Disney Cruise Line: PaintFest at Sea

Cast and crew members working at Disney Cruise Line are always looking for ways to give back, not only by volunteering their own time for community service projects, but through inspiring others to do the same. Disney VoluntEARS, along with the Foundation for Hospital Art, did just that during the Disney Magic’s venture across the Atlantic Ocean last week, as our second season of Mediterranean cruises began. Some 300 guests sailing aboard the ship had a unique opportunity to participate along-side crew members at the first-ever “PaintFest At Sea.” Collectively guests and crew members gave nearly 700 hours of their time to hand paint a pre-drawn Disney character mural for donating to the children’s area of the Vall d’Hebron hospital in Barcelona.

Designed by Don “Ducky” Williams, the mural itself was quite impressive, comprised of 60 pre-drawn and color-coded individual canvases that together measured 12 feet high and 20 feet long. Once the ship arrived in Barcelona Disney characters and VoluntEARS visited the hospital to deliver the mural, leaving the amazing art work to be shared by many children and parents who come to Vall d’Hebron.

Check out this video of the “PaintFest At Sea” and the delivery of the mural to the hospital.

Good Eats - La Cava del Tequila, Walt Disney World

The heritage and tradition of tequila-making in Mexico unfolds for guests at La Cava del Tequila in Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort.

Tucked away in the Mexico pavilion, La Cava del Tequila beckons guests with more than 70 types of authentic tequila, ranging from the simplest to the rarest of them all, aged to perfection and made from the finest distilled spirits from the agave plant. Tequilas range in price from $8 to $50 for a specialty tequila.

Amid warm décor, art work and original artifacts all celebrating the Mexican heritage, a “Tequila Ambassador” is on hand to educate Walt Disney World guests on the history of tequila-making.

Also on the drink menu: Exotic and uniquely blended margaritas, introducing a variety of flavored salts, spices and tropical fresh fruits masterfully prepared by experienced mixologists.  A variety of quick tastes, tapas style, will be available, including freshly made guacamole and ceviche as well as mahi mahi tostadas with diced mango and avocado and blue crab tostados with chipotle mayo and Valentina sauce.

The 30-seat La Cava del Tequila is open from noon until Epcot park closing time.  It is connected to the famous San Angel Inn as part of the Mexico pavilion, a popular stop for Walt Disney World guests.

“Iron Man 2” packs a BIG punch for Disney

"Iron Man 2" packs a BIG punch for Disney

“Iron Man 2,” the first big Marvel superhero film to open since Walt Disney Co’s $4 billion purchase of the studio, should pack a $200 million to $300 million profit punch for Disney, analysts said.

While Viacom Inc’s Paramount Pictures distributes “Iron Man 2,” giving it a fee of 8 to 10 percent of box office revenue under a deal made before last year’s acquisition, Disney unit Marvel Studios gets a share of the profits and benefits from some merchandising and product tie-ins.

Financial analysts, many of whom believe Disney paid a full price for Marvel, are tracking the movie’s success closely to see how the acquisition of Marvel comic characters might benefit the company in the long term and unlock value for its other businesses, such as its theme parks.

“The biggest benefits will come when existing agreements for consumer licensing and distribution expire, but I think Disney will make close to $300 million on this over the life of the film,” said David Bank, analyst with RBC Capital.

Tony Wible, analyst with Janney Capital Markets sees Disney earning about $200 million in profits from the box office and merchandising, net of licensing fees, and from other sources like movie plug-in product placements by companies like Oracle and Burger King.

“The logic behind this acquisition is to build the brand upon a global scale. We expect this film to be highly profitable given that Marvel generally runs a very lean budget,” he said.

Box office watchers expect “Iron Man 2,” which opens in the United States and Canada on Friday, to rake-in over $600 million around the world by the end of its run, which could prove conservative, given last summer’s big hit, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” earned $836 million worldwide.

The first “Iron Man,” which stars Robert Downey, Jr. as a weapons maker who manufactures a high-powered and lethal suit of armor, made $585 million worldwide in 2008.

Last weekend, “Iron Man 2” got off to a flying start with an international debut of $100 million. Paul Dergarabedian of tracking firm Hollywood.com Box Office expects it to make more than $120 million on its U.S. and Canadian debut weekend.

Some analysts forecast Disney making as much as a $40 million in profit by as early as the third quarter, but given the company’s size and annual revenues of over $36 billion, they see only a limited impact on overall corporate earnings.

Even “if the movie bombs, it could have a modest impact and we’d ask if there was a write-off,” said Bank.

While various analysts believe Disney, which reports second quarter earnings on Tuesday, paid a full price for Marvel, most expect the deal to pay off longer term after the Paramount and other agreements Marvel inked for merchandising and theme parks expire. Marvel, for one, has a toy licensing deal with Hasbro Inc.

“Disney paid a full price on Marvel. But if they can create one more character half the size of an ‘Iron Man’ the deal makes sense,” said Alan Gould, analyst with Soleil Research.

Disney’s Magical Express Welcomes Its 10,000,000th Guest

Almost five years to the day after launching at Orlando International Airport, Disney’s Magic Express welcomed it’s 10,000,000th guest today.

The 10,000,000th guest, Lori Ogurkis and her family from Hazelton, PA, received a special reception at the airport, complete with a surprise visit and a gift basket from Mickey Mouse. The Ogurkis family then rode in their own private motor coach to Disney’s Polynesian Resort to begin their magical vacation.

Disney’s Magical Express provides complimentary motor coach transportation and luggage transfer services from Orlando International Airport to and from select Walt Disney World Resort hotels for passengers of all Orlando air carriers.

“We are delighted to welcome the Ogurkis family to Walt Disney World Resort. Disney’s Magical Express Service, introduced in 2005, has been extremely popular with our guests and has become an important part of the overall guest experience,” said Jo-Ann Arndt, who oversees Disney’s Magical Express in her role as Vice President of Shoreside Travel Operations for Disney Cruise Line. “Our Guests love the convenience of our service and Disney’s Magical Express helps maintain both Orlando International Airport’s and Central Florida’s image as a quality and affordable destination.”

“Orlando International Airport is pleased to support innovative and seamless means of transportation for the traveling public. Resort transportation as provided by Disney’s Magical Express is a unique option that helps enhance the overall travel experience for millions of visitors to Central Florida,” said Steve Gardner, Executive Director of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.

Each year Disney’s Magical Express now carries more than 2.2 million guests and their luggage, reducing highway and terminal traffic and shortening wait times at Orlando International Airport.

Ask a Disney Question: When is the best time to visit Disney World?

Ask a Disney Question: When is the best time to visit Disney World?

This question comes from Nelson, who asks “When is the best time to visit Disney World?”

Nelson, thanks for your question and for reading the site.  This is probably the question that got me the most interested in planning my own Disney vacations.  I think the time of year you go can greatly affect your experience, so I always tell people, put a lot of thought into it.  It’s not just about crowds.  It’s about saving money, the weather, and most importantly, when you can get the vacation time.  It’s probably the first thing you decide when you go to Disney.

Since you didn’t ask specifically just about crowds, here’s a couple of preliminary questions to ask yourself:

  1.  How important is saving money?  Disney has five “seasons” that range from adventure to premiere.  Go during the least expensive time of year and you’ll also probably encounter lower crowds.
  2. When is it most convenient for you to take a vacation?  Do you need to go when your kids are out of school?  Do you have a job that is particularly busy during certain times of the year?  If you are going near the holidays, how will that effect your holiday plans when you come back home?  A trip to Disney can take a lot of preparation in the days leading up to your visit.  If you’re going during early December, for example, you may want to get all of your holiday shopping and decorating out of the way prior to your visit.
  3. How do you feel about hot weather?  There are about six or seven months ouf of the year when it’s a good bet the weather in Orlando will be hot.  If you don’t like the heat, consider going in the winter months.
  4. Finally, how important is it for you to avoid large crowds?

As far as crowds are concerned, the best months to visit Disney World and avoid crowds are usually January, September, and early December.  In recent years, incentives and special events have meant increased crowds in December, so don’t expect to walk on every ride, but it’s still a great time to go.  September is probably the slowest time of the year.  This is what we’re hearing from the crowd gurus over at the Unofficial Guide; if you want to know a specific crowd level for any day of the year, visit their crowd calendar here.  January is also famously  uncrowded.  If you’re looking for another slow time of the year, try early May.  I’ve gone there during this time for several years in a row and  I’ve walked on most rides.

So what are the downsides of  visiting Disney World during the slower months?  Well, bad weather (potentially), reduced park hours, and some attractions will be closed for refurbishment or rehab.  To me, these are all gambles I’m willing to take so that I can tour the parks at a relaxed pace.  Given a choice, I probably like January weather better (although keep in mind, it snowed last year during marathon weekend), but if you can handle the heat, you’ll probably get better discounts from Disney (free dining, room discounts, etc.) and experience lower crowds in September.

Ultimately, it’s what works for you and your travel companions.  For me, crowds are my first consideration, but my preferences don’t always match my life or my wallet.  In those cases, I’ll happily go when it’s more crowded, I’ll just make use of a touring plan to help me avoid long waits and still see what I want.

Good luck making your decision!

Talking Mickey Now Being Tested at Disneyland.

If you’ve got little kids, they’ve probably asked why Mickey doesn’t talk.  Okay, I’m not a little kid, but even I’ve found myself wishing that Mickey and the gang would say something.  Well, if you’re visiting Disneyland right now, you might just meet a talking Mickey, because the park is currently testing just that very thing.

Details are still very sketchy and we’re not sure how long this testing will last, but we’ve seen video showing Mickey greeting fans in Toontown, waving his hands, blinking his eyes and, incredibly, talking to guests and using their names.

We can’t wait to hear more about this.
