A Maximum Attraction Minimum Wait Time Magic Kingdom Day

A Maximum Attraction Minimum Wait Time Magic Kingdom Day

Maximizing attraction time while minimizing wait time at the Magic Kingdom is almost like setting up the Perfect Storm. If you do certain things and do not do other things you may be surprised at the result.

First, the do not’s:

  1. In general, do not go to the Magic Kingdom (MK) on weekend days. Most visitors arrive at Walt Disney World on Friday or Saturday sometime late in the day. This makes Saturday or Sunday their first full day in the parks and most people head to the MK on their first full day to kick off the magic. Also remember that the local residents also visit on weekends.
  2. Unless you are a huge fan of evening Extra Magic Hours (EMH) do not go to the MK on a day they are having them. It is far better to go to the MK the day after an evening EMH day, the crowds will be smaller.
  3. After you get to the end of Main Street USA do not follow the crowd as they head to the right for Space Mountain, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of Tomorrowland. Left to Adventureland is better.

Now for the do’s:

  1. Do go early. Be there at rope drop even if you go when there is an A.M. EMH. Earlier is always better because when people vacation they like to sleep in a little bit and have a leisurely breakfast. You will be amazed at how much you can accomplish while the masses are finishing their morning coffee.
  2. Do go left. Resist the temptation to head for Space Mountain. Instead head for the Jungle Cruise. In my experience you can hit the Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, Splash Mountain, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in less than 90 minutes. Walk Ons are always worth it!!
  3. From this point on, there are going to be a few more people around but if you head for the Haunted Mansion directly after Big Thunder you should only have a short wait.
  4. After you leave the Haunted Mansion you can pretty much pick up some of the less popular attractions or head towards Fantasyland. One thing you will notice is that as you are heading into Fantasyland the majority of folks are headed in the opposite direction to stand in line for the attractions you walked on earlier. You will also notice that as you head into Tomorrowland the crowds are not quite so bad. You may not walk on but your waits will be shorter.

Of course these ideas are not 100% but in general they have worked very well for us over the years. I have said in the past that I don’t use formal touring plans but I guess if you look closely, this is a touring plan that takes into accoumt more than where to go in the Magic Kingdom but also when to visit the park. Good Luck, and as always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Disney “Characters” Taking Over Twitter

Disney "Characters" Taking Over Twitter

Recently I’ve become a total Twitter monster. I can’t stop tweeting, and I can’t stop reading other people’s tweets. It’s fun to see what strangers are thinking! (Such as the “What the…?” tweets floating around about the World Cup being hosted in Qatar for 2022.)

Not all of the profiles on Twitter are random strangers or business trying to gain more followers as well as inform the public about their company’s latest news. Some Disney fans have created Twitter profiles to represent figures in the park, or to spread around some Disney love with trivia and quotes. Be sure to follow these profiles.

@Disney_Tweets

A few times a day, @Disney_Tweets posts little bits of Disney trivia and quotes from Walt Disney.

@MurphyTracker and @MurphyTDragon

While there may be two profiles representing our favorite Fantasmic! dragon, each is different. It’s like having both sides of Murphy’s brain on Twitter.

@HaroldSnowman

The beloved yeti from the Matterhorn won’t eat you; instead he’s taking time to tweet about your hat that just flew off.

@disneywords

They tweet quotes from Disney movies and tv shows. I love retweeting some of these.

@nemoseagulls

It’s exactly what it sounds like — the seagulls from the buoy where the Finding Nemo attraction is. Mine! Mine!

@TheTomMorrow

You can follow your favorite Innoventions host!

@PirateRedHead

Yep, it’s true. You can read what the most wanted wench from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride has to say. (She says lots about @HaroldSnowman.)

There are lots more profiles like these out there, you’ve just got to find them! (A lot of them follow each other, so it’s really not THAT difficult to find them.)

Also, remember that Chip and Co. has a Twitter! You can follow us at @chipandcompany.

Date Night Disney: The search for the perfect Date Restaurant

Date Night Disney: The search for the perfect Date Restaurant

My sister-in-law Nancy and I are collaborating on a project.  In June, we’ll be taking our families to Disney’s Bay Lake Tower resort for a family vacation – as documented in “Planning the Multi-Generational Family Vacation”.  Since we have nine people in our reservation party, part of the conspiring that Nancy and I are doing is to take our spouses out for an adult dinner – sans children.

We do have some prerequisites that we need to take in consideration.  For starters, neither one of us want to take our spouses to a place that the kids would love, and leave us thinking all night about what fun they would be having.  Second, both of us want to enjoy dinner, as well as some after dinner entertainment.  The entertainment doesn’t have to be a show, necessarily, nor does it even have to cost us anything, we just want to do something else after we eat.  And third, we want to choose a location that we will remember for a long time, because it will likely be a while before this opportunity presents itself again!

Nancy and I have been looking at many restaurants around the Disney World complex, everything from Le Cellier in Canada’s Pavilion, to Boma at Animal Kingdom Lodge, even The Wave at the Contemporary Resort and Coral Reef over at The Seas at Epcot.  I have never eaten at any of these restaurants, so I don’t have any idea how good the food is.  In our discussion, we appear to have narrowed it down to two choices, Boma and Le Cellier.

We have heard that Boma, with it’s location at Animal Kingdom Lodge, allows the visitors if they plan it correctly to view animal feedings, and to see the sunset from the terrace.  Is this true?  I have never been to Animal Kingdom Lodge before.

Additionally, I was thinking that if we ate at Le Cellier, we could then go through the International Gateway and walk or taxi over to the Boardwalk for some after dinner entertainment.

In the end, we haven’t come to the decision yet on where to take our spouses to dinner, but one thing that we have agreed on is this:  No matter where we take them, we are certain that we will all have a wonderful time together, and the food – no matter what the cuisine – will taste fabulous.

Do any of you have suggestions as to where you would go, or if you like, feel free to post your own stories on the forums about memorable dining experiences you have had at Walt Disney World!

Town That Walt Disney Built Has 1st Killing Since Start

Town That Walt Disney Built Has 1st Killing Since Start

Celebration, Disney’s master-planned, picture-perfect central Florida community, has never reported a homicide in its 14-year existence — until this week.

Residents of the town five miles south of Walt Disney World woke up Tuesday to the sight of yellow crime-scene tape wrapped around a condo near the Christmas-decorated downtown, where Bing Crosby croons from speakers hidden in the foliage. A 58-year-old neighbor who lived alone with his Chihuahua had been slain over the long Thanksgiving weekend, Osceola County sheriff’s deputies said.

The community’s famous friendliness is what brought investigators to Matteo Giovanditto’s body: Neighbors hadn’t seen him for days, so they filed a missing person’s report, then went into his condo a day later and found him.

A few years ago, a resident joked with a reporter that Celebration would feel like a real town when a bike was stolen. Now, it has an unsolved killing on its hands.

With 11,000 residents, Celebration is something of an anomaly in Central Florida. There’s no suburban sprawl — the entire place is reminiscent of a quaint New England village.

It’s the kind of town where people give Christmas gifts to their favorite Starbucks barista, where welcoming wooden rocking chairs sit lakeside on a sidewalk without being stolen, where neighbors tend to get suspicious if they notice you’re not around.

And that’s what happened with Giovanditto, detectives say.

Neighbors hadn’t seen Giovanditto, who owned a bottom-floor condo at a building called The Idlewyld, since the day before Thanksgiving. His black Corvette was also missing. A neighbor was supposed to walk Giovanditto’s dog, Lucy, over the weekend, but he wasn’t responding to her calls.

A missing person’s report was filed Sunday, and the next day neighbors went into his apartment and found his body. Investigators won’t say what type of scene they encountered, or how Giovanditto died.

“This is very rare and unusual for a crime of this magnitude to occur in this community,” said Twis Lizasuain, a sheriff’s spokeswoman.

On Tuesday, detectives poked a Crimestoppers sign offering a reward into the lush grass outside the condo, next to a receptacle for dog waste bags. They found the Corvette at an apartment building in a neighboring Orlando suburb. His relatives were notified of his death.

As word of the homicide blew around town like the leaves from the maple trees that line the sidewalks, people started to worry.

“I’ve always thought of Celebration as a very safe community,” said Heather Hardy, who lives there six months a year and was sitting on a wooden rocker downtown, reading a book.

Officials were quick to soothe people who live here: Even with the killer still at large, there was no need to worry; no, not here. Giovanditto’s death was an isolated incident, Lizasuain said.

“We don’t believe the safety of the residents is in jeopardy,” she said.

Few neighbors would talk about Giovanditto, who moved to Florida from Massachusetts. The Orlando Sentinel reported that he had once been a teacher; one neighbor thought he was retired.

The killing sullies the type of perfection envisioned in 1989 when Peter Rummell, then-president of the Disney Development Corp., wrote to then-Disney CEO Michael Eisner about building a new town on vacant, Disney-owned land in Osceola County.

The community would be a “wonderful residential town east of I-4 that has a human scale with sidewalks and bicycles and parks and the kind of architecture that is sophisticated and timeless. It will have fiber optics and smart houses, but the feel will in many cases be closer to Main Street than to Future World,” Rummell wrote in the letter.

Houses incorporated “New Urbanism” ideas such as placing the garage out of sight in the back and a front porch close to the sidewalk to encourage neighbor interaction. Restrictions on home color and architectural details also were in the community’s rulebook. Colonial, Victorian, and Arts and Crafts-style homes grace the streets; the downtown is a mix of postmodern buildings and stucco condos.

Residents arrived in 1996. Critics viewed it as something out of “The Truman Show,” or “The Stepford Wives.”

Fans saw other things. A return to small-town values. A walkable community. Safety.

Disney relinquished control of Celebration several years ago; the town is now maintained like any other in Osceola County. But it still retains theme park-like flourishes: a colorful kiosk sells tickets to a little train that ferries children and adults around town, tourists in Disney sweat shirts roam the streets, taking photos and, on a recent sunny day, Crosby’s “White Christmas” could be heard playing all over downtown.

This bucolic landscape makes it all the more difficult to believe that there actually was a homicide here, just steps from Celebration’s downtown, where people stroll with their tiny dogs and pause to enjoy a small, glittering man-made lake.

Over the years there has been crime in Celebration, but always much less than in neighboring communities.

And the town has not been immune to the effects of the Great Recession. Last year, the Washington Post wrote a story about the town’s dropping real estate values; homes are now available for under $300,000, and condos for $120,000, unheard-of prices just a few years ago.

In the summer, Celebration residents lamented the fact that the Veterans Memorial was marred with painted black graffiti.

On Wednesday, the town’s K-8 school was on lockdown, because a woman going through a divorce told officers that her husband might have been driving around with a gun.

And now this, the first homicide in Celebration, the town that Disney built.

Disney Shares Holiday Cheer Year-round at Coalition for the Homeless

Disney Shares Holiday Cheer Year-round at Coalition for the Homeless

Did you know Disney VoluntEARS prepare and serve nearly 750 meals a month at Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida? It’s a tradition that spans at least a decade and one of many ways that Disney lends a helping hand at the Coalition, which provides food and shelter to approximately 650 people a night. Many of them are families with children.

Walt Disney World Resort takes care of dinner service twice monthly at the Coalition. When a holiday falls on the schedule, Disney chefs find great delight in making the meals even more magical.

Chef Leonard Thomson, Chef de Cuisine with Epcot Catering, recently oversaw the Coalition’s Thanksgiving dinner preparations, which began two days prior to the holiday. Creating a feast for approximately 700 people, Chef Thomson and team made a culinary cornucopia that included roasted turkey with gravy, cornbread stuffing, cranberry sauce, braised beef tips, four-cheese baked pasta, steamed vegetables, mashed potatoes, salad greens, rolls and desserts such as pumpkin cheesecake.

“When Disney chefs are onsite for their regular meal service, the delicious aroma is unmistakable,” says Muffet Robinson, director of communications for Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. “Our staff and clients are so very grateful for the support of Walt Disney World.”

Coalition for the Homeless is more than a shelter; it is a comprehensive program designed to help homeless individuals and families get back on track to self-sufficiency. They offer numerous support services including job skills training, licensed day care, children’s programs and housing placement.

For the past few years, Coalition for the Homeless has been recognized as one of the top Disney’s Helping Kids Shine grant recipients. As part of this recognition, the Coalition continues to receive funding and ongoing comprehensive support from Disney, which includes board service, assistance in the maintenance and improvement of Coalition facilities, meals prepared by Disney chefs and donations of warm clothing in the winter.

“We sincerely value Disney’s generosity and commitment to making a difference in the lives of homeless individuals and families,” says Coalition for the Homeless President/CEO Brent Trotter. “Thanks to community partners, such as Walt Disney World Resort, we can extend our reach to help those who need it most.”

Join the Disney DiscussionI have been working like crazy the past couple of days to get a new feature up and running on the Chip and Company website. One of the biggest questions from my writers are how can we make the website feel more like a community?

So Jeff my server guy and I bounced around a few ideas and scoured the interwebs looking for inspiration. While most bloggers LOVE the Disqus comment system it is kinda lacking in the community feel. Most comments get posted but does not really engage you the viewers..

I love the idea of a Forum but I really dislike the idea of having a separate identity or a totally separate page to have to visit.  So Jeff and I worked on a way to make the Chip and Company site and Disney Forum intermingle with each other.

After 2 grueling days of non stop work I present to you the first ever Chip and Company Disney News & Views Discussion Board! I was able to take the best of the Chip and Company Website and the Best of a Forum and combine them together to make this very cool feature.

Here are some of the really cool things you can do on the Chip and Company Disney News & Views Discussion Board:

  • Now while you are checking out the articles on the website you can click the link at the bottom of each article where you can join the Disney Discussion.
  • Earn ranks while you comment and try to Rule the Roost of our Discussion Board.
  • Meet and Hang out with our writers. Ask them questions, learn more about them, and find out tips and tricks to the parks that they haven’t shared in an article yet.
  • Share other Disney articles from around the net or send some traffic to your Disney Blog
  • Login using your Facebook/Google/AOL/Open ID accounts so signing up is easy!
  • I uploaded some very cool and unique avatars for your profile that you might want to check out. or you can use your own.

While some of these features are very cutting edge others are there to help all of us come together as a community and discuss our greatest passion DISNEY!

You can get there by visiting the homepage and clicking on Join the Discussion at the top of the page, click on the link inside the article your reading, and finally you can just visit http://www.chipandco.com/forum/chip-and-company/

So check it out! Signup and let us know what you think. Post some comments and see if you can get your rank up. I hope to see you there!

Disney Announces Performers for the 2010 Christmas Day Parade.

Disney Announces Performers for the 2010 Christmas Day Parade.

We’re getting some information on a just a few of the singers who will be performing in this years Christmas day parade which begins taping now through this Sunday. So far we know that Maria Carey will be taping a performance on Friday, but we don’t know if it will be in the Magic Kingdom or in one of the resorts.  We  also heard today that Disney channel star Debbie Ryan, best known for her role on The Suite Life on Deck and The Search for Santa Paws, will be performing in the Magic Kingdom.   Other performers include American Idol winner Lee Dwyze and ten-year old America’s Got Talent contestant Jackie Evancho.  In past years, these performances have been on Friday, but with all the changes this year, we can’t guarantee anything. Remember too, that Sunday is a make-up day, so you may be able to catch some performances that day. So far the weather looks cool and beautiful with very little chance of rain.

Now for the fun gossip. We’ve been hearing rumors that Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift will perform, but there’s been no confirmation so far. The fact that both performers have breaks in their schedule at this time has only fueled the speculation.  The Jonas Brothers have long been a fixture at parade tapings however, so the chances are good that they’ll be there.

We do have confirmation that Ryan Seacrest will be hosting in the Magic Kingdom, replacing long-time host Regis Philbin.  As soon as we get anymore concrete news, we’ll put it out right away.

The parade will air on ABC on Christmas day at 9:00 a.m. (EST) and 3:00 p.m. (EST).
