Engineering the Magic at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida

Engineering the Magic at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida

With a model of a roller coaster in tow, a team of Disney engineers have some magic in store this summer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida Walt Disney World Clubhouse.

On a mission to make learning fun, mechanical engineer Lee Wilson has spent five years designing “cool experiments” that teach kids about real-life applications for science, math and technology. Wilson, with his colleagues, visits local schools and camps year-around to share knowledge and inspire students to become the innovators of tomorrow. Their lessons always include props that resemble rides and attractions from Disney Parks. Crowd pleasers include working replicas of an animatronic Tiki Bird, roller coaster and a hovercraft.

“It’s electric to see them getting excited about math and science,” says Wilson, who takes great delight in working with his team to win over young audiences.

Boys & Girls Club service director Jose Bastias believes the Walt Disney World engineers made an impression on the approximately 120 kids who participated in their presentation.

“It was an amazing sight,” said Bastias. “They all had their hands up because they had a million questions.”

For many children in the audience, it was also a glimpse at a world beyond what they know.

“A program like this opens their eyes to see different things,” said Bastias, who points out this introduction to engineering may inspire the kids to consider careers in math, science or technology.

Product Review: Disney Parks: The Secrets, Stories and Magic Behind the Scenes

Product Review: Disney Parks: The Secrets, Stories and Magic Behind the Scenes

In May I received an email from the people behind the video series Disney Parks asking me if I’d like to review their latest videos. Of course, I said yes! I’d seen parts of them on television and always taped them. My kids love them and they’re fun to watch when you’re missing Disney, as I often do. Since I wasn’t blogging at the time and because I had a lot of obligations in the last few months, I didn’t review them right away because I couldn’t give it the time it deserved, but since things have slowed down a bit, I’ve had a chance to watch all of them and I can’t recommend them enough.

I loved this series, which includes six DVDs showing secrets and highlights from the parks. My sons especially loved the one on Animal Kingdom, which they watched every single day for a two week period. I found myself humming the tune all day long (if you’ve seen the video, you know it; it’s kind of catchy). The writers had access to Disney Imagineers, executives, and cast members, so you’re really getting the story behind the attractions. The interviews alone are worth the price of the video. The video quality is excellent as is the sound.

I’d recommend this to first-timers to get a general idea of what’s available in the parks. Sure, you can read a guidebook. They’re indispensible. But having that visual to go along with it is really useful and fun. Even if you’ve been to the parks a lot, I think this series is worthwhile for the stories. It’s also nice to reminisce between trips. I know that sometimes at the end of a hard day, I like to pop one of these videos in the DVD player and just relax. Finally, my kids really liked them. I mean, that’s kind of an understatement. It was their video of choice all summer, which says a lot I think, given that they don’t get a lot of television so they have to choose carefully when they do. Although they’ve been to the parks a lot, the little ones don’t really understand the whole picture, but after watching the videos, they really seemed to get it better. At one point, my younger son pointed to something in the store and said “Animal Kingdom!” and like any good Disney-obsessed mom, I thought to myself “Good. The indoctrination is working.” Seriously, I’m counting on that one to push me around the parks in my old age.

I’ve seen these videos discussed a lot in online Disney forums and from what I can tell, you can get them the cheapest from Amazon.   Some of the videos contain footage that you may likely have seen on the Travel Channel, but some of it is new and it’s all commercial free.  I also like having it all in one place.

Disclaimer: Other than the free videos, I haven’t received anything from the company, so my opinion is completely unbiased. I could have said I didn’t like them and I would still have the videos in my hot little hands!!  If you’ve seen the videos and want to share your opinions or if you have any questions, please let me know in the comment section.

Thanks Joel for checking us out all the way from Hawaii, and thanks for the video and pictures.

Here is the video from the empty lot back before construction began.

Here are just some of the photos from Joel Flickr account.

Go here to check out the rest of his collection over the course of construction of the Aulani Resort.

If you want to send us any pictures of video of any Disney property email them to [email protected]. I will gladly make an article out of them and share them with our viewers. Were here to spread the Disney Magic any way we can and I love viewer emails!

Thanks Again Joel!

Ask a Disney Question: Kids’ Counter Service Meals.

Ask a Disney Question: Kids' Counter Service Meals.

This question comes from Linda W., who asks:

We will be going to WDW with our grandkids 6 & 3, 4th Christmas in a row, but first time with the dining plan. I read for the counter service there’s no difference from adults and children’s. So if we bought 3 adults meals and 1 child’s meal would they take off 4 counter service period. On our world key card it would just show 4 counter service’s deducted or used? Thank you and keep up the good work.

Linda, thanks for your question and for reading Chip and Co. This is actually a pretty touchy question and I’m glad you asked it. In fact, I’ve addressed it twice on my own Disney blog; the most updated post is here.    The short answer is that Disney doesn’t differentiate between adult and child CS credits.  This means that you can buy an adult meal for a child, which is nice because it gives you some variety that you won’t find on the kids’ menu.  I’ve spoken to Disney several times about this policy and have received the same answer every time.   In fact, cast members have mentioned it to me when ordering, so it’s a widely accepted policy.

Here’s where it gets tricky.  According to the official dining plan rules, children have to eat off the children’s menu unless you’re eating someplace where there isn’t a child’s CS option; this used to be the case at Wolfgang Puck Express, for example.  Further, some cast members will not allow you to buy an adult meal with a child’s credit if you go through the line withthat child.   Personally, I’ve never seen that happen, as my children usually accompany me through the line and we’ve never been stopped, but I’ve read of instances where it has happened.   I’m not sure if this is official Disney policy or just a case of a cast member enforcing the rules very strictly.  I  know that this sometimes happens  in other areas, such as when a “rogue,” to use a term coined in some online Disney communities, cast member cancels  advanced dining reservations that are double-booked for the same time.  It’s not technically Disney’s policy to do this, but I’ve heard of it happening.   Are both situations apocryphal?   It’s possible.  I personally haven’t had it happen to me or any of my friends and have only heard “stories” of it happening on Disney message sites.  Sometimes you have to take that information with a grain of salt.

As I said above, I’ve been in contact several times with Disney over this issue and every time I’ve been told that Disney doesn’t differentiate and to not worry about it. This comes from cast members at the restaurants, at Disney Dining, and up the chain of command.  Now, I say this a lot because I believe it’s true:  Disney is a smart company. If they wanted to stop it (and they’ve stopped other things that were effectively “cheating” the system), they would have. After all, they can differentiate between adult and child counter service credits, so it wouldn’t be surprising that they could do the same with counter service credits if they wanted to.   Thousands of people have done it and Disney doesn’t seem to care.  I don’t personally think it’s cheating the system and I’m the kind of person who won’t use a fastpass after the time, so I tend to err on the side of caution.

Again, thanks for reading the site.  I hope you and your grandchildren have a wonderful vacation. Please write back to us and let us know if you run into any issues.

What’s Wrong with the Yeti?

What's Wrong with the Yeti?

There’s been a great deal of speculation among Disney fans as to why the Yeti in Animal Kingdom’s Expedition Everest stopped moving.  Now known among fans as “Disco Yeti,” a reference to the strobe light that flashes on the creature in lieu of movement, the old Yeti–huge, scary and a monument to Disney’s technical achievement in the field of audio animatronics–was last seen moving sometime in 2009.  So what happened?  No one knows for sure, but this morning the Orlando Sentinel tries to answer some questions.  Says writer Jason Garcia,

Though it appears only for a few seconds near the end of Expedition Everest, the entire ride is spent building to that climactic encounter. Everest’s queue winds through a yeti museum, featuring statues and masks depicting the beast, grainy black-and-white photographs, even a shredded tent and damaged camping equipment from a mysterious “lost expedition.

What do you think?  Is the Yeti such an integral part of the whole experience that  Expedition Everest isn’t the same without it?  To read the rest of the article, join a Facebook group to save the Yeti, see fun Youtube videos, and participate in some lively discussion in the comments, go here.
