New Looks! New Stores!…at Disneyland Resort

A few weeks back, we took a look at The Star Trader in Tomorrowland, which re-opened this past Friday. For those of you who haven’t made it to the parks for a visit yet, here is a look at the X-wing starfighter that I teased you about. I hate to state the obvious, but it really is out of this world! If you’re on planetary patrol and keeping tabs on all things Star Tours, then be prepared to get on board because these are definite ‘must haves’ that you won’t want to miss.

Excited for the opening of Goofy’s Sky School and already looking to find that special souvenir to commemorate your visit? Keep your eyes open for collectible pins that are available now at nearby merchandise locations – you’ll definitely want to jet in and check them out. Passholders, before take-off, make sure to do a ‘fly by’ of Embarcadero Gifts, as we will be releasing the Goofy’s Sky School Passholder commemorative coin starting May 31. Special Tip: The artwork used in the design of the coin is based on Walt Disney Imagineering art for the attraction.

Last but not least, on July 1, make way for our newest location, Seaside Souvenirs (previously Souvenir 66). This new merchandise shop is a true treasure trove. It’s the one-stop shop for Little Mermaid and World of Color souvenirs and a great place to have items personalized with embroidery. Here’s a special sneak a peek of the new logo for Seaside Souvenirs.

Wednesday with Walt: Sunny-Side Up

Wednesday with Walt: Sunny-Side Up

“Everybody in the world was once a child. So in planning a new picture, we don’t think of grownups, and we don’t think of children, but just of that fine, clean, unspoiled spot down deep in every one of us, that maybe the world has made us forget, and that maybe our pictures can help us recall.”  – Walt Disney

I remember watching Walt Disney’s Pollyanna when I was a young girl. Being a fun-loving child who was always trying to look on the bright side of things, I really related to Pollyanna. Released on May 19th, 1960, this movie is one of the sweetest movies I’ve ever seen. A heart-warming story with a great message; I enjoy watching it over and over again.

Pollyanna is the story of an orphaned daughter of missionaries who is sent to live with her Aunt Polly. Having been very poor while living with her parents, she now comes to live with her extremely wealthy aunt who is an ultra-reserved New Englander, and the richest woman in town. Since she owns nearly everything in the town, everyone kowtows to her, despite her horrible demeanor. Pollyanna, on the other hand, wasn’t blessed with wealth but she was blessed with a cheery disposition and a gift to see the good in almost every situation. Now, she is placed in a town of mostly miserable people who tend to see the bad in everything. Aunt Polly moves Pollyanna into a room in the attic, as far away from her as possible. It doesn’t take long, though, for Pollyanna to befriend Aunt Polly’s staff, as well as an orphan boy named Jimmie Bean.

As Pollyanna spends more time in Harrington, she starts to change everyone’s attitudes. She plays “The Glad Game” with her new friends and neighbors and gradually wins over the entire town with her love and optimism. She even convinces the town’s fire-and-brimstone reverend, who lives to strike fear into his congregation, to preach good news to the churchgoers.

When the town throws a big charity bazaar to help build a new orphanage, Aunt Polly doesn’t let Pollyanna go because she disagrees with the cause. Jimmy convinces Pollyanna to sneak out by climbing down a tree, but when she returns home, she falls and her legs are paralyzed. Aunt Polly’s former love, Dr. Chilton, tells her that he can perform a surgery to fix Pollyanna, but they will need to lift her out of her depression for it to be successful. Pollyanna never realizes all the good she has done in the town, but when she faces this crisis, all of her friends rally around her.

Walt’s storytelling couldn’t be better. Pollyanna really shows Walt’s sentimental side. The movie naturally presents a lovely message and in a heart-warming way reminds me of how I can adjust my attitude for a better way of life. It’s uplifting and glaringly truthful about human beings, both in 1960 and today. Even though it is set in the early 1900’s, the message is still very applicable in the modern world. It is laced with funny little tidbits, such as Pollyanna’s facial expressions. If you watch her, you can tell there are times when she is thinking that everyone in town is completely nuts, but she never says it out loud. Instead, she keeps a happy and hopeful demeanor throughout most of the movie. And while the townspeople resent her attitude at first, and even insult her, she doesn’t let go of who she is, and she is rewarded for it in the end.

The film is set in the picturesque town of Harrington, and Walt did a wonderful job in recreating that era in small town America. Watching it today, it has such a charming and nostalgic feel to it.  The scenery is so reminiscent of Main Street USA, I long to be back at Walt Disney World again.

I used to see Pollyanna as being sunny-side up. She affected everyone and everything around her. The really special part of this story for me, when I first saw it many years ago, was how a little girl softened the hearts of the adults in the town, making them realize that they should be happy to be healthy and alive.

Pollyanna is without a doubt one of Walt Disney’s best films. It’s a great family movie; just as good now as it was when I first saw it in as a child in the 1970s. If you have never seen Pollyanna, or have not seen it in a while, might I suggest you do? If your children have not seen it, this would be a great family night movie for everyone to enjoy together.

There are many recent Disney movies that I love, such as the Pirates of the Caribbean series and my new favorite animated film, Tangled 3D. But this movie is totally representative of the Walt-era of Disney movie-making. Walt made pictures that touched his heart and, in the process, he touched all of our hearts as well.

Disneyland Resort Celebrates Soundsational Summer!

Disneyland Resort Celebrates Soundsational Summer!

Disney excitement of all kinds – from under the sea, to down Main Street, U.S.A., and to a galaxy far, far away – arrives at Disneyland Resort in summer 2011. Several highly anticipated attractions and entertainment experiences will make their debuts, enhancing all the fun and adventure that create memories for guests throughout the year at the Disneyland Resort. Highlights of this Soundsational Summer include the latest milestone in the expansion of Disney California Adventure park, The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, plus the sensational new 3D excursions of Star Tours and the exciting new “Mickey’s Soundsational Parade” in Disneyland park.

  • The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure – The adventures of Ariel will unfold in colorful scenes filled with Audio-Animatronics characters and memorable music from the Disney animated motion picture hit “The Little Mermaid” when this modern version of the classic Disney “dark ride” premieres in Disney California Adventure on Friday, June 3. The attraction brings the popular motion picture to life in magnificent scenes where guests will sing along with Sebastian and friends, keep an eye out for the evil Ursula, and experience the romance of Ariel and Eric. Special effects will transport guests “under the sea,” taking them into Ariel’s world in ways never before seen.
  • Star Tours – The Adventures Continue – Guests will never know where the Force might take them as they embark on thrilling new Star Tours journeys, now enhanced with the breathtaking immersion of 3D. Premiering Friday, June 3, in Disneyland Tomorrowland, the new journeys will feature more than 50 different story combinations, bridging that “long, long time ago” between the two “Star Wars” trilogies. At the bustling new Spaceport where droids run the show and excursions to the stars are advertised overhead, eager travelers will board fully reimagined Starspeeders for interstellar treks to Coruscant, Hoth, Naboo and many more destinations in the “Star Wars” galaxy. In the course of their adventures, voyagers will encounter characters from the “Star Wars” movies, some of them making their first appearances in the refreshed attraction.
  • “Mickey’s Soundsational Parade” – Explosions of dynamic rhythm and bold percussion will accompany beloved Disney characters as they stomp and strut along Main Street, U.S.A., in the new “Mickey’s Soundsational Parade,” premiering Friday, May 27. The parade brings characters and melodies from Disney films to life with a syncopated drum line, flashing cymbals and more than 90 performers, as Mickey Mouse and his pals get the Disneyland crowd into the beat of this giant jam session. “Mickey’s Soundsational Parade” features nine parade floats, each designed in the style of a children’s “pop-up” storybook with eye-catching visuals and whimsical details.

Also at Disneyland:

  • “Magical” Fireworks Spectacular – Tinker Bell and Dumbo will take to the air over Sleeping Beauty Castle as the “Magical” fireworks spectacular returns for its third consecutive summer. Tink waves her wand to awaken a pyrotechnic spectacular inspired by Disney’s most magical characters, including Pinocchio, Mary Poppins, Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother, and the Three Good Fairies from “Sleeping Beauty.” Dumbo makes a “Magical” summer appearance, too, as the enchanting storytelling of a fireworks show creates memories for guests of the Disneyland Resort.

Also at Disney California Adventure:

  • Goofy’s Sky School – Joining the fun along Paradise Pier beginning June 3, this coaster attraction is inspired by the classic Goofy “How-to” shorts of the 1940s and 1950s as well as the cartoon short “Goofy’s Glider.” The theme is a flying academy with your pal Goofy as the wacky instructor. Guests will enjoy all the dips, twists and thrills as Goofy tries to teach a group of novice pilots how to soar through the sky.
  • Disney Junior – Live on Stage!” – “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” are now appearing at Disney California Adventure as part of “Disney Junior – Live on Stage!” – a theme park show that is a favorite of young guests. Co-starring in the production are characters from “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,” “Handy Manny” and “Little Einsteins” – other shows that are part of the Disney Junior schedule on Disney Channel. Children and families are invited to dance and sing along as “Disney Junior–Live on Stage!” is presented several times daily.
  • Paradise Pier – New restaurants, shops and attractions will open this summer as Paradise Pier completes its transformation into a vintage beachside playland. New dining locations will include Paradise Garden Grill and Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta. The popular Corn Dog Castle returns, along with Seaside Souvenirs (formerly Souvenir 66), a restyled merchandise location. These additions will be adjacent to the new Goofy’s Sky School and Little Mermaid attractions.
  • “World of Color” – The award-winning “World of Color” water spectacular continues for a second summer of nightly performances on Paradise Bay. The show combines nearly 1,200 versatile, performing fountains, popular Disney music and a kaleidoscope of audio and visual effects, including both classic and new animation projected on giant screens of water. “World of Color” floods the senses and takes the audience on an imaginative, emotional journey into the colorful worlds of Disney classics such as “The Lion King” and “The Little Mermaid” along with Disney?Pixar films including “Toy Story” and “Finding Nemo.”
  • “ElecTRONica” – The party on “The Grid,” inspired by the Disney movie, “TRON: Legacy,” will continue nightly throughout the summer. “ElecTRONica” features music, live performances and interactive experiences, and it has become the place to dance the night away. Inspired by the computer-world environment of “TRON: Legacy,” ElecTRONica comes to life in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot. DJs keep the energy going with electronic party music while dancers costumed as “Sirens” and “Programs” from the movie rock out at locations throughout the party.

At the Disneyland Hotel:

  • Disneyland Hotel Enhancements – As part of an exciting renovation, the Disneyland Hotel gets a retro theme with a contemporary twist. Along with beautiful new décor in the rooms and a new pool, guests will enjoy historic and nostalgic elements of Disneyland park reminiscent of the 1950s. In keeping with that spirit, the new Tangaroa Terrace restaurant will open this spring, along with the new bar, Trader Sam’s. Their tiki-inspired design and storyline tie in thematically with the mid-century modern architecture of the Disneyland Hotel and the adjacent Dream Tower, soon to be renamed Adventure Tower.

About the Disneyland Resort: The Disneyland Resort features two theme parks – Disneyland (the original Disney theme park) and Disney California Adventure park – plus the Downtown Disney District comprised of unique dining, entertainment and shopping experiences. The Resort’s three hotels are the luxurious, newly expanded 948-room Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, the magical 970-room Disneyland Hotel and the 481-room Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel with its “day-at-the-beach” fun. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Soundtrack Sets Sail With Oscar Winning Composer Hans Zimmer at the Helm

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Soundtrack Sets Sail With Oscar Winning Composer Hans Zimmer at the Helm

Walt Disney Records will release the original motion picture soundtrack for Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on May 17, 2011.  Oscar® winner Hans Zimmer (“Inception,” “The Lion King”), composer for the three previous “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, once again captains the musical ship, in collaboration with acclaimed guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela, and featured performances by legendary trumpet-player Arturo Sandoval.  The soundtrack album also showcases songs re-mixed by top DJs (including Adam Freeland, Photek, and Static Revenger).

Hans Zimmer is one of the film industry’s most respected and sought-after composers with a career that encompasses more than 100 film and television scores.  An Academy Award® winner for his score for “The Lion King,” Zimmer has also received eight additional Oscar® nominations for his work including “Inception,” “Sherlock Holmes,” “Gladiator,” “The Thin Red Line,” “Rain Man,” “As Good as It Gets,” “The Preacher’s Wife,” and “The Prince of Egypt.”  Other recent credits include “Rango,” “The Dark Knight” and “Batman Begins.” Among his many honors, Zimmer has also won two Golden Globes® and four Grammy Awards®.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has a distinctive Latin flavor.  Zimmer said, “We have Penelope Cruz playing Angelica, who’s Spanish, so I felt that there could be some Latin influences in the score for On Stranger Tides.”

To achieve this, Zimmer reached out to Rodrigo y Gabriela.  “I’ve been a big fan of Mexican guitarists Rodrigo y Gabriela for years now,” said Zimmer, “and I asked them if they wanted to come and play with us.  We’ve been having a really great time with them being part of the musical world this film gets to inhabit.”

Rodrigo y Gabriela are considered the premier guitar-playing duo in the world.  They have sold over one million albums, have sold out arenas and headlined festivals worldwide, and in 2010 they were invited to share the stage with Beyonce for a state dinner at the White House. The collaboration with Hans Zimmer is their first film score—an exciting and defining moment in their career.  Their willingness to explore musical expression and to embrace new sounds irrespective of fashion or trends, as well as their point blank refusal to be pigeonholed as any particular genre, is the very foundation of Rodrigo y Gabriela.

For a key scene in the film, featuring a highly choreographed Tango between Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz, Hans Zimmer collaborated not only with Rodrigo y Gabriela but also Eduardo Cruz —Penelope’s brother, an up-and-coming composer/songwriter.   Also imparting a Latin flavor to the music is legendary jazz great Arturo Sandoval.  The Cuban born, four-time Grammy® Award–winner is the featured trumpet player for the score.

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” captures the fun, excitement and humor that ignited the hit franchise—this time in Disney Digital 3D™. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in this action-packed adventure that finds him crossing paths (and swords) with the enigmatic Angelica (Penelope Cruz). When she forces him aboard the “Queen Anne’s Revenge,” the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected journey to the fabled Fountain of Youth. Along the way Jack must use all his wiles to deal with the barbarous Blackbeard and his crew of zombies, Angelica, the ravishing pirate with whom he shares a dubious past, and the beautiful, enchanting mermaids whose masterful cunning can lure even the most seasoned sailor to his doom. The international cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the indestructible Captain Hector Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.

Walt Disney Pictures’ and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” opens in theaters May 20, 2011, in Disney Digital 3D™, with screen story and screenplay by Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio, based on characters created by Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio and Stuart Beattie and Jay Wolpert, and suggested by the novel by Tim Powers.

The Disney Channel Original Hit Movie Comes Home! LEMONADE MOUTH on DVD 5/24!

Be heard. Be strong. Be proud. Disney invites audiences of all ages to turn up the music and have some fun with the highly-anticipated 2-Disc DVD + Digital Copy debut of LEMONADE MOUTH, the hit Disney Channel Original Movie, starring Bridgit Mendler, Adam Hicks, Hayley Kiyoko, Naomi Scott, Blake Michael, Nick Roux, Chris Brochu, Tisha Campbell-Martin and Christopher McDonald, and featuring an exclusive extended music scene that fans can only get on this Extended Edition DVD release.

In addition to featuring 10 awesome original songs from the No. 1 soundtrack, the exciting LEMONADE MOUTH: EXTENDED EDITION DVD release includes an exclusive extended performance of “Livin’ on a High Wire” and an exciting “Rock-Along” version of the movie that allows fans to sing along, with lyrics to all the songs, appearing on-screen. Both features are available only on the DVD that debuts in the US on May 24, 2011 (Canada on May 17, 2011).

LEMONADE MOUTH is a resonant, music-filled movie about five teens who break through to become the voice of their generation. The movie is 2011’s No. 1 cable movie in Total Viewers and the No. 1 TV movie among Kids 6-11 and Tweens. Additionally, LEMONADE MOUTH’s original soundtrack also has become a huge success, ranking in the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 for two weeks, No. 1 on the iTunes Soundtrack chart and No. 4 on the iTunes Album chart. The album also ranked No. 1 on Billboard’s Soundtrack and Children’s Music charts. Moreover, hit songs “Somebody,” “Determinate” and “Don’t Ya Wish U Were Us” rank in the Radio Disney Top 30.

Synopsis
This spirited, music-driven movie introduces an unlikely ensemble of five students — Olivia, Wen, Stella, Mohini and Charlie – who, after meeting in detention, gradually realize their shared musical connection and belief that it’s time for the students of Mesa High to stand up and be heard on things big and small (ranging from the school Principal’s exclusive support of the athletic programs to the removal of the popular organic lemonade from the cafeteria). Ultimately, as they open up to each other and form friendships, they start a band — Lemonade Mouth — that soon resonates with students sidelined by the high school elite. However, not everyone in the school is ready to cheer them on, especially since the popular rock group Mudslide Crush is determined to maintain their headline status and win the coveted Rising Star music competition.

Based on the book Lemonade Mouth by Mark Peter Hughes and directed by award-winning Patricia Riggen (La Misma Luna aka Under the Same Moon), executive-produced by Debra Martin Chase (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Disney Channel’s “The Cheetah Girls” movies), co-produced by Gaylyn Fraiche (Just Wright, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2) and choreographed by Chris Scott (TV’s “So You Think You Can Dance”).
