Six Flags, Cedar Fair Merge to Form Theme Park Giant

Hold onto your roller coaster hats! The theme park industry has a new titan. Six Flags and Cedar Fair’s blockbuster $8 billion merger is official, forming a behemoth of live entertainment experiences. This combined company boasts a massive portfolio of 27 theme parks, 15 water parks, 9 hotels and resorts, and even includes safaris, marinas, and other unique destinations across North America.

“Today marks a significant milestone for our company, shareholders, guests and associates, unlocking higher value and greater opportunities to deliver engaging entertainment experiences,” said Richard Zimmerman, president and CEO of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation.

Theme park giants Cedar Fair (owning Knott’s Berry Farm and Cedar Point) and Six Flags (with Six Flags Over Texas, Magic Mountain, and Great Adventure) finalized their merger plans announced last year.

The merger promises a strategic advantage. By combining locations, the new company will have a stronger presence in sunny states like Florida, Texas, and California, allowing for year-round operations and increased revenue stability compared to seasonal parks in the Northeast and Midwest. Additionally, the combined entity boasts a powerful IP portfolio. Six Flags brings its Warner Bros. Discovery partnership with DC Comics and Looney Tunes characters, while Cedar Fair adds the beloved Peanuts universe to the mix, offering even more diverse entertainment experiences for park-goers.

Six Flags Entertainment Corporation takes the reins! Trading under the fitting ticker symbol “FUN” on the New York Stock Exchange, the merged company will be led by a team primarily comprised of seasoned Cedar Fair executives, including incoming CEO Zimmerman. Six Flags’ former CEO, Bassoul, will assume the role of executive chairman.

The theme park industry is experiencing a post-pandemic boom, with industry titans like The Walt Disney Co. and NBCUniversal leading the charge. Both are investing heavily in park expansions. Disney is planning major upgrades in California and Florida, along with expanding its cruise line. Meanwhile, Universal is gearing up for a massive new park in Orlando next year, plus a smaller, family-oriented park in Texas, right in Six Flags’ territory.

While the new Six Flags may not rival the scale of Disney or Universal’s Florida and California giants, it boasts a wider geographic reach with numerous parks across North America, many strategically located far from its competitors’ main hubs. This strategic spread could be a key differentiator in the competitive theme park landscape.

Disney Ever After in Disney Springs’ Town Center has ditched the designer digs for a charming selection of character plushes and a must-try experience for creative minds: build-your-own headbands! This isn’t your first rodeo though, Disneyland Resort fans – the concept debuted there earlier this year. Keep your eyes peeled for the signage outside Disney Ever After to get in on the headband-making fun!

The store’s displays are decked out in colorful awnings that nod to your favorite Disney characters, while the artwork takes inspiration from the adorable world of Disney Emojis. Construction walls have appeared at Plaza del Sol Caribe Bazaar, the Pirates of the Caribbean gift shop at Magic Kingdom, enveloping the courtyard area. While the gift shop remains open, the walls do make walking through the gift shop a bit more challenging.

The construction walls enclose the central open-air section of the shop, an area that typically offers a tropical respite amidst the swashbuckling excitement of the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. The reason for the construction remains a mystery. Disney has not provided any official explanation for the work being done. However, there are rumors circulating that it might be for a new pirate-themed tavern set to open in Magic Kingdom.

The EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival presented by CORKCICLE is not only a culinary adventure but also a musical feast for the senses. This year, the Eat to the Beat Concert Series presented by Florida Blue is back with a diverse lineup that promises to delight audiences of all ages.

Twenty Riders Rescued from Incredicoaster at Disney California Adventure Amid Heatwave

Twenty riders were safely evacuated from the Incredicoaster at Disney California Adventure on Sunday afternoon after the ride malfunctioned and became stuck on the track. The incident occurred during a scorching heatwave, with temperatures reaching the high-80s.

Disneyland employees, equipped with safety harnesses, sprang into action, handing out umbrellas to shield stranded riders from the sun while rescue crews worked to free them from the 120-foot-tall roller coaster. The evacuation process took over an hour.

The Incredicoaster remained closed for the rest of the day following the malfunction. The cause of the breakdown is currently unknown. This incident follows another stall on the ride reported just a day earlier.

Disneyland released the following statement:

The safety of our guests is a top priority, and we are grateful for the quick response of our cast members and rescue crews. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and are working to ensure the Incredicoaster is back up and running as soon as possible.

New Menu Items from Sleepy Hollow in the Magic Kingdom

Sleepy Hollow in the Magic Kingdom has recently updated its menu, and we were excited to pop in and try some of the new offerings. This beloved spot is known for its tasty treats, and the new items do not disappoint. We sampled the Mickey Waffle with Chocolate-Hazelnut Spread and Bananas for $8.49 and the Mickey Waffle with Sweet-and-Spicy Maple Chicken for $11.59.

The Mickey Waffle with Chocolate-Hazelnut Spread and Bananas comes served with a generous spread of chocolate-hazelnut, fresh banana slices, and a dollop of whipped cream. The waffle itself was freshly made, perfectly crispy on the outside, and soft and warm on the inside. This combination was not only delicious but also quite filling, making it a delightful option for breakfast or a sweet snack.

We also tried the Mickey Waffle with Sweet-and-Spicy Maple Chicken, which featured a honey-sriracha glaze and parsley flakes. The chicken was more sweet than spicy, making it a unique and enjoyable dish. However, we recommend adding a bit of extra sauce or syrup to the waffle for added flavor.

While we enjoyed our meal overall, it’s worth noting that these new items are more of a sit-down, knife-and-fork experience, unlike the previous grab-and-go sandwiches. Despite this change, the quality and taste of the new menu items make Sleepy Hollow worth a visit on your next trip to the Magic Kingdom.
