Radiator Springs Racers Begins Ride Testing Today

Radiator Springs Ride Vehicle at the 2011 D23 Expo

In the normal development process of any ride-based attraction at Disney Parks, Imagineers spend weeks and even months testing the ride vehicles. Many of you may have seen one of the first ride vehicles, which was on display at the D23 Expo in Anaheim this past weekend in the Parks & Resorts Pavilion. While it might be a while before you see this or any of the other ride vehicles racing around Ornament Valley, keep checking back with the Disney Parks Blog for the latest updates.

Walt Disney World Resort Welcomes the PRSA 2011 International Conference to Orlando

Walt Disney World Resort Welcomes the PRSA 2011 International Conference to Orlando

As a destination that combines imagination with exceptional storytelling to inspire people of all ages, Walt Disney World Resort, will serve as the premiere sponsor of the Public Relations Society of America‘s (PRSA) 2011 International Conference, Oct. 15–18, in Orlando, Fla.

“Walt Disney World Resort is an ideal sponsor for the PRSA International Conference, especially considering this year’s theme, ‘Imagine. Create. Inspire:  Envisioning the Future of Public Relations,'” said Rosanna Fiske, APR, PRSA chair and CEO. “Our theme speaks to the new opportunities that today’s technological advances are creating for public relations professionals, and invites practitioners to join together in imagining the ways in which those changes will impact the profession’s future.”

Disney extends their imagination to the Conference in the shape of Joe Rohde, senior vice president and creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale, Calif. Rohde will open the General Session on Monday, Oct. 17, with his presentation “Theme Is a Noun.”

Walt Disney Imagineering is the master planning, creative development, design, engineering, production, project management, and research and development arm of The Walt Disney Company and its affiliates. Representing more than 140 disciplines, its talented corps of Imagineers is responsible for the creation of Disney resorts, theme parks and attractions, hotels, water parks, real estate developments, regional entertainment venues, cruise ships and new media technology projects.

Rohde joins other keynote speakers at the International Conference, including Soledad O’Brien, award-winning special investigations correspondent and host of CNN’s “In America” documentaries; Peter Diamandis, CEO of X Prize Foundation; and Chris Brogan, social media consultant and president of Human Business Works.

Conference participants can take advantage of discounted hotel rates in Orlando. PRSA also offers a $200 saver rate on registrations completed by Aug. 26.

Disney-sponsored College Football Game Returns to Orlando Labor Day Weekend

Disney-sponsored College Football Game Returns to Orlando Labor Day Weekend

With the start of football season just a couple of weeks away, Central Florida is gearing up to shine in the national spotlight with a Disney-sponsored football game showcasing teams from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in the Mid-Eastern and Southwestern Athletic Conferences. Scheduled to be broadcast across the networks of ESPN this Labor Day Weekend, the 7th Annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney will bring tens of thousands of fans and a positive economic impact to Central Florida.

One of Central Florida’s own universities, Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, will face-off against Texas’ Prairie View A&M University in the big game that will once again kick-off the 2011 HBCU football season at noon, Sunday, Sept. 4 at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando.

For years, Walt Disney World has played a role in bringing some of the best HBCU football teams in the country to Orlando to highlight talented and diverse student athletes on a national stage.

Eugene Campbell, vice president of Domestic Minority Business Development for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, says Disney is pleased to celebrate this annual football tradition and the monumental effort that goes into the development of a young athlete.

“The MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney is more than a game – it’s a celebration of determination and passion that the players possess both on and off the field,” says Campbell. “We have a long history of supporting the African-American community and we’re proud to build on this legacy by supporting the 25 Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the Mid-Eastern and Southwestern Athletic Conferences.”

In the days leading up to the battle on the gridiron several other events will take place, including the ESPN 101 Panel at Jones High School on Sept. 1 where former athletes, sports personalities and professionals will share their insights and advice about careers in sports and related fields.

On Saturday, Sept. 3 the Legends Reception at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, will honor prominent graduates of HBCU’s, including Navy Vice Admiral David Brewer III, world-renowned poet, writer and activist Nikki Giovanni, NFL Hall of Famer Ken Houston, former Miami Dolphins player Larry Little and three-time NFL Pro Bowler Robert Porcher III.

The thousands of fans visiting the region for the MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney will also be able to take full advantage of the weekend of activities with the Pregame Praise at Tinker Field and The Great Heart & Soul Tailgate before the game on Sunday, Sept. 4.

“We look forward to welcoming the players, coaches and fans of these great schools to what promises to be a weekend of outstanding competition,” adds Campbell. For more information about the MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney, visit http://www.meacswacchallenge.com.

Early Buyers Prepare to Move in to Golden Oak Homes

For most people, a visit to Walt Disney World is reason to celebrate.  But that wasn’t quite enough for two families from Oklahoma and West Virginia.

“I wanted to be the grandma who lives at Walt Disney World!” says Jill, who along with her husband, Jack, was one of the first families to purchase land and build a home in Golden Oak, Disney’s unique residential resort community. “Who do you think the kids will want to visit the most?”

Karen, who bought a home with her husband, Kevin, had a similar feeling about Golden Oak: “Disney’s just outside the gate, but it’s quiet inside. We know this will make our kids and grandkids happy!”

Karen and Kevin will move into their Spanish-Revival inspired home in the next two months. The home is located in Silverbrook, which features 19 home sites of approximately one-half acre each. Residents can savor moments of quiet repose alongside conservation areas or water features, or easily stroll to community amenities and activities at the Summerhouse, which is currently under construction.

Jack and Jill will move into their Tuscan-inspired vacation home in January, with plans to split their time between Florida and Oklahoma. But, as Jill says jokingly, “Jack is a little concerned that he may lose me to Florida for most of the year!” Their home is located in Kimball Trace, a charming Tuscan-inspired village nestled between the tranquil waters of the lagoon and the cool shade of the natural preserves. Varying in design and style, each home demonstrates the luxury lifestyle that Golden Oak has to offer – including subtle Disney-inspired touches.

Kimball Trace also features the first three showcase village homes in Golden Oak, which were recently completed and furnished, and are now open for tours (by appointment only):

  • Inspiring to all who enter the front door, Villa d’Este by Goehring & Morgan showcases the exquisite view of the outdoor areas. Featuring approximately 3,664 square feet of indoor living space, this home offers four bedrooms, four en-suite bathrooms and one powder room, a gathering room with incredible beamed ceilings and a separate study. The owner’s suite overlooks a long view of the courtyard areas and pond. Subtle, yet elegant details of this home, such as the knotty alder front door; the interior and exterior ironwork; the clay tile imported from France; and, the authentic stone on the exterior elevation, help to create a truly exceptional showcase home.
  • Casa di Lusso by ISSA Homes is as beautiful as it is timeless. This two- story home features approximately 4,272 square feet of indoor living space where almost all rooms have a generous view of the pond.  This home is inspired by a creatively designed farmhouse, and is open and airy. Featuring four bedrooms, four en-suite bathrooms, one powder room and a generous area for entertaining, this home is one of a kind. One is immediately drawn to the large outdoor living space and generously sized pool and spa.
  • An architecturally inspiring home, Da Vinci by Cahill showcases approximately 4,044 square feet of indoor living area. This home features four bedrooms – all with en-suite bathrooms and one of which is a private guest suite – an additional study/guest bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, one powder room and a family room and kitchen designed for bringing the family together as well as entertaining. The well-appointed and large owner’s suite features a walk -in closet and is privately located on the first floor, surrounded by a beautiful courtyard filled with flowers and palm trees.

CHARMING VILLAGE SETTINGS

Both Kimball Trace and Silverbrook are within neighborly reach of Summerhouse, Golden Oak’s planned 16,000 square-foot residential clubhouse designed by Walt Disney Imagineers. Currently under construction and scheduled for opening in 2012, Summerhouse has been planned to include indoor and outdoor dining areas, a lounge with wine storage and full bar, a family room with gaming area, a demonstration kitchen for guest chef appearances, as well as a state-of-the-art fitness facility, locker rooms and pool with towel service. An outdoor fire pit, courtyard, function lawn and park areas are planned for year-round recreation. Programs are anticipated to include kitchen demonstrations by Disney chefs, seasonal parties and family events hosted by Golden Oak Resident Services professionals.

Other neighborhoods currently under construction in the one-of-a-kind community located at Walt Disney World Resort include:

Carolwood Reserve

A limited offering of eight premium custom-home sites, all generously sized at approximately three-quarters acre each. Residents here will enjoy serene natural, golf course or water views.

Carolwood

The natural preserves surrounding this lovely neighborhood offer a scenic and private setting. At up to three-quarters acre in size, each of Carolwood’s 17 grand estate custom-home sites can amply accommodate multi-generational families.

THE DISNEY CONNECTION

Families who close on the purchase of a homesite or completed home in Golden Oak before December 31, 2011 will receive one complimentary five-year Golden Oak VIP Pass for the homebuyer, providing admission for the homebuyer and up to four guests. The special Golden Oak VIP Pass will allow admission to all four Walt Disney World theme parks, water parks, DisneyQuest indoor interactive theme park and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex every day of the year with no block-out dates. Also included is complimentary parking for one car and discounts up to 20 percent on select merchandise purchased at select Walt Disney World Resort parks or Downtown Disney area locations.

Every homeowner at Golden Oak will be a member of the private social and recreational Golden Oak Club.  As part of the club membership, homeowners will receive Door-to-Park transportation, complimentary merchandise delivery to their home in Golden Oak, special golf services, and access to the Extra Magic Hours benefit at Walt Disney World (early- or after-hours access to one of the four Walt Disney World Resort theme parks daily). Disney-designed holiday décor, golf program and in-park special event tickets will be available for an additional fee.

Additionally, Resident Services at Golden Oak will bring Disney’s personal guest service culture directly to residents and guests.  A dedicated onsite team at Golden Oak will help arrange personal, residential and resort requests such as move-in services, pre-arrival and post-departure home maintenance services, travel and private transportation, holiday home décor, grocery shopping, VIP tours and more.

Jill says her family is excited to experience all that Golden Oak has to offer. “We are counting the moments until we turn the key at Golden Oak and say ‘Welcome to our Disney home!’”

GOLDEN OAK at WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT

Golden Oak will initially consist of three types of single-family homes: Village, Estate and Grand Estate Homes. Village Homes will capture the romantic look of a Mediterranean village on homesites up to one-quarter acre. Estate Homes, on approximately one-half acre homesites, will offer a variety of architectural styles including Tuscan, Spanish Revival, Venetian, Italianate, Dutch Colonial and Island Colonial. At up to three-quarters acre in size, Grand Estate Homes will include architectural styles consistent with Estate Homes and will accommodate the needs of large families. Home prices start at $1.4 million.

Golden Oak at Walt Disney World Resort brings together family, friends and cherished Disney traditions in a unique, luxury residential resort community of single-family custom homes. To live at Golden Oak is to enjoy a destination experience year round, with distinctive neighborhoods, expansive natural preserves and inviting amenities—including a private clubhouse, concierge-style resident services and Walt Disney World Resort park offerings. Also planned for the community is Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney WorldResort, with a golf course, spa and restaurants. For more information, visit www.disneygoldenoak.com.

D23 Expo Attendees See Lion King 3D

D23 Expo Attendees See Lion King 3D

One of my favorite parts of the Expo was being able to see “Lion King 3D” before everyone else. “Lion King 3D” will be playing in select theaters for a limited time two week engagement, beginning September 16. The 3D engagement comes right before the 3D release of the film on Blu-Ray (and 2D Blu-Ray release) hits stores on October 4.

I have always loved “Lion King”. Always. When I heard it was going to be in 3D, I didn’t approve at first. Generally, I don’t like 3D. I find it quite unnecessary and it tends to give me a headache. But then I saw the trailer for it while seeing “Cars 2” in 3D. I was completely blown away, and knew that I would love it.

I never got a chance to see the film on the big screen when it debuted in 1994. Then again, I was super young, so my parents probably made the wise decision in not taking me. Seeing it on a huge screen this weekend was a big deal for me.

When the opening credits started, I got chills. Serious chills. Goosebumps. Shivers. After the initial “Circle of Life” opening, the crowd erupted in cheers when the title screen appeared. As much as this word is overused, the only way to describe all of this was epic.

The film’s 3D was not overwhelming by any means. It actually made the film look really good. It wasn’t a bunch of things flying at you or any of the usual cliche 3D gags; the 3D effect provided additional depth to the film. It was beautiful. The most intense scene was, of course, the stampede. I totally shed a few tears. I couldn’t help it.

If you get the chance and the theater near you is participating in the engagement, go see it. Yes, I’m telling you to spend the extra money on a 3D movie. It’s totally worth it. The film is amazing already, but seeing it in 3D really immerses you into the film and the picture is just absolutely gorgeous.  Go see it!

Arnold Palmer and Disney Pair Up For a Swing at Golf Magic

Palmer and Disney Pair Up For a Swing at Golf Magic

The golf courses here at Walt Disney World Resort have long been favorites among guests and industry experts. Now the golf experience here is about to get even better.

Disney announced today that they are pairing up with one of the biggest names in golf – Arnold Palmer. Arnold Palmer Golf Management is going to operate, manage, maintain and help promote Disney’s five golf courses – the Magnolia, the Palm, Oak Trail, Osprey Ridge and Lake Buena Vista starting Sept. 25.

In a nutshell, this is going to be a stroke of golf genius for anyone who comes to Disney to play golf. That’s because the Palmer name is known for innovative course designs and elements created personally by Palmer, some of which are visible amid its portfolio of renowned courses that stretches from Hawaii to Connecticut. And when you blend that with Disney Park’s already family-friendly environment and its rich golf heritage, what you’ll get is a mixture that further enhances Disney Golf’s stature as a unique golf destination experience that appeals to golfers of all levels.

The creative brainstorming will begin soon, but Palmer has already said he’s “looking forward to the opportunity’’ to work with Disney. And he said he plans to designate the Palm course as one of his signature courses with elements designed by him.

Wednesday with Walt: Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier

Wednesday with Walt: Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier

Many of the contributions from Walt Disney’s life have had a huge impact on my life. You know that familiar question, if you could have dinner with anyone (dead or alive) who would it be? Walt’s hope was to help change people’s lives for the better. But there was one person whose life Walt would completely spin around without even knowing he was doing it.

Last week, August 16 (1924) would have marked the 87th birthday of an American icon, actor Fess Parker. Fess Parker and Walt Disney had a whirlwind relationship that neither of them ever expected. The  level of success Mr. Parker enjoyed after being cast in the role of Walt Disney’s Davy Crockett was something that no one, even Walt, ever anticipated.

Fess Parker was a Texan who attended the University of Texas and graduated with a degree in History in 1950. He then moved to California and completed academic work on his Masters degree in drama at the University of Southern California.  He began acting professionally in 1951 as a  stage performer and had decided that he would give himself 36 months to make a living as an actor and, if it didn’t happen, he would give up that dream and change careers. In 1954, during the 35th month of his 36-month deadline, Walt Disney began the filming of Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier.

Walt had been thinking about the idea of making an animation on Davy Crockett since the mid-1940s. By the time Disneyland was in the planning stages, Walt was urging the Frontierland unit to come up with stories on American heroes and, desperate for time, they just pulled one out of the stack of ideas. Bill Walsh said that it was by dumb luck that they chose Davy Crockett.

Walt went to screen the horror film Them! to get a look at James Arness, who had been suggested as a good choice to play Davy Crockett. But Walt really liked another actor in the movie; a tall man with a southern drawl, Fess Parker. He asked Fess to audition for him in the studio. Fess didn’t really know how to play the part, so he picked up his guitar and started to play a song. Wouldn’t you know it, he played a railroad blues song with train sounds in it. He played train sounds on a guitar to a man who absolutely LOVED trains. Needless to say, Walt hired him right then and there.

The made-for-television movie, “Davy Crockett,” which aired on Disneyland on December 5, 1954 became an overnight sensation. Children were walking around singing the theme song,” The Ballad of Davy Crockett,” and within 6 months had bought 7,000,000 copies of the record. Crockett t-shirts, toy rifles, books, and loads of other merchandise was sold. Ten million Crockett coonskin caps were being worn by boys and girls around the country. The sales of merchandise rivaled only one other merchandising phenom, Mickey Mouse.

Davy Crockett pushed the Disneyland show audience to well over the 40-million mark. Fess Parker began to be asked to make numerous personal appearances and the reaction from the public was unbelievable. Fess wrote Walt a note of appreciation that said, “no young man has ever had a greater share of good fortune!”

Walt was very pleased with the country’s acceptance of this American hero because, to Walt, he represented well the traits of a plainspoken, fearless, idealistic, compassionate hero…traits which Walt valued highly. Davy Crockett came at a time when America really needed a hero. It was, surprisingly, the best thing that could have happened for Fess Parker, Walt Disney and the country as a whole.

Fess Parker became a contract actor for Disney and starred in many Disney movies after that. He was honored for his work with Disney on December 15, 2004 ( the 50th anniversary of the debut of the “Davy Crockett” episodes) when he received his own tribute window on a façade in the Frontierland section of Disneyland.

I found this youtube video posted by yensidnaf (Nov, 2008) of Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen reminiscing about the Davy Crockett days. It was taken from a 1978 NBC Special saluting the 25th Anniversary of The Wonderful World of Disney/Color Television Show. I hope you will enjoy it!
