Send Me Your Disney Photos!

Send Me Your Disney Photos!

I would love to make a little photo “collage” of your photos if you’re going to either of the Halloween celebrations at Disneyland or WDW! You can submit photos to me at [email protected]. Please include your name, where you’re from, and a little description of where you are in the park/what you’re doing.

In the mean time, I’ll do my best to find a photo of when I went trick or treating at Disneyland when I was really little in the 1990’s. I was Belle, and I took a photo with, of course, Belle and Beast. Once I find it, I’ll share if with you! (I KNOW for a fact that it’s in my house somewhere. I just don’t know what my mother did with it.)

So remember, if you submit a photo to me:

1) Your name

2) Where you’re from

3) Description of where you are/what you’re doing.

New Disneyland Paris Report Shows Parents have forgotten how to play

New Disneyland Paris Report Shows Parents have forgotten how to play

A new report from Disneyland Paris exposes the issues faced by parents and children during family playtime

• One in five parents (21%) in the UK admit to forgetting how to play with their children, blaming a lack of inspiration, confused messaging and a shortage of time

• Parents of today should consider a ‘back to basics’ approach to remember their own childhoods and the games they enjoyed when they were young, and look to these activities to connect with their own children

• A third of parents (30%) think playing with their children is boring and one in ten children (16%) actually pick up on this feeling during family playtime

• 55% of children want more quality fun time with their parents

• Today’s time-starved society is impacting the way we play with half of parents (50%) blaming work and chores as barriers to the amount of quality time they spend with their children

• Sibling rivalry is a cause of tension for family play with nearly a third (32%) of parents citing this as the biggest problem when they try and play with their children

Play is in danger of becoming a lost ‘art’ for families across the UK, as 21% of time-starved parents admit that they have forgotten how to play and struggle to engage their children in creative and imaginative activities that will help their development according to a new report commissioned by Disneyland Paris to coincide with the opening of Toy Story Playland – a new land of attractions and experiences in the theme park.

The ‘State of Play, Back to Basics’ report, authored by Professor Tanya Byron, takes into account the views of 2,000 parents and 2,000 children (aged 5-15) and examines the play habits of the nation. It is clear from the study that the games that the children of today enjoy are not too dissimilar to the pursuits enjoyed by their parents, and with this in mind, parents should adopt a ‘back to basics’ approach in order to re-connect with their children through play. This doesn’t mean drastic measures for small returns, rather they should remember the games they enjoyed playing as children such as action men, dressing up and let’s pretend, and introduce them to their own children to reignite their imagination and the fun they had playing these games when they were young.

The Importance of Environment to Play

Safety and security are unsurprisingly crucial to creating the right environment for play for parents in today’s society and proved the most important consideration for over half of adults (54%) questioned.

An environment where children could learn whilst playing was the second most important consideration for parents with 52% believing this to be vital when choosing an environment in which to play, followed closely behind by interactive (33%) and imaginative environments (18%). With this in mind, it is therefore unsurprising that theme parks such as Disneyland Paris which focus on story-telling and interactive engagement, were viewed as being ideal places for family play by over a quarter of parents (29%) as they provide a safe environment and add educational yet fun elements to play.

Enriching, colourful and imaginative environments are also key to providing an effective platform for play for almost three quarters (74%) of parents. This again reinforces why places such as Disneyland Paris are high up the list of locations for family play as they provide vibrant environments that inspire children to get creative whilst being safe, secure and educational. As a family destination, the park provides many opportunities for children and adults to play together in fantasy worlds which combine beloved characters, extraordinary experiences and magical encounters for millions of guests each year.

Bridging the Generation Gap by Going Back to Basics

A lack of communication between the generations as to what games and activities they should play together emerged as a key contributor to the problems faced at family playtime.

The lack of understanding on how to engage children in exciting play that everyone will enjoy means it is not only children who are left feeling dispirited. Almost a third (30%) of parents admitted that they think playing with their children is boring, and over one in ten children (16%) picked up that they feel this way.

This communication breakdown is also highlighted in the differing views the generations have on technology. Nearly one in three parents (30%) choose to play computer games with their children thinking that’s what their kids will most enjoy. However, nine out of ten children (89%) said computer games were something they would rather play on their own while three quarters (75%) said they would prefer to spend time with their parents enjoying more traditional pursuits, such as challenging each other at board games or playing outdoors together.

Playtime Pressures – work, sibling rivalry and confusion take the fun out of playtime

Time starved parents are letting work pressures and everyday chores severely impact on the amount of quality time they spend with their children with 50% of parents admitting this was an issue. Nearly a third of children (30%) recognise work worries as being the reason that their parents are too busy to play with them showing that parents need try to put playtime first for their children’s sake.

The age old problem of sibling rivalry is also an issue that parents and children alike highlight as a cause of tension within the family group during playtime. A third of children (33%) felt rivalries with their brothers and sisters took the fun out of playtime, with girls feeling it more acutely than boys. Nearly a third (32%) of parents cited sibling rivalry as being the biggest problem they encounter when playing with their children as they struggle to know how best to deal with this.

A lack of clear advice and direction generally on how to engage children in effective play and deal with problems they encounter is a clear issue for parents. One in ten (10%) adults questioned admitted they felt so overwhelmed and confused by the conflicting information available that it actually prevents them from playing with their children.

Play is vital to a child’s development, improving the way they interact, communicate and develop key life skills. The ‘State of Play, Back to Basics’ report aims to help parents make play exactly what it should be for both generations: educational, inspirational and above all fun!

Professor Tanya Byron, author of the report said of the findings; “There are four key ingredients to a successful playtime between parents and children namely: education, inspiration, integration and communication. Parents need to take a step back and think back to how their own childhood games used these four pillars and how they can implement them now. The key thing is to have an open and honest dialogue between parents and children and to embrace play environments like Disneyland Paris which provide a great training ground for parents to practice the art of imaginative play by using objects and experiences that are recognisable whatever your age. Cross generational enjoyment, where no family member feels inhibited, under pressure, bored or stressed are key to making these four pillars become part of everyday play.”

Francois Banon, Vice President of Communications at Disneyland Paris said of the need for such a report; “Enhancing and inspiring the lives of people whatever their age is key to what we do every day. Our aim is that every person who visits the park is immersed and enriched by their experience. Toy Story Playland, our newest land, focuses on the popular Disney/ Pixar “Toy Story” films and puts the concept of ‘play’ at the heart of the experience.

“During the report, what became clear is that Disneyland Paris has the tools to help make playtime for families more enjoyable and enriching. Theme parks such as Disneyland Paris can offer a springboard for parents to learn and understand play and engage with their children in stimulating environments. As such we take our role as experts in play very seriously and everything we do, and aspire to do, is designed to help make play a rewarding experience for all.”

2010 Walt Disney World Resort Christmas Calendar of Events

2010 Walt Disney World Resort Christmas Calendar of Events

From a sparkling ice castle and symphony of dazzling lights … to legendary international customs and wondrous displays … to magical entertainment and musical delights, Walt Disney World Resort unwraps an enchanting celebration of the holiday season in 2010.

Electrifying fireworks, charming parades and all the sounds of the season help transform the 40-square-mile resort into a winter wonderland where holiday fun begins as early as Nov. 8.  Guests who believe “there’s no place like home for the holidays” can enjoy the merriment at Disney and still curl up in a cozy place at home for Christmas … while other guests can spend the holidays at Mickey’s place, since many seasonal happenings continue through Jan. 3, 2011.

Disney’s stocking full of cheer includes:

Magic Kingdom

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party
– On 19 magical nights between Nov. 8 and
Dec. 19, holiday revelers can sip cocoa, catch a “snowflake” on a fingertip and catch the spirit of the season through enchanting entertainment that includes live shows, fireworks, carolers and special character meet and greets.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, which kicks off at 7 p.m. on select evenings (after regular Magic Kingdom closing), is pure, time-honored Disney magic:

Dancing gingerbread, marching soldiers and Santa’s sleigh parade down Main Street, U.S.A. to seasonal melodies during the twice-nightly “Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade” … Cinderella Castle is draped radiantly with 200,000 glistening white lights … and “Holiday Wishes, Celebrate the Spirit of the Season” fireworks lights the night sky during a pyrotechnics show orchestrated to holiday melodies.

The night wouldn’t be complete without the forecasted flurry of snowflakes along Main Street, U.S.A. and a warming cup of cocoa in hand.  Party-goers also enjoy complimentary cookies and apple slices and enjoy unlimited admission to favorite attractions.

This after-hours family-friendly outing takes place Nov. 8, 11, 12, 16, 18, 19, 28, 30 and Dec. 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17 and 19.  The evening kicks off at 7 p.m. and continues until midnight.  Day-of-party ticket pricing is $59.95 ($53.95 for ages 3-9).  Advance tickets are available with $6 savings for most dates.  Guests can visit Disneyworld.com/christmasparty or call 407/W-DISNEY.

Castle Dream Lights – When daylight has passed during the holiday season, Magic Kingdom guests can behold a breathtaking transformation during the Castle Dream Lights ceremony.  Each evening Nov. 8, 2010, through Jan. 3, 2011, Cinderella and favorite characters decked out in holiday garb take to the stage and magically transform Cinderella Castle into an ice palace aglow with 200,000 white lights – a perfect centerpiece to a park all decked out with wreaths, bows, garland and towering Christmas trees.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Spectacle of Dancing Lights – Millions of brilliant bulbs blanket the backlot with dancing lights and animated displays synchronized to high-energy holiday tunes at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Nov. 8, 2010, through Jan. 3, 2011.

Colorful wreaths, twirling carousels, flying angels and Santa and his reindeer bedazzle park-goers amid swirling snow flurries during The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, a megawatt, multi-colored spectacle that Show Director John Phelan calls “the ultimate Americana Holiday lights display.”

“Imagine it,” Phelan said.  “One private citizen (Jennings Osborne), overwhelmed by the spirit of the season, created his own ‘Holiday Wonderland,’ complete with a giant rotating globe with ‘Peace on Earth’ above it and a massive canopy of red lights that people could walk under.  He said he wanted the people to feel like they were inside the lights, looking out.  Only in America!”

In fact, originally it was only in Little Rock, at the home of Arkansas businessman Jennings Osborne.  The rich tradition began some 20 years ago when he strung 1,000 lights as a Christmas gift to his daughter.  After the exhibit grew larger and brighter – into millions of lights – it was transported to Walt Disney World Resort in 1995, where the light display now delights guests from all over the world each year.

Epcot

Holidays Around the World Throughout World Showcase, storytellers share customs and lore from their heritage from Nov. 26-Dec. 30.  Strolling around the promenade during the Holidays Around the World celebration may put you face-to-face with the good-hearted witch La Befana, known in Italy for filling children’s shoes with treats, or the jolly gift-bearer Father Christmas in the United Kingdom.  There are meet and greets with Santa and Mrs. Claus in The American Adventure, plus other legendary icons who share messages of goodwill.  The celebrations of Kwanzaa and Hanukkah are showcased as well.

The evening is capped by the visual splendor of “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth,” the mesmerizing Epcot spectacular featuring fireworks, laser and water – all spruced up for the season with a spirited holiday finale.

Candlelight Processional – The poignant story of Christmas unfolds during this renowned event featuring celebrity narrators, a mass choir and 50-piece live orchestra at America Gardens Theatre.  On Nov. 26, Isabella Rossellini is scheduled to lead off the star-studded celebrity lineup that later in the season is scheduled to include Whoopi Goldberg and Jodi Benson among others (lineup of narrators is subject to change without notice).  To ensure a seat for this joyous favorite, Candlelight Dinner packages are available with dinner at select Epcot restaurants, a special spot for fireworks viewing and guaranteed seating for the heartfelt Candlelight Processional.  For bookings call 407/WDW-DINE.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade – The wild side of Animal Kingdom blends with a playful spirit of the holidays during “Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade.”  Mickey and pals present seasonal melodies with a world beat twist during a whimsical cavalcade throughout the park.  The high-energy afternoon parade runs daily from Nov. 26, 2010, through Jan. 3, 2011.

Santa Goofy’s Holiday Village is adorned with festive décor and perfectly trimmed Christmas trees and crooning carolers.  And Santa Goofy and spirited friends greet guests for photo opportunities.

Downtown Disney

Festival of the Seasons – Santa Claus is coming to town – to Downtown Disney, that is – and he’ll be meeting kids, listening to wishes and posing for pictures daily from Nov. 19 through Dec. 24 at Santa’s Chalet.

Santa is at the center of Festival of the Seasons, during which school choirs and bands often perform at the dock stage to help ring in the season … and shoppers can enjoy holiday gift buying every day.

With dozens of shops from boutiques to gigantic toy stores, there is something for every style and budget.  Tren-D has hip fashions and accessories, D Street offers all the latest Vinylmations, the World of Disney store showcases character, princess and pirate merchandise, and lots more.  And you could fill Santa’s sleigh with all the games and goodies at Once Upon a Toy.  There’s also Ghirardelli chocolates, Basin (soaps and bath products), LEGO Imagination Center and much more.

Beauty and the Beast (Three-Disc Diamond Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo in DVD Packaging)Well, There's The Usual Things: Flowers... Chocolates... Promises You Don't Intend To Keep...

Beauty and the Beast revolutionized how the world viewed animated films. Disney was on the cusp of its second Golden Age and had experienced success with The Little MermaidWell, There's The Usual Things: Flowers... Chocolates... Promises You Don't Intend To Keep..., The Rescuers Down UnderWell, There's The Usual Things: Flowers... Chocolates... Promises You Don't Intend To Keep... and Who Framed Roger RabbitWell, There's The Usual Things: Flowers... Chocolates... Promises You Don't Intend To Keep.... Beauty garnered such critical acclaim in its initial release that its creators were unequipped to handle it. Disney had shown the world that they still knew how to create magic!

I won’t talk about the film in this review (anyone reading this blog should have already seen it umpteen times), except to say that the Blu-ray presentation is magnificent. There is finally a medium, outside of the theater, that does the film justice.

This Blu-ray disc, alone, is worth getting a Blu-ray player and hi-def television. Sounds extravagant, yes, but nothing quite shines like animation on Blu-ray.

Well, There's The Usual Things: Flowers... Chocolates... Promises You Don't Intend To Keep...

Since I started collecting movies, I have followed the format wars and changes. We purchased a lot of VHS when the market opened up in the late 1980s. I bought all of the Disney movies on videocassette and anything else I wanted to watch from the comfort of my couch.

Then came dvd.

I dutifully re-purchased everything Disney released since the clarity and sound were vastly improved. There are not many films that I have purchased more than once; most Disney films I have bought twice. Beauty and the Beast is one of those rare films that I have owned on videotape, laserdisc and dvd. And now, I own it on Blu-ray. Each format change presented a major leap in technology for the visuals, so I was inclined to purchase it. Blu-ray adds so many layers to Beauty and the Beast, that I do not hesitate to recommend purchasing it again.

Blu-ray was made for animation; the colors are magnificent and the sound is outstanding. I noticed musical motifs and sounds in the film that I had never heard before.

One of the best things I can say about the film is that my entire family enjoyed it. My six year-old son has asked to watch it again. My eleven year-old laughed in all the right places (and maybe saw himself during his upcoming teenage years). My wife sang along and reminisced. I loved every minute of it and was equally thrilled that my family loved it, as well. I remembered the first time I saw it in the theater…

The bonus features are outstanding! I was shocked when I ran across four Laugh-O-Gram Cartoons in the massive documentary. Beyond Beauty, on the second Blu-ray disc, is one of the best documentaries that I have seen concerning the creation of an animated film. It is easily over two hours of material and has interviews with Disney Historians (a few that are featured in the Geek-End Updates) and animators.

Bonus Features include the following and more:

Disney names two execs to head digital business

Disney names two execs to head digital business

James Pitaro, an experienced Internet executive who just left his post at running the media properties at Yahoo Inc, will oversee Disney Online, the home of Disney branded web and social media sites.

As co-president of Disney Interactive Media Group, John Pleasants, the CEO of Playdom, the online game company recently bought by Disney for $763 million, will focus on online gaming and will continue to run Playdom.

In an interview, Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger said he believed the structural change at the top of the division was needed to “create a real business in this space.”

The two executives replace Steve Wadsworth, a 17-year veteran, who will step down and had in recent years brought together most of Disney’s Internet properties within Disney Interactive Media Group, which narrowed its loss slightly to $65 million in the most recently reported quarter.

“As co-presidents, I’m confident they will make Disney’s digital content and businesses even more robust and successful,” Iger said.

Pleasants will oversee Disney’s overall games strategy and its global network of game development studios, including recently acquired mobile publisher Tapulous. The games group will include such popular online virtual worlds as Club Penguin, purchased by Disney in 2007 for about $350 million, and World of Cars as well as console and mobile titles.

Prior to joining Playdom as CEO in June 2009, he was President of Global Publishing and Chief Operating Officer of Electronic Arts Inc.

Some analysts have cited concerns about the prices Disney has paid for these properties.

“The street is a little skeptical because Disney paid hefty multiples for Playdom and for Club Penguin and there’s not a lot of transparency. It’s a little hard to evaluate how well they’re doing but the street tends to give Disney the benefit of the doubt because they have the strongest track record in executing content creation and cross platform exploitation,” said David Bank, analyst with RBC.

During the interview, Iger said that the Club Penguin acquisition had exceeded the company’s acquisition targets and that its subscribers had risen to 1.7 million from 750,000 when it was acquired.
