Celebrate Earth Day: Recycling while in Walt Disney World

Celebrate Earth Day: Recycling while in Walt Disney World

I frequently vacation in Walt Disney World.  With so many visits to Disney World, I begin noticing things that I would not have typically noticed otherwise.  For instance, upon check in at any of the Walt Disney Resorts I began noticing the HUGE packets of various brochures detailing the park hours, park maps, resort map, resort activities and on and on given to me.  Knowing that I have a phone application detailing the park hours and no need for the other information given upon check-in, now I ask that the cast member keep the information packet for the next guest as I really will not be browsing all of the documents.  I always feel a bit ungrateful when I ask that they just keep their packet they were presenting me, but, at home, I make attempts to recycle and do not want to be wasteful while on vacation.

With this in mind, I began to do some research while on vacation in Disney to find out exactly what they do to recycle there at Walt Disney World.  Here is what I found:

1.  Disney requests that all guests use their towels again.  I bet you have noticed the cards in your bathroom at your Disney World resort requesting that you agree to reusing your towel by simply rehanging the towel on the towel rack.  This simple act reduces the amount of water, detergent, and man hours used to provide clean towels to guests on a daily basis.

2.  In your resort room,  you will notice that Disney has included a “green” trash can.  I noticed on this trip that the cans no longer have the arrow recycle symbol on them, and are now just green.  These cans are for items that are recyclable.  I frequently add glass bottles, paper, plastics and the like to these cans and attempt to use them as often as I do the regular trash can, when appropriate.

3.  Look for Jimminy Cricket!  Disney uses him as a symbol on guest doors in their Walt Disney World resorts to gently remind guests as they exit their resort room to turn off their lights and other electrical items to reduce the amount of electricity used.

4.  Included all over the parks and resorts are recycle bins for bottles, etc.  Look for them and be sure to use them to help in the recycling efforts!

After returning home, I further researched to find that Disney recycles 18,000 tons of materials each year.  They have also set up a program entitled Disney Harvest whereby they donate approximately 50,000 POUNDS of prepared yet unserved edible food each MONTH! The company also recycles approximately 5 million plastic guest key cards per year.  (I have never seen where they would take those in for recycling.  Have you?  Perhaps they are simply recycling the keys that are left in the room by the guests?)  And finally, they have changed their lights to compact fluorescent bulbs as well as switching to low flow shower heads and toilets.

Should you want to learn more about recycling while in the parks at Walt Disney World, consider a visit to the Waste Management Don’t Waste It! exhibit located in EPCOT’s Innoventions East.  Here you will find a game worth of a bit of recycled fun and learning for all ages.  I hope you will consider recycling whether on vacation or at home.

Disney World Planning 101 - Safety at the Parks

Do you let your guard down at Disney World? I find that I do.  To most of us, Disney World is not only the happiest place on earth, it’s also one of the safest.  It certainly feels like it.  There are helpful cast members everywhere. You don’t have to look far to find security. Your surrounded by families.  For the most part, the assumption that Disney is a safe place is well-founded. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be mindful of safety.

The best advice is simple:  Take the same safety precautions at Disney World that you would at home.  If you’re reading this, you’re probably already concerned enough about safety  that you do this.  Still, I am sometimes stunned by the willful stupidity of some guests visiting Disney World.  A few months ago a couple left their young foster children in their resort room for several hours while they relaxed by the pool. In another incident, a family left their toddler to sleep unattended on a chair in a water park while they enjoyed the park. When they returned some time later, they were angry to find that security had been called and taken the child. I can’t say that these couples wouldn’t have made the same mistake at home, but I do wonder if the fact that they were on vacation in a place generally regarded as safe didn’t influence their decision.

Orlando is one of the busiest tourist destinations in the world, so it’s not surprising that it’s also home to criminals whose intent is to separate you from your belongings . . . or worse.  With that in mind, here are just a few safety tips for your next trip to the World:

1. Never leave young children alone in your hotel room. I know this seems like an obvious piece of advice, but people do it. If you need a night out, Orlando has numerous babysitting services that are reasonably priced and whose sitters undergo thorough background checks. If you are a Disney resort guest, you can take advantage of the on-site Kids’ Clubs which provide children with dinner and entertainment nightly.

2. Consider putting a temporary tattoo with your phone number on it should your child get lost in the parks. Also, identify a meeting place beforehand in the event that members of your party get lost.

3. Bring a small ziplock bag of your own babyproofing supplies if you have small children, as most hotels and rental homes are not babyproofed. Many rental houses have private pools just a few feet from the living room. While this is a real luxury, it also poses a safety hazard.  Ask the owner or rental agency ahead of time what kind of safety measures are in place.  Also remember to be mindful of doors that lead out to balconies and half walls that separate your balcony from your neighbor’s, as children might be tempted to climb over the latter.

4.  If you’re concerned about having an older child of the opposite sex accompany you into the restroom but they’re not yet hold enough to go alone, consider using a family bathroom; they are in all the parks. Check your park map for locations.

5. Resist the urge to leave valuables in an unattended stroller or wheelchair. If you’re staying on-site and make a purchase, have your item sent back to your resort; it’s a perk for Disney resort guests. If you’re not staying on-site, you can still have your items sent to the front of any park for pick up on your way out.

6. Don’t open your hotel room door unless you’re sure who’s there. If you’re concerned, call down to the front desk.

7.  Lock and latch your door. The latch, which is located on the upper part of the door out of most small children’s reach, not only gives you added security from the outside, it also keeps younger children, who can easily open a locked hotel room door while mom or dad is momentarily distracted, from getting outside.

8. Use your room safe. Most hotels will safeguard larger items for you.

9. Do NOT buy partially used tickets from “businesses” set up outside of Disney. This is a scam.

10. Familiarize yourself with Florida’s child safety seat laws.

11.  You probably don’t spend much time in busy parking lots or at bus stops at home.  At Disney World, it’s a fact of life.  If possible, keep toddlers in their stroller until you’re ready to board the bus.  Even the most attentive parent gets distracted.  In this environment, better safe than sorry.

We’d love to hear your safety tips and concerns.  Please feel free to leave a comment and let us  know.

Best Things I Love About Disney – Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Best Things I Love About Disney - Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

How did I miss this among the many “Best Things” articles I have written. Not only is it one of my favorite attractions it is a true Walt Disney World Classic. It has been around for more than thirty years pleasing park visitors of all ages. There are some attractions that can be a bit rough on the older and younger folks but this one is truly a family friendly coaster. Personally I enjoy this one as much for the theme as I do the ride itself and never miss a chance to take multiple rides every visit.

One thing that keeps folks from enjoying the theme  that the Imagineers have worked so hard to put together is a nervous anticipation of riding a real roller coaster. Sure it has some curves and just a little bit of speed (not a lot) but it’s smooth and doesn’t bounce you around very much at all. Compared to Space Mountain it’s the “smoothest ride in the west’.

So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the detail that surrounds you. The very best time to check out the scenery is as the mine car train climbs many of the hills and then you can hold on as you start down those same hills. Another way to learn to appreciate the theme is to just ride the attraction and you will see just how tame this coaster really is and then on your next ride you will feel relaxed enough to do some looking around.

Don’t pass up Big Thunder Mountain Railroad because it is truly one of the fun attractions at WDW. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Discounts: Military Rates Extended; AP Rates For Summer 2011

Yesterday, Disney announced that they’re extending military discounts through the end of September 2012.  If you are an active-duty or retired military member, you qualify for discounts up to 40% off rooms and for deeply discounted tickets.   See your travel agent or call Disney directly.

Be careful with this discount–you’ll need to ask for it, as with all discounts. In my experience, it’s the one that often falls through the cracks because it’s not all that well publicized.  Make sure you tell your travel agent or the cast member you speak to at Disney reservations that you qualify.

Next, summer rates for annual passholders were announced this morning:

Tiered Resort Savings: (June 3 – 14, 2011):

* Save 15% on Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campsites
* Save 20% at Disney’s Value and Moderate Resorts
* Save 25% at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and Disney’s Polynesian Resort
* Save 30% at Deluxe (excluding Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and Disney’s Polynesian Resort)
* Save 35% at Disney Deluxe Villa Resort

Tiered Resort Savings: (June 15 – August 13, 2011):

Must See – Disney’s BoardWalk

Must See - Disney's BoardWalk

One of my absolute favorite places to visit at the Walt Disney World Resort is Disney’s BoardWalk. The Boardwalk Inn and Villas hosts both an hotel and Disney’s Vacation Club Property.   Also, the BoardWalk offers an adorable lake front area with restaurants, shops, and more, reminiscent of turn of the century Atlantic City and Coney Island.

Though I have yet to stay at the Boardwalk Inn, a Deluxe Resort, I love spending an evening strolling the Boardwalk, perusing the stores, and having dinner.  Home to one of my personal favorite restaurants, Kouzzina by Cat Cora (Iron Chef!), other dining options include the ESPN Club, Big River Grille and Brewery, Flying Fish Cafe, and a Pizza Window, among others.  If you’re looking for sweets, there is the BoardWalk Bakery for baked goods, though they also have dinner options as well.  Also, Seashore Sweets offers candies from Goofy’s Candy Company and ice cream as well.

The BoardWalk also offers Jellyrolls and the Atlantic Dance Hall offer entertainment such as dancing, dueling pianos, and more for the 21 and up crowd looking for a good time.  There’s also an art gallery that I’ve been lucky enough to see shows of beautiful creations, Disney and otherwise inspired.  If you’re not looking for something so intense, there are often street performers on the BoardWalk, performing magic, juggling, or just about anything you can imagine!

Disney’s BoardWalk can be reached by Friendship boat and walkway, to DHS and EPCOT, or by bus. No matter how you get here you will enjoy strolling the Boardwalk and just being at Walt Disney World.

Beginners Guide to Pin Trading

Beginners Guide to Pin TradingYou see them everywhere at Disney: all kinds of shapes, sizes, colors, designs, and patterns. They commemorate events, parks, hotels, rides and attractions, characters and holidays. They come in sets and individually, and can range from inexpensive little fun ones to very expensive collectors’ sets. They are, of course, Disney pins…and if you haven’t yet gotten involved in pin trading, be warned: it is very fun…and more than a little addictive.

Pin collecting can all be a little overwhelming at first though, so if all those brightly colored little pieces of metal are calling your name, here are a few things to know so that you can have fun with pin trading…but not spend a fortune in the process.

First of all, pin collecting can provide some wonderful and fairly inexpensive souvenirs(if you don’t get carried away), and if you decide to do some trading, it is a great activity for kids! But, it doesn’t have to involve trading if you don’t want to trade! For our family of 3 adults, it is more of a collection thing now: we typically choose 2-3 per trip that are especially meaningful, and we hold on to them…no trading them away!

But if you want to trade, jump right in and have fun! Pin trading is especially popular with children and I always love seeing kids bravely ask castmembers to trade a pin with them….and then be delighted when they do!

Now you do want to be careful if you are on a budget, because yes, this CAN be an expensive hobby if you are not careful! While the cost of pins can start as low as maybe $6-8 each, they can go up to $20+ for some very elaborate limited editions. And Disney sells pin sets too, so if you like that idea, you can spend even more.

So if this all sounds like a fun and rewarding hobby and activity, well it is! To get started then, keep in mind the following:

  1. If you have kids, arrive at Disney with a dozen or so cheap pins for your kids to trade with. You can find some on eBay, at DisneyStore.com, and even Amazon. The idea here is to trade these for others your kids will like more.
  2. Set a limit of so many per day, or per trip, or a cost limit…and then stick to it. It is easy once you start looking at them, to get carried away!
  3. It is easier, in my opinion, to do this if you are collecting with a theme in mind…..which can be just about anything. Maybe the resorts, or characters, or villains, or princesses. You name it, Disney’s got a pin for it. For us, we tend to now  buy our pins around dated events, as they are a great reminder of when we went and when we got the pin: for example New Years Eve 2005.
  4. Make a conscious decision: collect for fun, collect to trade, or collect seriously. If you have kids who are going to trade everything away, you won’t spend a lot on them, or especially care about what they look like. But if you want to make this a serious collection, you can purchase only Limited Editions, for example, to increase the value of your collection. If this appeals to you, there are some great books out there that can give you more information.
  5. Think about how you are going to keep them when you get home! Don’t go to all this trouble to buy all these pins and just keep them in a shoebox! Some people frame the lanyards and pins. Some put their pins in a shadow box. We were given the suggestion, to create binders with foam sheets in between to protect the pins, and that is what we do. And I have to say, it is fun to go back and look at the binders years later and relive the fun we had collecting them!
  6. Check out the “Official Disney Pin Trading Site”, a great site filled with all kinds of helpful information for anyone who is interested in pin collecting and trading at the Disney Parks. It even provides some “pin trading etiquette”. For example:
  • IS IT TRUE DISNEY CAST MEMBERS HAVE TO TRADE THEIR PINS?
Yes. Cast Members at our Theme Parks and Resorts have to trade their pins displayed on their Company issued lanyards. Guests can make up to two (2) trades per “lanyard,” per Cast Member, per day. When trading with Cast Members, Guests should offer a pin that is not already displayed on the Cast Member’s lanyard.
  • WHY ARE SOME CAST MEMBERS WEARING GREEN/TEAL LANYARDS?
Disney Pin Trading is fun for people of all ages. However, kids, ages 3-12, get an extra trading treat. Look for Kids Only lanyards – Disneyland® Resort uses “teal” lanyards and Walt Disney World® Resort uses “green” lanyards. This means that Kids are the only Guests allowed to trade from these special lanyards. Kids can also trade from Cast Members wearing blue lanyards.

Pin collecting and trading can be a fun and rewarding hobby and a relatively inexpensive one if you are careful. Have a great time finding your favorites, and watching your collection grow!

Disney Confidential – Brazil Pavilion Coming to Epcot

Disney Confidential - Brazil Pavilion Coming to Epcot

Hey there kiddies. Your friendly neighborhood Disney Gossip columnist Anyonymouse here.

I love a good rumor as much as the next gal. I can’t tell you how many I hear a new country is coming to Epcot’s World Showcase. This weeks rumor is the addition of a Brazil to my favorite Disney World Park.

According to a columnist for Sao Paolo newspaper Folha, Disney approached the Brazilian government this week about adding a Brazil pavilion to Epcot.

This is interesting news especially since Morocco is the only Pavilion in the World Showcase sponsored by a Government.

I am trying to remember last year around this time there was talks of another country coming to Epcot. It is one of those rumors that I will believe it when I see Chip posting an article on the website.

So I want to hear what you think. Let me know if you believe it or if you would like to see another country other than Brazil be added to the World Showcase.

Well back to weekend. I wanted to drop by and share with you some juicy Disney Gossip.

    Happy Easter Everyone!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Earns Four-Diamond Status

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Earns Four-Diamond Status

Earlier this month,Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge celebrated its 10th anniversary. This week, the resort has something new to celebrate – achieving prestigious AAA Four-Diamond status for the first time in its history.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is the seventh Walt Disney World resort to achieve this honor, which recognizes hotels around the globe that offer world-class amenities, service and attention to detail. Only 4 percent of AAA-rated hotels receive this prestigious status.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Earns Four-Diamond Status

One of Disney’s deluxe resorts, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge includes three African-inspired restaurants, a thatch-roofed lobby with a massive mud fireplace and flowing stream inside. The resort also features an elevated “kopje,” or rock outcropping, which allows guests to observe animals – including zebra and giraffe – from just yards away.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Earns Four-Diamond Status

According to General Manager Kim Marinaccio, the resort’s biggest asset is its team of cast members, who continually strive for “jamala” (the Swahili word for “courtesy and refinement”). In her opinion, it’s their drive for superior service that makes Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge an unforgettable place.

“What helps our resort is that our cast members and leaders embrace the African culture, which is very warm and sharing,” Kim explained. “Our cast members have a passion for African culture and conservation, and they’re excited to share this knowledge with guests.”

    Starspeeder 1000 Spaceliner Collection

If I had a nickel for the hours I spent as a child playing with my Star Wars toys, I would be living on a beach in Maui right now. Luckily, my parents saved those toys (thanks Mom and Dad), and my son now spends hours pretending he is in a galaxy far, far away. Soon, he will have a few more toys (among several awesome things) to add to his Star Wars collection, especially with the launch of “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue” on May 20. But wait! I get to photograph and write about merchandise created for Star Tours? Sign me up! After reviewing the more than 40 items we’ve created, I have selected a few of my favorites to share with you.

First up is the incredibly detailed Starspeeder 1000 Spaceliner Collection. This boxed set features die-cast metal vehicles representing six spaceliners that are involved with the new Star Tours story. I spoke with Brad Schoeneberg, Product Developer for Toys and Games, to learn more about the toys.

    Star Tours Action Figures

“We’ve been working on the Star Tours toys for about two years now,” explained Brad. “During the past two years, we have had a great relationship with Walt Disney Imagineering. They provided us with tons of reference material for the Starspeeders and other new characters. That partnership helped us capture wonderful details including the tiny droids seen on top of each of [the Starspeeders].”

This set will retail for $22.95. Brad also shared with me the packaging for the “Ambush at Star Tours” and the “Star Tours Travel Agency” action figure sets (both will retail for $39.95 each). Favorite figures include the Sky Troopers who were created specifically for the attraction. I also loved how the droid who is “fluent in over six million forms of communication,” C-3PO, turned out.

    Star Tours Shirts

But toys aren’t the only thing I loved seeing (or should I say “playing with?”). We are releasing a variety of shirts for launch. I particularly liked the stylized travel posters shirt, as there is no better way to say “I love space travel” than with that one. How I wish I could visit Bespin and hang out with Lando Calrissian!

20 oz. Darth Vader Tumbler Exclusively for Passholders

There are a few items, however, that neither my son nor I can get – we are not Passholders (unlike many of you and I’m bummed). These Passholder Exclusive items will include a commemorative coin, a limited edition pen (not to be confused with a “pin,” which will also be released), a Darth Vader T-shirt and, what I consider the most awesome drinkware in the galaxy, a 20 oz. tumbler featuring Darth Vader.

I don’t think I can make time pass fast enough until the opening! As mentioned, there are many other items we created for the launch, so keep watching ArtofDisneyParks.com for release dates and additional information.
