Disneyworld Planning 101 – Discounts

Disneyworld Planning 101 – Discounts

Everyone loves a Discount when planning their Disneyworld vacation. I for one am quite thrifty when booking my dream vacation year after year. In case you didn’t know we goto Disney every year and have been doing that since I was much much younger. We hunt all over the internet looking for deals, discounts, special offers, you name it. While some sites are legit and do offer Disney Discounts, others try to scam you into buying a book, or access to a special website.

For those of us who have been to Disney many many times and have spent countless hours researching website after website for the beloved Disney Discount this article goes out to you.

I just wanted to share with you my C&C Ohana (Family) so of the things I have learned over the years to obtain the treasured Disney Discount. And before you ask no special book or secret website access is needed.

  • Tip #1 – Mousesavers – I have been using the Mousesavers Newsletter for quite a long time. Not many people know this but they are partly the reason I got into doing a Disney Website. I would read their Discounts and News stories month after month and thought how it would be nice to have a website where people could come and read about this anytime they like. Viola! Chip and Company was born.

Signup for the Mousesavers Newsletter and you to can learn about all the Disney Discounts they were able to track down. I can’t tell you how many times a month people email me asking if I could forward their newsletter. Don’t ask me why..

  • Tip #2 – Use a travel Agent – Unless you live on the computer and have firefox open and about 20+ tabs running with one of them being a Disney Website (I am talking about myself here..I have 23 tabs running at the moment) your going to miss out on the Disney Special Offers that are released. Presently I am waiting on Disney to release free dining or discounted room for October of 2011 when we take our trip back home.

So with that in mind you don’t have to wait around and check the website daily if you have a Disney Authorized Travel Agent. They will do it for you with NO COST TO YOU. Let me say that again in case you missed it. NO COST TO YOU! That’s right a Disney Travel Agent is free.. There is no charge for their service and most times many of the various companies will give you a little bonus for booking with them. Try using this link if you need to find one.

This year’s vacation I am using the wonderful Chris from Chip and Company. She signed on with Pixie Vacations and is doing it part time till she passes the bar in NC. Last year we used Small World Vacations and loved the service we received from our agent Dawn who happened to live in Greensboro with us!

You can’t swing a stick without hitting a Disney Travel Agency. This article isn’t a review of the agencies so your going to have to go out and do some research on who you would like to book with. I just know by experience that Pixie Vacations has been great and so was Small World. Take that for what it’s worth.

  • Tip # 3 – Undercover Tourists – In the past when we have needed just park tickets I scoured the internet looking for them. I looked on ebay, various ticketing websites, and even thought about using one of those companies that resell used tickets. None of those options really appealed to me. I just wanted to save some money on tickets without all that hassle. Until one day I stumbled across Undercover Tourists! I did some research on the Disney Forums and found that everyone loved them. So from then on when I have needed tickets or when a friend would ask about tickets I would just send them there.

This is not to say that Maple Leaf Tickets or some of the other sites out there are bad. I had a good experience with UT and usually when I do I lock in and send my business their way.

  • Tip #4 – Chip and Company – Ok so I had to plug the C&C site. Like most travel agents I hear about Disneyworld Discounts when they do, sometimes sooner. Over the years of doing the website I have made many connections in the “BIZ” and many people send emails to me and let me know about special offers coming down the pipe. I gladly welcome all mail and love getting emails from people who read the site.

That being said if a Disney Discount is out there I am all over it. One of the best things to do is if you don’t want to visit the website daily which I couldn’t image why you wouldn’t. Sign up for my Daily Newsletter and have the website delivered to your Inbox. All the articles I post every day get sent out for your viewing pleasure.

  • Tip #5 – Use Google Alerts – Not many people other than my staff know this but Chip and Company is a Google News Source for Disney News. Every day Google scours our sites for Disney News stories and posts them on as Google Alerts. That is one of the secrets on how C&C was able to go from a few thousand visitors a month to almost a quarter of a million viewers a month and growing. Google Alerts is a powerful tool that you can use to find Disney Discounts and Offers.

All you have to do is goto Google Alerts Website and configure an Alert for Disneyworld Discounts, or Disneyworld Offers, and Google will scour the net each day and then email you the results. It is a very easy tool to use. I will say this though like any webcrawler it will find some junkie sites so be careful. If you have never heard of the site or if you are not happy with the link it shows you don’t click on it. It’s just like doing a Google Search but on more of a daily release basis.

Well that is all I have time for today. I know this article is longer than what I usually write. As my Disneyworld vacation gets closer stay tuned for more Disneyworld Planning 101’s.

If you have ways to get a Disney Discount let us know in the comment section below.

The Evolution of a Walt Disney World Traveler

The Evolution of a Walt Disney World Traveler

I started my trips to the Walt Disney World Resort as a baby. Being the 3rd child, pictures are far and few between and exact records are missing, but I can guarantee I visited the parks before I turned 3. And, I’m not positive that I can say the parks because EPCOT Center opened when I was 1, but I’m guessing that it was open for my first visit.

During middle school, we lived in South Florida, so we made the drive up a few times. Every time we visited, I ran through the parks as fast as my parents would follow. I have proof that we rode Dumbo, and I guarantee we rode my childhood favorites – Delta Dreamflight and Horizons (sadly, both long gone), but I only have vague memories.

Then, in high school, I was lucky enough to visit with my high school marching band. We participated in a SpectroMagic Parade, which allowed us into the Utilidors to get into position for the parade. Cameras weren’t allowed, so those memories are foggy, at best. That was definitely an experience I wish I hadn’t taken for granted. We spent those 2 days at the parks- one at the Magic Kingdom while the castle was in full cake décor and the other at EPCOT, exploring and getting soaked in the fountains.

My trips became more regular in college. Friends and I would frequent over schools breaks, normally for only a single day. We knew how to conquer the Magic Kingdom in 1 single day. While we once got last minute lunch reservations at Cinderella’s Royal Table, we normally just picked up snacks throughout the day: couldn’t miss that much time to stop to eat! We barreled through the park like it was our personal playground. Up until our last trip prior to the baby, we still followed the same game plan – straight to Tomorrowland and work the way to the left.

Then the baby came. What an amazing experience to witness the parks through the eyes of an infant. We didn’t know where our fussy baby went. Even teething didn’t bother him at the Happiest Place on Earth. Together, we watched our first rope drop ceremonies and enjoyed a much slower pace than I could have previously imagined. At the Magic Kingdom, we headed directly to Peter Pan and enjoyed that and everything that Fantasyland has to offer. Riding the big rides, which had always been our “mission,” was no longer as pressing a desire than letting our new son enjoy Mickey’s Philharmagic.

Now, I have indulged myself into the learning more about Disney magic. I read the trivia books, listen to podcasts (that I didn’t know existed a year ago), and peruse Disney blogs and websites on a regular basis. My husband mentioned that he was curious as to how our trip will change now that I’ve learned so much. After processing that thought, I realized – after years of trying to jam pack our days full of rides and attractions, I want to take a step back. I want to walk slowly down Main Street to notice the lamps changing as you pass through time. I want to meet all of the “characters” of Main Street U.S.A. I want to search for the names of the Imagineers in all of the details of the parks – from stores to rides to restaurant tables.

My next trip, I’ll enjoy my son’s stroller naps so that I can explore the details left for us like hidden treasures. I won’t feel sad if I miss a 2nd ride on Space Mountain if I get to run into PUSH, the robotic garbage can ‘cleaning up’ Tomorrowland.

The best part is that I know my trips will to continue to evolve. I wonder what I’ll discover next!

Oldies But Goodies – The Ride Designed With Us In Mind!!

Oldies But Goodies – The Ride Designed With Us In Mind!!

Sure, there aren’t any loops, no 60 mph takeoffs, and no 13 story drops but The Great Movie Ride is still one of my favorites. A lot of Oldies feel the same way for lots of reasons. A lot of the films represented in the attraction were released in the thirties, forties, and early fifties making Oldies the only group of people who saw them in an actual theater the first time around. My fellow Oldies may not relish loops and drops but they love to reminisce about their younger days and this attraction allows them to do just that. Another advantage is that it is a pretty mellow attraction allowing those Seniors who are really SENIOR to fully participate.

The Oldies get to pass through scenes from films like Busby Berkeley‘s 1933 film, Footlight Parade, and visit John Wayne and Edward G. Robinson in scenes from their movies. It gets more contemporary (but there are no scenes from Saw or Harry Potter) bringing in films from the Indiana Jones and Alien era. The attraction covers a large time frame with a primary focus pre 1980. It’s fun for everyone but extra fun for those of us in our 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.

There is an awful lot of “hidden” stuff (not just Mickey’s) in this attraction from the license plate on the gangster car, 021-429, which is the actual date of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (February 14, 1929) to hieroglyphs of Donald Duck serving cheese to Pharaoh Mickey in the Well of Souls scene. These are just a couple but if you want to read more I might suggest The Hidden Magic of Walt Disney World by Susan Veness, an excellent book.

As I mentioned to my fellow Oldies in the article’s title, it seems as though this attraction was designed “With Us In Mind” but it doesn’t take an Oldie to appreciate what truly superior film making was before computer graphics took over (sorry Deeks), eliminating the need to imagine. I hope that you will take some time on your next trip to experience this under appreciated attraction. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

New Year’s Disney “Days”

My husband and I have a long-standing New Year’s tradition that began during our college years. After a holiday week filled with shopping, family, and birthday celebrations, we’re ready to spend a quiet night in on New Year’s Eve. But really, if a quiet night in is good, two are better. Let me introduce you to the “Days.” The year-end “Days” are an embarrassing display of sloth and gluttony filled with movie-watching and junk food. A theme must first be chosen. It can be a movie genre, an actor, or a made-for-television movie series; the more creative the better. Next, actual days must be selected. Once the movies have been procured (ideally twenty hours or so of play time) and the days have been blocked out on the calendar, a trip to the grocery store is in order. Hot h’orderves are a favorite of ours along with cheese, crackers, and anything else that falls into the category of snack food. Lastly, the furniture must be rearranged for optimal lounging. Pajamas are encouraged, email is discouraged, and the phone must not be answered.

So to get your started on your own Disney “Days”, I thought I would offer up Disney film suggestions for a few different themes.

Leading South African Educator Pays Central Florida a Visit

Leading South African Educator Pays Central Florida a Visit

One of South Africa’s leading educators recently paid a special visit to Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Animal Kingdom Lodge to share her inspirational story of perseverance and express gratitude for the ongoing support of several Central Floridians.

Eleven years ago, Nomusa Zikhali established the internationally-renowned Nkomo Primary School in rural South Africa with 60 children (ranging in age from five to 18) sitting beneath four trees. With nurturing over the years, the school grew beyond its humble beginnings into a campus of several buildings and classrooms serving more than 800 students. At least half of these children have lost their parents from HIV/AIDS and rely on the school for support.

Zikhali attributes part of the school’s success to the kindness and generosity of Disney and several Central Florida students and teachers. During the summer of 2009, Disney VoluntEARS traveled to South Africa along with several teachers from Palm Lake Elementary School to help with school improvement projects , curriculum enhancements and a hot meal program funded by  the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund.

Contributions from Palm Lake also included books, school uniforms, shoes and enough funding to build a water collection system to provide fresh water directly to the school. Prior to that improvement, students were required to walk several miles to haul water from the nearest river. As a result of the group’s hard work, Nkomo Primary School was recognized last year by the South Africa National Board of Education as the most beautiful school in the province.

During her Central Florida trip, Zikhali was pleasantly surprised with a $10,000 donation from Walt Disney World Resort to continue her school’s progress. The South African teacher hopes to use the money for two additional classrooms.

“The generosity of Palm Lake and Disney means the world to me and my student learners,” Zikhali said. “Our classrooms are so full; we are running out of room. This donation means our school can grow, hire more teachers and continue to provide for children that deserve the opportunity to learn.”

As part of her two-week visit, Zikhali also spent some time with students and teachers from Palm Lake Elementary School, volunteered at Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida and accompanied Disney’s animal care experts who visited children at the Florida Hospital for Children.

Local Children Spend Day at Epcot With Governor-Elect Rick Scott

Local Children Spend Day at Epcot With Governor-Elect Rick Scott

Enjoying Epcot as the guests of incoming Florida Governor-Elect Rick Scott, approximately a dozen Central Florida kids were treated to a memorable day on Dec. 27 filled with magical moments. The special visit was part of Scott’s Forging a Path to Prosperity Appreciation Tour, a seven-city tour of the state leading up to the inauguration in January.

The kids, ranging in age from 5-16, were all from Frontline Outreach, Orlando’s oldest outreach ministry to children focusing on urban early-childhood education and leadership development.

Upon arrival, Scott and the children were formally welcomed to the park during a special ceremony at Epcot’s Italy pavilion.

“When I think of Epcot and when I look out at these kids, I’m reminded of something Walt Disney once said, ‘All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them,’” said Dan Cockerell, vice president of Epcot. “Epcot is all about discovery – From thrill rides and attractions, to exhibits, entertainment, incredible food and treasures from around the world, there’s a lot of ground to cover and a lot of fun to have. It was an absolute thrill to welcome these children to our park.”

The kids had the chance to meet some of Disney’s most popular characters at a special meet-and-greet just for them.

Scott then joined the children for a ride on Epcot’s popular Soarin’ attraction. Lt. Governor-Elect Jennifer Carroll also treated some of the special guests to hot chocolate at the American Adventure pavilion.

Frontline Outreach provides quality afterschool activities for kids, including a “Read and Succeed” learning program, as well as recreational opportunities like swimming and basketball.

Meet-n-Greet with All Seven Dwarfs

Meet-n-Greet with All Seven Dwarfs

The greatest thing happened to my husband and me at this year’s Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. We got to meet ALL SEVEN DWARFS!!!

We really enjoy going to MVMCP each year. It is tradition that our first night at Walt Disney World is spent at the celebration. We love the decorations, the snow and certainly the hot cocoa. We also really enjoy being able to ride lots of rides because of the shorter lines.

Over the years we have had great experiences and we have taken advantage of many different meet-n-greet opportunities throughout the park.  But, we have never before had an opportunity to see all of the seven dwarfs together at one time. Not to even mention being able to take pictures with them.

Our kids got tired at around 11:00 and headed back to the Contemporary to relax. We hung on like the die-hard Disney troopers we are. We rode some more rides and walked around and did some shopping. When we rounded the corner by the skyway in Fantasyland, my husband said, “Oh my gosh – look!” and I turned swiftly to see a long line of people and these precious, sweet, smiling characters. I almost fell over myself trying to get to them.

For many years, my husband and I have been known as Dopey and Grumpy. We have Dopey and Grumpy collectibles and shirts and we are pretty true to character (me more than he, actually – as I am a lot more dopey than he is grumpy).

We were so excited to get these photographs we could not WAIT to show everyone. Our only regret was that the kids weren’t there for the picture; otherwise, that would have undoubtedly been our Christmas card picture this year.

What a special treat it was for us to have this wonderful opportunity this year. I sure hope Disney brings these guys back next year.
