Top Eats: Disneyworld Character Meals

Disney World Character Meals are a great way to meet the charters at a more leisurely pace. The surroundings are fun and kid-friendly and the characters come right to your table where you can talk to them and take pictures. Unfortunately, lot of times with character meals, you know going in you’re going to sacrifice food quality for atmosphere and character interaction.

Is it worth it to you? And are there character meals with good food? Here’s my personal top five:

5. Chef Mickey’s. Located in the Contemporary Resort, Chef Mickey’s serves breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet-style. After Cinderella’s Royal Table, it’s the most difficult character dining reservation to get. The food is plentiful, hot, and, for the most part, good. It’s not gourmet, but it’s a step up from what you’ll find at a buffet in your home town, say something like a Ryan’s or a Golden Corral. At Chef Mickey’s you’ll meet the Big Five: Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, and Donald. I find the character interaction here to be some of the best on property. It’s a must-do for families with little kids.

4. Crystal Palace. At Crystal Palace (pictured above), located in the Magic Kingdom, you’ll meet Winnie the Pooh and friends in a cheerful, airy room with plenty of windows and light. The food is similar to what you’ll find at Chef Mickey’s: Roasted meats, veggies, salads, cold cuts, Pasta, and desserts. This meal was something of a surprise to me, as I mainly picked it because I’d always wanted to eat there, so I didn’t have any notions about what to expect from the characters. I ended up loving the character interaction here. Piglet especially was very engaging with our three children. I also have to mention the cast members who were really great and deserved every penny of their tips. If you’re looking for a nice place to cool off in the Magic Kingdom and for an opportunity for you children to meet these characters, who can be somewhat difficult to find in the parks, this is a great choice.

3. Akershus Royal Banquet Hall. Located in the Norway Pavilion at Epcot and costing only one table service credit, this meal gives you the most bang for your buck if you want to see as many princesses as possible, including some rarer ones like Mulan. As an added bonus, the food is really good and the service is probably some of the best you’ll find. Don’t be put off by some of the Norwegian specialties on the menu. There are plenty of choices for everyone, even for picky kids. The last time we were there, we saw Ariel, Aurora, Snow White, Cinderella, and Jasmine. Each princess spent a nice amount of time at our table and posed for pictures. My kids loved it. Like most character meals it can get a little busy, but I thought the way the dining room is broken up helped make it feel more cozy.

2. 1900 Park Fare. Located in the Grand Floridian, this character dinner is sort of an outlier and maybe that’s part of it’s charm. Not only is the food really good, the characters really go all out here. Sure, you’ll see Cinderella and her Prince, but the real treat is her Stepmother, Madame Tremaine, and her Stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella, who go all out and deliver a fun and campy performance. This dinner, which features grilled meats, pastas, and salads, is usually one of the easier character buffets to get a reservation for as it’s fairly low on guest’s radar. If your little Princess has her heart set on seeing Cinderella, this might be you best bet for character interaction.

1. Cinderella’s Royal Table. The most difficult reservation to get in all Disney World, this meal in Cinderella’s castle is so popular you’ll want to call first thing in the morning at 180 days out. I thought a lot about where to put this one, because I’m not crazy about the food, but in the end it all came down to location. Sure, the food isn’t all that great and let’s be honest: At two table service credits or $57.19 per adult (plus taxes and gratuity), it’s really expensive. But the point is, you’re here to meet Cinderella in her castle and for a lot of people, that makes it worth it and for this reason, I have to include it as the number one character meal in Disney World. The price includes a photo with Cinderella herself. Entrees include grilled salmon and pork chops, sandwiches, and pastas.

How about you? Do you have a favorite character meal? We’d love to hear about it in the comments section.

Split Second Speeds across the Finish Line to Arrive at Retail Outlets

One of the most anticipated video games of 2010 is now available with Split/Second arriving at retail outlets throughout North America today. Published by Disney Interactive Studios and developed by Black Rock Studio, the dynamic game is releasing on the Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation(R)3 computer entertainment system, Windows PC and iPhone(R)/iPod Touch(R).

Winner of the prestigious Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 2009, Best Racing Game award from the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2009, Split/Second is one of the most anticipated video games of 2010 with a highly successful demo on Xbox LIVE(R) online entertainment network (rated 4.5 stars out of 5 by users) and PlayStation(R)Network.

In Split/Second, players don’t just race to the finish line to beat their opponents, they build up their power meter through deft driving and trigger “power plays,” explosive moments that take out opponents or alter the track. The game takes place within a hyper-competitive reality television show with city-sized sets rigged for destruction. Each track has numerous power plays that can be strategically triggered by skilled drivers. Competitors in Split/Second don’t just collide with other vehicles to knock them from the track — they can trigger blockbuster action film-like explosive events that drastically alter the dynamics of the race. Players must use strategy and pinpoint timing to derail opponents, tactically alter the track or create entirely new routes.

“With massive environments that players can dynamically change to take out opponents and alter the track, Split/Second redefines the action racing genre and provides a whole new level of fun for all video game fans,” said Craig Relyea, senior vice president, global marketing, Disney Interactive Studios. “Black Rock Studio is among the world’s best game development studios and Split/Second is an incredible entry in their impressive portfolio.”

As many as eight players can compete online in Split/Second through Xbox LIVE, PlayStation Network and online on Windows PC. Also, two players can race against each other on the same system in the same room through split-screen features.

Black Rock Studio pioneered the innovative heads up display (HUD) affixed to the back of the player’s vehicle. The Split/Second HUD showcases the player’s relevant information (place, lap number, etc.) on the back bumper of the car, the area of the screen where players primarily focus during racing games.

“When we were early in development on the concept, we expected racing fans throughout the world to be passionate about Split/Second but the feedback since we announced the game has far exceeded our expectations,” said Nick Baynes, game director, Black Rock Studio. “We wanted to create something really fun that had never been done before in the racing genre and Split/Second accomplishes that.”

Black Rock Studio has an impressive heritage in the racing video game genre. The studio became the first developer to win consecutive Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 in the racing category with two different franchises after having won with PURE in 2008 and Split/Second in 2009. Split/Second was also selected Best Racing Game of E3 2009 by G4TV and featured on the cover of PlayStation: The Official Magazine’s Hugest Games of 2010 issue. Also, Black Rock’s first game after joining Disney Interactive Studios, the action racing game PURE, won numerous awards. Along with the Game Critics Award, PURE was named among the top 10 video games of 2008 by Entertainment Weekly.

The Split/Second app for iPhone/iPod Touch, available via iTunes, was conceived and designed with help from Black Rock Studio. The game mirrors the console version and features diverse locations, including the airport, downtown, ports and power plant. A Black Rock Studio-designed entertainment district also appears exclusively in the app. The game includes 19 vehicles to select and a six-person network multiplayer over Wi-Fi and locally through Bluetooth.

Split/Second is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and older by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). The game has a suggested retail price of $59.99 (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3), $39.99 (Windows PC) and $6.99 (iPhone).

Split/Second: Velocity, the console and PC game’s title in Europe only, will be available across Europe beginning on May 20.

That Disney Christmas Magic

I recently talked a little about what to expect at the Disney parks during the Christmas holidays…and how despite all that, my family continues to make plans to visit Walt Disney World at this time of year. Why, you may be asking, would we go through all that?

Honestly, this is one of the most magical times of the year, even for Disney. There are so many beautiful and fantastic things happening that we just love to see. So much so that, the years we don’t visit at Christmas time, we just really miss it. Crazy, I know.

(Now I will say that these holiday highlights can be experienced all through December, so if you want that Disney Christmas magic at a calmer pace, you can visit earlier in the month if your schedule permits…and avoid the crowds too. For us, going in early December doesn’t work…so if we want a Disney Christmas, we need to take the crowds too.)

The Magic of the Magic Kingdom

Let’s start with the Magic Kingdom. You will find Cinderella’s Castle decked out in breathtaking “icicle” lights each night. Be sure to get pictures: if you are like me and not great with taking night-time pictures, then get a few PhotoPass shots in front of the castle. Trust me you’ll be glad you did!

Magic Kingdom also hosts Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party on a number of nights in December, prior to Christmas. This is a separate ticket, so if you want to attend, you will need to purchase tickets separately from your park pass. One of the highlights is the Christmas parade, featuring the famous Wooden Soldiers. If you want to see the parade, but don’t plan on going to the Party before Christmas, you will be able to see it daily, every afternoon, typically starting Christmas Day…no separate ticket needed! (Please note: The Walt Disney World Christmas Parade that you see on TV every year on Christmas morning is not a live event and is, in fact, taped weeks before. So do not go to the Magic Kingdom on Christmas morning expecting to see/be in the parade!)

Epcot and the Holidays Around the World

What about Epcot? While the decorations are beautiful, World Showcase offers a number of wonderful programs related to the “Holidays Around the World” theme, and if you have ever wondered what it would be like to celebrate Christmas in another country, here is your chance. Each country presents their favorite holiday traditions, and many have Holiday Storytellers that highlight some very interesting and fun customs: don’t be surprised to see Father Christmas in England, Pere Noel in France, and St. Nicholas in Germany to name a few. It is delightful and yes, educational, in a very fun way.

Probably the highlight of the Walt Disney World holidays in Epcot is the Candlelight Processional, a nightly presentation of the Christmas story with a celebrity guest narrator and a huge massed choir made up of professional, college, and high school choirs from around the country. Although there are 3 showings each night, the line for seats starts well in advance of each show. You can reserve a seat by purchasing a Candlelight Processional dinner package, and I highly recommend it. If you don’t want to do the dinner package, then assign someone in your group to wait in the stand-by line to be certain of getting a seat. This is a dramatic and powerful performance that is always the highlight of our Disney Christmas visits.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios and its Christmas Spectacle

Disney’s Hollywood Studios has their fair share of holiday entertainment with the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, held nightly on the Streets of America. There are literally millions of lights in this display and it is truly an amazing one. The streets can get very crowded however, during this busy season, so to get the most of your visit here, go during the nightly Fantasmic show, or at the end of the evening, before the park closes. It is much more enjoyable when you are not elbow to elbow with people!

Jingling at Animal Kingdom…and More

If you still want more parades, then Animal Kingdom has Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade, with all the characters in their holiday finest. Downtown Disney has the Festival of the Seasons, where you can finish any holiday shopping, visit Santa before Dec. 24, and say hi to Santa Goofy from Dec. 25 to Jan. 4. And don’t miss visiting the holiday decorations at the Disney resorts as well. On your list should be the Grand Floridian for the Gingerbread House, the Boardwalk for the Carousel, and the Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge for the enormous trees. These should not be missed, plus they are great ways to get away from the crowds for a bit.

Christmas at Walt Disney World is absolutely one of the loveliest times of year to visit. With beautiful holiday decorations and a festive atmosphere, Disney World becomes even more magical than it usually is….and keeps us coming back, despite the crowds. What about you? Have you visited Disney during the Christmas season?

New Disney Pin Trading Designs Using a Classic Icon

I love these new Pin Trading designs from Julie Young! She is so creative and they all look very cool and very original. Check out this article and photos from Disney Park Blog talking about these new designs:

“I’m just making this up.” That phrase is one of my favorites that I frequently hear from Julie Young, long-time product developer for pins with Disney Theme Park Merchandise. When Julie says that phrase, it is typically followed by some rough pencil sketch (to which I save on the back of my office door), and an idea that will soon become the next highly-desired pin. Following a recent business trip, Julie was inspired to create some of my new favorite pins using a classic icon everyone knows and loves.

“When I joined Disney in October 1994, I started as a fine jewelry buyer for Resorts and shops like the former 24KT Precious Adornments store at Downtown Disney Marketplace,” explained Julie. “So naturally, I’m drawn to jewelry. I like designing pins that can be used for more than just trading.”New Disney Pin Trading Designs Using a Classic Icon

Julie joined the Disney Pin Team in 2002 and has developed everything from limited edition to open edition pins and accessories. I’m continually amazed at her ability to create fresh, exciting and (the most important ingredient) fun Disney pins. In recent years, she has created several Mickey Mouse icon pins featuring everything from animal prints to pumpkins. There is something wonderful about simple designs that have the ability to effectively convey a story. In fact, one of our most popular and longest selling open edition pins is the Mickey Mouse icon featuring the American Flag. It’s a simple design and Guests have loved it for years!

Coming Soon 2010 Disneyland Resort Summer Fun Pass

This news comes to us from the guys over at Mouse Planet. This is not an official word as of yet from Disney but you would be safe to say its coming very soon.

Details of the 2010 version of last year’s very popular Summer Fun Pass have not yet been posted to the Disneyland Web site, but the terms and conditions section of the KOST World of Color contest page makes mention of the new promotion. We expect Disney to formally announce the offer later this week, but here are the details we know right now:

The 2010 3-Day Summer Fun Pass is $108, $9 more expensive than the 2009 version, and offers Southern California residents (ZIP Codes 90000–93599) and Northern Baja California residents (ZIP Codes 21000–22999) three one-day admissions to either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure within a 45 day period. The ticket is the same price for adults and children.

Unlike the 2009 offer, this ticket is NOT a park hopper, and allows admission to only one park per day. This ticket has a 45-day “fuse,” (instead of the usual 13- or 30-day limit), giving you more time to plan your return visits, but has more block out dates than last year: July 2-4 and August 22-23. The first use of the pass must be between June 11 and August 29, 2010.

Last year these tickets were offered at Disneyland.com Disney Stores and at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, as well as participating Vons, Albertsons, Ralphs, Stater Bros., Food 4 Less and Gelsons grocery stores; Toys ‘R’ Us stores; and Dearden’s stores. We haven’t heard where the 2010 tickets will be sold, but expect to find them at retails which already sell Disneyland park admission.

Disney Announces Winnie the Pooh Film to Open in Theaters in July 2011.

Disney is taking another chance with traditional animation following the critical acclaim of last year’s Princess and the Frog, announcing that they are working on a new Winnie the Pooh film to be released in theaters in July 2011.  The film will be produced by John Lasseter, the man behind Toy Story and Cars,  and directed by  Stephen Anderson, who also directed Meet the Robinsons for the company.  It will be based on five short stories about Pooh and Friends and will feature the voices of  Craig Ferguson and Jim Cummings.

I love animation as much as the next person and as a mom, I see a lot of it.  I don’t really know much about the medium from a technical standpoint, but like most people, I prefer traditional animation and I’m happy to hear that with this film, Disney is making yet another commitment to hand drawn animation rather than going entirely with CGI films.  Even with an untrained eye, the difference in quality is incredible; I was so in awe during The Princess and the Frog that  I couldn’t help but compare it to other recent films I’d seen that were computer animated.

You can read more about the film here and here.
