Disney award helps kids get immersed in theater

This article comes to us from the Orlando Sentinel:

Mickey Mouse came to town this week, carrying a check for $8,300 for the Bay Street Players’ Young People’s Theatre.

The iconic Disney character handed over the check and sets of Mickey Mouse ears to Elizabeth Scholl, the Bay Street Players’ outgoing executive director who wrote the grant application; Michael Morman, the new executive director; and Deborah Carpenter, a founder of the Bay Street Players.

“I’m still wearing my mouse ears,” Scholl said an hour after the ceremony. “I don’t think I’ll ever take them off.”

The money, from Disney Helping Kids Shine, is one of 31 grants awarded to nonprofits in Central Florida that have children’s programs and/or outreach efforts. Disney picked the organization’s Young People’s Theatre from 170 applications.

The 31 nonprofits shared $500,000, a part of Disney’s $1.2 million giving program that benefited 57 organizations, schools and groups that promote children’s well-being.

Scholl sought money to help support the Young People’s Theatre’s touring group, which has been visiting elementary schools each spring for more than 30 years, and to allow more money for scholarships.

“When I was enrolled in Young People’s Theatre, I won the Ed Dawkins scholarship,” Scholl said. “The YPT [Young People’s Theatre] shaped my life. I know what a difference it can make and I want to have more people be a part of this program.”

The Young People’s Theater, founded in 1975 by Carpenter, is the oldest continuously running children’s theater program in Central Florida.

In the past year, 55 children were enrolled during the school season with 15 percent receiving scholarships and 61 were enrolled during the summer, with 28 percent receiving scholarships, according to Morman.

“Learning about the YPT was the last phase of my learning about the Bay Street Players,” said Morman, who will officially replace Scholl in July. “I saw the children and what they actually learn. I have seen the relationships the new kids have formed. This was Elizabeth’s work and the grant is a great way to say goodbye.”

Resort Showdown: Pop Century vs. The Grand Floridian.

poppool
poppool
Well, this hardly seems fair.  Comparing the Grand Floridian with little ole’ Pop Century?  Well hear me out.  Sure the  Grand is a great resort, but there are some very nice reasons (including tangible, in your pocket reasons) why Pop Century might just be a better resort.  Let’s look at the advantages of both.

Cost: A full-price standard room at the Grand Floridian will cost about four times what a standard full-price room at Pop costs. Kind of staggering when you put it down in writing, isn’t it?

Advantage: No question, Pop is a better deal no matter how creative your math when you explain it to your spouse. And believe me, I can get pretty creative.

Amenities:  All Disney resorts have great theming; it’s what sets them apart from off site hotels.  But some have better amenities than others.  If you’re wondering what pools your kids will prefer, Pop wins with fun, lively kid-friendly pools.

Resort Showdown: Pop Century vs. The Grand Floridian.

On the other hand, for adults travelling without children, the Grand wins hands down with some of the most quiet, elegant pools on property.  You can also rent a cabana for a day or half day at the Grand  Floridian and hang out in your own private space.  And while it comes with a fairly high price tag, the Grand Floridian has a spa where you can also get a poolside massage.  There’s also a beach and cabanas for relaxing.

Resort Showdown: Pop Century vs. The Grand Floridian.

For me, deciding where to eat is a big part of planning a WDW vacation.  I want variety and easy access to good food.  With four table-service restaurants on site, including the top rated restaurant in Central Florida, Victoria and Albert’s, the Grand Floridian outshines Pop, which has no sit-down restaurants.   For a casual meal however, I think Pop’s food court beats  the  Grand every time, as its has really excellent variety and quality.  The quick service location at the Grand is slightly worse than what you would find in a mall food court, but you are a short monorail ride away from the Contemporary Resort and the Polynesian, both of which offer better quick service meals.

Resort Showdown: Pop Century vs. The Grand Floridian.

The first time you walk into the Grand Floridian you’re bound to be just a little bit awed.  The lobby is really extraordinary, the best on Disney property in my opinion. You could easily pass a couple of hours sitting there, just people watching and soaking up the atmosphere.   An orchestra plays there daily.  Yes, I said an orchestra.

Resort Showdown: Pop Century vs. The Grand Floridian.

Pop, on the other hand, has a small but lively little lobby decorated with memorabilia from the latter part of the 20th century.

Resort Showdown: Pop Century vs. The Grand Floridian.

Notice how shiny it looks?  Yes, it’s that clean.

What really sets the Grand apart from Pop is that it’s on the monorail. When you stay at the Grand Floridian, you’re just a couple of minutes away from the Magic Kingdom.  This is a huge advantage if you’re planning on taking a break during the afternoon.  Should you tire of the monorail, there’s always boat access to the Magic Kingdom.  Of course, you’re just a few minutes away from the Ticket and Transportation Center and a monorail transfer to Epcot.

Advantage:  The Grand Floridian.  It’s beautiful, on the monorail, has four table service restaurants, and a gorgeous lobby. The grounds are amazing enough that even non-guests schedule photo shoots there.

Rooms: At around 260 squre feet, Pop’s rooms are small, the kind of rooms that bring new meaning to the term  “family togetherness.”   Fearturing two double beds, a TV with stand, and a small table and two chairs, Pop’s rooms have very little theming other than a couple of framed collages representing the building’s decade and a Disney themed border on the walls. The rooms at the Grand Floridian are, not surprisingly, far roomier with two queen sized beds, a desk and chair, a large TV armoire, and a daybed. There’s also a balcony.  While Pop’s decor is very basic but upbeat, rooms at the Grand are airy with subtle, feminine patterns and furniture.

Resort Showdown: Pop Century vs. The Grand Floridian.

What about bathrooms and closets?  At Pop you get a small rod and shelf right next to the sink for a closet as opposed to an actual roomy closet at the Grand Floridian. Bathrooms at the Grand Floridian are spacious and pretty, with a separate sink/dressing area and a shower/bath combination and toilet in its own room. The bathrooms at Pop are tiny; in fact, it’s one of the biggest complaints about Pop. The small sink area is in the actual room, with the toilet and tub occupying the actual bathroom, which is so small that it requires a bigt of  gymnastics to actually close the door. There have been complaints about soundproofing, but I can’t personally confirm this as I slept like a rock during my stay there.

I found both resorts to be equally clean and well-maintained, both the rooms and the common areas.

Advantage: Well, okay. This is getting unfair. Of course the Grand’s rooms are better.  Next!

Customer Service: If you’re staying at a deluxe resort because you think the service is better than at a value, save your money. From my experience, cast members at all Disney resorts are stellar, regardless of the level. It’s true that the Grand Floridian has a higher number of cast members per guest than does Pop, but I didn’t feel that effected the level of service I received. Keep in mind that we didn’t require anything special during our stay, nor did we have any emergencies, so I can’t speak to how my interactions with cast members might have been under special circumstances, but for the normal guest experience, both resorts were great. In both cases, I arrived at MCO in 9:00 in the morning and was in the Magic Kingdom by 11:00, which is pretty impressive given that it’s a longer ride from Pop than it is to ride the monorail from the Grand Floridian. In truth, I might have gotten to the Magic Kingdom from the Grand sooner if I hadn’t been gawking. It’s such a beautiful hotel.

Advantage:Tie, with a slight advantage to Pop for trying harder like an awkward, funny girl at a Sadie Hawkin’s dance.

Grounds/Atmosphere: I don’t think Disney resorts really photograph as beautiful as they are. You miss out on the scale and the full experience.  The Grand looks stuffy and old fashioned, when in fact the buildings feel very light and airy. It’s also not as feminine as you might think from the photographs.

Pop, bless it’s heart, looks garish in photographs. And to a degree, it is, but that’s really the whole point. The atmosphere is a both a bit frenetic and nostalgic, meant to be evocative of the old roadside motels that you might have stayed in as a kid on the way to Disney World. But unlike those old motels, the grounds are beautifully maintained, the pools are clean, and the common areas are nice. I love the lobby at Pop. It’s a bit more subdued than the rest of the resort but it’s still fun and the memorabilia is fun to look at. Pop has a great feeling, full of families and couples having a good time. There’s a great energy to the place that I don’t find at any other resort.

Resort Showdown: Pop Century vs. The Grand Floridian.

I know a number of people who don’t feel comfortable at the Grand Floridian, but I think that’s mainly an internal thing.  I honestly haven’t seen a huge difference in the guests from values versus deluxe resorts; everyone is sporting a kind of resort casual look that gradually gets more rumpled as the day goes on.  And certainly the casts members are no less friendly at the Grand as they are at Pop.  You’ll be treated just as well if you come into the Grand Floridian in a t-shirt as you will if you’re dressed to the nines.

What about for families travelling with kids?  All Disney resorts are kid friendly, but in my experience, the Grand Floridian seems to attract more adult guests than children.   That’s not to say that there aren’t lots of activities for children at the Grand Floridian and that there aren’t plenty of kids.   But comparatively speaking, particularly when contrasted with the  All Stars or Pop,  it’s just a more “grown-up” resort.   One reason is that its popular with couples celebrating honeymoons and other special occasions.   It’s also wedding central, with the Wedding Pavilion and reception areas located at the resort.  If you’re looking for a relatively quiet, romantic hotel on Disney property, the Grand Floridian is it.

Advantage:  Tie.  Both are nice-looking resorts.  It depends on your tastes.

Summary. Okay, obviously, a comparison between Pop and the Grand isn’t entirely fair. The Grand Floridian is Disney’s flagship hotel. Pop, while loved by many, is a value resort. But look at it this way: You can go to Disney World at lot more often and for a longer amount of time if you stay at Pop. Sure, the room is smaller. And it’s not on the monorail.  You have to decide how important theming and convenience is to you, but if you’re juggling costs and trying to figure out how to make a Disney vacation work, Pop is a great option.  You certainly shouldn’t feel that you’re missing out on something because you stay at  Pop instead of a deluxe hotel.

Disney Channel Orders New Dance-Filled Buddy Series, “Shake it Up!”

Disney Channel Orders New Dance-Filled Buddy Series, "Shake it Up!"

Disney Channel has ordered “Shake It Up!,” a buddy comedy centered around a teen dance show, created by Chris Thompson (“Laverne and Shirley,” “Bosom Buddies,” “The Naked Truth,” “Action”) and executive-produced by Thompson and Rob Lotterstein (“The War at Home,” “Ellen”).

It stars 12-year-old Bella Thorne (“Big Love”) and 13-year-old Zendaya. The multi-camera series will begin production in Hollywood, California, in July for a scheduled Fall 2010 premiere on Disney Channel. The announcement was made today by Gary Marsh, president, Entertainment, and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide.

Marsh said, “Newcomers Bella Thorne and Zendaya make for one of the most likable and engaging BFF duos we’ve ever seen. And while buddy comedies have been around since the start of television, what makes ‘Shake It Up’ unique is that this is the first time anyone has incorporated dancing into the underlying premise of a sitcom.”

The comedy series introduces two high-spirited characters, best friends CeCe Jones and Raquel “Rocky” Blue, whose dreams of becoming professional dancers are realized when they become background dancers on the most popular teen dance show, “Shake it Up, Chicago,” a gig they land thanks to their longtime and well-connected friend, Deuce. Between learning a wide range of new dance styles, navigating the backstage antics at the show (especially with their rivals, Tinka and Gunther) and their newfound social status at school, the girls are on their way to new and fun adventures, some that will test their friendship.

Starring are Bella Thorne as CeCe Jones; Zendaya as Raquel “Rocky” Blue; Kenton Duty (“Lost”) as Gunther; Adam Irigoyen (“Wizards of Waverly Place”) as Deuce; and Davis Cleveland (“Good Luck Charlie,” “Desperate Housewives”) as Flynn Jones, CeCe’s precocious younger brother. The series was created by Chris Thompson and will be executive-produced by Rob Lotterstein and Thompson. Rosero McCoy (“Camp Rock 2 The Final Jam”) choreographed the pilot episode.  “Shake It Up!” is a production of It’s a Laugh Productions, Inc.

Disney Channel is a 24-hour kid-driven, family inclusive television network that taps into the world of kids and families through original series and movies.  Currently available on basic cable in over 99 million U.S. homes and to millions of other viewers on Disney Channels around the world, Disney Channel is part of the Disney/ABC Television Group.

Baby Elephant Arrives at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

The elephant herd at Disney’s Animal Kingdom just expanded – by about 288 pounds. That amount represents the weight of the newborn female calf born late last night.

Twenty-two-year-old Donna gave birth to the herd’s fifth offspring after gaining more than 400 pounds during a 22-month gestation. This latest addition, which has yet to be named, is the second calf for Donna, which gave birth to a female calf, Nadirah, in 2005. This birth raises the number of elephants in the Disney’s Animal Kingdom herd to thirteen, including five males and eight females.

“Elephant births are among the most amazing and complicated processes in the animal kingdom,” according to Jackie Ogden, Ph.D., vice president of Disney’s Animal Programs. “A team of dedicated animal professionals have worked with the expecting mother attentively throughout the course of her pregnancy. At this point, we’re optimistic for the calf’s likelihood of survival and are thrilled that both Donna and her calf are doing well.”

With assistance from the animal care team, the newborn, whose first tentative steps are becoming stronger and more confident, is now successfully nursing from her mother. Donna has been getting to know her calf, gently touching the young animal with her trunk. The next critical milestone is for the calf to continue the bonding process with her mother who will teach her important lessons and protect her as she is introduced to the rest of the savannah herd in several weeks.

Donna became pregnant through artificial insemination in July 2008 and received extensive pre-natal care throughout her pregnancy. Zookeepers added more exercises to her daily routine, hoping to strengthen the muscles needed during the birthing process. In addition to regular ultrasounds, veterinarians and elephant managers monitored her hormone levels on a daily basis to help them determine when she would give birth. Labor appeared imminent last night and the animal care team remained with her to provide round-the-clock care until the female calf was born May 20 around 11:30 p.m.

This is the fifth elephant born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. In addition to Donna’s first female calf, Nadirah, Tufani, a male, was born in 2003; Kianga, a female, was born in 2004; and Tsavo, the youngest male, joined the herd in 2008. All remain on the savannah at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Disney has been at the forefront of efforts to better understand and care for endangered elephants. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is part of a breeding program coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) that is focused on sustaining the elephant population in North America. AZA’s Elephant Species Survival Plan has called for a five-fold increase in African elephant reproduction efforts – using both natural and artificial breeding methods – in order to create a self-sustaining elephant population among North American zoos and wildlife centers

Dinner on a Disney cruise is as much about presentation as food

This great article is from Kristin Ford at the Daily Disney. She talks about the wonderful meals she had on her recent Disney Cruise. I am counting down the days till our next years Disney Cruise so this article really appeals to me!

A cruise offers a lot of fun activities. And for many, fine dining is reason enough to cast off on the seas.

Meals on a Disney cruise can be as casual or as formal as you choose. There are three large-scale restaurants on the Disney Wonder, and passengers are assigned to each at least once for dinner. Plus, there are numerous buffets, quick-service spots by the pools and 24-hour room service.

We started off in Triton’s, whose theme is a nod to the Little Mermaid story. The elegant dining room is decorated in an Art Deco style with sea colors; a gorgeous mural of Ariel and her father, King Triton, is the centerpiece. For dinner, the adult menu has a French flare, though breakfast and lunch are American dishes. (The children’s menu is basically the same in all three restaurants.) My husband and I liked the food at Triton’s the best.

The second night, we ate in Animator’s Palate. Disney describes the contemporary menu as “Pacific Island foods, Asian cooking techniques, California freshness and other cultural and culinary influences.” While the food wasn’t our favorite, the atmosphere and show were. When you first enter, the restaurant appears to be decorated in black and white with character sketches on the walls. The animation comes to life and changes to bright colors as the meal progresses.

On our final night, we ate at Parrot Cay, which is decorated as a Caribbean island grill house and serves tropical fare for dinner. (Breakfast and lunch are American cuisine.) The experience wasn’t unfamiliar as we had eaten lunch and breakfast in that restaurant during the cruise. The island-inspired show, in which children were invited to join the wait staff in doing the limbo, was fun.

Building a Disney Star Wars Weekends Ad

Here is a very cool video how Yellow Shoes Creative Group creates the Star Wars Weekends ads you see on the internet:

Each year, our Yellow Shoes Creative Group creates a series of unique Star Wars Weekends ads featuring characters in settings like they’ve never been seen before – and this year is no exception. One of my favorites puts General Grievous on Sunset Boulevard. But look closely…sharp-eyed Disney Parks Blog readers will be able to spot some details in the image that do not exist at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. That’s the genius of Yellow Shoes Production Director Ed Brown. Ed took the original image from Disney photographer (blog author) Garth Vaughn and created an amazing atmosphere. Here’s how it happened:
