Disney Gives $1.2 Million to Benefit Central Florida’s Children

Disney Gives $1.2 Million to Benefit Central Florida’s Children

Arriving at the Hope CommUnity Center with a Disney grant for $41,000, Walt Disney World cast members awarded the organization its top grant this morning as it marked the end of a 40-day celebration to surprise, recognize and reward organizations that improve the lives of local children.

Since April 13, Walt Disney World has given more than $1.2 million in Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants on its journey across Central Florida to shine a spotlight on organizations that educate, develop and care for local youth.

“This year, in honor of Disney’s 40-year history in Central Florida, we decided to celebrate with 40-days of giving back to our community,” said Nancy Gidusko, director of Walt Disney World Community Relations. “We are proud of all of Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants recipients. Through their tireless efforts, these deserving organizations are building a brighter future for Central Florida’s children and us all.”

For the second year in a row, Hope CommUnity Center received the top application-based Disney Helping Kids Shine Grant – the Bob Allen Outstanding Community Service Award. Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney World Resort President Meg Crofton and members of the Allen family were on hand to give $41,000 to the nonprofit’s Youth Empowerment Program.

“Our founder, Walt Disney, believed very much in celebrating the potential of children and recognizing the responsibility of adults to help shape young lives,” said Crofton. “Here at the Hope CommUnity Center, the Youth Empowerment Program strengthens the academic and emotional well-being of youth so they become active in their families and their community. I’d say Walt would be very proud to know we have selected this program as a model of excellence.”

Walt Disney World annually gives Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants to organizations that demonstrate alignment with Disney’s goal of improving children’s lives by focusing on one or more of the following areas: connecting with adults, character development, constructive use of free time and compassion. Of the more than 130 charities that applied for Disney grants this year, 62 were selected to receive funding for their programs.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Marks 10 Years of Conservation Leadership

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Marks 10 Years of Conservation Leadership

While guests may visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge to experience the more than 200 animals from 30 different species roaming across 46 lush acres, the generosity of those guests has also funded conservation projects that extend far beyond the savannahs of the resort hotel.

Since Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge opened its doors ten years ago, the merchandise shops at the resort hotel have cumulatively raised more than $390,000 in donations from guests for the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund (DWCF), more than any other resort location.

The Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund was established on Earth Day in 1995 as a global awards program for the study and protection of the world’s wildlife and ecosystems. It provides annual awards to U.S. nonprofit conservation organizations working alongside their peers in other countries. Many of the recipient organizations concentrate their activities on “biological hotspots” – areas rich in plant and animal life at risk of imminent destruction.

The DWCF mission resonates with guests who visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, now a AAA Four-Diamond rated resort hotel that was designed with environmentally-conscious guests in mind.

“Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge demonstrates the importance of understanding our guests,” said Kevin Myers, vice president of resort operations at Walt Disney World Resort. “We knew when we built Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, there was a segment of guests with a passion for the environment who would want to stay in a resort hotel whose design focused on animals, culture and conservation in addition to having amenities traditionally associated with a deluxe hotel.”

Funds raised from guests at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge have gone toward important DWCF efforts around the world, from protecting lions in Africa to projects closer to home, including efforts to protect the Northern Jaguar in Mexico and last year’s rapid response grants to rehabilitate thousands of sea turtles along Florida’s Gulf Coast that were affected by a winter cold snap.

Myers points out that a commitment to conservation and the environment extends to each of the 24 resort hotels Walt Disney World Resort. All are certified Green Lodges by the Florida Green Lodging Program.

That commitment to the environment in lodging and the especially strong conservation themes that run through Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge are all part of an environmental legacy handed down by Walt Disney himself.

In fact, during the grand opening ceremonies for Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge ten years ago, the late Roy E. Disney remarked, “They [Walt Disney and Roy O. Disney] would have been thrilled with what has been created here and would have thought it a wonderfully appropriate addition to their company.”

“A lot of young people think the future is closed to them, that everything has been done. This is not so. There are still plenty of avenues to be explored.” – Walt Disney

Next week, my baby boy will graduate from high school. This is a bitter-sweet time for me as I realize that the long chapter in my life of raising three children is coming to an end. Still, I look forward to what he will become and how he has his whole future ahead of him to make of it what he will. Feeling so nostalgic of the past and yet looking forward to the future reminds me of a great man who invested in the future of the youth of the 1950s; one in particular.

Walt Disney was what people have referred to as a “nostalgic futurist.” He absolutely treasured the past, which you can see every time you visit Main Street USA or Frontierland; but he was also very concerned about tomorrow. In his latter years, he became increasingly interested in preparing the next generation for the future. He and his brother, Roy, invested money in schools like CalArts, but his conviction to this was much more hands-on than donating money to schools.

In fact,Walt was so interested in trying to help the youth of the 1950s succeed in the future, that he called the Drama teacher at Santa Monica High School and asked her for the names of promising students in the graduating class. She gave him the name of Ken Wales.Walt personally invited Ken Wales to come and be his guest at the studio. For an entire week, Ken met, worked, and ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner with Walt Disney. Walt mentored Ken, showing him everything about filmmaking.

Today, Ken says that he learned a valuable lesson from Walt and that was “that we should not merely dream big – we should dream beautifully.” In How to Be Like Walt, by Pat Williams, Ken is quoted as saying that “Walt’s films are timeless because they are full of imagination, values, warmth and delight.”

After spending the week together, Walt awarded Ken with the first Walt Disney four-year scholarship to study filmmaking at USC. Ken graduated with honors from the School of Cinema at The University of Southern California. He has had a very successful career and has continued to pay forward the investment by teaching upcoming filmmakers.

Basically, what Walt gave Ken was a headstart on a bright, successful future. But this wasn’t just a headstart. Walt invested his time and energy into something he truly believed in. The gift isn’t always in what you know, but your ability and willingness to share it with others. Ken was very appreciative to Walt, and they remained friends for years to come.

As my son graduates, I think of what a dream it must have been for Ken’s parents to have someone like Walt Disney invest in their son’s future. I wish every child could have someone thoughtfully helping them along in accomplishing their goals for the future. Knowing absolutely nothing about astronomy, I have actually been Josh’s student as he shares his interest in space with me.

Walt had a gift to mentor, teach, train and coach young people toward the success of the future of our world. I wish that everyone who possesses a vast knowledge of a particular subject would take Walt’s lead and mentor a student. Walt involved himself in the lives of people; he lived for the next generation.

For my son, Josh, I will share the advice Ken learned through his wonderful experience with Walt. Don’t merely dream big – dream beautifully! I love you so much, son. Congratulations!

NETWORK SERIES

ONE HOUR

“G.C.B.” (“Good Christian Belles”) (ABC — midseason)

The soap returns to Dallas in this wicked new drama that shows that you can go home again… but only if you’re ready to face the sins of your past.

Amanda Vaughn (Leslie Bibb), once the ultimate high school “mean girl,” is forced to return home in disgrace after her marriage ends in scandal. Amanda is nothing like the girl she was 20 years ago, but as her old classmates reacquaint themselves with the new Amanda, will her home town welcome her with open arms or seek revenge? No one in this town is a saint, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a heart. As Amanda and her teenage kids try to adjust to their new lives, the ladies from her past alternate between sympathy and scheming.

“G.C.B.” stars Leslie Bibb (“Iron Man”) as Amanda Vaughn, Kristin Chenoweth (“Pushing Daisies”) as Carlene Cockburn, Annie Potts (“Law And Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Joan of Arcadia”) as Gigi Stopper, Jennifer Aspen (“Rodney”) as Sharon Peacham, Miriam Shor (“Swingtown” “Damages”) as Cricket Caruth-Reilly, Marisol Nichols (“24”) as Heather Cruz, Brad Beyer (“Jericho”) as Zack Peacham, Mark Deklin (“Lone Star”) as Blake Reilly and David James Elliott (“JAG”) as Ripp Cockburn.

The pilot is written by Robert Harling and executive-produced and directed by Alan Poul. “Good Christian Belles” is produced by ABC Studios.

“MISSING” (ABC — midseason)

Becca Winstone (Ashley Judd) learns that her son, Michael, disappears while studying abroad, and it’s a race against time when she travels to Europe to track him down. A surprising turn of events reveals just how far one mother will go to protect her family. Exotic locations and thrilling twists will keep you riveted in “Missing.”

How far would you go to save the only thing you have left in the world? At 8 years old, Michael watched as his father, CIA Agent Paul Winstone, was murdered. Now 10 years later, Paul’s wife, Becca, is faced with the reality of her son growing up. When Michael is afforded the opportunity to study abroad, his mother reluctantly agrees it’s time to let him go. Just a few weeks into his trip Michael disappears, and Becca immediately suspects foul play. When she arrives in Rome, she begins piecing together the clues left behind. It isn’t long before the kidnappers realize they’ve picked a fight with the wrong woman. Becca Winstone has a secret of her own — before Paul’s death, she was also a lethal CIA Agent. But if she wants to find her son alive, Becca will have to rely on old friends and reopen old wounds. Her resourcefulness, skill and determination will be put to the test – but a mother’s love knows no limits.

“ONCE UPON A TIME” (ABC — fall)

From the inventive minds of “Lost” executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis comes a bold new imagining of the world, where fairy tales and the modern-day are about to collide. And they all lived happily ever after – or so everyone was led to believe. Emma Swan knows how to take care of herself. She’s a 28-year-old bail bonds collector who’s been on her own ever since she was abandoned as a baby. But when the son she gave up years ago finds her, everything starts to change. Henry is now 10 years old and in desperate need of Emma’s help. He believes that Emma actually comes from an alternate world and is Snow White and Prince Charming’s missing daughter.

According to his book of fairytales, they sent her away to protect her from the Evil Queen’s curse, which trapped the fairytale world forever, frozen in time, and brought them into our modern world. Of course Emma doesn’t believe a word, but when she brings Henry back to Storybrooke, she finds herself drawn to this unusual boy and his strange New England town. Concerned for Henry, she decides to stay for a while, but she soon suspects that Storybrooke is more than it seems. It’s a place where magic has been forgotten, but is still powerfully close… where fairytale characters are alive, even though they don’t remember who they once were. The epic battle for the future of all worlds is beginning, but for good to win, Emma will have to accept her destiny and fight like hell.

“Once Upon a Time” stars Ginnifer Goodwin (“Big Love”) as Snow White/Sister Mary Margaret, Jennifer Morrison (“House MD”) as Emma Swan, Robert Carlyle (“The Full Monty,” “Trainspotting,” “SGU Stargate Universe”) as Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold, Lana Parrilla as Evil Queen/Regina, Jamie Dornan as Sheriff Graham, Jared Gilmore (“Mad Men”) as Henry, Josh Dallas as Prince Charming/John Doe and Raphael Sbarge as Jiminy Cricket/Archie.

“REVENGE” (ABC — fall)

Wealth, beauty and status define the people in this town, but one woman is willing to destroy everyone for the sake of revenge.

Emily Thorne (Emily Van Camp) is new to the Hamptons. She’s met some of her wealthy neighbors, has made a few new friends and seemingly blends into the town. But something is a little odd about a young girl living in a wealthy town all on her own. The truth is that Emily isn’t exactly new to the neighborhood. In fact, this was once her old neighborhood, until something bad happened that ruined her family and their reputation. Now Emily is back, and she’s returned to right some of those wrongs in the best way she knows how – with a vengeance.

“Revenge” stars Madeleine Stowe (“We Were Soldiers,” “The Last of the Mohicans”) as Victoria Grayson, Emily Van Camp (“Brothers & Sisters,” “Everwood”) as Emily Thorne, Gabriel Mann (“The Bourne Identity”) as Nolan Ross, Henry Czerny (“Mission: Impossible,” “Clear and Present Danger”) as Conrad Grayson, Ashley Madekwe (“Secret Diary of a Call Girl”) as Ashley Davenport, Nick Wechsler (“Roswell”) as Jack Porter, Josh Bowman (“Prowl”) as Daniel Grayson, Christa B. “THE RIVER” (ABC — midseason)

“The River” follows the story of wildlife expert and TV personality Emmet Cole. Emmet set course around the world with his wife, Tess, and son, Lincoln, while filming what would become one of the most popular shows in television. After he goes missing deep in the Amazon, his family, friends and crew set out on a mysterious and deadly journey to find him.

Famed explorer Dr. Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood) went looking for magic deep in the uncharted Amazon and never returned. The shocking truth about his disappearance is out there, somewhere, just waiting to be discovered. To the millions of kids who grew up watching his nature show, Dr. Cole was a hero. To his own son, Lincoln (Joe Anderson), he was more of an enigma. Now, six months after he vanished, Lincoln is finally ready to bury the past when Dr. Cole’s emergency beacon suddenly goes off. At the urging of his mother, Tess (Leslie Hope), Lincoln reluctantly joins her on a search for his father. To fund the rescue, they agree to let Dr. Cole’s cagey ex-producer, Clark (Paul Blackthorne), film the mission documentary-style. The mixed crew of old friends and new acquaintances includes the sexy and resourceful Lena (Eloise Mumford), loyal mechanic Emilio (Daniel Zacapa) and lethal bodyguard Captain Kurt Brynildson (Thomas Kretschmann).

After leaving the White House, the power consultant opened her own firm, hoping to start a new chapter — both professionally and personally — but she can’t seem to completely cut ties with her past. Slowly it becomes apparent that her staff, who specialize in fixing the lives of other people, can’t quite fix the ones closest at hand — their own.

They’re still here — they just smell like pomegranate body wash now. Meet Will (Mather Zickel). His evolved, sensitive nature is why his awesome wife, Theresa (Teri Polo), married him. But Will and his friends find themselves wondering — in a world of Axe ads and manscaping — what does it really mean to be a guy anymore? Will is more interested in finding the perfect gift for his son Nathan’s (Jake Johnson) 13th birthday than in doing his job selling insurance; sensitive soul Craig (Christopher Moynihan) still pines for his college ex, Lisa; and Kenny (Dan Fogler) clamps down on his anger and asks himself, “What would Tobey Maguire do?,” when his ex, Brenda (Amanda Detmer), starts seeing a guy (Henry Simmons) who is everything he’s not and much better looking. First Look: Cars 2 State Farm Commercial

First Look: Cars 2 State Farm Commercial

In this State Farm commercial, Mater, Finn McMissile and Holly Shiftwell from Disney/Pixar’s CARS 2 movie, are talking about completing missions. Mater causes a mishap and a State Farm agent character, Sara Safestreet, shows up to show how we have you protected. The State Farm Pitties clean up the mess and show that State Farm an State Farm agents are there to take care of you.

http://www.statefarm.com

State Farm is sponsoring Disney/Pixar’s “Cars 2” animated flick with a promotion called “Agents on a Mission.” The program features interactive experiences and something like 18,000 prizes, including a new Cadillac SRX.

The second film in a franchise that will probably have more sequels than spaces on a Wal-Mart parking lot involves the hero car Lightning McQueen competing in the World Grand Prix with his pickup truck pal Mater. The film takes the vehicles to big cities around the world, with a secret-agent subplot.

One element of the promotion includes a 30-second spot commercial called “Pitties” (as in people working in a racing pit-stop) that is thematically tied to the movie: it carries the message that you can’t always be ready for the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune — but State Farm agents are. The ad, via DDB-Chicago, uses characters from the movie with a State Farm pit crew. It breaks May 24 on “American Idol”‘s season finale, with a pre-show cinema campaign in select theatres beginning on June 10.

State Farm will also back the film with a 30-city “Agents on a Mission” tour that centers on life-sized versions of the film’s “car-acters.” Visitors to the events can pretend to be special agents (this is all tied to the film’s secondary story line wherein the pickup truck character gets pulled into an espionage mission by a British secret service guy voiced by Michael Caine) and participate in an online promotional push. There are also onsite games.

Promotion participants will be able to access special agent-“confidential” information and become eligible to unlock one of 18,000 prizes ranging from night vision goggles to a new Caddie crossover.

Retail elements have State Farm agents in the U.S. and Canada giving such stuff to “Agents on a Mission” recruits and distributing special agent ID/decoder cards and other merchandise at their local offices. Once consumers get an agent ID card they can play online games and puzzles that let them use faux security, surveillance and communication devices in order to complete missions.

Finally, State Farm will be a presenting sponsor at the movie’s June 18 premiere in Hollywood.

There are many Disney blogs I read daily like Chip and Co, but there’s one I always look forward in my RSS Reader called Tours Departing Daily, which is different than many Disney sites, because it’s a photography blog focusing on Disneyland Resort (my second home).

The three photographers- Kevin Crone, Michaela Hansen and Matthew Hansen use a technique called High Dynamic Range or HDR.  This means there are multiple shots put together to give the picture more range of color similar to what the human eye sees rather than just the typical camera.

Can you recognize where their website name came from?

I love my daily Disneyland picture- each one brings up a memory or thought about a trip there and also gets me excited about my next trip (under 200 days!).  They also do trivia and giveaway contests on their Facebook page.  I haven’t won any of their prints yet, but I really want one!

Even before I understood what HDR was, I knew these pictures had a different quality about them and I don’t think I can even begin to appreciate the extra time they spend editing each photo so they have more of a realistic look to feel like I’m there.

They did a big project back at Christmas that is still enjoyable to watch any time of year- a time lapse video to music of Disneyland at Christmas!

Hope you enjoy this one as much as I do!

“Fake” Disney theme park closes its gates

Disney-style characters are found all over the Shijingshan Amusement Park in China, but owners claim they are different.

Deputy general manager, Yin Zhiqiang, said: “The characters in our park just look a little bit similar to theirs. But the faces, clothes, sizes and appearances are different.”

They said that their characters look Chinese and meant for it to be that way.  A sign even recognizes that they are not Disney, “Disney is too far, so please come to Shijingshan.”
But Snow White is seen as the ticket gate to the park and Sleeping Beauty is found with 7 dwarf-like characters.
Earlier this month, the park was bustling and busy with visitors, but since then the characters and banner have been taken down as talks with Disney have commenced.  Disney released a statement,
“Disney values and protects its intellectual property vigorously and takes reports of suspected infringement very seriously.”
Workers were seen taking down the Sleeping Beauty statue, gates are closed and parking lots are empty while they are in negotiations.
