Disney Farewell for Bobby Cox from ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex

Today was the Atlanta Braves’ final 2010 home spring training game at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and also the last spring training game for manager Bobby Cox, who is retiring after this season. Cox, 68, has been at the Braves’ helm since the sports complex at Walt Disney World opened in 1997, so it was fitting that Disney sent him off in grand style.

Before Wednesday’s game against the Houston Astros, Disney Sports Marketing Director Faron Kelley and Mickey Mouse congratulated Cox and presented him with an engraved “Mousekar” – our version of an Oscar, Mickey Mouse style.

Behind The Scenes: New Disney Dream Experiences

What do you get when you mix technological innovation with Disney’s creative imagination and set it out to sea? Short and simple – the Disney Dream cruise ship! We recently took a trip to the secret labs of Walt Disney Imagineering and got a behind-the-scenes glimpse at some amazing new experiences in development for the Disney Dream.

Enchanted Art

As you walk around the Disney Dream, pay close attention the artwork hanging from the walls. You see what appears to be traditional framed art (photos, oil paintings, etc.) may actually be Enchanted Art. These special pieces of art will magically come alive when you stop to admire the artwork.

Detective Game

Walt Disney Imagineering is also working on a really cool concept for an interactive adventure game that uses Enchanted Art and spans the entire Disney Dream. Equipped with a special detective device, guests will travel through the ship revealing secret clues hidden within the Enchanted Art to solve a mystery.

Disneyland Jungle Cruise is now a real jungle

This article c

The animals in Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise may not be real. But the jungle is.

Since the ride opened in 1955, the land around the ride’s river has transformed into its own ecosystem.

Disney workers have switched the plant makeup from mostly leftover orange trees from the the land’s previous owner to those more like a real jungle. And with the new plants, the land itself has turned into its own interactive environment.

“Now it has a large tree canopy made up of coral trees, ficus trees, some of the large palm trees and bamboo overhead,” said Karen Hedges, director of the Disneyland Resort’s Horticulture and Landscaping.

Hedges said the canopy is as high as 100 feet in some areas and the foliage is growing more like the plants do in real jungles.

“The plants actually keep the heat in from the day time and carries it through to night time,” Hedges said.

When the temperatures in Anaheim dip to freezing, that saves the plants from dying.

“It will stay a couple degrees warmer in here,” she said.

While the landscaping crews work in the jungle every day, they try to leave it alone except for pruning the higher trees, and making sure the plants do not interfere with the animatronic animals that guests see.

Prince of Persia Soundtrack Featuring Alanis Morissette Available May 25

Walt Disney Records will release the original soundtrack for Walt Disney Pictures’ and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME on May 25, 2010.  The recording features an epic, romantic sweeping original score written by award-winning composer Harry Gregson-Williams and an end credit song performed by multiple Grammy® Award-winner Alanis Morissette (“I Remain”).  PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME hits theaters Memorial Day Weekend, 2010.

Canadian-born singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette wrote and performed the soundtrack’s end credit song “I Remain,” which serves as the film’s end title track.  Said Morissette of the song: “It’s an honor to write from the voice of an empowered princess about a love that empowers them both to new heights, healing and consciousness. The song wrote itself and this story was the ultimate muse.”   “I Remain” was co-written with Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem, Maroon 5, Mary J. Blige, Nelly Furtado), who also produced the track.  Elizondo also produced the Alanis Morissette-penned track “Wunderkind,” from “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” film and soundtrack. Morissette has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide, earned 12 Canadian Juno Awards, 8 Grammy® Awards and also received an additional 14 Grammy® nominations.

Harry Gregson-Williams is one of Hollywood’s most sought after composers, working on a variety of high-profile projects, both animated and live-action.  Gregson-Williams composed the music for “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” and “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” for which he collected Golden Globe and Grammy nominations for his score. He also received a BAFTA Award nomination and won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Score, as well as an Annie Award, for the blockbuster animated feature “Shrek.”  Spanning a 14 year relationship, Gregson-Williams has composed for various Jerry Bruckheimer projects including, “The Rock,”  “Armageddon,” “Enemy of the State,”  “Veronica Guerin” and “Déjà Vu.”  His numerous feature film credits have included “Shrek 2,” “Shrek the Third,” the upcoming “Shrek Forever After,” “Gone Baby Gone,” “Man on Fire,”  “Domino,” “Spy Game,” “Kingdom of Heaven,” “X-Men Origins:  Wolverine,” and “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3,”  among others.

For his score, which was recorded at the historic Abbey Road in London, Gregson-Williams utilized a broad sonic spectrum including a 77-piece orchestra, a choir of 32 vocalists as well as a variety of ethnic instruments.   “Having the opportunity to create a score for a large scale adventure like PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME is an amazing opportunity,” stated Gregson-Williams. “The film presented a musical canvas of epic proportions, lending itself to a wide range of symphonic possibilities including romantic melodies and heroic themes beautifully brought to life by our orchestra and chorus.”

Busy times ahead for Walt Disney World this Easter season

Busy times ahead for Walt Disney World this Easter season

This morning showed guests visiting Walt Disney World how busy it is going to be at the theme parks this Easter season. As early as 11: 30 a.m. today the Magic Kingdom Park has closed its gates to some guests due to capacity. It was not until just before 2 p.m. when the gates were reopened to all guests wishing to enter.

The capacity closure of Magic Kingdom this morning is just the beginning of multiple closings like this at Walt Disney World. The Magic Kingdom and Epcot are generally the first to close during busy times of the year. So if you are planning on visiting one of these two parks, go early and plan to spend the day, because if you leave and they close the gates you will not be permitted back in until the gates are reopened.

Southwest Airlines and Disneyworld Resort Check In

According to Mouseplanet:

It looks like Southwest Airlines is finally being accepted into the fold of the Resort Check-In component of Disney’s Magical Express. Beginning next month, Disney World Resort guests flying with SWA will be able to check their luggage at their resort.

This program has been in test mode at Pop Century for some time now. It appears to coming online for all but Old Key West and Caribbean Beach Resort. These two are in the midst of expanding luggage facilities and will, hopefully, come aboard soon.

Which is great news for us since we like to fly SW Airlines out of Raleigh!

Making the Perfect Disney Easter Basket

Making the Perfect Disney Easter Basket

Just in time for the holidays..Wow can’t believe Easter is just a few days away. AJ from the Disney Food Blog shares with us her way of making an Easter basket with items you get from DisneyWorld. She picks out some of the most interesting but appealing food items from around the Parks and puts them together for a wonderful Disney Themed Basket.

One thing I did notice she was missing was this.

Here is just a sample of some of the goodies she included:

Daim Candy Bars
For those of you who are Ikea devotees, you probably know Daim pretty well. These Swedish toffee bars (kind of like a Heath bar) are full of buttery, chocolaty goodness, and provide the perfect sugary treat after a ride on Maelstrom in Epcot’s Norway pavilion.

Pocky
One of my favorite items to purchase in Japan’s Mitsukoshi store is a box of PockyMaking the Perfect Disney Easter Basket. The long, thin cookies are dipped in chocolate, and packaged in bunches for maximum deliciousness. I always try to eat one at a time, but by the time I’m in the middle of the box, that goal goes out the window.
