Breaking news from the Disney Park Blog

Just announced during Disney’s annual shareholders meeting that a new premium annual pass for admission to the parks at both Disneyland Resort and the Walt Disney World Resort will be offered beginning Thursday. It’s called “Disney Premier Passport” and it’ll feature the same benefits you get with the “premium” annual passes for Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts for $700, plus applicable- sales tax.

So, what’s in it for you? At Walt Disney World:

And at Disneyland Resort:

  • Unlimited admission to both Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure Parks for a period of one year, including park hopping privileges
  • Parking at any pay-on-entry parking lot
  • Subscription to Backstage Pass.
  • Complimentary subscription to Disney’s Family Fun Magazine (one per household)

If you’re already holding a Premium Annual Pass for both Resorts, you’ll automatically be issued a “Disney Premier Passport” – with an expiration date based on the later of the two annual passes. You may also upgrade your annual or seasonal pass for one resort to a “Disney Premier Passport” for an additional fee.

The Passport will be available for sale at the Disneyland Resort box office and Walt Disney World Guest Relations windows beginning tomorrow. So, sound interesting? Let us know what you think.

Marvel still looking for the right Captain America

Marvel still looking for the right Captain America

So the July 2011 deadline is approaching fast and it seems Marvel still hasn’t picked out the actor to play Captain America in The First Avenger: Captain America film.

The latest news is that Chris Evans, who already logged Marvel Comics superhero time as Johnny Storm/Human Torch in two Fantastic Four films will be trying out for the Captain. Add him with the long list of other actors and you have yourself a buffet of man meat just chomping at the fork wanting to be apart of this movie.

Actually I wonder if the major hold up is the low salary the actors being told they would make for the film. Marvel informed them that the job would include options for 9 future films and a salary of only around $300,000 each. Seems very low to me.

With this BIG casting speed bump I cant image a year will be a long enough time to make a movie of this caliber. I hope I am wrong and whoever they decide will be great. I just hope to not be staring down the cane of another Daredevil movie.

Finding the best seats for Playhouse Disney – Live on Stage at Walt Disney World

Finding the best seats for Playhouse Disney - Live on Stage at Walt Disney World

Loved by preschoolers, enjoyed by parents, and on my TV every morning the shows from Playhouse Disney are entertaining and also educational. Teaching little ones teamwork, problem solving, and so much more.

One of my daughters favorite shows while at Walt Disney World is Playhouse Disney – Live on Stage. It is a scheduled 22-minute live show performed in Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park, providing preschoolers the chance to sing, dance and play along with popular Characters from Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney shows.

Last time we were at Disney World we saw this show at least 5 times. I honestly lost track between that and the Little Mermaid. The show starts out with you seated on the floor and then the theme song for Mickey Mouse Club House starts playing. Your are introduced to a cast member who takes you on your journey. The main story Mickey and the gang has to get ready for Minnie’s birthday but they don’t know how. They team up with some of their friends from the other Playhouse Disney shows to learn about how to prepare for her party. I am trying not to give away to much for those who haven’t seen it.

The three shows that are represented on stage along with Mickey Mouse Club House include:

Handy Manny

Little Einsteins

My Friends Tigger and Pooh

The story book opens and you are magically transported into each TV Show. The look on the children faces is priceless. Each time we went we sat in a different location. One time we sat in the very front trying to get close to the stage. I would not recommend sitting here unless you have to. You are very limited on what you can see cause the stage is so tall. Also another bad spot is on the side of the stage, we missed out on a lot of the characters due to being seated there.

The back drops for the stage are great. I especially loved Rocket from Little Einsteins. Rocket has working lights and everything. Very cool.

We found the best seats in the house were at the very back. You can see the whole stage with no issues and since most people are pushing towards the stage your not so packed in. Also when the bubbles & various other things fall from the ceiling sitting in the back we got plenty of mementos to take with us.

I think my daughters favorite character was Tigger. When he asks all the kids in the audience to bounce was hysterical!

After you make your way through the three stories and learn how to prepare for Minnie’s Birthday you are taken back to Mickey Mouse Club House to put those ideas to work. Wait till you see what happens when Minnie shows up.

Overall the experience was great..It is a good family show that really gets you and your little ones involved. Remember sit in the middle towards the very back if you want the best seats. Be sure to have fun and sing along with all the songs. Oh and one more thing have fun your at Disneyworld!!!

1 Million Volunteers Register for Free Disney tickets

1 Million Volunteers Register for Free Disney tickets

Disney reached its goal Tuesday of getting 1 million people to sign up for a day of volunteer work in exchange for a free one-day ticket to a Disney park.

Under the “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” program, Disney is giving a free day’s admission to any park at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., or at Walt Disney World near Orlando, Fla., provided the volunteer work has been performed and certified by the HandsOn Network, a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities.

The program was announced last fall but the program rules required that the volunteer work take place this year.

Disney announced Tuesday that the program had reached its cap of 1 million people registering just 10 weeks after volunteers began signing up Jan. 1.

“By any measure, the ‘Give a Day, Get a Disney Day’ program exceeded our expectations,” Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said in a statement.
Although registration for the free tickets is now closed, those who were certified for the program by the HandsOn Network have until Dec. 15 to redeem their free park ticket. Some blackout dates apply.

And while volunteers can no longer get free tickets to the parks, anyone interested in volunteering can still look for opportunities through the HandsOn Network at http://HandsOnNetwork.org.

Projects that used volunteers in the “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” program ranged from cleanups of the Vaciatalega and La Perla beaches in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to affordable housing construction in Pittsburgh.

Disney off the Beaten Path:The Slowest Time of the Year

As much as I love Disney World, I find that there’s a direct correlation between my enjoyment of the parks and how crowded they are.  It’s true that there’s a certain energy and excitement that you can only find when the parks are crowded, but that feeling fades pretty quickly when you can’t get from Fantasyland to Tomorrowland due to the sweaty hordes thronging the walkways.  This is why I tend to travel during the off season.  If you’ve never been to Disney World during the slower months, you’re missing out on one of the best experiences you can have in the parks.

So, just when is the slowest time of the year?  Well, there are some Disney fans who say that the so-called slowest time of the year doesn’t exist anymore.  I’ll agree to a certain extent.  I can remember coming to Disney during the first two weeks of  December in the late 80s. The parks were practically empty and we walked on every ride; I can remember riding Big Thunder Mountain Rail Road at least eight times without getting off.  While those days are gone, there are still great times of the year to come to Disney.    Don’t think in terms of months, however.  Promotions and special events mean that even traditionally slower months of the year will have busy weekends. Rather, think in terms of slower weeks and if possible avoid the following:  Holidays, school breaks, and special events like Pop Warner.  Here’s a brief run-down on the slowest times of the year:

January: January is a great time to visit the world, but keep in mind that marathon weekend (usually the first or second weekend in January, depending on when New Year’s falls) and Martin Luther King weekend will be crowded. Otherwise, it’s probably the slowest time of the year.  The trade-off is that the weather can be unpredictable, so bring clothing that you can layer and don’t forget a coat.  And your bathing suit.

February:   Great until mid-month.   Valentine’s day marks the beginning of Disney’s very long Spring  Break season and higher crowds.

May:  Early May is one of my favorite times of the year.   Kids are back in school after break.  Only the most die-hard Disney fan is going to take his kids out of school right before school gets out for the summer.  Mother’s day is almost always uncrowded. I’ve been there two years in a row and the waits were better than they are in early December.   If you want to catch  Star Wars Weekend at Hollywood Studios, the first weekend of this month-long event is usually a weekend in May.  Go and be rewarded with lower crowds.   A warning:  It can be really hot.

September:  After Labor day, expect low crowds. Also expect hurricane warnings.  If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t get trip insurance when you travel, make an exception this month.  Orlando hasn’t been hit hard by a hurricane in years, but the outer bands can mean heavy rains and flight delays.  Plan accordingly.

November:  I love early November. The weather is perfect, the crowds are low, and there are often good discounts available from Disney.  Just remember that Jersey Days, the period when New Jersey schools are out for break, falls during this time,  usually the latter part of the second week.   Expect much higher crowds than normal during this time.

December:   Early December used to the slowest time of the year, much loved by Disney fans.  Sadly, this is no longer true.   Slightly busier than May or January, you can still  you can enjoy Christmas decorations and relatively low crowds during this time.   If avoiding large school groups is important to you, make sure you find out the dates for Pop Warner ahead of time.   Most of us love kids and don’t begrudge them having their fun, but when you’re trying to sleep and they’re practicing their cheers at 2:00 a.m., you might find yourself lacking in pixie dust.   By all means, don’t cancel your trip during this time, just don’t book a room at the resort(s) they’re staying at.  One more caveat:  Their arrival and departure days are usually very busy days in the park, but otherwise Pop Warner doesn’t seem to have a huge effect on crowds.

One last thing.  If you’re concerned about crowds and want more in-depth information, check out the Touring Plans Crowd Calendar by the folks who put out the Unofficial Guide.  They use years of data and expert analysis (they have an economist predicting trends based on the economy, for goodness sakes!) to determine crowd levels.  I don’t plan a trip without it.  You can view the calender 30-days out for free or you can pay around $9 for a year-long subscription that also gives you access to touring plans and Lines, which gives you mobile wait times on your phone.  You can also check out this site for free.

Chris blogs at Everything Walt Disney World.  She’d like you to know that she was not hoodwinked, bamboozled, or paid in chocolate for giving Touring Plans a glowing recommendation.

Stretch is a fun-loving under-the-sea octopus friend that shines in glittery purple. Kids can count her eight rubbery legs and dozens of sticky suckers that are sure to stand up to rough-and-tumble play and extreme stretching. Shanghai Disneyland will take 5-6 years to be built

It may take five to six years for U.S. entertainment giant Walt Disney Co. to complete its Shanghai Disneyland theme park, pushing the opening to 2015 at the earliest, Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng said at the National People’s Congress here.

The first phase of the park itself will be located on a 1.16-sq. -kilometer tract. The entire site is 3.9 sq. kilometers, with the remaining 2 .74 sq. kilometers slated for commercial facilities and parking.

The resort will be smaller than Hong Kong Disneyland, which at 1.26 sq. kilometers is currently the smallest Disneyland park.

China’s National Development and Reform Commission has already formally approved the resort, and city officials are negotiating with Disney over how it will be operated. There is some concern that once Shanghai Disneyland opens, those on the Chinese mainland will go there, reducing patronage at the Hong Kong park. However, Han said, “The two cities are brothers and will work together.”

Disney retools 'Rapunzel' but fell short with Princess & the Frog

It seems Disney was not impressed with the numbers on its last venture The Princess & the Frog. While it had no problem bringing in little girls, the biggest complaint that was heard was from little boys. They did not want to go and see a movie with “Princess” in the title. I completely understand, if I was young again (ah memories) I don’t think I would see a girlie movie either.

So with Disney’s next film instead of having it named a girlie name like “Rapunzel” they decided to go with something more gender neutral and go with “Tangled” instead.

“We did not want to be put in a box,” said Ed Catmull, president of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios, explaining the reason for the name change. “Some people might assume it’s a fairy tale for girls when it’s not. We make movies to be appreciated and loved by everybody.”

The LA Times has a great article this morning talking about this very topic:

Disney is taking no chances with “Tangled,” positioned to take advantage of holiday family moviegoing when it opens Nov. 24. The studio’s marketing campaign will amp up the role of the dashing Errol Flynn-styled male lead to share the spotlight with the golden-haired namesake of the classic Brothers Grimm story. Hints of swashbuckling action are already being leaked online.

“In our film, the infamous bandit Flynn Rider meets his match in the girl with the 70 feet of magical golden hair,” wrote the film’s producer, Roy Conli, on Disney Animation’s Facebook page. “We’re having a lot of fun pairing Flynn, who’s seen it all, with Rapunzel, who’s been locked away in a tower for 18 years.”

Flynn Rider, of course, is nowhere to be found in the original “Rapunzel” story.

In the Grimm tale, a prince riding through a forest is enticed by Rapunzel’s sweet singing and climbs up the tower where the imprisoned girl is reachable only by her golden tresses. The prince is hardly the boastful swordsman type, let alone a charming rogue. And in Disney’s latest version, the demure princess is transformed into a feisty teen.

Disney hopes the introduction of the slightly bad-boy character will help it tap the broadest possible audience for “Tangled,” emulating the success of its corporate sibling, Pixar. Pixar’s movies have been huge hits because they appeal to girls, boys and adults. Its most recent release, “Up,” grossed more than $700 million worldwide.

D23 Anniversary Party - Disney Parks News

Chris over at Everything WDW has a nice collection of news that came out of the Anniversary Party at the Walt Disney World Resort. Including what is going to be done with Mickey’s Toontown Fair, Goofy’s Barnstormer, and much more :

  • The next D23 conference will be announced on March 10th at the annual shareholders meeting.
  • Mickey and Minnie’s country houses will not be demolished.  No word on where they’ll be moved.
  • Also, no date on when Mickey’s Toontown Fair will be closed.  Given that work has commenced in other areas and that Disney tends to work in sections to avoid interrupting guests, bet on later rather than sooner.
  • Despite posted information to the contrary, no decision has been made yet on the theme for Goofy’s Barnstormer.
