Disney/Marvel inks deal with Turk Telekom

Walt Disney-owned Marvel on Monday unveiled a licensing deal with Turkish telecom giant Turk Telekom that will lead to such offers as animated shorts, an animated TV series for mobile phones and the Internet, casual games online and for the PC, mobile applications, merchandise and a customized kids Web site.

Financial details weren’t disclosed.

Under the deal, Marvel’s superheroes will be customized and translated into Turkish. The agreement will also match Marvel characters with Turk Telekom’s mascot Can and will be “highlighting Turkey and its culture in an extraordinary manner,” the companies said.

The partners plan Marvel mini-stores at Turk Telekom’s stores and Web sites.

Sobee, Turk Telekom’s gaming arm, will translate a Marvel kids Web site into Turkish and will develop animated shorts and games. It will also introduce Marvel characters into some of its games, such as “I Can Football” and “Super Can Oyun.”

“These agreements are an important component of our strategy to significantly expand our presence worldwide and further maximize the potential of the Marvel brand on a global level,” said Simon Philips, president, worldwide consumer products for Marvel.

Turk Telekom is active in Turkey, the Middle East, the Balkans and Central Asia.

Beverly Hills-based Paimotion Entertainment, which matches up Hollywood with emerging markets, is also involved in the licensing deal.

MySpace Music premieres first single for the Almost Alice soundtrack

MySpace Music is excited to announce the exclusive unveiling of the first single from the highly anticipated Almost Alice soundtrack. Presently, users can stream the song “Follow Me Down” from 3OH!3 via the social networking site’s music channel. In the coming weeks, MySpace Music will continue to premiere songs from the soundtrack as well as hosting the full album stream leading up to the film’s release. The upcoming MySpace Music premieres are as follows: Avril Lavigne – “Alice” (Feb. 4), All Time Low – “Painting Flowers” (Feb. 19), Almost Alice complete album stream (Feb. 28). To listen to “Follow Me Down” from 3OH!3 visit: http://www.myspace.com/music.

Almost Alice boasts an eclectic array of recording artists with original songs based on some of the most charismatic characters in literary history, such as “In Transit” performed by Mark Hoppus and Pete Wentz. Other artists include The All-American Rejects, Shinedown, 3OH!3,  Franz Ferdinand and All Time Low.  “Very Good Advice” performed by Robert Smith, is the only song from Disney’s 1951 animated film “Alice in Wonderland” that appears on the collection.

From Walt Disney Pictures and visionary director Tim Burton comes an epic 3D fantasy adventure Alice in Wonderland, a magical and imaginative twist on some of the most beloved stories of all time. Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror.  The all-star cast also includes Anne Hatthaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Crispin Glover. The screenplay is by Linda Woolverton

A very familiar face returns to 'Mary Poppins'

No matter how much you like the stage version of  “Mary Poppins,” the original 1964 Disney movie is never far from mind. Which is why the Ahmanson Theatre audience went crazy Friday night when it was told Richard M. Sherman, one of the film’s songwriters, was in the house and went even crazier when it learned Dick Van Dyke, one of the film’s stars, would make a surprise appearance during the show.

The effervescent actor did not portray Bert, the Cockney chimney sweep he made famous. Instead he reprised his other (and less well known) screen role–Mr. Dawes Sr., the crotchety bank president and boss of Poppins’ boss, Mr. Banks. Van Dyke had to cajole Walt Disney into giving him the part because Disney thought Van Dyke–then in his 30s– was too young to be the ancient moneyman. The actor reportedly won him over by acing a screen test, agreeing to portray Dawes for free and making a donation to the California Institute of the Arts, which Disney co-founded.

Xbox Takes On Cable, Streaming TV Shows and Movies

Executives at Microsoft are fond of saying that its subscription gaming service, Xbox Live, should be thought of as a cable channel.

They want Xbox to be seen not merely as a gaming machine for teenagers, but as a media portal for parents and grandparents, too. The company is even producing shows for users: it is in the middle of the second season of “1 vs. 100,” an interactive version of a game show that was on NBC.

The content ambitions do not end there. Microsoft has held in-depth talks with the Walt Disney Company about a programming deal with ESPN, according to people close to the talks, who requested anonymity because the talks were intended to be private.

First image from Pixar's Cars 2 revealed?

The movie Cars 2 is slated for release in Summer 2011, and that means that Hollywood CGI types are busy sketching, rendering and compositing. Production artwork (seen above) found in Disney’s annual report, has Lightning McQueen running in Japan ahead of what we’d imagine is a Formula 1 car. The plot has McQueen dashing around the world with Mater to win the Race of Champions. Mater gets confused for a top spy, and we can only hope that will be much funnier in Pixar’s hands than Larry the Cable Guy’s last outing as a government operative.

Tron Legacy Will Use 3-D The Way The Wizard Of Oz Used Color

Article is from one of my favorite websites io9:

Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski has just set our minds at ease. He promises that the new Disney Tron will be less like Avatar and more like the Wizard of Oz, in that only the Tron world will be 3D.

Kosinski explained the substance-over-3-D-sparkle mantra on Tron Legacy to MTV, stating:

“Our approach is not like “Avatar,” which I think is 3D from the first shot to the last. Ours is sort of a Wizard Of Oz. approach. Ninety-eight percent of the 3D is in the world of “Tron.” The 3D really starts once we get into the Tron world.”

He goes on explaining that the focus has been on the story, not the effects. And that famous Comic Con teaser video, showing lightcycle racing and the two Jeff Bridgeses, won’t actually appear in the movie — those events take place before the movie starts. In fact, the movie will look much more advanced than that teaser, which a small team put together on its own.

Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic is almost here

The Houston Dynamo, FC Dallas, New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC will get an early taste of MLS competition when the four clubs compete in the inaugural Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The tournament, which kicks off the re-launch of the complex and is part of the 2010 ESPN The Weekend, begins on Thursday, Feb. 25, with the Dynamo taking on the Red Bulls at 6 p.m. ET, followed by a clash between Dallas and Toronto at 8:30 p.m. ET. The winners will meet in the championship game on Saturday, Feb. 27, with the losers of the opening matches meeting in a third-place game earlier in the day.

“Bringing four Major League Soccer teams to Central Florida to play in the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic is very exciting and a big win for all of our local soccer players, fans, parents and spectators,” said Disney Sports Area Manager Patrick Dicks. “ESPN The Weekend is serving as a major platform for these teams to prepare for the upcoming season and we are proud to have them be a part of this re-branding weekend.”

Daily tickets to the Disney Pro Soccer Classic will include admission to the complex for both games and entrance to ESPN The Weekend events that are taking place at the complex. Tickets can be bought on-site at the complex box office or through ticketmaster. Naples Comes to Italy - Disneyworld's Epcot World Showcase

It is all over the net today so I thought I would post something up there. WDW News Today is reporting on this newest addition to Epcot’s restaurants:

We can confirm that the construction taking place in the very back of the Italy pavilion at Epcot is for the addition of Patina Restaurant Group’s “Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria”, a restaurant that already exists in Downtown Disney at the Disneyland Resort. While we don’t know if this particular location will be table service like its west coast counterpart, here is a look at the menu for the California version of Naples (note that the bottom of the menu says Walt Disney World):

I will be in Epcot next week to take some construction photos. So check back with us soon.
