Bruce Willis Stops by Hollywood Studios

Bruce Willis posed with Minnie Mouse and Goofy at Hollywood Studios with the famed mouse-eared water tower (dubbed the “Earrfel Tower”) in the background.

The water tower was inspired by Disney’s landmark water tower that has been an icon of The Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, for many years.

Disney Union Agreement Reached

Disney Union Agreement Reached

A majority of Walt Disney World’s largest union coalition approved their contract after months of negotiations.

President of the Services Trades Council, a group of the 6 unions which make up about 20,800 full-time employees has confirmed the results.

Leaders of 2 of the unions in the STC are decrying the contracts, blaming Disney for dividing the unions.  They had urged their members to reject the contracts, but a majority made of the other 4 unions voted in favor of the new contract.

One of the opposing union leaders, Unite Here! Local 362 president Eric Clinton, said “People forgot from the other unions that Disney is the one we should be taking on, not each other.”

“We feel very strongly that this was an extremely democratic vote,” Raynor said, pointing to the turnout and size of the majority as evidence that the union’s membership had spoken.

The vote passed 4,987-2,099.

Terms are similar to the contract rejected last October:

It calls for $650 in combined bonuses for all full-time, non-tipped employees and, for workers not already at the top of their pay scales, annual raises of between 3 percent and 4 percent over the next three years.

The biggest difference in the new contract: Full-time, non-tipped workers earning $8.50 an hour or less would get an extra $100 bonus.

Wednesday with Walt: Simplicity at Its Best

Wednesday with Walt: Simplicity at Its Best

There was an article printed in the March, 1941 issue of Ladies Home Journal entitled, “Mr. and Mrs. Disney.” Before you ask, yes I do! The article talks about Walt’s life growing up and how he and Lillian met, and talks about Walt as a person. One paragraph in particular says:

“Although Disney is generally a modest fellow, he has made something of a cult of his simplicity. He drives to work in a blue coupe and was full of apologies when it leaked out that he also has a bigger car in which a chauffeur sometimes drives him around. He once cut off his mustache after reading in a magazine that a mustache is a sign of conceit, and although he grew it again it is this point of view that prompted his Uncle Robert to say, “I give Walt credit for holding himself just like a real sensible fellow would. He hasn’t swelled up a bit.”

Walt Disney was down to earth. He wasn’t as he said “highbrowed” and he did not have a fondness for people who were. Apologizing for the chauffeured limousine surprised me a bit.  Way back in my teens, I started telling people that one day I would have a Volkswagen Beetle with a chauffeur because I dislike driving so much; not that there is anything wrong with a VW Bug mind you but I was trying to emphasize the lack of the need for a limo. Hmm, that sounds familiar.

Although I never met him, Walt has been one of the most powerful influences on my life. I study Walt because to me there are few more deserving, considering the impact made on my own life. If you are reading this blog, I am betting that he and his work have greatly influenced your life as well. Disney people are special people. When they give the personality test to determine our personality types, one category should be the Disney personality*.

Walt Disney was genuine. He was a man who just wanted to get up and get at it. He was driven by thoughts and ideas, not by the materialistic things in life; although he was very blessed after hard times early on. Walt gave the world happiness and entertainment; and in return, the world gave him wealth, awards and favor. He was not changed by it, though, and I admire the integrity of the man.

He brought good natured, wholesome entertainment to everyone in the world. If those of us who share the Disney way of life keep in mind what he stood for, and share that light with the generations to come, then the world will continue to be touched by Walt’s magic and the charm of simple things.

Walt Disney was simplicity at its best!

Missing Star Tours? Have no fear. Here’s some classic attraction footage as you prime yourself for the opening of Star Tours 2: The Adventures Continue!

The Disney Parks are plan to relaunch the new and improved tours on the following dates:

May 10th 2011 in Disneyland in Anaheim AND May 17th 2011 in Disney World in Orlando

I’m planing to be there opening day and hope to see you there!

This is the full ride film played on Star Tours at Disneyland Park at the Disneyland Resort, Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort, Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris.

This is a post production copy of the Star Tours ride film before it was sent to Disney for further visual and sound editing. Two of the most noticible things that confirm this is the bright tint and shade of yellow on the objects that show up on the screen as well as the dialouge in the video is different than what is played on the ride.

Star Tours utilizes a Rediffusion Simulation (Later owned by Thomson-CSF) hydraulic motion base cabin featuring 4 degrees of freedom. The trade name for this simulator is Advanced Technology Leisure Application Simulator, or ATLAS. The Rediffusion ‘Leisure’ simulator was originally developed for a much simpler show in Canada called “Tour of the Universe”, where it featured a single entrance/exit door in the rear of the cabin and a video projector.

The film is front projected onto the screen from a 70mm film projector located beneath the cockpit barrier. George Lucas has mentioned that the next generation of the attraction will feature digital high definition video and motion bases capable of up to 6 degrees of freedom.

Disney’s Dreamers Academy Attendance Jumps in 2011; More than 100 Teens Going to Walt Disney World Resort March 3-6

Disney's Dreamers Academy Attendance Jumps in 2011; More than 100 Teens Going to Walt Disney World Resort March 3-6

The 2011 Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine continues a mission to annually bring together 100 high school students who want to ignite their lives, dreams and passions. However, the March 3-6 event at Walt Disney World Resort also will serve as a “make-up class” for 13 teens selected for the 2010 Academy which they were unable to attend due to winter-weather travel cancellations.

Combined with 100 high school students from 22 states and the District of Columbia selected for 2011, the class register this year will have 113 names on it, making it the largest in the four years of the program.

The program also has grown in other ways, including the participation of Essence Magazine for the first time.

Essence Communications President Michelle Ebanks said, “Essence is closely aligned with Disney and Steve Harvey in supporting the mission of Disney’s Dreamers Academy and its commitment to positively impacting our youth. Disney’s Dreamers Academy is helping teens take steps in the right direction, and we want to be right there with the students, both encouraging them and sharing their stories.”

Tracey Walters-Powell, executive champion of the program for Disney Parks & Resorts, said, “Disney’s Dreamers Academy is a perfect platform to further the goal, shared by Disney Parks, Essence Communications and – it goes without saying – by Steve Harvey, to inspire children. We are genuinely excited about the possibilities ahead.”

It will be a watershed year as the students, selected from among thousands of applicants across the country, embark on customized itineraries based on their individual interests and aspirations. During hands-on experiences, they will explore a world of career options — from animation, through entrepreneurship, to zoology. They’ll be engaged with motivational speakers, Disney experts and celebrities — each with a special talent and an individual life story.

Participants for the 2011 Disney’s Dreamers Academy class were selected by a distinguished panel of judges including: Steve Harvey; Yolanda Adams (Gospel Music Legend); Angela Burt-Murray (former editor-in-chief, Essence Magazine); Dr. Steve Perry (Education Advocate and CNN commentator); Dalonte Hall (DDA Dreamer, Class of 2010); Terrence J (MTV Personality); Carole Munroe (Director of Media Relations, Disney Parks & Resorts); Tracey Powell (Director of Pricing, Disney Parks & Resorts); Stella Ringer (Marketing Manager, The Coca-Cola Company); Lorraine Robertson (Blogger) and Stephen A. Smith (Broadcaster/Sports Analyst).mong the celebrities for the 2011 Dreamers Academy is musical and theatrical talent, including Raven Simone, Ruben Studdard and Cupid.

“Each year we strive to find young people who may have a will or passion, but may not have the courage to explore their dreams.” Harvey said. “So we hope to unlock the power that will allow them to pursue their hearts’ desires. Walt Disney World, Essence Magazine and I are excited to be a part of these young Dreamers’ experience that will encourage them to bring their dreams to life.”

Disney’s Dreamers Academy is designed so that the teens can be inspired, discover possibilities and prepare for their future. For additional information, visit www.disneysdreamersacademy.com.

Jake and the Never Land Pirates Landing at Disney’s Hollywood Studios as Part of Show Debuting March 4

Jake and the Never Land Pirates Landing at Disney's Hollywood Studios as Part of Show Debuting March 4

Jake and the Never Land Pirates are landing at Disney’s Hollywood Studios March 4, 2011, less than a month after they cast off on their first adventure on Disney Channel as part of the launch of Disney Junior programming designed for 2-to-7-year-old children.

At the Walt Disney World theme park, they are playing a role in “Disney Junior–Live on Stage!”, a theme park show created for young guests. Co-starring roles in the show are played by the cast of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Handy Manny and Little Einsteins — other shows that are part of the Disney Junior schedule.

“Ever since ‘Playhouse Disney–Live on Stage!’ premiered in 2001, it has been a chance for our younger guests to experience their Disney Channel friends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios,” said Dan Fields of Walt Disney Imagineering, the creative director for “Disney Junior–Live on Stage!” “As their circle of TV friends has grown and changed during the years, we’ve endeavored to make sure those new friends are part of their vacation fun, too.”

Like the previous show (“Playhouse Disney–Live on Stage”), “Disney Junior–Live on Stage!” will be presented several times during the theme park day. Guests should check their Times Guide for show times.

Tom Staggs – Overview of Parks & Resorts Report in plain English

If you were the Chairman of WD Parks & Resorts, what would you announce for the coming years? What would you be excited about in regards to what has already been announced? Would you start your Report with bad jokes?

Well, that’s what present Chairman Tom Staggs did as he delved into this Report. What follows are some highlights, along with a comment or two from yours truly:

Tom started with a lame FastPass joke before announcing that it has been a fantastic year. Then he showed a video montage of his first year as Chairman. I’m sure it was riveting!

Then came these statements:

  • The Parks are really well positioned to take advantage of the economic recovery
  • The substantial capital spent on the Parks will create value for investors
  • Guest Experience was identified as the key business for Parks & Resorts

Tom then identified four unique assets and competitive strengths that set Parks & Resorts apart. These are:

  • The Disney Brand
  • Intellectual Properties and creative talent
  • Technology and innovation

He then shared a famous quote from Walt Disney: “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.” He stated that Walt’s drive for innovation is still alive in the present Imagineers. I would have to agree with this as I see many exciting new attractions being built around the world, as well as the fantastic new features of the Disney Dream Cruise Ship. The forth asset mentioned was:

  • The incomparable Cast

Tom then stated that research had shown that people cite interactions with Cast Members ‘as the single biggest factor in their satisfaction and intent to return.’

Hopefully, this will lead to a better relationship between Disney and its Cast Members, with these hard working people getting their due!

Next, three initiatives were announced:

  • Growing established assets
  • Building new businesses
  • Expanding in geographic markets

Tom expanded on these three points by listing many of the Assets of the Disney Company and by outlining the plans for expansion.

He then touched on what has become a hot topic for Disney fans, that being the expanded FastPass initiative. Tom said: “…we are currently developing an innovative system that will, in essence, create a version of FastPass for their (Guests) entire Disney vacations.”

This involves reserving not only Resorts and restaurants, but also times for riding favorite attractions, Meet-and-Greets, plus seats at shows and spectaculars. It’s my view that this could take some of the Magic out of a spontaneous vacation experience, while edging out the common Theme Park attendee in favor of a newly-created elite class. Only time will tell if these initiatives are for the best.

Tom next discussed the Disney Cruise Line, DVC, and off-shore Parks. Most notably, Shanghai Disney. Here is what he had to say about that initiative: “We are well into our blue sky development, and once Shanghai opens in about five years, we know we will have a park that is distinctly Disney,
yet authentically Chinese. Taken as a whole, we believe China is the most exciting opportunity
we’ve had since Walt first bought land in Florida in 1964.”

Bold words. There was so much more to this report than I could include here! But one thing that came across again and again was that no matter what idea was coming, it was going to have this result:

“They (all of the ideas contained in the Report) are right for our brand and for our business, and they will help us create value for our shareholders for many, many years to come.”

I guess the only other question to ask is: Will they create value for the Disney Guest? If you have an opinion on this, please give it in the comment section. We at Chip and Co. would love to hear what you have to say!

Nordstrom and Disney Celebrate 45th Anniversary of ‘It’s A Small World’ With Kid’s Fashion Apparel

Nordstrom and Disney Celebrate 45th Anniversary of 'It's A Small World' With Kid's Fashion Apparel

Nordstrom and Disney Consumer Products (DCP) will celebrate the 45th anniversary of the beloved ‘it’s a small world’ attraction at Disneyland® park with a whimsical collection of stylish children’s apparel, accessories and footwear beginning today. The collection is inspired by world-renowned Disney artist Mary Blair‘s original mid-century artwork created for the attraction, and by Walt Disney’s belief that we are united in our love of children and our dreams of a better tomorrow.

(See below for photos)

Four seasonal collections for newborns, infants and toddlers will hit Nordstrom stores nationwide and nordstrom.com/smallworld throughout 2011, each delivery representing an individual country: ‘Japanese Spring’ launches the line on February 28, followed by ‘Indian Summer’ in June, ‘Scottish Fall’ for September, and ‘Russian Holiday’ in November. Each collection includes items priced from $18 – $169 from collaborators such as Petunia Pickle Bottom, TOMS Shoes, FEED, Trumpette, Baby Nay and Mighty Fine.

“When Disney shared Blair’s original artwork with us from its archives, we were excited about how well it would translate into quality merchandise,” said John Hunt, Nordstrom merchandise manager for infants and toddlers. “We hope our customers will love this art-driven collection as much as we do.”

In 1964, Walt Disney introduced a nine-minute boat ride— It’s a Small World – a Salute to UNICEF—dedicated to children around the world at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. In 1966, the attraction opened at Disneyland and today continues to carry guests past familiar miniature scenes of world’s monuments, animals, birds and children all singing and dancing to the unified tune of “it’s a small world.” Among all of Disney’s theme parks, there is not a moment of the day the song is not played.

“Our creative team here at Disney Consumer Products has always been inspired by the original Small World art and wanted to draw upon the magical story, prints and patterns, and diverse iconography to create this design-driven contemporary children’s collection that brings beauty, meaning and the legacy of ‘it’s a small world,'” said Robert Oberschelp, director, Disney Collections, DCP. “This collection is especially great for gift-giving and keepsakes as the story of Walt Disney’s ‘it’s a small world’ is truly timeless.”

To give back, Nordstrom and Disney are teaming with TOMS Shoes and FEED Projects to offer philanthropic pieces in the collection. TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need, while FEED Projects’ assortment will benefit UNICEF, which was the ride’s original 1964 beneficiary. Funds raised from the sales of FEED’s collection, ‘it’s a small world’ items will enable UNICEF to provide vitamin supplements to children in need. FEED Projects Co-Founder and CEO Lauren Bush will also make a special appearance to help promote the collection at Nordstrom at The Grove in Los Angeles on Wednesday, March 16 from 3:30- 5:00 p.m.

Customers can receive a collectable limited-edition lithograph of Mary Blair’s artwork each season with any purchase from the line (one per customer, while supply lasts). There will also be special Disney character artists drawing at Nordstrom Downtown Seattle on March 19, Nordstrom Pleasanton (Pleasanton, Calif.) on March 20, Nordstrom Oakbrook Center (Oakbrook, Ill.) on March 26 and Nordstrom NorthPark Center (Dallas) on March 27. Further information on in-store events is available at nordstrom.com/smallworld.
