Disney Dream’s Spectacles Take Cruise Ship Family Entertainment to New Heights

Disney Dream’s Spectacles Take Cruise Ship Family Entertainment to New Heights

Talk about elevating cruise ship entertainment to new heights: A little mermaid soars over the stage in a stunning aerial ballet … Pirates rappel from atop the ship’s funnel during a swashbuckling adventure … The evening sky lights up with a dazzling spectacle of sound and color.

When the Disney Dream sets sail in January 2011, Disney Cruise Line is more than just raising the bar with entertainment designed to charm and bedazzle the entire family. Guests will delight to some of the most elaborate original musicals presented at sea, over-the-top deck parties and, bursting above it all, the largest fireworks spectacular aboard a cruise ship.

It’s Show Time!
Every night is show time at Walt Disney Theatre, an elegant, 1,340-seat entertainment palace that is at once classic and ultra-modern. Spanning three decks with orchestra and balcony seating, the theater is resplendent with art deco styling recalling luxurious show places of a bygone time. At the same time, it is equipped with theatrical technology that makes it one of the most advanced venues on land or sea, allowing producers to bring original productions and Disney stories to life in a whole new way.

The lineup of musicals presented at Walt Disney Theatre includes:

“Disney’s Believe”
Headlining the musical repertoire is “Disney’s Believe,” an original stage spectacular premiering aboard the Disney Dream. Combining a heartfelt story with a captivating musical score, the lavish production tells the story of a workaholic father who, through the power of Disney magic, reconnects with his daughter and learns a valuable lesson about what is important in life.

“Disney’s Believe” takes guests to the garden of Dr. Cornelius Greenaway, a brilliant botanist obsessed with cultivating his precious plants. Dr. Greenaway is so preoccupied with his garden that he overlooks the birthday of his daughter, Sophia. Saddened, Sophia makes a special birthday wish and the impossible happens: Genie from Disney’s “Aladdin” appears to make her wish come true.

Joined by a host of other characters, Genie takes Dr. Greenaway on an enchanting journey into the world of Disney stories. Through spirited production numbers, Dr. Greenaway learns that magic is real and is embodied in his beloved daughter.

More than 20 of Disney’s most beloved characters take the stage during “Disney’s Believe,” including Cinderella, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, Belle (“Beauty and The Beast”), Rafiki (“The Lion King”) and Princess Tiana (“The Princess and The Frog”).

The Golden Mickeys’: A Timeless Tribute
“The Golden Mickeys,” an award-style show celebrating the musical heritage of Disney animated films, is a Disney Cruise Line guest favorite. On the Disney Dream, the show gets an extra sprinkle of glitz and glamour with new musical numbers, enhanced technology and dazzling special effects.

New production numbers include an aerial ballet featuring Ariel from “The Little Mermaid,” an elegant ballroom waltz inspired by “Beauty and the Beast” featuring the Beast’s transformation into a prince, and a romantic duet performed by Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, lead characters of Disney’s newest animated feature, “Tangled.”

‘Villains Tonight!’
The malevolent world of the Disney villains takes a comical spin in “Villains Tonight!,” the first full-scale musical production dedicated to the Disney villains. The show is a fun-filled musical comedy starring Hades (“Hercules”), who embarks on a quest filled with wacky antics and amusing musical numbers to bring evil back into the Underworld.

“Villains Tonight!” features a “Who’s Who” of Disney “baddies,” including Jafar (“Aladdin”), Ursula (“The Little Mermaid”), the Evil Queen (“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”), Captain Hook (“Peter Pan”) and Scar (“The Lion King”).

Party on Deck
In addition to nightly stage productions, Disney Cruise Line brings the upper decks of the Disney Dream to life with incredible live entertainment.

The fun begins with “Sailing Away,” a “welcome aboard” show starring Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and the Disney gang. The show is a celebration of the fun aboard a Disney cruise, building to the exciting sounding of the ship’s horn.

On a special night each cruise, the entire Disney Dream transforms into a pirate ship with two new events brimming with buccaneer fun and a new fireworks spectacular.

The evening kicks off on the Donald Pool stage with “Mickey’s Pirates IN the Caribbean,” a family-friendly interactive show featuring the famous Disney characters. Guests become members of Mickey’s Pirate Crew as they participate on a series of pirate-themed musical numbers.

Later in the evening, a special appearance by Captain Jack Sparrow, from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, kicks off “Club Pirate,” a high-tech, open-air dance party on the upper decks of the ship. Guests unleash their inner pirate and dance their boots off during this family-friendly and electrifying bash featuring stunning visuals and special effects.

Fireworks at Sea
The only cruise line to feature fireworks at sea, Disney Cruise Line ups the entertainment ante and lights up the sky with the largest fireworks extravaganza presented aboard a cruise ship.

As an addition to the “Pirates IN the Caribbean” celebration, the skies above the Disney Dream explode with brilliant colors during “Buccaneer Blast!” With more “bang” than ever before, the pyrotechnic spectacular is choreographed to a dramatic score featuring songs from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, Peter Pan and the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at the Disney theme parks.

Don’t overlook the Plaza Restaurant at Walt Disney World

Don't overlook the Plaza Restaurant at Walt Disney World

The most over-looked table service restaurant in the Magic Kingdom has got to be The Plaza Restaurant on Main Street. Most people do not even know it is there! The Plaza sits on the corner of Main Street facing the castle and right next to the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor. It is quaint and old-fashioned with Victorian accents throughout the restaurant. The menu consists of the standard fare, burgers, sandwiches, soups and salads, but the desserts are what stand out the most here. On a recent visit, our group had one of everything! The brownie sundae was AMAZING and one of my favorite desserts of the week. No one in our party of 6 had any problems finding something enticing on the menu and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. At The Plaza, the portions are huge and the prices are low. This is a great option for anyone not on the dining plan. For just a few dollars more than counter service, you can have a great meal and a break from the heat as The Plaza is well air-conditioned.

Celebrations are plentiful at The Plaza. During our visit, there were several birthdays and anniversaries that were given much fan-fare, including decorated tables with pixie dust. The cast members were wonderful and treated each celebration as if it were the most important event that day.

One never knows what will happen when at Disney World and we experienced this first hand. Unbeknownst to us, a cast member had been talking to our son Jacob, 8, during our meal and we thought she was just being friendly but apparently she was on a mission! Jacob was surprised when he heard his name being called out by a man decorated with a sash and an old fashioned hat. He was given the honorary distinction of Junior Mayor of the Magic Kingdom for the day by none other than the Mayor himself. He received a ribbon, a certificate and a fast pass for 6 to be used anywhere in the Magic Kingdom that day! The look on his face when he realized what was happening is a memory that we will remember forever!

Sample Menu items include:

Angus Chuck Cheeseburger – Served on a flour-dusted Kaiser roll with lettuce, tomato, and onion. Choose from the following toppings: Cheddar, American cheese, bacon, grilled mushrooms, or grilled onions. Served with your choice of broccoli slaw, homemade chips, or French fries. Veggie Burger available upon request. – $11.99

Grilled Reuben – Thinly sliced corned beef on grilled marble rye with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing. Served with your choice of broccoli slaw, homemade chips, or French fries. – $10.49

Chicken Strawberry Salad – Fresh garden greens, grilled chicken breast, fresh strawberries, and Gorgonzola tossed in a White Zinfandel Vinaigrette dressing. – $12.99

Vegetarian Sandwich – Fresh mozzarella, hummus, basil pesto, cucumber, roasted red pepper, tomato, and lettuce on freshly baked focaccia. Served with your choice of broccoli slaw, homemade chips, or French fries. – $10.49

Brownie Sundae – Vanilla ice cream and a fudge brownie toped with hot fudge, whipped cream, and a cherry. – $5.99

Original Banana Split – Chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream topped with hot fudge, strawberry sauce, crushed pineapple, chopped nuts, whipped cream, and a cherry – $6.49

Newly Designed Disney Store Opens in San Francisco

Disney Store unlocks the imagination of the Bay Area last week with the opening of its newly-designed store in San Francisco, CA. Taking center stage is a celebration of the store’s creative technology, including innovative projection of Disney animation, lights, and colors onto towering polypropylene “magical trees” springing up throughout the store. Now a signature icon for the new stores, the larger-than-life trees create a new and unique way to bring to life Disney’s most beloved stories. Guests will be delighted to see that in tribute to San Francisco’s nearby forests, the new Disney Store is uniquely built around a two-story Lucite tree that transforms and coordinates color changes and lighting with trees throughout the store.

“Disney Store returns to San Francisco with a new design that complements the creativity and innovation that the city is known for,” said Molly Adams, vice president and general manger of Disney Store North America. “The Disney Store design team took inspiration from the City’s architecture and surrounding environments to once again re-imagine the Disney Store experience, and deliver a destination that is both authentically Disney yet tailored for local San Francisco families.”

Disney Store’s new design concept aims to deliver the best 30 minutes of a child’s day through interactive experiences that only Disney can offer such as a Magic Disney Princess Mirror, Lucite Magical Trees and the Disney Store Theater featuring the latest Disney entertainment. San Francisco is the first Northern California location to have a newly-designed Disney Store. The two-level 6,400-square-foot store integrates environmentally-friendly features such as 100% recycled materials in the flooring and perimeter fixtures. Care was taken to use eco-friendly, zero-VOC paint for all surfaces in the store, low energy consumption LED lighting and high-efficiency plumbing fixtures to conserve water.

Throughout the week, San Francisco families will see Disney Store branded-cable cars traveling the Powell Street route, celebrating the opening of the enchanting new store. Disney Store encourages fans to post photos taken in front of the Disney Store cable car and upload a picture to www.facebook.com/disneystore San Francisco’s iconic cable car is one of the featured design elements in Disney Store’s skyline that pays tribute to famous landmarks in the city. Guests will also notice the Golden Gate Bridge, the Palace of Fine Arts, Coit Tower, the Transamerica Building, and the gateway entrance to Chinatown alongside Disney icons from Mickey Mouse and Buzz Lightyear to Cinderella’s castle and Snow White’s cottage.

Adding to the fun, Disney Store will spotlight the exclusive Disney·Pixar CARS-branded RIDEMAKERZ experience, which offers the unique opportunity to custom build a 1:18 scale toy vehicle. Launching with three favorite characters – Lighting McQueen, Mater and Sally – fans use tools to assemble their cars from a wide array of fun accessories. I am always interested in what other peoples top places to grab a meal at Walt Disney World and why. It is just interesting to see why people choose a certain restaurant and what has influenced them in their decisions.

Here are my Top 5 Disneyworld Character Dining Restaurants

5.  1900 Park Fare – Breakfast here was very good. The Omlet Bar was a highlight for me. Seeing Alice was very nice since you don’t see her often enough in the parks. The resort itself has an old turn of the century type feel.

4. Princess Storybook Dining at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall – Almost all the Disney Princesses in one location and the Picture is included in the cost of the meal. A Must for all Disney Princesses.

3. Chef Mickey’s – Good Food, Great Location. A must for us at least 2 times every visit. You will not walk away hungry here even if the food is more of a traditional American fare.

2. Donald’s Safari Breakfast at Tusker House – Unique food and the restaurant has an open air market feel to it. Donald Duck and Pals are dressed very different than how you would see them elsewhere. Not as popular as some character Dining Dining restaurants which is ok by me as you can get in and out again pretty fast.

1. Ohana’s Best Friends Breakfast with Lilo & Stitch – Beautiful resort and some of the best dining at Disney World. The food has a Polynesian flare while not overpowering. If you get a view near the windows you can see Cinderellas Castle off in the Distance.
