Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise Closing this Summer for Refurbishment

Planning a visit to Magic Kingdom soon? We have a refurbishment update that may impact your itinerary. According to the latest Walt Disney World calendar update, the Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise will close for refurbishment later this summer. The closure is set to begin on August 26, 2024, and will continue through at least September 17, 2024, based on the current calendar which is only available currently through mid-September.

While no major show changes are expected during this closure, several permits have been filed, including one with Underwater Engineering Services, Inc. The Jungle Cruise’s show scenes were recently updated, but the ride itself hasn’t been closed for refurbishment since 2017. This maintenance period is likely focused on essential upkeep to ensure the ride continues to provide safe and enjoyable experiences for guests.

In addition to the Jungle Cruise, Big Thunder Mountain is also expected to close soon for refurbishment. This could leave the Magic Kingdom without two of its major high-capacity attractions in September. The dates for the Big Thunder Mountain closure have not yet been announced. Keep an eye on the Walt Disney World calendar for updates and plan your visit accordingly!

We have another Walt Disney World refurbishment alert to share with you. Gertie the Dinosaur, the beloved life-size sculpture at Echo Lake, is getting some much needed TLC. Recently, Gertie’s tail has been wrapped in tarps, likely for refurbishment.

Gertie’s tail sits partly on the beach of Echo Lake, giving the illusion that it’s sticking out of the water behind her body. When the tarps first appeared, parts of the tail were clearly removed. The tarps covered a support structure, but now the tail has been restored. The tarps remain, but the tail looks taller and smoother than before. The tarps are a similar color to Gertie, helping them blend in, but it’s possible the tail’s exterior hasn’t been repainted yet.

Gertie the Dinosaur’s history goes way beyond her 1989 debut at the park. Created by Winsor McCay in 1913, Gertie starred in a 12-minute hand-drawn film and became one of the first well-known animated cartoon stars. She amazed vaudeville audiences in 1914 when she was projected onto a screen, appearing life-sized alongside her creator. Today, she serves delicious treats at Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction, continuing to delight guests of all ages. Keep an eye out for more updates on Gertie’s tail as refurbishment continues!

Disney Cruise Line dropped some exciting news this morning! DCL has partnered with Oriental Land Co., Ltd. (OLC) to bring year-round Disney cruise vacations to Japan. This new venture is expected to start by early 2029, marking another milestone in Disney’s over 40-year relationship with OLC, which operates the beloved Tokyo Disney Resort.

A new Disney cruise ship, set to be registered and based in Japan, will be constructed at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. Designed with Japanese guests in mind, the ship will be approximately 140,000 gross tons, powered by liquefied natural gas, and will have about 1,250 staterooms. Walt Disney Imagineering is hard at work creating imaginative designs to ensure the ship offers the perfect mix of fun and relaxation.
