Fox and the Hound and Fox and the Hound 2 Coming to Bluray August 9, 2011

Fox and the Hound and Fox and the Hound 2 Coming to Bluray August 9, 2011

In the tradition of heart-warming films, such as Bambi and Dumbo, comes Disney’s classic tales that taught us the power of friendship in The Fox and the Hound and The Fox and the Hound 2, in a special 30th Anniversary 2-Movie Collection.

For the first time ever in high-definition, consumers can now experience the brilliant, humor-filled adventures of best friends Copper and Tod in an all-new digitally restored version of the original 1981 film, arriving to stores on August 9, 2011.

Featuring an all-star cast of voice talents, toe-tapping music and fantastic bonus features, consumers can take home two of Disney’s beloved ―tails.∥ The Fox and the Hound and The Fox and the Hound 2, 2-Movie Collection features both movies in a single 3-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack. This release provides families with the value, versatility and opportunity to enjoy their favorite movies how they want, when they want and on the entertainment platform of choice – whether it’s in the home, on a portable device and/or in the car.

The Fox and the Hound and The Fox and the Hound 2 will be available as follows:

  • 3-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack (suggested retail price of $39.99 U.S. /$46.99 Canada)
  • 1 Blu-ray Disc that has both films on it
  • 1 DVD of The Fox and the Hound
  • 1 DVD of The Fox and the Hound 2
  • 2-Disc DVD Set (suggested retail price of $29.99 U.S./$35.99 Canada)
  • 1 DVD of The Fox and the Hound
  • 1 DVD of The Fox and the Hound 2
  • Movie Download (each film is sold separately)

Further engaging fans and families beyond the story itself, Disney has included five unique bonus features that provide consumers with the ability to further immerse themselves in the storyline, its history and characters themselves with an entertaining look inside the fascinating collection of unlikely friendships in the animal kingdom, Disney’s historic and legendary animators, the making of the music and more. They are as follows.

Bonus Features:

Blu-ray Disc:

  • Unlikely Friends: A fun and fascinating Collection of Unlikely Friendships in the Animal Kingdom (ALL-NEW) — Friendships know no boundaries. They can occur across country lines, be shared among young and old and even develop between different species!

DVD’s:

The Fox and the Hound:

  • “Best of Friends” Sing-A-Long – Viewers are invited to sing along with Pearl Bailey on this Walt Disney Classic Song.
  • Passing the Baton: Making of The Fox and the Hound – This feature allows fans to take a deeper look at this little bit of Disney history as legendary animators hand over the reins to a new generation.

The Fox and the Hound 2 :

  • “You Know I Will” Music Video – High School Musical Star Lucas Grabeel sings this end-credit song.
  • The Making of the Music – Music is the center stage in The Fox and the Hound 2. As such, this feature showcases how the songs in the film were created with Reba McEntire, Trisha Yearwood and some of the hottest performers in Nashville. Viewers will further discover how animation and music work together to further enhance a classic story.

The Fox and The Hound, Disney’s 24th animated feature released in 1981, marked a ―changing of the guard∥from the legendary ―nine old men,∥ including Wolfgang Reitherman, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, who had joined the studio its very early days and worked closely with Walt Disney to develop Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the very first animated feature, then went on to create timeless classics such as Cinderella, Bambi and Lady and the Tramp. These iconic figures passed the torch to a new generation of animators including Ron Clements (Animated Screenplay/Story Artist on The Princess and the Frog, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid) Glen Keane (Animation Supervisor/Directing Animator on Tangled, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid) and John Musker (Animation Supervisor/Directing Animator on Princess and the Frog, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid), who would lead Disney animation’s renaissance in the 1980’s with new landmark animated films such as The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.

The voice talent on The Fox and the Hound was also a mix of old and new Hollywood with veterans such as Mickey Rooney (National Velvet, The Black Stallion), Pearl Bailey (Porgy and Bess) and Pat Buttram (TV’s―Green Acres∥) joining up-and-coming stars Kurt Russell (Escape From New York, Miracle) and Corey Feldman (Stand By Me, The Lost Boys).

In 2006, Copper, Tod and their friends were brought back for The Fox and the Hound 2, featuring the vocal talents of Patrick Swayze (Ghost, Dirty Dancing), Reba McEntire (TV’s ―Reba∥), Lucas Grabeel (Disney Channel’s ―High School Musical∥ franchise) and Trisha Yearwood (country music singer).

Actress Ashley Eckstein, Voice of Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ Ahsoka Tano Guests on WDW Tiki Room 5/13/11

The Sorcerer Radio Network, a global leader in fan-based Disney internet radio and programming, is proud to welcome Star Wars: The Clone Warsstar, Ashley Eckstein as a guest on WDW Tiki Room Friday May 13, 2011 at 8:00 a.m./Eastern time.

Eckstein, former Walt Disney World cast member, Disney Channel alumni and the voice of Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be hosting the Behind the Force talk show as well as debut new wearables from her clothing line Her Universe. “Disney’s Hollywood Studios has played a huge part in my life,” says Eckstein. “Growing up in Orlando, my dad worked for Walt Disney World and I was at the theme park the first week it opened in 1989. It was a dream of mine to follow in my father’s footsteps and work for Disney. On my 16th birthday, I applied for a job at the ‘happiest place on Earth’ and was assigned to Disney’s Hollywood Studios where I would spend my weekends dancing in the parades and working in the restaurants! Now, to return to Disney’s Hollywood Studios for Star Wars Weekends as a host and a designer is magical!”

Eckstein, no stranger to Sorcerer Radio, was a guest on WDW Tiki Room last year to promote Star Wars Weekends. “She is always such a pleasure to have as a guest and is just as warm and sincere in person as she is on-air, even more so,” says WDW Tiki Room host Kristen Hoetzel.

Eckstein’s interview is just part of the great coverage Sorcerer Radio has in store beginning May 9-22. WDW Tiki Room will be streaming coverage of Epcot’s International Flower and Garden Festival, as well as opening day livestreams of Star Tours 3D: The Adventures Continue and the kick off of Star Wars Weekends.

About Ashley Eckstein:
Ashley Eckstein was born in Louisville, KY to a hard working Italian father and a creative elementary school teacher mother. When she was just a baby, my parents moved her family to Orlando, FL where her father took a position working for a very famous Mouse. You could say she grew up Disney. Her love affair with storytelling and fantasy began and thrived in that environment. As she continued to perform, you could definitely say that she was bit by the acting bug. In 2001, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a professional acting career. She worked on several television and movie projects including: That’s So Raven, Blue Collar TV, Drake and Josh, Sydney White and Alice Upside Down. In 2006 she landed the role of a lifetime when she was cast as the voice of Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. As a long time Star Wars fan, this was truly a dream come true and it also gave her the opportunity to finally be able to act and design professionally. Noticing a need for merchandise for female sci-fi fans, she founded Her Universe, a product line just for Her, starting with Star Wars and expanding to other well known franchises.

About Her Universe:
Her Universe is the vision of Ashley Eckstein, actress and voice of Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Together with her partner, The Araca Group, they founded this new company to create merchandise for female sci-fi fans. Her Universe is a place for fangirls to step into the spotlight and be heard, recognized and rewarded. Female sci-fi fans are growing in numbers and have largely gone unnoticed until now. Hoping to change the perception that science fiction and fantasy is not just for the boys, Her Universe, has secured it’s first license and joined forces with Lucasfilm to create merchandise for female Star Wars fans. Starting out with apparel, accessories and cosmetics, Her Universe will make fangirls “geek chic” from head to toe! Visit: heruniverse.com

Disney Leads Team to South Africa on Special Mission: Elephant Sterilizations

Disney Leads Team to South Africa on Special Mission: Elephant Sterilizations

A two-week visit to South Africa requires thoughtful planning, a good book for the long flights and efficient packing skills. Now imagine that your trip includes a vasectomy – for an elephant. Better not forget anything.

As they prepare to leave from Orlando International Airport, a team from Disney’s Animal Programs is packing enough medical supplies to conduct a series of procedures to help reduce elephant overpopulation in the wild. The team hopes to perform laparoscopic vasectomies on as many as 15 bull elephants in the Selati Game Reserve in South Africa.

Elephant overpopulation in wildlife parks and reserves is a growing problem in southern Africa that can have devastating effects on the natural habitat as well as other animal species that live there. Without a proven method of reproductive control for elephants, wildlife officials in many countries have considered culling elephants in an effort to control continued population growth.

During the past seven years, this international coalition of veterinarians, conservation groups, zoos, universities and private industry has performed the procedure on nearly 30 male elephants. The procedure is designed to reduce the elephant birth rates in wildlife reserves, while maintaining normal hormone levels and social behaviors for the individual elephants.

“Elephant population management is one of the most critical conservation issues facing many areas of Africa” said Dr. Mark Stetter, Director of Animal Health at Disney’s Animal Programs and principal investigator. “Through our recent successes, elephant vasectomy has been an effective tool at several wildlife reserves to reduce the need for culling, and help support the ecosystem. As an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Disney’s Animal Programs is committed to pioneering creative solutions to problems facing all wildlife by using the technology and tools available to address conservation and wildlife issues.”

In July 2004, this team of experts performed the first ever sterilization of free-ranging female elephants. In 2005, the group began its work with bull elephants and started developing laparoscopic vasectomy techniques for sterilizing males in the wild. Since then, the team has performed surgeries at the Swaziland Big Game Parks, Welgevonden Wildlife Reserve, Songimvelo Wildlife Reserve and the Pongola Game Reserve.

“Elephants are unique among most mammals since their testes are internal and require abdominal surgery to perform a vasectomy, making the relatively simple procedure much more complex to conduct on elephants in the wild,” according to Stetter.

The innovative procedure involves state-of-the-art laparoscopic equipment developed specifically for this project and scaled from human to elephant proportions by KARL STORZ at their headquarters in Germany. Laparoscopic surgery allows the surgeon to view the internal organs on a monitor and use long thin instruments to perform the surgery. With this type of minimally invasive surgery, the risk of infection is greatly diminished, procedure time is significantly reduced and post-operative discomfort is minimized.

In collaboration with the Selati Game Reserve this work is part of a long-term behavioral research study investigating the genetic, animal behavioral and population dynamics of elephant herds over many years. The primary focus of this year’s effort is to transfer the international coalition’s skills to their South African counterparts. Veterinarians from the University of Pretoria Faculty of Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort will participate in the elephant procedures and learn to perform the surgery. Developing this kind of local expertise is critical to the long-term success of the program.

This is an international collaborative project that brings together conservation groups, universities and private industry that make up the Elephant Population Management Program, (EPMP). The EPMP is non-profit organization formed to help solve complex issues associated with elephant management including saving the elephants and preserving ecosystems.

Working with the Selati Game Reserve, Disney and the EPMP hope to ensure that elephants and their habitats will flourish for many years. For the EPMPs website for more information: http://elephantpmp.org/

Disney Encourages Couch Potatoes to Get More Active

Disney Encourages Couch Potatoes to Get More Active

If the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, often times the biggest step is the one that starts with getting off the couch.

As part of an effort to inspire cast members to take a more proactive approach to their health and well-being, Walt Disney World Resort recently teamed up with Active Network to launch the “Couch to 5K” Challenge. The program includes personalized training plans, online resources and coaches who provide expert advice to help cast members become more active, no matter where they are on their fitness journey.

Since the program began in January, approximately 1,400 cast members have participated in a series of training walks led by certified fitness advisors. As a result, nearly 250 cast members have accepted the challenge and are in training for a 5K run May 7.

“Across our organization, cast members at all levels are taking ‘one simple step’ on a journey of wellness toward a healthier lifestyle,” said Tracy Swanson, vice president of workforce planning for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.  “We hope to make it easier than ever for our cast members to take advantage of the many health and wellness resources available to them.”

A sampling of other programs and services includes:

  • a choice of five quality health care plans that enable eligible cast and their dependents to select the plan that best meets their needs;
  • preventive care benefits that are generally available at no additional cost to plan participants and their covered dependents;
  • on-site health and wellness offerings, such state-of-the-art, Center for Living Well that provides eligible cast members and their families with a “one-stop shop” for primary medical care and related services, including a pharmacy, lab, basic radiology, and wellness and behavioral health resources.
  • educational and screening opportunities, health fairs and discounts on weight loss programs and gym memberships;
  • access to online tools and resources, such as a personal health assessment and a prescription drug price comparison tool; and
  • programs to support health plan members with chronic conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Disney’s Tim Burton LACMA book-signing 5/28

Disney's Tim Burton LACMA book-signing 5/28

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art will present Tim Burton, a major retrospective exploring the full range of Tim Burton’s creative work, both as a director of live-action and animated films, and as an artist, illustrator, photographer, and writer. Taking inspiration from popular culture, fairy tales, and traditions of the gothic, Burton has reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking as an expression of a personal vision.

On view at LACMA from May 29 through October 31, 2011, the exhibition brings together over 700 drawings, paintings, photographs, moving-image works, storyboards, puppets, concept artworks, maquettes, costumes, and cinematic ephemera, including art from a number of unrealized and little-known personal projects. Many of these objects come from the artist’s own archive, as well as from studio archives and private collections of Burton’s collaborators.

This exhibition was organized by The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

The Los Angeles presentation was made possible in part by LACMA’s Wallis Annenberg Director’s Endowment Fund.

Disney “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” Swashbuckling Jewelry Collection

Disney "Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" Swashbuckling Jewelry Collection

Swarovski presents its latest collection based on Walt Disney Pictures’ and Jerry Bruckheimer Films‘ next swashbuckling adventure in the popular film series, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” directed by Rob Marshall, and opening in theaters on May 20, 2011, in Disney Digital 3D™.

The new “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” 11-piece collection of rings, earrings, charm bracelets and necklaces, marks a new chapter in Swarovski’s collaboration with Disney Consumer Products. Following the success of the Spring/Summer 2010 Alice in Wonderland collection, this collection features designs that are closely linked to key characters and icons of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” Also included in the collection are carefully crafted replicas of pieces worn by the main characters interpreted by Penélope Cruz and Johnny Depp in the movie.

“We had great fun searching for the typical and symbolic codes of the Pirates of the Caribbean universe. Without being clichéd, we looked for a way to interpret symbols and figurative motifs in a modern way that is always the signature of Swarovski collections. The overall twist is a modern ‘rock-inspired,’ edgy collection,” says Nathalie Colin, Swarovski Creative Director.

With a gothic influence and a vintage touch, black pearls, skulls and swords are the stars of the four lines in this creative Pirates of the Caribbean-inspired collection, which has been designed to appeal to both men and women alike.

The “Angelica” family is inspired, and named after, the character played by Penélope Cruz. Echoing her swordswoman skills and taste for adventure, sword and gun symbols adorn both a pendant and a necklace. This theme also features replicas of pieces worn by the daring “Angelica”: the cross pendant, complete with a crystal pavé vintage look, and a vintage dragon ring embellished by green mini crystals applied by hand, using the exclusive Pointiage® technique. “We recreated a surface metal effect that gives an antique look to the jewels, like those worn by pirates in the 17th and 18th century,” Nathalie Colin explains.

The “High Sea” line takes everyone on board with shark teeth, compass and message-in-a-bottle elements. The octagonal pendant, made of black enamel and pavé finishing, reveals a compass with a mobile dial. The original is to be seen on-screen worn by Captain Jack Sparrow.

Inspired by Captain Jack Sparrow’s ship, the “Black Pearl” line is all about mystery and refinement. Playing with the nautical symbols of the anchor and the twisted cord, the necklace, pendant, rings and earrings create a feminine and stylish set. The subtle pavéwork emphasizes the beguiling beauty of the black crystal pearl on each jewel.

The “Skulls and Swords” theme exemplifies a masculine influence. Skulls adorn a ring, a bangle and a pendant with striking effect. The design is pure and minimalist for the unisex line.

Through the glamour, sparkle and magic of the “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” collection, the fascinating reflections and eye-catching sparkle of Swarovski jewelry—coveted the world over—continue to radiate on screen and on the red carpet.

Available at Swarovski Stores and www.Swarovski.com starting May 2, 2011.

ABOUT SWAROVSKI
In 1895, Daniel Swarovski, a Bohemian inventor and visionary, moved to the village of Wattens, Tyrol in Austria, with his newly-invented machine for cutting and polishing crystal jewelry stones. From this beginning that revolutionized the fashion world, Swarovski has grown to be the world’s leading producer of precision-cut crystal for fashion, jewelry and more recently lighting, architecture and interiors. Today, the Swarovski group, still family-owned and run by 4th and 5th generation family members, has a global reach with some 24,800 employees, a presence in over 120 countries and a turnover in 2009 of 2.25 billion Euros. Swarovski comprises two major businesses, one producing and selling loose elements to the industry and the other creating design-driven finished products. Swarovski crystals have become an essential ingredient of international design. Since 1965 the company has also catered to the fine jewelry industry with precision-cut genuine and created gemstones. Showing the creativity that lies at the heart of the company, Swarovski’s own brand lines of accessories, jewelry and home décor items are sold through more than 1,800 retail outlets worldwide. The Swarovski Crystal Society has close to 350,000 members across the world, keen collectors of the celebrated crystal figurines. And in Wattens, Swarovski Kristallwelten, the multi-media crystal museum, was opened in 1995 as a celebration of Swarovski’s universe of innovation and inspiration. The Swarovski group also includes Tyrolit®, manufacturing grinding tools, Swareflex, for road safety reflectors and Swarovski Optik, producing precision optical instruments.

Best Vegetarian Eats in Walt Disney World Theme Parks

Greek Salad at Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World

Plenty of Walt Disney World guests are looking for vegetarian eats in the theme parks, so we did a little scouting to find the best. These are our choices – what are yours?

In Magic Kingdom Park, quick-service picks include the Greek salad, veggie wrap or veggie burger at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe in Tomorrowland. Across the park in Frontierland, we like the veggie flatbread at Golden Oak Outpost. And the Lighthouse Sandwich at Columbia Harbour House in Liberty Square, a delicious stack of hummus and broccoli slaw on whole-grain bread.

For table service, our top pick is Tony’s Town Square Restaurant: at lunch, the eggplant stack with caramelized onions, fresh mozzarella, Parmesan, red sauce and penne pasta; at dinner, the gnocchi with goat cheese and leek cream sauce and spinach.

At Disney’s Hollywood Studios we go for the grilled vegetable sandwich at Backlot Express when we’re on the run. For a meal to savor, hands down it’s the substantial Cobb Salad or the noodle bowl with wok-fried coconut tofu, soybeans, sugar snap peas, bok choy and shiitake mushrooms in a red curry broth (pair it with a Riesling for a delicious memory) at the Hollywood Brown Derby Restaurant.

We found lots of great vegetarian tastes at Epcot. For a quick bite, Tangierine Café in the Morocco Pavilion has a vegetarian platter with hummus, tabouleh, lentils, falafel and marinated olives with fresh Moroccan bread. Or grab a cheese plate and fresh baguette at Boulangerie Patisserie in the France Pavilion. In the Japan Pavilion’s Teppan Edo, we go for yasai, fresh seasonal vegetables with udon noodles and steamed rice.

Among favorite table-service spots are La Hacienda in the Mexico Pavilion for the black bean soup with cactus leaves, queso franco and Mexican cream, the roasted sweet peppers with lime and sea salt and the spinach house salad with queso fresco, tomatoes, pomegranate, pine nuts and avocado drizzled with mustard vinaigrette. Add a lime-raspberry margarita! At Le Cellier Steakhouse in the Canada Pavilion, we make a meal of the sides: wild mushroom risotto, creamed spinach, baked mac and cheese and amazing grilled asparagus. Let them eat steak! And we have to give a shout out for our favorite wood-burning oven margherita pizza at Via Napoli.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom favorites include the veggie eggroll from the Bradley Falls kiosk, and the bounteous buffet at Tusker House – one of the best Walt Disney World places for a vegetarian to graze. Chutneys, salad, curried basmati rice, spiced tandoori tofu, saffron-infused vegetables, couscous with roasted vegetables, vegetable samosas, pearl couscous with sweet basil, basmati rice with toasted almonds…the list goes on.
