Disney World’s Tomorrowland Transit Authority to reopen September 1st

Article from Peggy Macdonald at the Examiner

The reopening of the Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland Transit Authority ride has been postponed. Originally scheduled to reopen August 25, the TTA (formerly the WEDWay People Mover) will resume operations September 1.

The TTA takes guests on a leisurely tour through several of Tomorrowland’s most popular rides, including Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway, and Space Mountain, which is currently closed for refurbishment. Although TTA riders sometimes catch a glimpse of Space Mountain with the lights on when there are technical difficulties with the ride, Disney typically conceals major renovations by erecting temporary barricades that block the view of the ride in transition.

The TTA is a classic Disney World ride that is especially popular with guests who enjoy sitting down for several minutes in shaded comfort. The ride offers breathtaking views of Cinderella Castle and provides a bird’s eye perspective of the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway. Another reason to ride the TTA is that it typically has one of the shortest lines at the Magic Kingdom. The flat escalators provide an awkward-feeling calf stretch on the way up, followed by a virtual foot massage on the way down.

The ride has been in need of refurbishment for years. The audio track has grown stale, and a scene near the Mickey’s Star Traders gift shop has been out of order for several years. The scene depicts a futuristic space traveler whose spaceship has broken down. A service droid used to move back and forth on a ramp, but now the droid rests motionless. Steam used to rise from the broken ship, but now there is no action. With any luck, the refurbished TTA will have a new scene at this location. It will be wonderful to see the refurbishment barricades come down before the September 1 reopening.

Disney’s Poyno is out now – Review here

disney ponyo 1
disney ponyo 1

You might think “Ponyo,” Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki’s new animated film, is the anti-“Up.” That recent Disney/Pixar smash was about the joys of soaring into the clouds; “Ponyo,” also distributed by Disney, makes its home in the sea. Where “Up” concerned itself with the grown-up problems of an elderly widower, “Ponyo” stays resolutely in the point of view of its 5-year-old hero, to the point that adults might worry it might not be for them.

So what do the two movies have in common, besides a Disney logo? They’re both masterpieces, and they both draw from deep wells of beauty and wisdom to offer intense moviegoing pleasure to the very young, the very old and everyone in between.

Ponyo, a magical goldfish (voiced by Noah Cyrus, sister of Miley), takes a trip to the surface and befriends 5-year-old Sosuke (Frankie Jonas, younger brother of the musical Jonases), who lives with his mother Lisa (Tina Fey) in a house on a mountain peak overlooking the harbor. Later, when Ponyo sprouts legs and escapes her father, a god of the sea (Liam Neeson), to return to Sosuke, the balance of nature is endangered and mountainous waves inundate the boy’s entire island.

Disney Advance Dining Reservations going back to 180 days

Multiple sources confirm that Walt Disney World is set to begin accepting Advance Dining Reservations 180 days in advance of guests’ arrival date.

On October 27, 2009, Disney will begin accepting dining reservations 180 days in advance of the arrival date for guests with confirmed reservations at a Walt Disney World resort. Here is a quick summary of how the changeover will impact guests with reservations in early-2010:

October 26, 2009: Guests with arrivals through January 24, 2010 can make ADRs (90 days in advance.)

October 27, 2009: Guests with arrivale through April 25, 2010 can make ADRs (180 days in advance.)

Expect heavy call volumes and website traffic the week of October 27th with nearly 3 months’ worth of guests simultaneously gaining access to book their dining reservations.

For several years Walt Disney World guests were able to obtain their dinign reservations 180 days in advance. That changed in December 2008 when Disney announced that the ADR timeframe was being reduced to 90 days prior to arrival.

Some are crediting guest outcry for this return to the longer booking period. The longer booking window would seem to favor Disney Vacation Club members, many of whom are accustomed to booking their room reservations 11 months in advance.

Advance Dining Reservations can be made by calling 407-WDW-DINE or by visiting http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/dining/.

Man guilty of groping Minnie Mouse at DisneyWorld

John William Moyer will face sentencing for groping Minnie Mouse at Disney World.
Video at the bottom of the post.

A jury this morning found John William Moyer guilty of groping of a woman playing Minnie Mouse at Walt Disney World.

Moyer, 60, of Pennsylvania, was convicted of misdemeanor battery for the June incident this morning.

Judge Wayne Shoemaker imposed the sentence this morning.

“The verdict reinforces the fact that this type of behavior is not acceptable,” said Walt Disney World spokeswoman Zoraya Suarez. Disney officials also banned Moyer from entering any of the company’s resorts, Suarez said.
