Disney Cruise Line Entertainment: Ardan James

Disney Cruise Line Entertainment: Ardan James

Not since the mouse himself began entertaining over 83 years ago has as entertainer with as sweet a spirit captivated an audience as Ardan James. His guest appearance on a February sailing of the Disney Wonder will make you hope he becomes a permanent fixture. His truly one of a kind skills go beyond an “act” and thrill you from the very first moment he arrives on stage. He arrives without fanfare, glitz or pre-conceived notions of your general entertainer. From the moment he is carried, yes carried, onto stage you are enamored with his presence, not knowing what to expect. He looks more like a statue stollen from Madam Tussauds than a man who for the next block of time will transport you into a world beyond your imagination.

“Light as a feather stiff as a board” comes to mind when Ardan arrives on stage, via two human couriers that are transporting him horizontally. He seems stiff as a board and your mind can’t comprehend what’s taking place. His robotic opening act makes you further question if he is indeed a man. The only inkling is his spirit which radiates as light as a feather as he segways into the second portion of his performance. You feel as though you are walking on a cloud or experiencing someone else’s dream as his physical comedy portrays an invisible tug of war, levitation from a single balloon and the simple gestures of a tender heart. As he takes a guest on stage to exhibit his newfound love, it’s as though the hand thats reaching for her is also reaching into your heart and making it smile.

A truly unique act that words cannot adequately describe, a mix of physical comedy, classic magician tricks and true original performance; Ardan James himself doesn’t even need words, as he can do an entire act without saying a word, but can indeed speak- as witnessed in his longer performances. His black tuxedo, formal as it may be, restrains neither the man nor his act. A single look at him would never lead you to believe he’s as light on his feet as Fred Astaire, or as endearing as Mickey mouse himself; but he is indeed both.

The performance itself; a mixture of visual and physical illusion, dancing and comedy are nothing less than captivating. His show is a true delight from start to finish and enraptures the hearts of both adults and children. His silence draws you in, his uniqueness keeps you intrigued and his sweetness makes you want to know the man who is this performer. Few as his words may be on stage they are nothing short of sincere as he graciously thanks the sound staff, by name, for assisting with his show.

Unlike other performers, when his act is done you don’t feel that its over, the things you have seen stay with you a long after the curtain is drawn, trapping you in his magical world of delight and illusion. Ardan James brings Disney quality performance to the next dimension and sets a new standard in the world of entertainment. His precision, lightness of foot and sweetness of heart make him as endearing as the mouse himself, I can only hope his success is as great!

Visit his website at: www.ardanjames.com
*If you live in the LA area, you can see Ardan’s performance for yourself at the Magic Castle where he will be from February 28th through March 6th.

Walt Disney World to add FastPass option for FastPass machines

Walt Disney World to add FastPass option for FastPass machines

Just days after revealing a new FastPass option for Mickey Mouse meet-and-greets at the Magic Kingdom, Chip and Co. has the scoop on a yet-to-be announced addition to Disney’s popular FastPass (FP) service.

No longer will guests have to wait in the long lines to get a FastPass to their favorite attractions. To help reduce the long lines guests may face waiting to get a FP ticket, Walt Disney World will offer a Fast Pass option for obtaining a Fast Pass. You heard it here first – soon you will be able to stand in a line to get a Fast Pass for a Fast Pass!

When asked about the program, a Disney Cast Member, who will remain Anonymouse said, “I’ve never heard of it, wait who are you again?”

Although Disney has yet to confirm its existence, Chip and Co. has heard the Fast Pass service will be called the “FastPass for FastPass,” or “FP 4 FP” – because abbreviations with numbers always sound more cutting edge and cooler.

These “FP 4 FP” tickets provide a one-hour window when guests can return and stand in another special Fast Pass line to score their actual FP ticket. Once that regular FP window opens, guests can finally enter the FP line to the attraction.

Disney anticipates that “FP 4 FP” will help manage lines and prove popular with guests for whom waiting in line is an essential part of the Disney magic. By offering “FP 4 FP,” guests will be able to spend more time in different lines, thus adding variety to a Walt Disney World vacation.

“FP 4 FP” will also allow guests to spend more time enjoying other Magic Kingdom experiences – such as souvenir shopping and eating Mickey ice cream bars – instead of the attractions themselves.

Chip and Co. asked some Disney fans what they thought of “FP 4 FP.”

Disney blogger Dana Howze, who logs long internet hours, said, “Sounds cool – but when can I get online FastPasses?”

Disney runner Jennifer Dreispul Lissak had other concerns. “What I really want to know is how do I get a FastPass for the corrals at the Walt Disney World marathon?

Some random guy named Chip had this to say, “42, wait what we talking bout”?

No firm date has been set for the implementation of “FP 4 FP,” but Chip and Company expects it to be some time soon after the Wizarding World of Harry Potter relocates to the new Fantasyland expansion.

Chip and Co. would be interested in hearing in what you think of  “FP 4 FP.” Or what you think about the FastPass for meeting Mickey Mouse Disney has actually announced or Tom Staggs’ announcement about Disney’s long-term plans to allow guests to reserve ride times at home.

Remember, with a Chip and Co. Scoop – you heard it here first. (And maybe only here.)

Disney’s Innovative Technology for Visually Impaired Guests Earns National Award

Disney’s Innovative Technology for Visually Impaired Guests Earns National Award

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts first-of-its-kind technology developed for visitors with disabilities has received another national accolade. The Assistive Handheld Technology Device for visually and hearing impaired guests earned the American Foundation for the Blind’s prestigious Access Award.

The nonprofit organization’s Access Award honors companies that foster equality by designing their services for all people. The foundation credited Disney’s Assistive Handheld Technology Device with creating “unprecedented freedom” for guests with disabilities.

“Too often, swift advances in technology bring the rewards of convenience and entertainment to an eager world while inadvertently leaving those who are visually impaired behind,” said Carl R. Augusto, AFB president and CEO. “Each of this year’s Access Award winners displayed a real commitment to making sure their products and services are equally accessible to everyone. And with the growing number of people with vision loss, focusing on accessibility is not only the right thing to do, it’s also a savvy business decision.”

Initially debuted by Disney engineers in 2001, the Assistive Handheld Technology Device recently added ground-breaking, Disney-patented* technology that expands guests’ accessibility through audio and visual descriptions at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. The 7.2-ounce device displays vivid audio narratives and descriptions of popular rides, attractions, and scenery. Utilizing wireless technology, an interactive menu allows users to access diverse information including architectural elements or the location of the closest restroom, and takes pre-programmed actions to fully immerse guests in the Disney experience.

“Working with our own team of experts and industry leaders, we continuously researched and tested new ways to achieve rich visual and audio descriptions for moving rides and outdoor scenery,” said Greg Hale, chief safety officer and vice president of Worldwide Safety and Accessibility for Walt Disney Parks & Resorts. “The unprecedented technology we introduced last year exemplifies Disney’s long legacy of commitment to innovation and heightens accessibility for guests with disabilities.”

The ingenuity behind the Assistive Handheld Technology Device has been well-received by guests with visual impairments such as Robyn Walker. “I commend Disney for doing this, I travel extensively and I spend a lot of time looking for things like restaurants and restrooms. This device helped me find things quickly, I am very impressed,” she said.

The Access Award is the most recent honor bestowed the Assistive Handheld Technology Device. Last year, the technology earned the National Society of Professional Engineers 2010 “New Product Award.”

“We appreciate the recognition received for Disney’s Assistive Handheld Technology Device, but our greatest reward is continually improving the quality of the Disney experience for guests with special needs,” said Hale. “Guests’ and industry groups’ encouraging response to the device inspires us to spread our technology so it can be emulated beyond our parks.”

Through patents and licensing, Disney’s technology has helped expand accessibility for a wide variety of retail, commercial and industrial applications. Locations already employing the technology include the World of Coca Cola Museum, The Hall at Patriot Place and Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

Quick Eats – Grilled Salmon from Sunshine Seasons

Quick Eats - Grilled Salmon from Sunshine Seasons

Sunshine Seasons is a quick service restaurant located at Epcot, in The Land Pavilion. It’s located downstairs near Soarin’ and Living with the Land attractions. The food court offers a variety of food stations to choose from – Soups and Salads, Sandwiches, The Grill, Asian and Grab n’ Go.

I decided to stop by The Grill and try the Sustainable Fish which was Grilled Salmon ($9.99). The grilled salmon was topped with kalamata olive pesto sauce and served with green beans and roasted red russet potatoes. For a quick service entree I was surprised by how good this dish was. The salmon was cooked just right, very moist and had a lot of flavor. The green beans with roasted pine nuts complimented the dish nicely. Since it was September and still very hot I found this to be an excellent item for a light, refreshing lunch. It’s not heavy, so you don’t feel full when going back out into the exhausting heat. The dish is a good size so my husband, Aljon and I decided to share this and grab some snacks later. It was just right for a very early lunch! If you are at Sunshine Seasons and looking for something that is less than your standard quick service fare that is tasty, give the salmon a try.

TIP: Before grabbing a bite to eat for lunch at Sunshine Seasons pick up a FastPass for Soarin’. If it’s early in the day, chances are good that by the time you are finished eating it will be time to ride Soarin’, and if not well then you have enough time to take a boat ride on Living with the Land.

Wednesday with Walt: And the Oscar Goes To…

Wednesday with Walt: And the Oscar Goes To…

Seventy-two years ago today, Walt Disney received a special Academy Award for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. On February 23, 1939, a precious little girl named Shirley Temple presented Walt with the award consisting of one full-size Oscar and seven smaller Oscars on a specially-built wooden pedestal. The Academy recognized Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as a significant screen innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment.

This weekend, I watched that endearing film in 3D on my new 3D television. I was thinking to myself that, although he obviously didn’t create the film in 3D, he did use Technicolor for the first time to create a full-length color, talking animated movie. I am always in awe of the creative genius of Walt Disney. He could see things so clearly – things that were not even there yet.

Walt had a vision of what he wanted to create and there was no stopping him. He was so sure of his idea that he even paid to send all of his animators back to art school so they could learn to draw the life-like characters. Against everyone’s advice, including his brother, Roy, and his wife, Lillian, Walt bet everything on his dream of this full-length feature film. He even had to mortgage his home in order to get more financing. Production ended up costing 1.5 million dollars, and that was back in the 1930s. After the December, 1937 premier of Snow White, all the “Hollywood brass” stood up and gave the film a standing ovation. It was then released to the general public on February 4, 1938 and, as we all know, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the most successful film of 1938!

Walt Disney has received more Oscar nominations than anyone else; receiving a total of 64 nominations during his career, the last of which he won in 1969 (3 years after his death). He still holds the record for Most Oscar Nominations in the Guinness Book of World Records.

After Shirley Temple presented the award, she said, “Isn’t it bright and shiny? Aren’t you proud of it Mr. Disney?”  Walt replied, “I’m so proud I think I’ll bust.” We are all very proud of his accomplishments and we are also thankful to him for all the joy he has brought to us and to our families. Congratulations once again, Mr. Disney!
