Wednesday with Walt: A Powerful Force

Wednesday with Walt: A Powerful Force

“We share, to a large extent, one another’s fate. We help create those circumstances which favor or challenge us in meeting our objectives and realizing our dreams. There is great comfort and inspiration in this feeling of close human relationships and its bearing on our mutual fortunes – a powerful force to overcome the ‘tough breaks’ which are certain to come to most of us from time to time.” – Walt Disney

Walt Disney had a compassionate and caring heart, and he was a giver by nature. There were many times he went out of his way for someone else. I can’t even recall all of the different examples I have read about his generosity and genuine concern for people; both people he knew and strangers as well.

One of the stories I can remember came from Walt’s secretary, Tommie, who worked for him for almost 9 years. Over time, he had become like a father to her and when she got married, he gave the bride away and even paid for her wedding reception. Walt also did for others by starting a scholarship fund for the children of the Disney employees. He supported numerous charities both financially and in completely hands-on ways, such as filling water glasses and clearing dirty dishes at the benefit he put on annually at the John Tracy Clinic in Los Angeles.

One of the stories that stands out in my mind that particularly captures the spirit of Walt Disney to me was about a little 7-year-old boy who was dying of leukemia.  In June, 1955 the boy’s mother sent a letter to the Disney studios telling Walt how her son had been watching the construction of Disneyland on the Disneyland TV show. She said his only wish was to ride Walt Disney’s train. Walt told his staff that the family would be coming for a visit soon.

When they arrived, Walt was waiting for them. He took the boy in his arms and led the family up the stairs to the train station. They all stood and watched the cranes put the railroad cars onto the tracks; they had just arrived at the park that morning and the engine had not yet been tested.

Walt took the boy into the cab. As the train pulled out of the station on its maiden run, Walt pointed out all the attractions that were being worked on at that time. Along the way, the child gave a few blasts on the steam whistle. When the family was leaving, Walt gave the family a gold-framed piece of original art from Lady and the Tramp. After they left, he ordered his staff not to mention that visit to anyone and, above all, no publicity. Walt’s instructions were obeyed and his act of kindness was never mentioned in public until after his death. I read about this story in How to be like Walt, by Pat Williams and while I was reading it I was thinking that it sounded just like him.

The reason that I and so many other Disney fans care so much about Walt is that he cared so much for others. He was compassionate, sincere and had a huge heart. His life is an example to me every day. It helps to reinforce and remind me of the practice of trying to make better any life that crosses my path that day.

As part of the quote above says, “There is great comfort and inspiration in this feeling of close human relationships”; that is the reason I am a Disney blogger.  Like others who do the same, we have been filled with something magical that we want everyone to know about. I love talking to people about what Disney means to me. I want to help every person to be able to visit Walt Disney World with their families and feel the magic. I know that the magic isn’t only in the parks, but in the hearts of all of us who have grown to love it so much. We want to help Walt with his dream. We feel a loyalty to him for all he did to enrich all of our lives, even long before we were born. And that loyalty is unwavering, even to the extent that I, and at least some other Disney bloggers I know, won’t visit any parks other than Disney parks when we visit Orlando out of a self-imposed sense of respect and loyalty to Walt. Did he ask for it? No, but he deserves it.

The Chip And Company Disney Week In Review For April 11

The Chip And Company Disney Week In Review For April 11

Welcome to the Chip and Company Disney Week In Review for this week. We have tons of news stories and as usual we also present some views from our incredible staff of writers so sit back, relax, and enjoy.

  • Disney made a huge announcement concerning changes to their cruise itineraries for 2012 and Michelle was kind enough to analyze it and put everything together in a  Disney Cruise Line News Breakdown.
  • Once again Disney is demonstrating its concern for the future of our planet and its animal inhabitants and the news is spreading. If you go to Disneynature’s plans to work with the African Wildlife Federation (AWF) to ‘Save The Savanna’ have gone viral you can see what the buzz is all about.
  • Guess what, Disneyland Park will host the World Premiere of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ on May 7th. I don’t think anyone is surprised about that!!!
  • I think that even the non-Royals followers know that Prince William and Kate Middleton are to be wed this month and Disney Family has launched a month long ‘Happily Ever After’ celebration and sweepstakes. You can begin your quest to be a winner here.
  • On September 9-11 Disney will hosting The Florida Project at Walt Disney World. For those of you who are pin collectors this will probably be nirvana so you had better check it out.
  • More news on yet another expansion plan. This week Disney broke ground on the new Shanghai resort yet another opportunity for our friends in Asia to experience the Magic of Disney.
  • For our buddies in Canada, Disney didn’t leave you out this week. The Disney Store launched a Magical new experience when it opened two new stores, one in Mississauga, Ontario and one in Burnaby, British Columbia. Canada’s biggest celebrities were in attendance and a delightful time was had by all.
  • You know something, the Disney Company is incredibly socially aware. They are donating 100% of the ticket proceeds (at $1000 each) from the new Pirates of the Caribbean World Premiere on May 7th to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Well done Disney!!
  • Monsters Inc. fans you are going to have to wait.Disney has pushed back the 3D prequel to one of our favorite Disney/Pixar films to June of 2013 from November of 2012 – ARRGH!!! Check out the new Logo and release date details here.
  • With all of the ‘wedding reality shows’ now on cable I’m sure that many of you are very familiar with David Tutera. This week ‘Inside Disney Weddings’ shared an exclusive interview with David himself.
  • So it’s not just the attractions getting a facelift at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, the cast member costumes will be all new as well. Our resident lover of all things Star Wars, Aljon, lets us see what the New Threads For Star Tours2 Cast Members look like.
  • D23 Members listen up, the Grand Prize has been announced for the Great Disney Scavenger Hunt to be hald May 12-13. O.K. I won’t keep you in suspense – here it is!!

Well, News is News but Views are Views and here at Chip and Company our terrific gang of writers definitely have their views and love to express them. To give you a taste of what we are all about I’ll share a few here.

  • We all know that it gets very HOT at Walt Disney World and nothing can tire you out like excessive heat and humidity. Take the time to explore Natalie’s Strategies For Staying Cool In Walt Disney World and keep yourself comfortable while you are there.
  • Have you ever tried one of the tours at Walt Disney World? Brenda gives us a feel for exactly what happens on one of the more widely attended tours when she answers the question – What Is Disney’s Keys To The Kingdom Tour?
  • Our guy Mike and his cutie pie Princess daughter Sophie love meeting the characters. A lot of us are not big fans of the character meals so Mike and Sophie help us out by telling us who we can meet and where we can meet them. Thanks Mike and Sophie!!

That’s it for this week folks, be sure to stop by Chip and Company to see what else we have to offer and to check out the new site graphics and format. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Classic Disney – Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride

Classic Disney - Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

Based on the Disney film “The Wind in the Willows,” Mr. Toad began whipping riders around in 1971. Passengers were driven through Mr. Toad’s world on runaway “jalopies” that made sudden turns and seemed to drive full speed into obstacles. Luckily, through Disney magic, the obstacles would move just in the nick of time. The ride closed with seemingly no logical explanation in 1998, amid much protest by Disney fans. It was replaced with The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
