Chubby Checker Brings down Curtain on Flower Power Concert Series at Epcot

Chubby Checker Brings down Curtain on Flower Power Concert Series at Epcot

“The Twist,” the song that defined Chubby Checker’s recording career, turns 50 in 2010, and Walt Disney World guests will have a chance to hear that classic performed live by the original artist May 14-16 at Epcot in the final Flower Power Concert Series shows of the year.

Chubby Checker’s recording of “The Twist” is the only song in rock and roll annals to enter the Billboard charts on two separate occasions and climb to No. 1 both times (in fall 1960 and early 1962).  Chubby Checker’s Web site (chubbychecker.com) also cites “The Twist” for introducing the concept of “dancing apart to the beat” – which later included the Monkey, Jerk, Frug, Fly, Pony, Hully Gully, Boogaloo, Swim, and Shake among others.

Chubby Checker’s shows will take place at America Gardens Theatre at 5:15, 6:30 & 7:45 p.m. each day and are included with Epcot admission.  Here’s the full Flower Power Concert Series schedule for May (subject to change without notice):

April 30-May 2: Fran Cosmo, former singer of Boston
May 7-9: Davy Jones
May 14-16: Chubby Checker & The Wildcats

The Flower Power Concert Series is held each Friday-Sunday in conjunction with the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival.  More information about the festival is available at disneyworld.com/flower.

Bomb squad briefly closes Disneyland shuttle area

A Disneyland shuttle area was briefly closed early Wednesday while the bomb squad checked out a wad of clay stuck to a pole, police said.

The substance was not dangerous, said Sgt. Rick Martinez, spokesman for the Anaheim Police Department.

The shuttle area off of Harbor Boulevard was closed for less than an hour, Martinez said. It reopened about 11:15 a.m..

Both theme parks remained open during the law-enforcement search.

During the closure, Disney employees told visitors to wait outside the gate or walk around through Downtown Disney, which would take about 20 to 25 minutes. Between 50 to 100 people stood on the sidewalk along Harbor Boulevard near Disney Way while police and fire officials checked out the scene.

Martinez said someone noticed the clay-like substance, which was less than the size of a golf ball.  The bomb squad was called to look at it, but chipped it off and realized it was nothing.

Betsy Sanchez, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman, said the area was closed for the safety of guests.

Party for the Planet on Earth Day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Another great article from the Disney Park Blog:

April 22 is a very special day for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Not only is it Earth Day, but it’s also our theme park’s birthday. Could it be 12 years already? As an opening team member, I can’t believe how quickly time has flown! And how fitting it is that Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened on Earth Day. Walt Disney — whose life-long love affair with wildlife and wild places inspired animated features, documentaries and more — would have been proud.

There’s no better place to celebrate Earth Day than at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, where Guests are invited to Party for the Planet in a fun-filled day overflowing with special activities from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

The party starts just inside the turnstiles, where Guests will be welcomed and begin their celebration. Guests can play earth-friendly games at several activity stations throughout the park, and then head to “party central” — Rafiki’s Planet Watch. It’s the perfect place for kids to get in touch with their inner amphibian (can your child jump as far as a frog?), sea turtle (what’s it like to wear a shell?) or other fascinating creature (be on the lookout for lady bugs). In celebration of the premiere on Earth Day of the new Disneynature film “Oceans,” families will learn actions they can take to protect ocean wildlife and habitats, including coral reefs.

Disneyland helps local community by generating $248 million in taxes for 2009

The Disneyland Resort and its visitors generated about $248 million in taxes for the area last year, according to a new report.

In addition, the resort contributed the equivalent of more than $12 million to the community through volunteer efforts, in-kind donations and cash.

This week, the company released the Disneyland Resort Community Report for 2009, which outlines how the business and its employees have contributed to the area. The Disneyland Resort is Orange County’s largest private employer with about 20,000 workers.

Here are some of the highlights of last year’s report:

  • Employees, called Disney VoluntEARS, gave more than 58,000 hours of service in 106 projects.
  • The company granted wishes to more than 500 children with life-threatening conditions.
  • Employees packed more than 10,000 donated food boxes.
  • More than 43,000 tons of material was diverted from landfills.
  • Energy consumption dropped 4 percent through conservation efforts, including using LED holiday lights.
  • The addition of the Grand Californian Hotel is making about $2.7 million in Anaheim taxes. See a previous story about the city’s agreement with Disney for the Grand Californian Hotel.

Joss Whedon directing “Avengers” for Disney/Marvel

Joss Whedon directing "Avengers" for Disney/Marvel

Joss Whedon is in final negotiations to direct the movie version of Marvel’s all-star super-hero team “The Avengers.”

Whedon’s name first surfaced on Web site iesb.net in early April as being on the shortlist of directors Marvel was considering for the gig. He quickly and quietly became the only candidate, with reports surfacing Tuesday he was in talks.

Marvel had no comment.

“The Avengers” is the culmination of Marvel’s movies and the storylines featuring the company’s individual heroes: Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man and Thor; other Marvel comic book mainstays include the Wasp, the Scarlet Witch, the Vision and Hawkeye although it remains to be seen which of those characters will make the cut.

Marvel’s dealmaking with its main actors in those previous movies provided for their inclusion in starring roles in “Avengers.” That means Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evan (Captain America) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) are expected to take part.

The involvement of Ed Norton, who portrayed Bruce Banner/Hulk, is less clear; the last Hulk movie, released by Universal in 2008, saw the actor clash with the company during post-production, leaving future association in doubt.

Marvel executives have a busy time ahead: “Iron Man 2” opens May 7; they are in production on “Thor” in New Mexico; and “Captain America” begins shooting in England this summer.

“Avengers” is expected to begin shooting in early 2011. Paramount, which has handled several of the company’s recent pictures, presumably will distribute, though Marvel itself is now wholly owned by Disney.

Whedon is well-regarded in the comic community for creating “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” spin-off show “Angel,” and cult sci-fi show “Firefly,” and he directed many of the shows’ episodes. The one feature he directed — the big-screen version of “Firefly” called “Serenity” — received good reviews but failed commercially.

Hiring Whedon as the director of “Avengers” would continue Marvel’s out-of-the-box thinking when choosing directors (and actors, for that matter). Jon Favreau, now a superstar director thanks to the first “Iron Man,” was considered a fish-out-of-water choice for that movie, having previously shot the well-reviewed box-office bomb “Zathura.”

Say Y.E.S. to a Disney Education

Say Y.E.S. to a Disney Education

“I would rather entertain and hope that people learned something than educate people and hope they were entertained.” – Walt Disney

Growing up, I was the kid who enjoyed school. I even grew up to be a high school math teacher. Timed multiplication worksheets and memorizing state capitals didn’t bother me but it did seem meaningless to some of my classmates – they just didn’t see the point. And, looking back, I can’t say I blame them. After all, it’s hard to see how knowing Montpelier is the capital of Vermont will help you write software code for the coolest real-time game engine or design the next skyscraper.
That first year teaching I had trouble understanding why sixteen year olds didn’t find factoring to solve an algebraic equation or effectively using the Pythagorean Theorem as satisfying or interesting as I did; maybe because I was trying to educate my students more than entertain them. After all, you can make sines and cosines only so interesting but I certainly was more successful as I brought more hands-on, dare I say fun math activities into my classroom. Walt was on to something.
As a teacher, I also had to contend with the coolness factor. Unfortunately, not all aspects of pop culture celebrate learning or excellence in school. And that’s a darn shame because knowledge gives you the tools to pursue your dreams, whatever they may be.

Walt Disney World as a Classroom

To me, the best classroom is one that combines book learning with the philosophy that experience is the best teacher; the collaboration of the two contributes to real understanding. What better classroom than Walt Disney World?
I was thrilled to stumble upon the The Disney Youth Education Series (Y.E.S.). Y.E.S. makes learning relevant by integrating National Education Standards and real world applications in accredited educational programs. How cool is that?
Specially trained Disney Cast Members facilitate these 2-3.5 hour programs which bring students backstage at some of their favorite attractions all in the name of learning and fun. Students will see first-hand how theories and principles in different disciplines are deftly leveraged by Imagineers to create attractions that both entertain and educate Walt Disney World guests, just as Walt Disney had hoped.

Some students may be relieved to know that there is no actual “classroom.” Instead, knowledgeable and engaging facilitators will find a quiet spot within the park to explain the program’s core concepts. Then, it’s off to the rides!

Something for Everyone

Science and technology are an essential part of many Walt Disney World attractions but bits and bytes alone can’t create the magic and fantasy that is so intrinsically Walt Disney World. The arts and the Disney culture are as much responsible for the success of the Happiest Place on Earth as the natural and physical sciences. This is good news for students and their teachers; the Disney Y.E.S. is comprehensive and offers nineteen programs in four different areas, Arts and Humanities, Leadership and Careers, Natural Sciences, and Physical Sciences. In short, there is something for everyone. Programs are geared to a specific age range and are available for students from grades K through 12 although the choices are more limited for children in the primary grades.
Here’s a sampling of the offerings.

Disney’s Wild by Nature “Walk on the wild side and explore the fascinating and surprising world of animal behavior! Through data collection, animal observations, select attractions and hands-on activities, students learn how animal research is helping.”

Disney’s World of Physics: Energy and Waves “Experience the Magic Kingdom®
Park through the mind of a Theme Park scientist! This interactive adventure studies select attractions to showcase the physics concepts of optics, acoustics, and magnetism in a real world context. Special hands-on examinations bring this program to life with a unique Disney touch.”

Magic Behind the Show: Improv & Teamwork “Think on your feet. During this
entertainment adventure, students participate in improvisational activities, practice and develop performance and team-building techniques, and come to know one another as members of a
creative team. Using their new knowledge, they perform a unique improvisational production.”

Disney’s Leadership Excellence: The Inside Track “Go to the head of the class. Your students – tomorrow’s business leaders – investigate proven management strategies employed within The Walt Disney Company, see how effective leadership produces innovation, and identify tactics they can adapt to help promote their own personal and professional success. This program offers practical training for students who aim to be productive leaders in their communities and careers.”

So, How does it Work?

If you’re part of a youth group of ten or more, you’re in. Reservations must be made at least six weeks in advance and up to a full year prior to your group’s preferred date. Each program requires a theme park admission ticket but Disney comes to the rescue by offering significantly discounted ticket packages that include admission to one Y.E.S. program. Additional programs may be added for $26 each. Unfortunately, existing annual passes and other Disney tickets will not be eligible for entry – tickets must be purchased through the Y.E.S. program.

Help, I’m Not Part of a Group

Good news! Disney has brought Open Enrollment to the Y.E.S. program this year so even if your eight year old doesn’t have nine close and personal friends you’re brave enough to chaperone at Disney World, he can still learn about the latest marine conservation methods. Open Enrollment sessions run on specific dates; they are running next during June and July 2010. Unless your child is over eighteen, either mom or dad will also need to attend the program. Participants in Disney’s Y.E.S. Open Enrollment programs enjoy the same benefits as larger groups, including discounted ticket packages. Compare a standard adult 5- day park hopper pass at $280 plus tax with the discounted Y.E.S. 5-day park hopper (including admission to one Y.E.S. program) which is priced at $157.70 with tax! There is a $4.50 handling charge per Y.E.S. order but it won’t break the bank. With the deep ticket discounts and behind the scenes looks at innovative attractions, I can’t think of a better reason to plan a summer Walt Disney World Resort trip.

Overcrowding won’t be an issue in Disney Y.E.S. Open Enrollment programs. They generally run with ten to fifteen students, ensuring lots of individual attention. So, how does Disney handle programs that are open to a wide range of grade levels? The Cast Member I spoke with at Disney Youth Programs reassured me that Disney groups participants by age and tailors instruction appropriately. For example, the Energy and Waves program may have one session for 3rd and 4th graders and another for 5th and 6th graders.
For more information and to register, visit Disney Youth Programs.

In my grade book, Disney gets a gold star for making education cool, relevant, and engaging. And isn’t that what it’s really all about? If your family has participated in a Disney Y.E.S. program, please use the comments section to share your review.

Walt Disney Signature and Cappellini Unveil Limited Edition Range

Walt Disney Signature, Disney’s first upscale, inspired, non-character, adult lifestyle brand and Cappellini, one of the most renowned design innovators worldwide, today unveiled five limited edition chairs at the Milan Furniture Fair in Italy. The combination of Cappellini’s reputation for innovation and the magic and inspiration of Disney has produced a series of everyday products that resemble works of art.

This introduction follows the success of Walt Disney Signature’s dining installation in collaboration with Cappellini for last month’s Dining By Design DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS) event in New York City.

A 3-dimensional sculpting of Mickey Mouse sitting on a giant chair, previously used for the DIFFA event display, was recreated at Fuori Salone, Milano Design Village to mark today’s launch. The Mickey sculpture is made of polyurethane, measures more than three metres tall and weighs 40 kilos.

“Walt Disney and Cappellini both have a shared approach to design, creativity and collaboration that turns everyday products into functional works of art,” commented Pamela Lifford, executive vice president, Home and Fashion, Disney Consumer Products. “Collaborating with a leading Italian design brand specialising in contemporary furnishings like Cappellini is another exciting step in continuing Walt Disney Signature’s philosophy on design and innovation.”

“This collaboration is the premise for a joint Cappellini and Walt Disney Signature stylistic commitment that promises to become a new, interesting and exciting chapter in the history of contemporary design, combining Cappellini’s strong inclination for innovation with the magical creativity of Disney,” added Giulio Cappellini, Art Director for Cappellini.

The Ribbon stool and the Fish Chair, Y’s de Luxe and Rive Droite armchairs are embellished with patterns, each one with a different image and underlying theme. The Ribbon’s new profile blends Cappellini design with the outline of Disney’s most famous character, Mickey Mouse; Y’s de Luxe and Rive Droite reflect and multiply the same image in striking processed fabrics; the Fish Chair’s shape is inspired by nature found in many Disney films like Bambi and produced in recycled material. Products will be available to the public in late Spring 2010.

'Ultimate Spider-Man' Animated Series Swings To Disney XD In Fall 2011!

In a press release, Marvel Entertainment announced that an “Ultimate Spider-Man” animated series will debut on The Disney XD Channel in the Fall of 2011. The series focuses on Peter Parker as he grows from a reckless teenager into the hero he was meant to become, all while contending with super-villains and typical teenage curve balls.

“Ultimate Spider-Man will be a unique journey exploring our favorite web-slinger as he teams up with other fan favorite Marvel Super Heroes in never before seen stories with a new life filled with great challenges, new friends, intense action and character growth,” said Eric S. Rollman, President of Marvel Animation, in a statement.

The creative team behind the series has not been revealed yet, but “Ultimate Spider-Man” writer Brian Michael Bendis announced on Twitter that he is not involved with the project — not at the moment, at least.

“Don’t have much [‘Ultimate Spider-Man’] cartoon news. Not involved with it at the moment,” Bendis revealed, saying that he’s currently working on the television adaptation of “Powers” and the “Fire” movie for Universal Pictures.
