'American Idol' Finalists Net Big Bucks from Disney

The highlight for me in this article is where they talk about American Idol winner Kris Allen and the big bucks he has earned from various companies including Disney.

In addition to a generous $350,000 advance for his first album (not including recording costs), half of which he got after the show ended and the rest when he finished his self-titled debut, Allen was paid $100,000 to help promote “The American Idol Experience” attraction at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and another $100,000 for spending a day filming dialogue for the attraction and taping vocals for the Walt Disney World Christmas Parade TV show. He also reportedly earned another $100,000 advance on royalties from a three-year merchandising contract, which allows 19 Entertainment to use his image to promote the show and related products.

Snow White and the seven dwarfs — along with other classic Disney characters — are heading to the Getty.

The Getty Conservation Institute said Wednesday that it is partnering with a division of Disney to study the deterioration that can occur in plastics — specifically, the kind used in animation cels.

The study will be conducted as a partnership between the Getty Institute in Brentwood and the Disney Animation Research Library, which is located in Glendale.

Tom Learner, a senior scientist at the Getty, said in an interview that the research will take place at both locations, with some of the cels traveling to the Getty for in-depth analysis. He said the study, which is likely to take three years to complete, is intended to explore the reasons why certain cels are deteriorating and to possibly come up with ways to slow the deterioration process.

“The end point of the study isn’t restoration — that would be something further down the line,” said Learner. The cels tagged for study date as far as the 1930s, he estimated.

Among the recognizable Disney characters headed for the microscope are Snow White, Pinocchio and at least one character from the movie “Fantasia.”

Dark Days at Disney..Is this the future Walt Disney wanted?

Has anyone else noticed how dark things are getting at Disney?

For example I can’t tell you how many news articles I have seen roll in my inbox the past week talking about Alice in Wonderland clothes that are for sale at Hot Topic. Most articles have catchy buzz words in it like Dark or Gothic in the titles. Previously I have seen some of the clothing on Amazon. While they are very cool, they are very different than any of the other clothing Disney has released in the past.

I posted an article this morning about the new Haunted Mansion Comic Book packed with skeletons, zombies and corpses. I understand Disney is trying to target teen boys, but it kinda goes against the image Walt Disney created a long time ago. I can’t really pass judgement on the comic till I read it.

Let’s not forget Epic Mickey the video game. The game looks awesome and its cool to see Walt Disney’s beloved character in a different light. In the beginning there was alot of controversary around this game but as we get closer to the September 2010 release date things have settled down and people seem to be okay with it.

Finally the most recent Disney movie Princess and the Frog has elements in it that I have never seen any any childrens movie before. The scene with the Shadowman freaks my daughter out and is darker than anything Disney has ever released. Overall the past few movies from both Disney and Pixar are very dark in nature. For more information check out this article about Disney’s New Movie Theme.

Overall I am still undecided about all the changes Disney is introducing across the board. Movies, video games, clothing, etc. It seems Bob Iger is trying to changing the very image we have all come to love..

What do you think about all the changes? Do you prefer the classic Disney of the past or do you like this new dark mysterious route they are heading. Let us know in the comment section below.

Disney Interactive Studios Announces Wii Version of Clue - Disney Guilty Party

For some reason this reminds me an awful lot of Clue…

Should be a lot of fun to play on the Wii. Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.

There’s been a crime… can you follow the clues to find the Guilty Party? Disney Interactive Studios today announced Disney Guilty Party, a family-friendly mystery party game being developed exclusively for the Wii(TM) console. Created by Wideload Games, Disney Interactive Studios’ Chicago development studio, Guilty Party is scheduled for release in the second half of 2010.

Guilty Party tells the thrilling tale of the Dickens Detective Agency as they solve crimes set in motion by the master criminal known as Mr. Valentine. Up to four players can solve crimes in a variety of locations all over the world to unlock the secrets of Mr. Valentine’s grand scheme.

Guilty Party offers both cooperative and competitive gameplay for all ages. Players choose a detective and take turns exploring the environment to uncover clues to discover the culprit’s identity. When players have enough evidence, they can accuse their prime suspect and try to solve the case.

“Mysteries are one of the world’s most beloved forms of storytelling, and Guilty Party brings mysteries to Wii in a way that the whole family can play together,” said Tom Kang, studio head and general manager, Wideload Games. “Everyone loves a good mystery, especially when they get to be the detective.”

Players step into the shoes of the Dickens family and work together to explore crime scenes and play mini-games to collect clues and interrogate suspects. Guilty Party transforms the Wii Remote(TM) into classic detective tools: a magnifying glass, a flashlight, a lock-pick, a fingerprint kit, and more. Players then discuss and piece together the clues in their detective notebooks to deduce the identity of the culprit.

The Dickens family tracks Mr. Valentine across the globe, from a high-speed train to a leaky aquarium to many other locations to solve new mysteries. Once the mysteries are solved, players can play again with a new set of clues, suspects and mini-games with a different experience every time. It takes more than quick reflexes to win, it also takes quick wits.

“We’re packing an amazing amount of play-time into a single game,” said Patrick Curry, game director, Wideload Games. “Guilty Party is a bit like a board game, since families can play each mystery over and over again and never have the same experience twice.”

Guilty Party is the first new franchise developed by Wideload Games for Disney Interactive Studios. The game’s characters and locations are inspired by classic detective lore, with the storytelling, unique humor and art style that have distinguished Wideload Games. Guilty Party will have players applying logic to solve the mysteries while laughing at the wacky cast of characters, situations and animated scenes.

“Wideload Games is a leader in unique creative games that keep players entertained and amused for hours,” said Craig Relyea, senior vice president of global marketing, Disney Interactive Studios. “Guilty Party was a natural fit for Disney and the beneficial working relationship led to the highly creative studio joining our portfolio of talented studios.”

In September 2009, Disney Interactive Studios acquired Wideload Games and studio founder Alexander Seropian took on the role of vice president of creative at Disney Interactive Studios in Glendale, Calif.

Disney Guilty Party is Rating Pending by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).

Meet the Disneyland Fire Department

Fortune Magazine had an interesting article about the Disneyland Fire Department. Which I didn’t even know existed. It was interesting how they are always on set for the various TV shows like Flash Forward to Disney movies like Pirates. Check it out.

When the script for the science-fiction TV series “FlashForward” called for a scene inside a burned-out restaurant, the crew assembled the makeshift eatery and set it on fire.

Watching it all was Jim Capodieci. As captain of Disney’s fire department, he had to make sure the production crew was safe. Standard fireman stuff. The tricky part? The faux restaurant had to look just right. And one false move and the whole set could burn.

Making sure staged fireballs don’t turn into real ones is just part of the job for Capodieci. His team stands ready whenever a scene from “General Hospital” requires a car to blow up, or crews need to pull off crucial fire stunts in films like “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

But Disney’s firefighting team, based in Burbank, Calif., has a more serious mandate: to protect the company’s workforce in a part of the country that’s prone to fires and sits smack on top of an earthquake fault line.

Today the Walt Disney Studios Fire Department, launched in 1989, is like any other around the country — it has its own station, its own fire engine, and 15 firefighters. (The one exception: no Dalmatian. You figured they would have one of those, right?)
