Writers Guild Strike Tentative Agreement Reached

The Writers Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have tentatively settled their strike, which lasted for almost five months. Unsurprisingly, members are expressing their thoughts, many of which are filled with joy, on various social media platforms. A tentative deal was announced via X Twitter by the Writers Guild Social Media Account.

Actor Michael Chiklis shared his joy saying, “Phenomenal news! Now let’s see this through and get us all back to work!” The Screen Actors Guild continues to negotiate with the studios on their end to bring a resolution to the work stoppage that has been going on for months.

Many of the writers will stand in solidarity with the actors until a deal is reached there too. Greg Cope White said, “I’m not hanging up my Hokas until SAG AFTRA has a fair contact as well, see you on the picket lines”

Of all the reactions via social media, one encapsulates the shared experience from the writers perspective better than any other. It was penned by Justine Bateman: “Being in a union and going on strike with it, is the type of thing that’s become unfashionable in society. It means you are sacrificing for others; committing to something bigger than yourself; and putting in effort because those in the past did it for you, & now it’s your turn.”

“It may be new terms that affect only the newest of the union’s members, or the part-timers, or the elders, and not necessarily you, specifically. But that’s not the point. “You” are not the point. All of you are the point. The union, the members as a whole, is the point. Being in a union is one of the most fantastic opportunities in life, to have the chance to stand up for the group, for the strongest and the weakest alike. What a magnificent experience in which to participate.”

Many of the stars of the work stoppage were the writers whose names were not prominent. They are the ones who are most threatened by the advent of AI and the changing landscape of streaming television. It is for them that the SAG/AFTRA work stoppages are most important. With the tentative deal reached, Late Night Talk shows could return as soon as October. Pressure now mounts on the studios to conclude negotiations and reach a deal with actors so that creativity can once again flourish in Hollywood.
