Modern Endings: Princesses in Today’s World

Image via Wikipedia

Happily Ever After. Every Disney movie seems to end that way, but especially if it’s a Princess movie! Of course, we don’t live in that kind of a world, do we?

Celebrities are constantly being maligned. Their lives are reported on and distorted beyond recognition. Sometimes it’s unbelievable the headlines we see!

So I wondered:

What kind of headlines would the Disney Princesses make in today’s tabloids?

Well, let’s have a look…

Snow White

Teenage Girl Arrested for Polygamy With Seven Men

Aurora

Parents of Comatose Girl Decide to Remove Life Support

Cinderella

Lonely Woman’s Strange Hobby: Sewing Clothes for Mice

Ariel

Girl Found on Beach Half-naked, Fined, Defendant Speechless

Jasmine

Royalty Involved in Peasant Scandal, Loses Crown

Belle

Woman Turns Down He-man, Marries Man-Beast

Pocahontas

Young Lady Committed, Claims Tree is Grandmother, Talks to Raccoon

Mulan

Girl Charged With Tom-Peepery, Found in Men’s Bathing Pool

Tiana

Family Disowns Daughter for Alternative Lifestyle After Kissing Frog

Rapunzel

Girl Arrested After Striking Man With Frying Pan, Claims Self-Defense

So I guess it’s for the best that these stories take place far, far away in a time long, long ago, and not in our modern world!

Character Dining: How Much Is Too Much?

Character Dining: How Much Is Too Much?

I see this a lot:  A family plans a trip to Disney World and they get the dining plan, which allows them to eat at a wide variety of restaurants on site, but when  they make their advanced dining reservations (ADRs), they end up booking a character meal for almost every day of the trip.  As a travel agent and possibly more so parent as a who’s taken my children to Disney World many times, I want to shout “don’t do it.”  Don’t get me wrong, I like character meals, but hear me out.  There’s a reason why I say this.

Disney World is an amazing place with a lot going on almost 24-hours a day, much more than you can experience in one trip.  It can sometimes be too much for an adult to take in, much less small children.  For someone like me, who really likes to eat, food is a big part of that experience and character meals can really add to your visit:  The character buffets at Disney are surprisingly good and the interaction with the characters is more involved than at a regular meet and greet in the parks.   But at a certain point, you can overdue it.  Add too many character meals to a kids’ schedule and they get a little bored  It’s sort of like opening gifts on Christmas morning:  We all remember how the first few were the most exciting.

Aside from being overwhelmed, one problem with too many character meals, from an adult perspective, is that you miss out on so much good food.  I’ve said before that I’m not a fan of buffets, but I generally think Disney buffets are a cut above what you would find off site.  Having said that, most of these meals are pretty much the same thing over and over.  Why would you want to stick to fried chicken and mac and cheese your entire trip when you can have great, wood-fired pizza or artisan pork?

Here’s what I propose instead:  Do just two character meals for a week-long stay, say Chef Mickey’s and Cinderella’s Royal Table, then pull the “It’s My Trip Too” card and plan a night for everyone at a signature restaurant of the grown-up’s choosing.  Signature restaurants, in case you’re wondering, are the more high-end of Disney’s table service restaurants. They require two table-service credits on the meal plan and offer more sophisticated, but still accessible, fare.  The nice thing about doing a “fancy” restaurant at Disney World, is that they’re all kid-friendly. At home, you may hesitate to take your young children to a white table cloth kind of restaurant, but you don’t have to worry about that at Disney. Every restaurant is set up to accomodate kids, complete with kid friendly menus and some of the best servers you encounter anywhere.  So branch out for a special evening without worrying.  I love a night out at California Grill, located on top of the Contemporary Resort, watching the fireworks and eating a good meal. It is a wonderful celebration and my favorite way to end our vacation.

This still leaves you with a few table-service credits left, so maybe try French food at Chefs de France for lunch or an African-inspired buffet at Boma for dinner.  One thing Disney does exceptoinally well is make sure that every restaurant has something for picky eaters, so don’t worry about accomadating someone who doesn’t like to experiment; even in the most exotic of restaurants, they should be able to find something to please.

Disney chefs work every day to overcome the impression that they’re serving “theme park food.”  Next trip, branch out and treat yourself.  You won’t regret it.

Celebrity Guests Announced for Star Wars Weekends 2011

Star Wars Weekends 2011

Star Wars Weekends 2011 will be a Tour de “Force” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, celebrating the grand opening of the new Star Tours attraction as the Walt Disney World Resort theme park welcomes Jedi, Sith, Ewoks, Wookiees, galactic bounty hunters and stormtroopers for the park’s annual celebration of all-things-Star Wars.

The fun takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 20-June 12, 2011.

Ashley Eckstein, R2-MK and Jedi Mickey Mouse

Once again, Jedi Mickey and Princess Leia Minnie will be joined by some of the brightest stars from the saga. Celebrity Hosts for the event this year are James Arnold Taylor (voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Ashley Eckstein (voice of Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars). Ashley (seen in the photo above with R2-MK and Jedi Mickey) will host “Clone Wars: Behind the Force,” a closer look inside the popular animated TV series. James will present another event-first: he will star in a one-man show that showcases some of the many voices he has performed throughout his career, including those from The Clone Wars.

Anthony Daniels

Opening weekend will kick off the month-long event in grand fashion, as fan favorite Anthony Daniels (seen in the photo above at a filming session for the new “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue” attraction), who brought C-3PO to life and is the only actor to appear in every theatrical chapter of the Star Wars saga, will make a golden return to the event. Dave Filoni, the talented artist and supervising director of The Clone Wars, also will be a special celebrity guest for Weekend I.

Star Wars Weekends II, III and IV will feature celebrities from the live-action feature films and voice artists from The Clone Wars. Here’s the complete event celebrity lineup (*talent subject to change) scheduled to appear:

Scheduled Celebrity Appearances

MAY 20-22

  • Anthony Daniels (C-3PO)
  • The Clone Wars Special Guest: Dave Filoni (Supervising Director)

MAY 27-29

  • Anthony Daniels (C-3PO)
  • Bruce Spence (Tion Medon)
  • The Clone Wars Voice Talent Guest: Dee Bradley Baker (Captain Rex)

JUNE 3-5

  • Ray Park (Darth Maul)
  • Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett)
  • The Clone Wars Voice Talent Guest: Matt Lanter (Anakin)

JUNE 10-12

  • Ray Park (Darth Maul)
  • Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca)
  • The Clone Wars Voice Talent Guest: Tom Kane (Yoda)

And while the stars will shine, a galaxy-full of events, live shows, parades and activities also take place throughout the park during the month.

An event highlight for many is meeting the Star Wars characters, and this year is no exception. More than 60 Star Wars characters will be roaming the theme park, posing for pictures and signing autographs.

From the special “welcome” Guests receive at the turnstile areas from the stormtroopers and Star Wars trivia contests to Jedi Training Academy and the spectacular Hyperspace Hoopla, Star Wars Weekends 2011 will have more fun than you can shake a gaffi stick at. And of course, throughout the event Star Wars Weekends Guests will have the chance to take a ride aboard “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue” when the attraction launches in 3-D on May 20.

Let us know if you plan to attend this year and what you’re looking forward to most about Star Wars Weekends 2011, or if you have a favorite memory from a past event.

Dwight Howard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Dwight Howard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

NBA basketball superstar Dwight Howard, All-Star center for the Orlando Magic, stopped by Disney’s Hollywood Studios today and had the chance to visit everyone’s favorite Wookiee, Chewbacca. Dwight, who just captured his third consecutive “NBA Defensive Player of the Year” award (he’s the first player in NBA history to win the award three straight years) and finished second in the NBA MVP vote this season, was all smiles as he visited with one of the very few film stars who can say they stand as tall as the popular athlete.

Posing with Chewbacca and wearing a pair of R2-D2 inspired Mouse Ears, Dwight looked right at home in front of the soon-to-open “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue” attraction. “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue” (as well as the 2011 edition of Star Wars Weekends) opens at Walt Disney World Resort on May 20.

As Dwight was leaving Chewbacca, he even did his best impression of the Wookiee’s unique “voice” (which Chewie seemed to especially like!). Let us know if you, or someone you know, has a knack at Chewbacca’s famous voice, or any others from the famed Star Wars saga.

Disney Vacation Souvenirs for the Budget Conscious

Disney Vacation Souvenirs for the Budget ConsciousAnyone who has ever tried to plan a Disney vacation on a budget probably knows this scenario: you spent weeks, maybe months looking at every aspect of your trip to see where you can save money. You have compared accommodation options, looked at Disney promotions to see what is the best deal for you, planned your meals with the precision of a general going into battle, scoured the internet looking for the lowest airfare, and maybe even purchased discounted Disney park tickets.

In short, you have exhausted every possible option to help you have an affordable Disney vacation.

And then you arrive at the Magic Kingdom and your little princess erupts into tears because she wants that pixie-dust encrusted Cinderella ball gown that costs “HOW much?”

Whoops. There goes the budget. 🙂

This doesn’t have to happen though, if you plan for this part of your trip just as you do with all the other pieces. Here are 3 quick things to think about in advance that can help you avoid the meltdowns while still providing magical mementos for your little ones.

Junior Should Have His Own Souvenir Budget

I am a big fan of setting a daily spending budget…even for kids. On our first trip, our daughter was seven, and we set aside some money each day that was “hers” to spend as she wished. It was not a great deal, but we found that having her own money to use, meant that when she used it up, she was done for the day. There was no complaining, whining, or begging. Once it was gone, it was gone.  She knew the guidelines and knew there was no point in complaining if she went over budget.

Shop for Souvenirs While Still Home…and Bring Them With You

Consider bringing some “souvenirs” with you, or have a box shipped to your hotel. You can use these bargains from home as gifts for your children at Disney World. Many families have found that kids love to get a surprise from Mickey when they wake up every morning, and these little surprises can minimize the need to beg for things in the parks.  Some families actually get quite elaborate with the daily “gift” by including some pixie dust and a note from Tinkerbell (or whoever your child loves). The excitement of starting the day off with something new and special can really reduce the daily begging for something else.

Make the Most of Those Autographs

With just a little pre-trip planning, you can turn your kids’ character autographs into a prized souvenir. Character autographs are hugely popular at the Disney theme parks, and there probably is no more affordable souvenir. But make it more exiting and fun by bringing something other than a book, like a tee shirt, or hat and give the character a sharpie to sign with. Your child will have an instant souvenir that will be cherished for years.

The key to planning an affordable Disney vacation is that “P” word: planning. That word is just as important when it comes to keeping your souvenir budget under control as it is with every other part of your trip. When it comes to Disney vacations, planning = Magic.

‘Tinka’ and ‘Deuce’ Spotted At Disneyland

'Tinka' and 'Deuce' Spotted At DisneylandI spent all day hunting around for Johnny Depp at Disneyland, but never came across him. (Big sad face!!!!) Apparently John Stamos and George Lopez were also in the park. (EVEN BIGGER SAD FACE. I loved Uncle Jesse.) I DID, however, run into Disney Channel stars Caroline Sunshine and Adam Irigoyan from “Shake It Up!”

‘Deuce’ and ‘Tinka’ were having fun in the park on Friday, May 6. We came across them at the exit of Thunder Mountain. How exciting! They were very nice and were chatting with some very excited kids. They kindly obliged to take a photo with us, and boarded the ride soon after.

Here’s our photographic evidence! Chip LOVES proof. (“Pictures or it didn’t happen!”)

Blackbeard Comes Aboard at Disneyland Park and Magic Kingdom Park May 20

Rendering of Ian McShane as Captain Blackbeard in the Pirates of the Caribbean Attractions at Disney Parks

On February 11, actor Ian McShane appeared on a soundstage in Los Angeles for a very special “head shot” – one that will soon be featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean attractions at Disneyland park and Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort.

Captain Blackbeard will make his appearance on the ghostly waterfall in the grotto scenes of the park attractions beginning May 20, coinciding with the release of the new film, “Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides,” in which McShane plays a starring role.

Walt Disney Imagineering writer Michael Sprout (who wrote the script for Bill Nighy as Davy Jones several years ago) was on hand to direct the special shoot with Ian McShane. Michael said, “He came in wearing his complete Blackbeard costume, including the sword, saying it helped him stay in character!”

Look for Blackbeard soon in this classic attraction, and the return of Davy Jones later this year.

DVD Review: ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ Volume 1 and 2

DVD Review: 'Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes' Volume 1 and 2

Iron Man is my favorite superhero of all time. Brilliant, fearless and flawed. A perfect example of the “Marvel Way” of creating characters and storytelling. That said, The Avengers is my supergroup of choice. Not only do those characters have deep rooted issues but they are are all individuals forgoing the route of the X-men and The Fantastic Four that have team uniforms. They are strong willed individuals who come together to fight for the common good while at times having a fair amount of friction in between their egos. They mimic life “in the office”. Some of them get along ok, while others… well, you know where I’m going with that one. The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Volume 1 and 2 capture the essence of my favorite band of heroes. Great animation, voice acting, sound design and excellent writing make this series perfect for the entire family.

It’s not just kids stuff… The animation has got attitude. Gone are the days of the cheesy “Amazing Friends” style of the 1980s. Animators chose a slightly exaggerated comic look and married elements of Japanese anime for a very edgy feel. Supervising producer Joshua Fine wanted to make a bridge the Marvel film characters with the comic book Marvel Universe. I believe he and his staff did a brilliant job in doing just that. Iconic characters had their signature looks and secondary characters who make brief appearances in the series are easily recognizable. This makes this series extremely accessable to all fans – those who are hardcore fans of the books and those who know of the characters strictly from the feature films.

Who are The Avengers? They are Earth’s mightiest heroes, formed to fight the foes no single hero could withstand. The Avengers are the most prestigious and powerful super-hero team in the world, an ever-shifting assemblage of super-beings, adventurers and crime fighters devoted to protecting the planet from menaces beyond the scope of conventional authorities. – Marvel Universe Wiki

The voice acting is equally as good.  Veteran voice actors include Rick D. Wasserman (Planet Hulk, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, “House M.D.”) as Thor, Brian Bloom (The A Team, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2) as Captain America, Fred Tatasciore (Tron: Evolution, Hulk Vs., “Wolverine and the X-Men”) as The Hulk, Wally Wingert (“The Family Guy,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”) as Ant Man, and Phil Lamarr (“Mad TV,” “Futurama”) as Jarvis. I especially like the job Eric Loomis did voicing Iron Man/Tony Stark channeling Robert Downey Jr.’s inflections and cocky attitude from the recent blockbusters.

DVD Review: 'Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes' Volume 1 and 2

Being a bit of an audiophile myself, I must give props to the sound designers. Mike Draghi and his team did an outstanding job with the sound effects with perfect mixes of explosions, gun fire and those famous Iron Man repulsor beams. Coupled with those sound effects is the original music by Guy Michelmore adding the perfect vibe and further enhancing the story.

Speaking of story, veteran comic book writer Christopher Yost, represented the source material well. The origin episodes of each of the principal Avengers were well done. Entertaining, quick and to the point. Other live action series could do well to follow this example. They crammed a lot into every episode with perfect pacing. I really appreciated how each story has a few layers of depth as well as story arcs that span over several episodes. I never thought the series watered story lines down too much for a younger audience. I eagerly looked forward to each new episode and look forward to the next release.

Congratulations to Marvel Animation, Joshua Fine and the team who put The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes series together. These DVDs make great primer if you’re looking to get the rest of your family introduced into the Marvel Universe and all of its connective tissue. The well told stories and killer animation have made me a “true believer” in your series and look forward to the next season! Excelsior!
