The Top 10 Best Restaurants at Disneyland

About.com writer Arthur Levine shares with us his Top 10 Best Restaurants at Disneyland:

When he launched Disneyland in 1955, Walt Disney forever changed the experience of going to an amusement park. Through the years, Disneyland has morphed into a destination resort with two parks, hotels, a shopping district–and loads of places to dine. Many Disneyland visitors, however, stick with the same nondescript fast food typically found at traditional amusement parks. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But they are missing out on some wonderful restaurants at the California resort and a chance to make their visits and vacations more memorable.

There are many great places to eat, so it’s difficult to determine the top 10 best restaurants at Disneyland. That’s why I turned to some of the most popular and respected travel journalists covering the California theme park resort for some help. I asked them to pick ten of their favorite Disney table-service restaurants. I then threw their choices into a Cuisinart, poured them through a colander, ranked the results, and developed the top-10 list.

Disney Channel's “16 Wishes” Featuring Debbie Ryan Now at Boarders

MarVista Entertainment, a leading producer and distributor of family entertainment programming, is pleased to work with Borders® to launch an exclusive line of consumer products supporting the world premiere of “16 Wishes.” The movie stars Debby Ryan (“The Suite Life on Deck”) and Jean-Luc Bilodeau (“Kyle XY”) and premieres FRIDAY, JUNE 25 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel. The announcement was made today by Michael D. Jacobs, President, MarVista Entertainment.

“16 Wishes” follows Abby Jensen (played by Ryan), a teenager who can’t wait to grow up, and when she is handed the chance to make all her wishes come true, quickly learns the importance of being careful what you wish for.

Borders will be the exclusive retailer for all “16 Wishes” merchandise, available in store beginning June 25th. A variety of products will be available nationally in all Borders and Waldenbooks retail locations and online at Borders.com. Borders will dedicate feature space via promotional end caps and/or table programs to merchandise the 13 item collection. Additionally 200 stores will feature video monitors running the movie trailer and music video through the end of July.

MarVista and its agent, Art & Science, have signed agreements with several leading manufacturers for the launch merchandise. Products include the “16 Wishes” soundtrack, featuring Debby Ryan singing “A Wish Comes True Everyday,” and together with brother Chase Ryan, the single “Open Eyes,” which they co-wrote. The soundtrack will also be available on iTunes.com and is distributed under the MarVista Entertainment label by Brody Distribution Group (BDG). BDG is distributed by RED Distribution, LLC (a division of Sony Music Entertainment). Other products include T-Shirts from Now & Zen Productions; calendars from Harry N. Abrams; necklaces and keychains from Gloria Duchin; magnetic and regular bookmarks, journals and a 110-page junior novelization from Ink Media; a light-up journal from Spark Studios; posters from Aquarius, and bracelets from Jac Vanek, with a percentage of proceeds going to RockCANRoll, a hunger relief organization organizing food donations through concerts, school events and corporations.

The “16 Wishes” initiative at Borders will kick off with an in-store appearance featuring Debby Ryan and Jean-Luc Bilodeau on June 19th at the Borders location in Century City, Los Angeles, to support the launch and sign memorabilia. Select “16 Wishes” items will be available in store for the event.

MarVista has also signed a strategic in-store and on-line promotional partnership with Rita’s Italian Ice, the largest Italian ice concept in the nation, operating over 550 stores in 18 states, to promote the movie. Beginning on June 15th, “16 Wishes” movie flyers will be posted in all stores; and the Company will support the launch with an email campaign to its “Birthday Club” members, together with a Facebook and Twitter campaign.

“We are excited to have cemented our retail partnership with Borders, working together with gifted marketer Jodi Jackson to introduce the magic of ‘16 Wishes’ to teens and tweens across the country,” commented Jacobs. “This relationship, together with our extensive promotional partnership with Rita’s Italian Ice and combined marketing efforts, furthers our goals to ensure an enthusiastic following for “16 Wishes” and the talented cast, including Debby Ryan and Jean-Luc Bilodeau.”

”We’re pleased to be the exclusive retailer for the ’16 Wishes’ merchandise,” said Gary Bale, senior VP of Non-Book for Borders. “Teens and tweens look to Borders to provide a variety of entertainment products, whether books, music, movies and other merchandise that speaks to their interests. The ‘16 Wishes’ merchandise, which only we offer, fits within our mission to be a place for entertainment and inspiration.”

A Few of My Favorite (Disney Planning) Things.

A Few of My Favorite (Disney Planning) Things.

I’m often asked for tips on how to plan a Disney vacation, but when I give advice to people who aren’t hardcore Disney fans, I can see that it’s overwhelming.  And it is.  I mean, a Disney vacation is pretty involved. Sure, you can go and just wing it and probably have a good time, but to have a great time, and to get the most out of your money, you have to do some planning and research. This made me think about my favorite Disney planning tools, the kind I like to recommend to people.  Here are the ones that top my list.

1. Disboards and Passporter.  Ask a question on these sites and it will get answered by knowledgeable Disney fans. Disboards and Passporter differ in size, mainly. Disboards is huge and it’s easy to feel a bit intimidated by the wealth of information out there.  Passporter is smaller and more intimate.   I post on both sites and like them equally as much and have found that my questions are answered pretty quickly on both sites.   Most of the posters are very friendly, so even those who are shy about posting online shouldn’t feel intimidated.

One thing I like about Disney message boards is that no mattter how good your travel guide is, some of it will become outdated pretty fast.  The posters on these sites are very passionate about Disney and keep up with changes, some of which they’ll hear about before they’re even officially announced by Disney, so if you’re unsure about something, look there first.

2.  Disney Food Blog.  One of the few sites, besides this one, that I check almost every day. If there’s something new in Disney food, AJ is going to have it.  Great reviews, pictures and foodie news.

3. Kevin Klose’s dining reviews on WDW Info (part of Disboards). I really enjoy Kevin’s reviews. He’s honest, loves food, and has a good sense of humor.  Sometimes when I read food reviews on Disney message boards, I don’t feel like I’m getting the total picture.  I trust Kevin to tell it like it is.  You can also hear Kevin’s reviews on the DisUnplugged, one of my favorite podcasts.

4.  The Unofficial Guide. Yes, it’s huge, but it’s also the best Disney guidebook out there, particularly for first-timers.  You don’t have to read the entire thing and commit it to memory. Although it does help.

Looking for something smaller?  Try The Complete  Guide to Walt Disney World.  I love the Unofficial Guide, but if you’re looking for a guidebook to supplement your UG or if you find the UG to be just too much information, check out this book.  The writers live near Disney  World and have been there hundreds of times and most importantly, they are clearly passionate about Disney. The photos are great.  I especially like the descriptions of the rides, which are the best ones out there.  They even tell you a bit of ride history and trivia. A lot of work goes into this guidebook and it shows.  This is the guidebook my kids (even the two who can’t read yet) fight over.

5. Mousesavers.  Information to help you save every penny, including historical data on Disney discounts.  Very up to the minute.

6. All Ears. Probably one of the best sites for resort descriptions. Lots of great pictures of things you wouldn’t even think to ask about, like bathroom sinks and doorknobs. Hey, someone needs to know that.

7.  Touring Plans.  It’s hard to convey to someone who’s “just taking a trip to Disney” how important it is to have a plan in the parks.   Most people don’t even consider the need to put that much effort into a vacation, right?  But a little bit of work can go a long way.  If you’re going when it’s hot and crowded, don’t even consider going without some sort of touring plan.  You don’t have to follow it exactly.  It’s pretty rare that I do.  But it will give you a general idea of how things work and how to maximize your time in the parks.

8.  YouTube.   One of the best places to see Disney park videos. Want to know what you’ll see when you ride the ferry from the Ticket and Transportation Center to the Magic Kingdom?  Or what the inside of Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin looks like?  Resorts, rides, and oddities.  It’s all there.  Good way to prepare hesitant kids as well.  Or scare the heck out of them even more.

9.  PSCalculator.    This is one useful tool. Put in your arrival date and it will tell you when you can make your dining reservations.

10.  The Weather Channel online.  Orlando weather can be dramatically different from one day to the next. Yes, there are about six months out of the year where it’s going to be hot. Hot and humid and little else.  But the rest of the year can fluctuate quite a bit. In fact, from January though March this year, the weather was freezing cold on many days, even snowing on marathon day in January.  When I was there in December, it was in the 40s and 50s for the first few days and then record high temperatures after that. So keep up with the weather and pack accordingly.  And even if it says it’s going to be hot, bring a sweater.  Your mom was right.

The 44th Annual CMA Awards to be Broadcast Live on Nov 10th on ABC

The Country Music Association and ABC Television Network have announced that “The 44th Annual CMA Awards” will air WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 10 (8:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on ABC live from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

“The CMA Awards is ‘Country Music’s Biggest Night’ and is one of the most highly anticipated events for our industry each year,” said Steve Moore, Chairman of the CMA Board of Directors. “It’s a night to recognize and honor our finest performers, songwriters, record producers, musicians and music video directors.”

The 2009 CMA Awards came in No. 3 for its telecast week in the Adults 18-49 demo and No. 5 for the week in Total Viewers, according to Nielsen. Held during November Sweeps (Nov. 11), “The 43rd Annual CMA Awards” on ABC dominated the night, ranking No. 1 in all six half-hours of the night in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 (5.3/14). In fact it was a clean sweep on the night, as the net also took top honors of the evening across all key Adult, Men and Women demographics (18-24, 18-49, 25-54), as well as registering as the top-rated broadcaster with Teens (12-17) and Kids (2-11). The program beat second-place CBS by 5.7 million viewers, with 17.3 million people tuned in. The CMA Awards gave ABC its biggest Wednesday audience with non-sport programming in well over four years and its highest Adult 18-49 numbers in two years. An estimated 36 million viewers watched all or some portion of the live, three-hour broadcast.

The CMA Awards nominees and winners are determined by the 6,000 industry professional members of CMA, which was the first trade organization formed to promote an individual genre of music in 1958. Winners of “The 44th Annual CMA Awards” will be determined in a final round of voting by eligible voting members of the Country Music Association. CMA Awards balloting is officiated by the international accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche LLP.

“The CMA Awards recognizes the best of our format. Our artists and music resonate with people from all walks of life, and that’s what makes this ‘Country Music’s Biggest Night,'” said Moore.

The eligibility period for the 2010 CMA Awards is July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010. All voting for “The 44th Annual CMA Awards” will be conducted online. The first ballot and instructions will be emailed June 29 to CMA members in good standing who are eligible to vote. Voting for the first ballot closes at 5:00 PM/CT, July 15.

The second ballot will be emailed to CMA members Aug. 10. Voting for the second ballot closes at 5:00 PM/CT, Aug. 23. The final nominees in each of the 12 categories will be announced in early September.

The third and final ballot will be emailed to CMA members Oct. 15. Voting for the CMA Awards final ballot ends at 5:00 PM/CT, Nov. 2.

“The 44th Annual CMA Awards” is a production of the Country Music Association. Robert Deaton is the executive producer. Paul Miller is the director. The special will be shot in high definition and broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC’s selected HDTV format, with 5.1 channel surround sound.

Ask a Disney Question: Epcot Wine Walk.

Ask a Disney Question: Epcot Wine Walk.

This question comes from Teresa, who asks:  “I cant seem to find any information on Epcot Wine Walk on your site.  Is there such a thing? A coworker told me briefly about it.  What is it?

Teresa, the Epcot Wine Walk is a card or “passport” you purchase for $20 that allows you to taste two two-ounce servings from each of the three World Showcase countries that participate, Italy, France and Germany.  The passport your receive is a two-sided description of the wines; it includes a map of where to find them.

The wine walk is a year-round offering. Selections occasionally change. If you’d like to read more about the wine walk, check out this thread on Mouseowners. You can also read AJ’s post about it here in the Disney Food Blog.

Thanks for reading Chip and Co and for your question. Hope this helps.

New Disney Dream Construction Video

New Disney Dream Construction Video

On Tuesday, the final block of the Disney Dream was put into place at the Meyer Werft shipyard, marking a major milestone in construction, and rounding out the 80 total blocks that make up the ship. It is impressive to witness the ship taking shape, but did you ever wonder how it happens?

In the most simplistic terms, the process of building the Disney Dream is similar to playing with building blocks. Pre-fabricated complete hull sections are joined in block units and are then brought together to form the ship.

Sounds simple, right? Well, check out this video and hear from some of the experts at Disney Cruise Line and Meyer Werft on how the Disney Dream is really coming together.

With the steel construction process complete, efforts now shift to connecting maintenance systems and further building out the interior of the ship. Each day the Disney Dream gets closer and closer to its Maiden Voyage and a reality that I can’t wait to experience!

Behind The Scenes: Float Driving in the Main Street Electrical Parade

This article comes to us from the Disney Parks Blog:

It’ll be like seeing an old friend when the Main Street Electrical Parade returns to Walt Disney World on Sunday. I grew up watching the illuminated floats and yes, even dreamed of being part of action and piloting one of those whirling turtles or bugs. Today, we’re showing how it’s done – how our float drivers bring characters to life:

The parade and other special events at Magic Kingdom Park, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot begin June 6 and run through August 14. So, what are you looking forward to seeing during Summer Nightastic! at the Walt Disney World Resort?

Disney Vacation Checklist: Tips for Saving Money and Time at Disney World

Are you getting ready to leave for your Disney vacation? If you are like most people, you have spent months planning your trip, trying to learn as much as you could about the parks and resorts. You may also be trying to save money too, as Disney can end up being very expensive if you are not careful in your planning. With this in mind, in the few days before you get ready to go, there are several things that you can and should do in order to make sure that you have a smooth, and affordable, Disney vacation.

Here are five important ones:

  1. Check the weather forecast before you leave and make sure you pack for the weather. Believe it or not, Florida can get cold in the winter, rain is always a possibility, and tropical storms/hurricanes don’t necessarily avoid Disney World. Not packing appropriately may mean you will be buying those ponchos, scarves, hats and gloves at the parks, which will definitely put a dent in your wallet.
  2. Go to the Disney World website and check the park hours. If you are staying on Disney property, you may want to take advantage of the Extra Magic Hours.  Make sure you know when they are to make the most of your time while at Disney World.
  3. You will also want to check which rides/attractions will be closed during your visit. Everyone in your family, especially kids, should be prepared ahead of time if a favorite attraction won’t be open. Plus, you won’t want to waste time walking over to rides that are closed!
  4. Do you have a packing list? This is a great way to make sure that your costs stay as low as possible, because it will help insure that you don’t forget anything! You can be sure that you can buy whatever you forget at Disney….for a lot more money than you would have paid at home.
  5. Lastly, if you have young children and a stroller is part of your park plans, consider bringing one from home. Or if you don’t want to do that, consider renting one from a stroller company in the Disney area. Both options will cost you a lot less than getting one at the parks.

After months of planning, you will want to make sure that your Disney vacation is the best it can be. Taking a little time as you get ready to leave, to do these things, can help you save money on your trip and make the most of your vacation time as well.
