It’s official: ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America’ will be 3-D films

Tt’s official: The hammer of Thor and the shield of Captain America will fly straight at moviegoers in 3-D, which is really no surprise considering the current stereoscopic craze on the studios lots of Hollywood. What is unusual is the eagerness of each film’s director to take his case for 3-D directly to the fans at Comic-Con International.‬‪

On Saturday, July24 , Marvel Studios has the final studio presentation in the expo’s biggest room, Hall H, and “Thor” director Kenneth Branagh will use that climactic slot not just to introduce some of his cast — a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins, but its unlikely that all three will be in San Diego — but also to persuade skeptical fans that 3-D will add new dimensions to the 2011 blockbuster, and not just in the obvious way.

Ratatouille and Other Pixar Movies Prepping for 3D Re-Release?

Ratatouille and Other Pixar Movies Prepping for 3D Re-Release?

Interesting article from /Film talking about a few Disney Movie Re-Releases in 3D.

Pixar has already returned to the money-regurgitating well twice now with 3D re-releases of Toy Story and Toy Story 2, which returned to theaters simultaneously last year. Now it appears as though other entries from Pixar’s library may be getting a similar treatment, according to a recent interview with the studio’s stereoscopic (3D) imaging supervisor, Bob Whitehill.

Ratatouille is the current contender being taken into consideration, and apparently director Brad Bird is open to the process.

Ratatouille is one that we’re exploring doing [3D conversion on] and Brad Bird is very open to some changes, you know, some very subtle changes but slight reframings. If a character’s reaching forward and a pinky goes off screen, we’ll adjust the camera and the character a little bit to have the hand on. So that said, if the director’s open to minor modifications on a library title then that’s wonderful and we’re really excited about doing that.

Tron Legacy Gets Some Help from Pixar & John Lasseter

Tron Legacy Gets Some Help from Pixar & John Lasseter

A very interesting article from Entertainment Weekly talking about Joe Kosinski’s bringing in John Lasseter and Friends from Pixar to check out and add some more magic to the film.

Joe Kosinski’s Tron: Legacy is getting a little help from above. EW.com has learned that the CG-extravaganza due out at the end of the year received some key input from some very brilliant filmmakers, mainly the elite brain trust at Pixar in Northern California.

In late March, the Tron filmmakers chose to show a very early working cut of the film starring Garrett Hedlund and Jeff Bridges to Pixar’s John Lasseter, Ed Catmull, The Incredibles director Brad Bird, Toy Story 3 screenwriter Michael Arndt, and others. The one-day exercise was done in advance of some planned re-shoots scheduled for June with the intent of beefing up the very things that Pixar is so good at: character, emotion, and theme.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Movie Review

The Sorcerer's Apprentice Movie Review

This review comes to us from the NY Times.

“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is the latest movie about an ordinary fellow — it’s almost always a fellow — who is, all of a sudden and to his great astonishment, dragged into an epochal, supernatural battle between good and evil. The fellow in question this time is the distinctly unpromising Jay Baruchel, a gangly Canadian ectomorph who got the girl (though not much of an audience) in “She’s Out of My League” and who trained the cartoon dragon in “How to Train Your Dragon.” Here he plays an N.Y.U. physics major named Dave who tinkers with a giant Tesla coil in his subterranean laboratory and pines for Becky (Teresa Palmer), a pretty music lover who was his childhood crush.

Meanwhile, though, Dave has learned that he is the Prime Merlinian, which means that “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is not just another dweeb/cutie romantic comedy, but also a phantasmagorical action picture in which bolts of lightning will shoot out of people’s hands, and ancient spells will be uttered to cataclysmic effect right on the streets of Manhattan. To spare you the full rehash: hundreds of years ago a bunch of bad wizards were stuffed into a Russian doll, including the really mean Morgana (Alice Krige) and the gorgeous Veronica (Monica Bellucci). Now two supermagicians, Balthazar Blake and Maxim Horvath, battle to let one of the ladies out of the doll — called the Grimhold, by the way — and keep the other one trapped inside.

Yesterland takes us back to the sights, sounds, and smells of the Orange Stinger

Yesterland takes us back to the sights, sounds, and smells of the Orange Stinger

Yesterland has to be one of my favorite websites. I love all the thought, imagination and details that go into their articles. This week Werner takes us back into the history of the Orange Stinger at Disney California Adventure Park and then jumps forward to talk about it’s replacement Silly Symphony Swings.

Here is an excerpt.

There’s something here for four of your five senses. See glimpses of Paradise Pier from the open areas in the orange peel. Hear the sound of bees buzzing (or the sound of screams drowning out the buzzing). Smell the scent of oranges. Feel the wave action of the tilting canopy and the centrifugal force that makes your seat swing out to the side. (The fifth sense is taste, but food and beverages are not allowed on the ride.)
