Should Disneyland and California Adventure be Merged?

Should Disneyland and California Adventure be Merged?

Should Disneyland and California Adventure be merged into one giant park?

Attendance for California Adventure has been all over the place, to say the least, while Disneyland’s attendance has stayed strong (for the most part) despite the downhill state of the economy. World of Color and events like Glow Fest and ElecTRONica have brought up attendance slightly, but not much compared to Disneyland’s daily numbers.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Bob Iger talked about how Disney officials have considered merging the parks. The costs, though, might outweigh the benefits if this were to be done. Iger mentions how the parks would be merged and one higher priced ticket would buy you everything, but the costs to build transportation to get around the park would be a blow to Disney’s wallet. He explains that the way to bring up California Adventure’s attendance is the current $1 billion construction projects going on in the park (Cars Land, new entrance, etc.)

According to Iger, California Adventure’s attendance numbers rose 20% since the debut of World of Color.

ElecTRONica is also drawing in crowds on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

So what do you think? Should the parks be merged together to create one giant park, and we just pay a higher ticket price? Or should California Adventure remain separated from the main park?

Top 10 Kid-Friendly Disney Special Events

Top 10 Kid-Friendly Disney Special Events
Here at Chip and Company, we share a lot of money–saving tips and strategies. Getting more for your dollar just makes sense to me, especially in today’s economy. One of the easiest ways you can get more from your Disney dollar is to visit during one of Disney World’s many special events where you can be part of even more magic. It’s true that you will need to purchase an additional ticket for some events but most of them are free or low-cost. During these events, the parks are at their finest – decked out in their holiday best, providing access to the biggest names in sports, or showing off the creativity of Disney Cast Members who create incredible one-of-a-kind experiences.

Here are my picks for the top ten kid-friendly Disney World events.

Marathon Weekends. Ready, set, go! What better way to encourage kids to be fit and active than for them to participate in one of the Walt Disney World Marathon weekends? Kids can sign up for special races where everyone is a winner and receives a medal. Mickey’s Marathon Kid’s Fest 2011 is the weekend of January 7-8th and Disney’s Royal Family Kid’s Races 2011 is February 26th. Both feature Diaper Dash, 100m, 200m, 400m, and a Mickey mile race. Registration fees are low, $25 for the Mickey mile and $10 for other races. Register here.

ESPN the weekend. Guests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios can meet their favorite athletes, test their skills in sports zones, watch live ESPN broadcasts, and purchase special collectibles during this special event. The interactive sports zone is typically divided into sections for perennial favorites such as baseball, football, and basketball. All-star athletes may make an impromptu stop in this area to toss a ball around.. Disney’s ESPN weekend is traditionally the last week of February but rumors are swirling that it will be the first weekend of March this year. No special ticket is required, just admission to Hollywood Studios.

YES. Disney World becomes a classroom during the Youth Education Series (YES) programs. Now featuring Individual Enrollment, students of all ages can sign up for programs that bring learning to life by showing how math, science, history, and more are applied in attractions and other aspects of the Walt Disney World Resort. Programs fall into the following areas: Leadership & Careers, Arts & Humanities, Physical Sciences and Natural Sciences, and usually involve an opportunity to experience a few select attractions. Theme park tickets are required to participate but they are heavily discounted. For more information, visit Disney’s Youth Education Series.

Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival. This festival is a gastronomic feast for all ages. Running for about six weeks during the fall, Epcot visitors enjoy noshes from other cultures. Over twenty different booths around the World Showcase Lagoon serve up small plates, similar to tapas, representing their country’s cuisine. For about $3-5 a plate, guests can take a culinary tour of the world. This festival is great for kids for a couple of different reasons. First off, you would be hard-pressed to find a less expensive way to introduce your kids to international foods. If they don’t like it, you’re not out big bucks. Secondly, these booths redefine “fast food.” You’ll receive delicious, expertly cooked food in just a few minutes. Hungry kids can eat and go – no more sitting patiently waiting for dinner to be served.

Epcot’s International Flower and Garden Festival. Epcot is often misunderstood; parents tend to think it is too adult for kids and skip it altogether. This is a shame as there is a lot going for it – some great attractions, wider walkways, and the opportunity to meet popular Disney characters with shorter waits than at other parks. The Flower and Garden Festival, which begins in late winter and runs through the spring, is one of the best times to introduce kids to Epcot. Whimsical play areas appear overnight, amazing topiaries spring up, butterflies flutter in the butterfly garden, and the already beautiful gardens are elevated to a higher level with gorgeous and imaginative plantings. If you’re in Walt Disney World from March through mid-May, don’t miss an opportunity to experience this event.

Star Wars Weekends. The Star Wars franchise has stood the test of time. It captures the imagination of children (and adults) as much today as it did thirty years ago. Star Wars fans descend on Disney’s Hollywood Studios during weekends in late spring for autographs of their favorite Star Wars stars, a special motorcade, a parade, and perhaps even Storm Troopers standing guard high on top of the buildings. These four weekends are the only time you’ll likely to find lines for autographs rivaling the wait for top attractions. In fact, Fastpasses are distributed for autographs and guarantee that you’ll receive one.

Candlelight Processional. The Candlelight Processional in the outdoor American Gardens Theatre is the most moving event of the Holiday Season. The Christmas story is retold by a narrator while a splendid choir fills the stage. This event is free but you’ll have difficulty getting a seat as a walk-up unless you get in line early. Standby seating is limited due to the reserved seating for guests who purchase the Candlelight Processional dinner package. The cost of the dinner package varies based on which participating restaurant you select. Try a lunch packages to save a little money.

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. You may embarrass your pre-teens if you dress up for Halloween and tour your neighborhood but not so at Disney World. Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is the perfect excuse to put on your pirate garb and take your kids trick-or-treating inside the Magic Kingdom. This special hard-ticket event takes place on select nights. Highlights of this event include a special nighttime parade, Boo-to-You, and HalloWishes, a Halloween-inspired fireworks show.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Similar to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is a special after-hours event in the Magic Kingdom that requires the purchase of a separate ticket. Celebrate the holidays with “snow” on Main Street, cookies, hot chocolate, Cinderella Castle bedazzled with lights, a special Christmas themed parade, the Holiday Wishes fireworks show, and live stage shows. There’s something special about celebrating the holiday season at Disney World and this event is full of holiday spirit.

The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights. I love this free event; only park admission is required. When the sun goes down in Hollywood Studios, the lights on the Streets of America backlot turn on. The area is artfully covered in millions of little Christmas lights that “dance” to the music. It truly is a sight to behold and one you won’t want to miss.

These special events are a great way to plus up your Disney vacation. The hardest part is deciding which one to attend.

Disney’s Forgotten Treasure: Walt’s First Studio

Disney’s Forgotten Treasure: Walt’s First Studio

Located super close to my house in Garden Grove, CA is the Stanley Ranch Museum. The museum is home to several of the original buildings and homes built in Garden Grove, the oldest dating back to the mid-1860s. Garden Grove is next-door to Anaheim, the home of Disneyland.

The “studio” is actually a garage that had been owned by Walt’s uncle, Robert Disney. His uncle allowed Walt to use the garage when he came to North Hollywood in 1923.

The museum acquired the tiny studio in 1984 after The Friends of Walt Disney group saved it from demolition.

The Stanley Ranch Museum offers tours the first and third Sunday of every month at 1:30pm.

Mickey’s Tribute to Firefighters

Mickey’s Tribute to Firefighters

This Mickey Mouse Firefighter Tribute picture is one of my all time favorites. I own it in the form of a lithograph, a t-shirt and an extra large size postcard. My daddy was a captain on the fire department in my hometown for 35 years, so you can imagine that seeing Mickey in this way really touches my heart.

In 1993, December 15 was declared National Firefighters Day so in honor of that I did some research on this picture. I have been able to find out some interesting facts about this picture from Hammer Down Productions:

  • This print was produced by Disney as a tribute to all firefighters for their heroic efforts during the Southland Fires of 1993.
  • Disney called the Anaheim Fire Department requesting a firefighter to commission a sketch. The firefighter’s name is Dave Baker and he was a rookie at the time. He went to the Disney Studio and this print was produced in two weeks.
  • There are three characteristics that make this print unique that had never been done before by Disney:
  1. Mickey is always standing above everyone else or on a pedestal.
  2. Mickey is shaking hands with a person. Two other prints were done with Mickey touching another person, but not shaking hands.
  3. Mickey is looking up, he never is looking up in a print. He is either looking down or looking eye-level.

Changing these attributes as a tribute to the firefighters is just another example of the attention to every detail for which Disney is famous.

Just so you know, there are two other wonderful things in the Magic Kingdom that also pay tribute to firefighters: Engine Company 71 and Fire Chief Smokey Miller. As you enter Main Street in the Magic Kingdom you will notice a city complex on the left side of the road. City Hall is located here and, next to City Hall, is Engine Company 71. Engine Co. 71 – Firehouse Gift Station has gifts, clothing and other firefighter-related items for sale (it also has gifts for your pet). I bought my lithograph, t-shirt and postcard of this picture there. As you might guess, the “71” is representative of the year Walt Disney World opened its doors to the public. If you visit this terrific little store, be sure to notice the wonderful antique equipment on display, as well as all of the patches on the patch board. Fire department patches from all over the country have been donated by real firefighters. Last year, I took them a new Galveston Fire Department patch, in honor of my dad. This year, I will look for it and take a picture of its new home.

Another Main Street treasure is Chief Smokey Miller of the Main Street Volunteer Fire Department. He is one of the Main Street Citizens. When we ran into him he gave my hubby an “Official Main Street Fire Department Volunteer” sticker which rests right next to the picture in our photo album. What a really nice guy!

Be sure to check out Engine Co. 71 and Chief Miller when you are in the Magic Kingdom next time. Chief Miller might be hard to find but he is always around during the holidays.

Disney World Quick Tips – Signature Restaurants And Maximizing The Dining Plan

Disney World Quick Tips – Signature Restaurants And Maximizing The Dining Plan

We are huge fans of the Signature restaurants at Walt Disney World. The free dining offer available for at least the first 9 months of 2011 (with some blackouts) is an opportunity to take advantage of these restaurants at an absolutely minimal cost.

You can upgrade the free dining offer from the Disney Dining Plan to the Deluxe Dining Plan for $33 per adult per day. That may seem like a lot but let’s look at the differences between the plans:

DELUXE PLAN –

Three Table Service Credits per night for each person

Two Snack Credits per night for each person

One complimentary Refillable Mug per person

Table Service meals include Appetizer, Entree, Dessert, and non-alcoholic beverage

STANDARD PLAN

One Table Service Credit per person per night

One Quick Service Credit per person per night

One Snack Credit per night per person

Complimentary Refillable Mug not included

Table Service meals include Entree, Dessert, and non-alcoholic beverage (Kids 3-9 get appetizer also)

Even on the surface, $33/day is a bargain if you enjoy food. When you start to look a bit deeper you can see that if you use the plan wisely and take advantage of the Signature Restaurants (two Table Service Credits per meal) the extra money you spend is an unbeatable value.

Here are some options to consider:

  1. Eat breakfast Out Of Pocket and use the extra Table Service (TS) credit at one of the Signature Restaurants.
  2. Use a TS credit for breakfast and use snack credits for a quick meal in the parks and the extra TS credit for a Signature Restaurant.
  3. You can do the above interchangeably or any other way you like since the credits are yours to use as you please. You can even use TS credits for a Quick Service meal if you choose.

Upgrading is also useful if you plan on attending any of the Dinner Shows. They are also 2 TS meals and the only real restriction is at the Hoop De Doo Review where you can only use the credits for Category 2 or 3 seating except at the 9:30 PM show where they can be used for Category 1 seating. One more thing to remember about the dinner shows, these are the only Dining Plan meals where gratuities are included.

If you truly enjoy fine dining and exceptional food I encourage you to consider the ideas presented here. As I mentioned, upgrading Free Dining to Deluxe Dining is an opportunity to try meals at restaurants you might not ordinarily consider. Because it’s Disney, things are always subject to change so you might want to take advantage of this while you can. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Review: Disney’s A Christmas Carol on Bluray

Review: Disney’s A Christmas Carol on Bluray

I sat down to watch this classic Christmas tale this past weekend. Having missed it in theaters last year I was really looking forward to seeing it! The portrayal of Ebeneser Scrooge is spot on. Jim Carrey really portrays Scrooge as a mean, old, money grubbing grouch.

I was thinking my daughter would be able to watch this but there are several scenes that would really frighten a small child under 6 or 7. I am glad I checked this out with my wife first.

You can clearly tell this movie was made for 3D and I wish I could have seen it at the theater in 3D. There are several scenes that would be perfect in 3D on the big screen. One that comes to mind is the scene with the Ghost of Christmas Present. The 3-D film was produced through the process of performance capture, a technique Robert Zemeckis has previously used in his films The Polar Express and Beowulf.

The only complaint I have with the movie is the ending. It kinda seems rushed. I would liked to have seen Scrooge with Tiny Tim or visiting Cratchit’s family.

This is probably one of the closest adaptations to Charles Dickens‘ 1843 novel, A Christmas Carol, I have seen.

Overall I would say this is a really good movie. Something I will defiantly be adding to my Christmas movie watching. I will be adding this to the rotation of A Christmas Story, and Jim Carrey‘s How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

If Disney ever releases it back to theaters in 3D or if I ever take the plunge to get a 3D TV this will be one of the first movies I will be watching.

If you love Christmas movies and Polar Express, this is one you will want to add to your library. Let me know what you thought of this movie in the comment section below.

LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE TOYS!

MEET JESSIE…

Full Name: Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl

Occupation: Cowgirl toy

Talents: Expert yodeling, lasso and horse-riding skills

Year Made: 1957

Disney Behind The Scenes: Jessie the Yodeling CowgirlDescription: Jessie is a mega-rare cowgirl toy from the 1950s. She appeared in the wildly popular television show, Woody’s Roundup, as the sweet ‘n’ sassy sidekick to Sheriff Woody

This cowgirl appears near perfect after a recent repair, clean and polish.

Fast Fact: Jessie’s favorite phrase is: “Yee-hah!” But she’s also been known to blurt: “Sweet mother of Abraham Lincoln!”

Did You Know? Whenever Jessie is in trouble in Woody’s Roundup, she lets out a yodel and all of her critter chums come running to her rescue. This rough-and-tumble cowgirl has a special call for every creature in the wild west – from busy bobcats to eager beavers – and fans of the show can learn how to copy these calls with the help of a record released in 1957. She was kept in dark storage for years whilst awaiting delivery to a toy museum in Japan – but then Woody rescued her. Yee-hah!)

Disney World Quick Tips – Ten FREE Things To Do At Walt Disney World

Disney World Quick Tips – Ten FREE Things To Do At Walt Disney World

Yes, there are quite a few things you can do while you are at Walt Disney World for free. Free is not generally a word associated with anything Disney but if you look, these  things are there at no cost!! Here is a quick outline of ten things that run the gamut from FUN to USEFUL.

  1. Boat Ride From Downtown Disney To Port Orleans – If you look at the above picture you can see just how beautiful and serene this ride is It takes 20-25 minutes each way and the entire route looks much like this.
  2. Free Coca Cola Products – Club Cool is a cool (temperature) place to take a break from the heat and sample free Coca Cola products from around the world. Many of them are excellent but if you can con someone to try a drink called Beverly, have your camera ready for the reaction.
  3. Monorail Rides – Too often, the Monorail is looked at as transportation only. It’s actually a fun and relaxing way to pass some time. If you happen to be going to one of the Monorail Resorts, the Magic Kingdom, or Epcot it also meets your transportation needs – two for none so to speak.
  4. Entertainer Bob Jackson At Port Orleans Riverside – Bob Jackson provides music and comic antics for an evening of fun at the River Roost Lounge at Port Orleans Riverside. There is no cost for the entertainment but you may be inclined to have a beverage or two (drinks are not free – but you knew that).
  5. Music In The Grand Floridian Resort Lobby – Depending on the time of day and day of the week you can usually find either a talented pianist or a full dance orchestra playing in the lobby. This is a marvelous way to relax and unwind.
  6. Electrical Water Pageant – This happens nightly on the Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake. It is a group of lighted and decorated barges with accompanying music that passes by the Polynesian at around 9:00 PM and works its way past the Grand Floridian and then over to Bay Lake where it passes the Wilderness Lodge and ends up passing Fort Wilderness at approximately 9:45 PM. Very neat!! You can view them from the nearest beach or dock.
  7. Free Character Photo For Disney Visa Cardholders – In the Innoventions West building between 1:30 and 4:30 PM daily you can have a meet and greet and get a free 5×7 picture if you are a Disney Visa cardholder. Just show your card to get into the meet and greet.
  8. Storytelling At The Animal Kingdom Lodge – Each evening at the firepit at Arusha Rock outside the lobby, there is a storyteller who spins tales of Africa. If it’s rainy, they move the whole thing inside to the indoor firepit. Check with the Cast Members at the Animal Kingdom Lodge for the exact time because it varies by season.
  9. Free Entertainment On The Boardwalk – There are roving entertainers of all types each night on the Boardwalk. They are all free for your enjoyment and generally begin their performances at around 6:00 or 6:30 and go until 10:00 or 10:30 (people staying at the Boardwalk Inn have to sleep you know).
  10. Free Package Delivery To Your Resort – Items purchased while touring can be delivered to your resort for free. Just tell the cashier that you want them to go to the resort before they begin ringing your order. They say to allow 24 hours but I generally allow two days if you are leaving soon.

There you go!! So now you know that there are at least 10 free things at Walt Disney World. There are actually a lot more but 10 is a good starting point! As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Oldies But Goodies…More Than Buses Part 1

Oldies But Goodies…More Than Buses Part 1

There are a lot of folks who think that the only way to get from point A to point B at Walt Disney World is by using the bus system. There are many other ways to get around and this week and next I’ll try and address those alternatives. First of all, the Disney bus system is incredibly efficient and handles the majority of the needs of visitors beautifully. Even for us, the Oldies, the bus service provides a break from the heat (if not always from the crowds) and a worry free way to get from place to place.

The first alternative, surprisingly enough, is walking!! I walk for exercise on a regular basis and have noticed that a large percentage of the folks out there walking are from our age group – Oldies! Seniors love to walk, at least a lot of them do, and there are places at Walt Disney World where walking is sometimes quicker than other transportation options, plus, it’s better for you. Take a look at the picture above. This sign is very close to the Contemporary Resort and the walk from there to the Magic Kingdom is a pleasant 10-12 minute stroll. Other walkways run from the International Gateway at Epcot to the Epcot resorts. The walk to the Beach Club is fairly short but a bit longer to both the Boardwalk and the Yacht Club. All of these strolls are very manageable for folks without mobility issues. Perhaps the most surprising walkway runs from the Boardwalk area to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It is a solid 15-18 minute walk at a steady pace and may be a bit much for some but generally is not that difficult. The nice thing about this walk is that it is never crowded and runs along the same waterway that the Friendships use. It’s a very pleasant way to relax. We all know that walking in the theme parks is a way of life at Walt Disney World and the additional mileage you would put in on these strolls may be too much. If you feel able, give them a try but if you don’t, please don’t push it.

Another favorite alternative is the Monorail of course. It is ideal for those folks staying at the Magic Kingdom Resorts where a lot of the Oldies gang stays. There is nothing easier than walking out the front door of your resort (except of course at the Contemporary where you don’t even leave the building) and catching a smooth and comfortable ride to the Magic Kingdom or one of the other resorts. Perhaps my favorite Monorail loop runs from the Transportation and Ticket Center (T&TC) to Epcot and back. You can get to the T&TC by driving, bus, or either of the other 2 Monorail Loops. The first of those Loops runs clockwise and stops at the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Magic Kingdom, Contemporary and the T&TC. The express loop runs counterclockwise from the T&TC to the Magic Kingdom and back to the T&TC. When you get to the T&TC just follow the signs to the Epcot Monorail and sit back to enjoy the approximately 20 minute ride to Epcot. Just a quick hint, if you want a great view of Spaceship Earth sit on the right hand side of the cab as you face the front of the Monorail. For a view of the World Showcase, sit on the left. I’ve noticed that there are quite a few Seniors who just like to ride the entire Epcot Loop as a way to take a break from the parks.

These are a couple of alternatives and I will address what appears to be the most under used method next week. The numerous opportunities for boat travel are particularly attractive to us Oldies because it is such a pleasant and unhurried way to get from place to place. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

So guys even though this isn’t something you would use, it would make an excellent Christmas Present for your wife or significant other!!!

To receive an additional entry Retweet this Giveaway by using the Retweet button(above). I will say this 2 of the last 3 giveaways we have done on the Chip and Company website were won via the Retweet button. So be sure to share this with your Twitter fans!

If you have any questions let me know via my email address. ([email protected])

Special thanks to Steve at Pixie Vacations!

Good Luck
