado warnings afternoon as the storm bands moved through. The hurricane is projected to continue its northward to north-northeastward journey prior to the impending landfall on Wednesday morning. Subsequently, it is expected to shift northeastward and then east-northeastward, moving into Georgia and skimming the coasts of the Carolinas late on Wednesday or early Thursday.
The National Weather Service expanded the tornado watch to cover 26 Florida counties until 3 p.m., including Central Florida counties such as Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole, Sumter, and Volusia.
Tornado warnings were issued for east Orange and Seminole shortly before 4:30 a.m. due to indications on radar, with an earlier overnight warning in Osceola County.
As of Wednesday at 6 a.m., over 60,000 customers were grappling with power outages across the state, according to poweroutage.us.
Governor DeSantis is scheduled to hold multiple press conferences throughout the day, streamed on thefloridachannel.org and his official Facebook page.”
