Don’t Miss Australia’s Critically-Acclaimed And Wildly Off-Beat Romantic Dance Comedy

On November 23, 2010 the most captivating, hilarious and exaggerated romantic comedy about the fantastical world of ballroom dancing and the fixated characters that live within it, STRICTLY BALLROOM, makes its highly-anticipated debut as an all-new Special Edition DVD.
Released by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and co-written/directed by award winning Baz Luhrmann (best known for The Red Curtain Trilogy, which includes his films Strictly Ballroom, William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge), STRICTLY BALLROOM is a wildly off-beat comedy about a male dancer (Paul Mercurio) who refuses to follow the accepted rules of ballroom dancing and creates his own style of choreography, which infuriates
the ballroom dancing establishment. Before he’s scheduled to compete in the Pan-Pacific ballroom championships, he’s forced to take up a new partner (Tara Morice), a beginner who initially seems without promise.
STRICTLY BALLROOM Special Edition DVD will retail in the US for the suggested retail price of $19.99 and include a four all-new, never-before released extended bonus features – a mini documentary and audio commentary featuring Baz Luhrmann and the journey of creating the film, interviews with real ballroom dancers and competitions and an insightful 3D gallery of images that explain the inspiration behind the film, costumes, characters, etc.
Strictly Ballroom.
STRICTLY BALLROOM was Luhrmann’s directorial debut film and was inspired by his own childhood experiences with ballroom dance classes and his mom’s career as a ballroom dance teacher. The movie itself was based on a 20-minute play that Mr. Luhrmann wrote in drama school.

“‘Strictly Ballroom’ has been an important part of my creative journey, drawing from my childhood experience in the world of ballroom dancing to the first production’s inception as a response to any form of oppression, clashed with the love of classic Hollywood storytelling,” said Luhrmann. “As this was my first film, and sold in many different territories in a variety of ways, we have spent a lot of time crafting the film in a home entertainment format that I feel is of the quality that fans deserve. “I think those who view ‘Strictly Ballroom’ for the first time will find that the back-stage story of creating my first motion picture somewhat parallels the story of the film itself. I can only hope, as in the film, that it is a win for the audience.”

When released theatrically in 1992, STRICTLY BALLROOM quickly emerged as an award winning audience favorite – it garnered at the Cannes Film Festival’s Prix de Jeunesse (“Award of the Youth – Foreign Film”) in 1992, The Toronto Film Festival’s “People’s Choice Award” in 1992, a Golden Globe nomination for “Best Picture – Comedy/Musical” (1994), 12 Australian film academy awards including best picture, and many, many more.
BONUS FEATURES:

  • An all-new mini documentary ‘Strictly Ballroom: From Stage To Screen’ created especially for the Special Edition DVD release, featuring Baz Luhrmann and his close collaborators discussing the extraordinary journey of creating the film
  • ‘Samba To Slow Fox’ – an exciting and insightful featurette, containing fascinating interviews with ballroom dancers and dance footage from various competitions
  • 3-D Gallery – an insightful series of mini featurettes with still images and Baz Luhrmann commentary that canvases inspiration for the costumes, story and much more
  • Film Audio Commentary with Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin and John O’Connell

Thanksgiving turkey no longer welcome in Disneyland

Thanksgiving turkey no longer welcome in Disneyland

The Thanksgiving turkey traditionally spared by the US president will no longer go to Disneyland, where it has been a star of the show in recent years, the theme park said Friday.

As the United States gears up for its annual feast next Thursday, a spokeswoman said the California resort had decided to end the custom of hosting the pardoned bird, which has been part of its Thanksgiving parade.

“Originally we brought the turkey here during the 50th anniversary of Disneyland, as maybe a one time thing, tying into our anniversary, and calling it the happiest turkey on earth,” said spokeswoman Donna Fisk.

That anniversary was in 2005. “We did it for five years, and the decision (to stop) was mostly based on bringing new and different programs to our guests,” she added.

The White House meanwhile said the spared turkey — to be pardoned by President Barack Obama in a Rose Garden ceremony next Wednesday — will go to a different home.

“After the pardoning, the turkeys will be driven to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens” outside Washington, said a White House statement, adding that the turkey would be on display over Christmas.

“After the holidays, the National Thanksgiving Turkey and its alternate will live in a custom-made enclosure at Mount Vernon’s nationally recognized livestock facility,” it said.

The origin of the bizarre White House ritual dates from when John F. Kennedy was presented with a Thanksgiving turkey with a message around its neck saying, “Good Eatin,’ Mr. President.”

Kennedy spared the bird, and while US leaders have approached the ritual differently, Obama pointed out last year that it was president George Bush 20 years ago who formalized the tradition.

Vibrant Waterfront District Among Plans for Downtown Disney

Vibrant Waterfront District Among Plans for Downtown Disney

Work will soon begin on a completely re-imagined Pleasure Island and other one-of-a-kind experiences as Walt Disney World Resort continues to bring new stories to life at Downtown Disney.  Combined, the projects are expected to create an estimated 1,200 new jobs over the next three years.

“We have made great progress since first announcing our vision to bring new shopping, dining and entertainment experiences to Downtown Disney, many of which can’t be found anywhere else and have already become guest favorites,” said Keith Bradford, vice president of Downtown Disney.  “We look forward to providing even more ways for our guests to enjoy Downtown Disney, while at the same time creating new jobs for Central Floridians.”

A nostalgic yet modern take on an early 20th century port city and amusement pier will evolve Pleasure Island into “Hyperion Wharf.”  By day, the bustling port district will draw guests in with its stylish boutiques and innovative restaurants and by night, thousands of lights will transform the area into an electric wonderland.

Taking its name from Hyperion, the Greek god of light, as well as the street on which Walt Disney built his first major animation studio, the wharf district also will feature a relaxing lakeside park and enhanced pedestrian walkways.  Its diverse eateries will expand dining availability at Downtown Disney by more than 25 percent.

“Hyperion Wharf will offer guests of all ages a vibrant atmosphere and new experiences that can be enjoyed by day or by night,” said Bradford.  “Whether looking for a great place to dine with the whole family or a place to relax and enjoy live music, Hyperion Wharf will provide the perfect setting for guests to make new memories with us.”

In addition to the new wharf district, numerous other projects are underway at Downtown Disney, including:

  • an extensive renovation of Lego Imagination Center, which will increase its overall footprint by nearly 3,500 square-feet and add new Lego exterior models featuring scenes from classic Disney movies;
  • enhancements at AMC that will take the movie-going experience at Downtown Disney to the next level with new digital technology, a paradigm-shifting Concession Stand of the Future and Florida’s first Fork & Screen Theater; and
  • numerous new or renovated retail shops and merchandise vignettes, as well as additional atmosphere entertainment, throughout Downtown Disney.

Combined, these projects are expected to create an estimated 600 construction jobs, 500 restaurant, retail and entertainment jobs and support 100 vendor and supplier jobs.

Other recent additions to Downtown Disney include:

  • new entertainment, such as the Characters in Flight tethered balloon ride, the ETX theater at AMC and an enhanced outdoor performance area;
  • unique shopping experiences like D Street, littlemissmatched, RIDEMAKERZ,

Tren-D and Disney’s Design-a-Tee; and

  • immersive dining, like T-Rex: A Prehistoric Family Adventure, Paradiso 37 and the recently opened Pollo Campero and Fresh A-Peel, a new quick-service restaurant combining authentic Latin-style chicken and side dishes, as well as fresh, healthy creations such as salads, wraps and gluten-free desserts.

Philanthropist T. Denny Sanford Makes $10 Million Gift to the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children

Philanthropist T. Denny Sanford Makes $10 Million Gift to the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children

In a special ceremony on a Florida Hospital rooftop, a sea of luminaries were released into the night sky to celebrate a significant gift to the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children. T. Denny Sanford, one of the nation’s leading philanthropists, generously made a $10 million donation to support Florida Hospital with its mission to create a state-of-the-art pediatric hospital and provide a brighter future for children’s health care.In honor of Sanford’s gift to the hospital, Florida Hospital’s medical office building for kids has been renamed the T. Denny Sanford Pediatric Center.

“We are so excited to have Mr. Sanford join our Florida Hospital family and help us on our mission to not only create a beautiful place for our children to heal but also a world-class facility to inspire wellness,” said Marla Silliman, administrator of Florida Hospital for Children. “This is such a special gift that demonstrates Mr. Sanford’s continued commitment to providing the best health care possible for children.”

The T. Denny Sanford Pediatric Center is located adjacent to the hospital at 615 E. Princeton St. and houses a wide variety of world-renowned pediatric specialists who provide care to patients at the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children.

“Children have no voice or way of telling their needs,” said T. Denny Sanford. “We must hear and feel what they need and provide it for them to provide for a better world for the future. I live by a personal mission to ‘aspire to inspire before you expire’ and I think we can all live by that philosophy in some way.”

Sanford’s gift to the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children is his second significant gift made to a medical facility in Central Florida. Throughout the years, Sanford has made numerous donations to better the health of children across the country including: $400 million to Sanford Health in South Dakota; $20 million to the Burnham Institute for Medical Research in LaJolla, Calif., for the creation of the Sanford Children’s Health Research Center; $15 million to the Mayo Clinic for a new pediatric outpatient facility and to create a collaboration between Sanford Children’s and the Mayo Clinic; $15 million to the Children’s Home Society, a South Dakota home for abused children. Most recently, Sanford donated $50 million to Burnham Institute for Medical Research in LaJolla, Calif. and Orlando which prompted a name change to the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute.

“It takes many people to make the exciting things that we do at Florida Hospital possible,” said Lars Houmann, president and CEO of Florida Hospital. “This includes physicians, nurses, staff, community members, board members and more. All of them have played a role in building this one-of-a-kind children’s hospital. Today, I am so excited to celebrate another addition to the Florida Hospital family.”

As Florida Hospital continues on its journey to become a medical destination for superior health care and biosciences, philanthropists like Sanford help make this journey possible.

“In order to remain on the cutting-edge of health care, Florida Hospital needs the philanthropic support of individuals such as Mr. Sanford,” said Des Cummings, president of the Florida Hospital Foundation. “His selflessness will enable Florida Hospital to continue to provide pre-eminent faith based health care for generations to come.”

ABC Family Set to Premiere the Half-Hour Animated Film The Gruffalo During 25 Days of Christmas

ABC Family Set to Premiere the Half-Hour Animated Film The Gruffalo During 25 Days of Christmas

The animated half-hour special, The Gruffalo, will make its US debut on ABC Family on Thursday, December 9, at 7:00PM ET/PT as part of the network’s annual “25 Days of Christmas” programming event. Based on Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s best selling children’s picture book, The Gruffalo features an all-star voice cast including Robbie Coltrane (Harry Potter film series) as the Gruffalo, Helena Bonham Carter (Alice in Wonderland) as the narrator, Rob Brydon (TV’s “Gavin & Stacey”) as the Snake, James Corden (TV’s “Gavin & Stacey”) as the Mouse, John Hurt (V for Vendetta) as the Owl, and Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton) as the Fox. Published in the US by Penguin Books®, The Gruffalo celebrated its tenth anniversary last year and has been translated into 40 different languages selling over 4 million copies worldwide.

The Gruffalo tells the magical tale of a mouse who takes a walk though the woods in search of a nut. Encountering three predators – all of whom wish to eat him – a fox, an owl and a snake – the plucky mouse has to use his wits to survive. He announces that he is meeting a monster with terrible features, a ‘Gruffalo’, and the three predators are each panicked into running away. The mouse is now increasingly confident that there is nothing that can touch him, or so he thinks. When he rounds a corner and comes face to face with the terrible creature of his imagination, the Gruffalo itself, the mouse has to dig deep to escape the danger and ultimately restore peace to the woods.

Produced by Magic Light Pictures, the 30-minute animation was completed in 2009 and premiered in the UK on BBC1 on Christmas Day receiving 10 million viewers and 42.6% share of the total audience; one of the highest rated programs of the year.

Axel Scheffler’s classic artwork is brought to life with a unique mixture of model and CGI animation. Michael Rose (Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run) and Martin Pope (The Heart of Me, Lawless Heart) have produced through Magic Light Pictures. The film is directed by Jakob Schuh and Max Lang and was animated at the award winning Studio Soi in Ludwigsburg, Germany. Sold and broadcast internationally, The Gruffalo was nominated for a BAFTA and has won numerous awards including the Prix Jeunesse and the Crystal for Best TV Special at Annecy Animation Festival.
