Disney is cracking down on third-party tour guides at Walt Disney World
Walt Disney World is reportedly cracking down on so-called third-party tour guides. These private companies, which are not affiliated with Disney, offer tour-guide services at the theme parks, often promising items such as customized itineraries and line-skipping. According to reporting by The Washington Post, the latest crackdown is a bit of a surprise to the tour guides as well as the guests who book their services.
Disney parks are famous for their magical experiences, with their immense popularity resulting in high crowd levels. The large crowds tend to lead to long waits for attractions, and the increase in complexity of visiting Walt Disney World has resulted in many guests looking for help. Guests looking for a more streamlined day can utilize one of the official Disney VIP Tour Guides, who can offer a range of services, including:
Pre-arrival planning
A flexible start time
Visits to multiple theme parks
Utilizing Lightning Lane entrances for attractions
Insight from a highly knowledgeable VIP Tour Guide
The official Disney tour guides are pricey, with costs ranging from $450 to $900 per hour. Guests looking for similar services at a lower price point may turn to one of the private tour companies, which promote similar services at a much lower cost (according to the Washington Post, the private tour guides generally charge between $150 and $300 per hour).
These private guides often attract customers by promising similar benefits to the official VIP tour guides. Disney has noted many of these third-party tour guides attempt to offer these services by manipulating Disney’s services or even violating park rules, a practice that Disney views as unfair and disruptive to other guests.
Disney’s new policy aims to curb these practices by identifying and banning third-party guides who misrepresent their services and/or break park rules. The guides often learn about the crackdown upon attempting to enter the parks, when they discover their annual pass has been marked as void and they receive a trespass notice. The trespass orders, issued by the Sheriff’s department, ban them from entering any area of the Walt Disney World property, including the theme parks, resort hotels, or Disney Springs. The Washington Post article noted one tour guide was advised they would be able to appeal their trespass notice one year following its issuance.
The decision also impacts the livelihood of these third-party guides, many of whom depend on this income. They argue that their services help manage park congestion and provide a beneficial experience for visitors. Many of the third-party tour guides have had to either pivot their business to other parks/areas or find a whole new industry to work in.
As Disney enforces these new guidelines, the landscape of guided tours in their parks is set to change. While Disney ensures quality and fairness through its official tours, the debate around access, cost, and guest experience in the world of theme park entertainment continues.

Disney’s Blizzard Beach to Temporarily Close Due to Inclement Weather
In an unusual turn of events, Disney’s Blizzard Beach water park is set to close its doors on Saturday, December 16, 2023, as Central Florida braces for strong storms. The decision comes in the interest of visitor safety, with forecasts predicting 2 to 3 inches of widespread rain and peak wind gusts reaching 35 mph.
The closure is a precautionary measure to ensure the well-being of guests and staff as inclement weather sweeps across the region. Disney is known for its commitment to guest safety, and temporary closures due to weather conditions are a standard protocol to maintain a secure environment within its parks.
The closure announcement coincides with the annual refurbishment of Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park, which is already closed to visitors during this period. This unexpected closure of Blizzard Beach provides an unusual situation where both of Disney’s iconic water parks are simultaneously out of operation, creating a unique scenario for park enthusiasts.
Blizzard Beach, themed as a ski resort that melted into a water park, offers a thrilling array of water slides and attractions. Its closure on Saturday is expected to be a temporary setback, with the park likely to resume normal operations once the weather conditions improve and it is deemed safe for visitors.
Disney officials have expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the closure but emphasize the importance of prioritizing the safety of guests and staff. Visitors who had plans to enjoy Blizzard Beach on December 16 are encouraged to check for updates on Disney’s official website or contact Disney Guest Services for information on potential rescheduling or refunds.
As Central Florida experiences the impact of adverse weather, Disney’s decision to close Blizzard Beach underscores the company’s dedication to providing a secure and enjoyable experience for its visitors. While weather-related closures are rare, they serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the elements and the importance of safety in the realm of theme park operations.
Disney’s Steamboat Willie, Minnie, Pooh, and Tigger will Become Public Domain in 2024
In 2024, Disney’s Steamboat Willie, Minnie Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, and Tigger are set to join the public domain, marking a significant moment in the world of intellectual property and copyright law. Let’s delve into the stories of these iconic characters and explore the implications of their transition into public domain.
Steamboat Willie: The Birth of Mickey Mouse
Steamboat Willie, released on November 18, 1928, is a groundbreaking animated short film produced by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. This black-and-white cartoon is not only a milestone in animation history but also introduces the world to Mickey Mouse, who quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The film is known for its synchronized sound and music, a novelty at the time, and it laid the foundation for the Disney empire. With Steamboat Willie entering the public domain, it means that the early adventures of Mickey Mouse will be more accessible for creators to remix and reinterpret.
“More modern versions of Mickey will remain unaffected by the expiration of the Steamboat Willie copyright, and Mickey will continue to play a leading role as a global ambassador for the Walt Disney Company in our storytelling, theme park attractions, and merchandise,” Disney’s said in a statement.
Minnie Mouse, Mickey’s sweetheart, made her debut alongside him in Steamboat Willie. Over the years, Minnie has evolved into a beloved character in her own right, captivating audiences with her charm and distinctive polka-dot attire. As Minnie enters the public domain, artists and storytellers have the opportunity to explore new facets of her character and create fresh narratives that build on her rich history.
Winnie the Pooh: A Hundred Acre Wood Classic
Created by A.A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh first appeared in the story “Winnie-the-Pooh” in 1926, with illustrations by E.H. Shepard. The rights to Winnie the Pooh were later acquired by Disney, leading to the creation of countless films, TV shows, and merchandise. With the character entering the public domain, new adaptations and interpretations of the lovable bear and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood can emerge, offering a chance for different storytellers to put their spin on these timeless tales.
Tigger: Bouncing into Public Domain
Tigger, the energetic and bouncy tiger from A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh stories, is another character set to become part of the public domain in 2024. Known for his exuberant personality and love for bouncing, Tigger’s inclusion opens the door for artists and creators to explore his adventures in unique ways.
The transition of these iconic characters into the public domain has far-reaching implications. It means that anyone can use, remix, and build upon these characters without seeking permission or paying licensing fees. This can lead to a resurgence of interest in these classic characters, inspiring new generations of artists, writers, and filmmakers to breathe fresh life into these timeless creations.
However, it’s essential to note that only the early versions of these characters, such as those depicted in Steamboat Willie and the original Winnie the Pooh stories, will be part of the public domain. Later adaptations and distinctive elements created by Disney will still be protected by copyright.
“We will, of course, continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright,” the company said.
In conclusion, the entry of Steamboat Willie, Minnie Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, and Tigger into the public domain in 2024 marks a momentous occasion for creativity and innovation. It opens the floodgates for a wave of reinterpretations, adaptations, and reimaginations that will undoubtedly shape the legacy of these beloved characters for years to come.
