Disney’s Tangled Gets Sequel – Tangled Ever After

Disney's Tangled Gets Sequel - Tangled Ever After

Great News Tangled Fans! Disney will release a sequel to its 2010 animated film ‘Tangled’ entitled ‘Tangled Ever After.’ The short film will pick up where the last film left off and will feature the voices of Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi again.

No official plot has been released yet but it appears Disney is milking this cash cow dry. I for one thought Tangled ended perfectly and don’t really feel the need to continue from where Rapunzel and Flynn left off. Unlike the movie Disney is heading the Mini Series route and not a full fledged movie or tv show.

It is aimed for a spring 2012 release on the Disney Channel.

Oldies But Goodies – Five Things Seniors Look For In A Resort

Oldies But Goodies - Five Things Seniors Look For In A Resort

When traveling to Walt Disney World, you may be surprised to learn that we Oldies look for different things in a resort than a lot of other groups. Most of us have spent many, many (did I mention many) decades working very hard to get to this point in our lives and we expect to be well treated. Also, in most instances, we are willing to pay what it takes to have our expectations met. With Disney, you generally find the service you need but a lot of what you have learned to expect from your visit stems from your surroundings. Let’s take a look at what Seniors think is most important in a resort:

  1. Relaxing Atmosphere: We go on vacation to relax. Certainly we love being in the parks but when that is through each day we do not want to come back to a resort where chaos reigns (provided by some guests of course). I love children as much as anyone but when you get to be our age you need peace and quiet to recharge for the next day.
  2. Convenient Transportation:  I’m a huge fan of the Walt Disney World transportation system. When you consider how many people they move every day of the year it works remarkably well. I love the Monorail but I think boat transportation is at least as good and there are a lot more options. I even like the bus system and would never even consider renting a car. I did it once and we spent $250 for transportation to and from the airport, the rest of the trip the car was parked.
  3. Good Dining Options: This is where the Deluxe category has the advantage hands down. Oldies can only eat so much counter service food (although WDW has some excellent options here) and there are times when we leave a park early so the only option is to travel to another resort or head back to your own resort for a relaxing meal and a stroll. Good dining options are important!! We have stayed at quite a few resorts and have recently found that the Moderate category also has good table service options in several cases. For us, good food = good visit!!
  4. Well Maintained Grounds: A leisurely stroll in a beautifully landscaped area can do as much to refresh a senior as a nap (although I have nothing against a good nap). Depending on your tastes, from tropical to the bayous of the south, Walt Disney World has a place that will meet your needs. Do some research and find the style that suits your style! One thing you can count on is that Disney does it right.
  5. Pool Options: All Disney resorts have delightful pools but many of the main pools do not meet a senior’s needs in that they are often crowded with very active people. Many resorts not only have that main or feature pool but they also have some quiet pools scattered around the grounds. Oldies like quiet pools – it gives us a chance to cool off and prepare for the rest of the day/week!!

I’m not sure if everyone will agree but these are the things that are important to me as a Senior at Walt Disney World resorts. I believe a lot of Oldies look for similar things and enjoy them when they find them. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Ask a Disney Question: Dining Options for People with Diabetes.

Ask a Disney Question: Dining Options for People with Diabetes.

Tom W. asks:  Are there many dining options for Diabetics? Any specific restaurants that serve sugar free desserts?

Hi, Tom. Thanks for your question. One thing I like about doing “Ask a Disney Question” is that it really gets me thinking, especially when the topic is one that I don’t have a lot of personal experience in. This is one such topic and a useful one at that.  There are plenty of dining and dessert options for diabetics at Disney World, particularly at  table service restaurants.  Dessert selection at counter service places is not the best, but regular dessert options at these places can be hit and miss as well.  Most offer a sugar free brownie; we’ve heard reports that it “tastes great” and and that it “Could be used as a door stopper.  A tasteless door stopper.”  If you want to partake of this brownie of dubious reputation and don’t see it on the menu, just ask for it.  You can also get all fruit bars at ice cream carts located throughout the parks.

If you’re using the dining plan, you’ll get a dessert with each meal.  Obviously, this  can pose something of a problem for people with diabetes.  One way around this is to eat at a counter service restaurant that has fruit or sugar-free yogurt as a dessert option.   You can find detailed information about what counts as a dessert alternative on the Disboards restaurants forum.  I like Passporter’s restaurant forum as well.   The chefs at table service restaurants usually have a house-made sugar free dessert option.  Depending on the restaurant it can be as simple as a fruit sorbet to an elaborate dessert with presentation and taste worthy of the best restaurants anywhere.  Here are a few places we’ve heard really good things about from people with diabetes:

  • Cosmic Rays serves rotisserie chicken, a nice change from nuggets and burgers and a great source of lean protein.
  • You can ask to have your Tonga Toast at Kona Cafe without the sugar coating and use a sugar free syrup.
  • The Wave, which takes a fresh, healthy approach to dining, rewards you for your healthy choices by serving decadent desserts. Their sugar free choices consistently get good reviews on Disney message boards.  Try the sugar free trio with creme brulee.
  • Yachtsman Steakhouse has a sugar-free mango cheesecake with a chocolate sauce on the side that is the talk of many Disney message boards.  The chocolate sauce that comes with it is reportedly to die for.  I’ve also heard the chef occasionally makes a chocolate cake that is so good you can’t tell it’s not made with sugar.
  • Even the Wishes Dessert Party has sugar-free options.  Make sure when you make the reservation that you let them know what your needs are. When you check-in, let the hostess know as well and she’ll provide you with information and assistance. All the items are clearly marked, so you’ll know which are sugar free and which are verboten.

I posted some questions on Disney message forums and here are some tips that visitors with diabetes shared:

  • Don’t stop testing just because you’re on vacation.  It’s actually more important to test to see how your body is reacting to the sun and heat, changes in your diet, and possibly more walking than one is normally used to.
  • This is a big one:  Make sure when you make your ADR that you request a sugar free dessert. Call again the day before to confirm and make note of it again when you check in.
  • One thing I heard a lot was to pack twice as many supplies as you think you’ll need.  Put them in separate bags so that if one gets lost, you’ll still have what you need.
  • If you’re staying at a value resort, you can ask for a free refrigerator for your insulin and other supplies that need to be refrigerated.

Finally, AllEars has a page for people with Diabetes who are touring Disney.  They also have menus for every restaurant at Disney World, so you’ll have an idea of what’s available.  Keep in mind that these menus rarely list the sugar free dessert option.

Most Unusual Disney Beads

Most Unusual Disney BeadsI love how Disney is always changing things up. Every time I visit, I discover something new; that’s one of the reasons I return trip after trip.

Last weekend it happened again. I was on my last fact-checking trip for the 2012 edition of my book Beyond the Attractions: A Guide to Walt Disney World with Preschoolers. I made my tour of Epcot’s World Showcase and happened upon a stand in the Outpost area that I had never seen before. Beaded jewelry was being sold. It was lovely but not being a jewelry-wearer myself, I was prepared to keep walking. That is until something caught my eye and caused me to pause. There was a “String Your Own Beads” option where guests could select beads and custom design their own bracelet or necklace for about $10-20. Now we were getting somewhere; this would be a nice addition to my Hidden Activities chapter.

It seems like this would be the end of my article, doesn’t it? But it’s not. With Disney there is usually more than meets the eye and this stand is no exception.

Walt Disney World collects unused colorful papers such as park maps. They then support the local community in Uganda by shipping the papers to skilled artisans who hand roll the papers into the colorful beads that you see in Epcot’s Outpost area.

Leave it to Disney to take something nice and plus it up to make it extraordinary.

You Can Now Purchase Annual Passes at Your Resort.

Great news. Our friends at Touring Plans is reporting you can now purchase annual passes at your resort’s concierge desk, taking a lot of hassle out of buying an AP.

In the past, you had to take your voucher to the park ticket booth. This wasn’t a huge deal, except it meant you also had to deal with lines and possibly have to pay for parking.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m ready to go to the parks, I need to get there NOW!  Now you can just take your voucher (that you bought at the Disney store or online) and activate your pass right there in the resort.

A super convenient benefit for passholders.

Eating Vegetarian and Vegan at Disney World.

Eating Vegetarian and Vegan at Disney World.

If you’re a vegetarian, you know what it’s like to be resigned to the one dish on the menu that serves as that restaurant’s sole vegetarian entrée. In fact, in most restaurants you’ll encounter the same “vegetarian” dish over and over: Some type of pasta loaded with cheese, maybe sprinkled with a few vegetables. There’s no craft or imagination in that at all and it’s easy to feel left out of a special dining experience when that’s all you can get. The good news for those traveling to Disney World is that they’re great at accommodating guests with any number of food requests. This is true particularly at Disney table service restaurants, where you’ll find chefs who are happy to test their skills and creativity by making you a dish that’s the envy of the meat eaters at your table.

Counter service is somewhat more limited than table service, but you’ll find at least one vegetarian option in every park, sometimes more. Most Counter Service places, like Cosmic Ray’s in the Magic Kingdom, have vegan veggie burgers that can be doctored up with toppings from the fixing’s bar. The bun is not vegan, but you can request a vegan bun.  All counter service locations will allow you to leave off cheese and  mayo or switch out salad dressings.  You can buy soy milk just about anywhere milk is sold at Disney World.  We’ve had luck at the following counter service restaurants:

  • Magic Kingdom, the Tomorrowland Terrace Noodle Station has a great tofu and rice dish. Columbia Harbor House has a healthy veggie sandwich called the Lighthouse Sandwich and vegetarian chilli. Both get high marks on Disney message boards. You can buy Rice Dream and Tofutti at the ice cream parlor on Main Street as well as at other places in on property.  Pinocchio Village Haus and Casey’s Corner, popular among meat eaters, have very little for vegetarians.
  • Epcot is a great choice for vegetarians all around and the park where you can find consistently good CS meals. Vegetarians will especially like the  selection in the China and Morocco pavilions. Perhaps the best choice for vegetarians is Sunshine Seasons in Futureworld. This is one of the most popular CS restaurants in all of Disney World and for good reason: There’s a wide selection of food that’s consistently fresh, tasty, and at times, innovative for theme park fare, such as a salad of roasted beets and goat cheese. Finally the new Epcot spots La Hacienda de San Angel and Via Napoli have some great vegetarian meals I have yet to try.
  • Disney Hollywood Studios: CS at DHS is pretty limited for vegetarians. Both Backlot Express and Studio Catering Company have a grilled veggie sandwich on a ciabatta roll that’s very good. Toy Story Pizza Planet sells cheese pizzas. It’s one of the most maligned places to eat on Disney property, but I actually don’t think it’s too bad; there’s outdoor seating if it’s too loud inside for you. Be sure to check out Anaheim Produce for healthy snacks like fruit, veggies and dips, and trail mix. There is virtually nothing for vegetarians at ABC Commissary, Fairfax Fair, and, not surprisingly, at the Toluca Turkey Leg Company. If you want to eat well on a day you’re visiting DHS, consider a table service restaurant.
  • Animal Kingdom: Ironically, the worst park for a vegetarian. Try the cheese pizza at Pizzafari, the veggie burger at Restaurantosoarus the vegetarian eggroll at Safari Eggroll near Flights of Wonder. Yes, the pickings are that slim that I’m recommending a vegetarian eggroll from a cart. If you’re spending all day in AK, consider doing a table service restaurant like Tusker House, which is a buffet with a lot of vegetarian sides, or Rainforest Café. I’m not crazy about Rainforest Café because it’s loud, but kids love it and it’s wildly popular. They have a decent Portobello mushroom burger and a sweet and sour stir-fry. Prices are reasonable for dining in the parks.
  • Wolfgang Puck Express in Downtown Disney has excellent vegan and vegetarian options.  It’s on the dining plan.

Don’t hesitate to treat yourself to a nice table service restaurant while you’re visiting the World. All of these restaurants have something on the menu for vegetarians, although it is usually limited to one entrée, so you may want to ask for a special meal. Also, don’t hesitate to ask for meat to be removed from salads or pasta dishes. Both wdwinfo and allears have updated menus that you can check out before you make your advanced dining reservations (ADRS). Call 407-WDW-DINE or go to the official Disney website to make your reservations online.

This is probably the most important piece of information for vegetarian diners: If you don’t see something on a table service menu you like, have it noted when you make your ADR that you are requesting a vegetarian entrée. You can also email Disney at [email protected] and request a special diet worksheet. Fill it out  and fax or email it back.  For added comfort, you can call again 72 hours before your ADR. In some cases, you’ll be allowed to speak to the chef about your needs and your tastes. Almost all restaurants will provide you with something unique and different; if you’re an adventurous eater, it’s a fun opportunity for the chef to flex her muscles and try something new that fits into the theme of the restaurant. The only places I’ve heard people having problems with this are at the buffets, where there are generally enough meat-free options to satisfy most diners. If you’re worried that a buffet won’t meet your needs, it doesn’t hurt to ask for a special meal or side. Often, the chef will take you around the buffet and let you know what is safe for you to eat.

Dishes we’ve heard great things about include:

  • The vegetarian sushi at California Grill. It’s not on the menu but a friend recently had this and was served a platter of sushi almost too beautiful to eat. Not only did it taste amazing, it was very reasonably priced.
  • Try The Wave at the Contemporary Resort, a quick walk or ride on the monorail from the Magic Kingdom, for lunch or dinner. It’s not too difficult to get an ADR even close to your trip and the chef is trying a lot of new and innovative things. The Wave doesn’t always knock it out of the ballpark, but this place keeps getting better and better and I really respect what they’re trying to do with local foods and healthy choices.
  • Artists Point is a quiet, pretty restaurant in the Wilderness Lodge. It’s one of my favorite places on site and like the Wave, it’s fairly easy to get an ADR. The potato chive pots stickers have been on the menu for a couple of years and are delicious. The smoky Portobello soup is one of the best things I’ve ever eaten, but the vegetarians at our table found out the hard way it’s made from chicken stock. I’ve heard that you can call ahead and ask for this to be made with a vegetarian stock, but I haven’t tried it yet.
  • All the restaurants at Animal Kingdom Lodge get great reviews from vegetarians. It’s worth a trip to the resort even if you aren’t staying there (plus, the resort itself is gorgeous, so give yourself time to look around). Sanaa and Jiko, one of the top rated restaurants in Disney World, both have separate menus for vegan and vegetarian guests. Boma, easily the best buffet at WDW, has plenty of vegetarian options.
  • The dinner buffet at 1900 Park Fare has some great vegetarian choices such as cold soba noodle salad, so don’t hesitate to make an ADR for the character dinner there—it’s one of the best on property.
  • Ohana in the Polynesian has a multi-course vegetarian option that’s reportedly delicious.
  • Finally, for a real treat, the vegetarian menu at Victoria and Albert’s gets rave reviews.

Need more information?  For menus, check out WDWinfo.com and allears.net. Both sites update their menus frequently although it’s likely your menu at the restaurant will have additional choices.  Remember that you can make ADRs for Disney sit down restaurants 180-days before your arrival.   You can make ADRs by calling 407-WDW-DINE or at the official Disney website here.   To hear a first-hand account of vegetarian dining at  Dsiney World, listen to the WDWToday podcast here.   The restaurant boards at Disboards and Passporter have very active, friendly forums where you can read dining reviews and ask questions.

Thanks to Chip and Co. reader Carrie who inspried this question.  We appreciate your input!

Top 5 Parade Viewing Areas at Disney World

Top 5 Parade Viewing Areas at Disney World

Could there be only FIVE? Of course not, but calling this a Top Fourty-Three just wouldn’t have the same ring to it! Actually, I don’t really know exactly how many Parade viewing areas there are, but I suppose any spot that lets you see the characters is a good one.

To keep this essay under 15,000 words, however, I’m only going to cover the Top Five. Beginning with:

5. Wherever there is a space

Right off the bat, I have to admit that I have never staked out a ‘territory’ for parade watching. It seems that in most cases, if you want a ‘good’ spot, you have to stake your claim one to two hours before the parade begins. I’m sorry, but that just takes too much time out of my Disney experience!

But I do agree that people who show up two minutes before the parade begins only to shove their way to the front are ignorant and should be corrected. Then removed! Now, I am someone who wanders over to the parade route just before it begins, but I always keep moving until I find an empty spot. In my view, anywhere can be a good spot. I usually put my wife in front of me (because she’s short!) and then I stand directly behind her, so we in reality take up only one spot.

And being over six foot tall in shoes, I try to regard shorter people behind me if I can. And I always keep my camera at eye level, so as not to block the view of others. For this last-minute parade viewing technique, I find Frontierland to be the best, and least crowded, area.

Of course, this is just what I do for parades. But my buddy Mike uses this method too. I also asked some of my other friends here at Chip and Company what they thought were the best spots for parade viewing, and I now give you their ideas in the remaining top four spots:

4. In the Hub

Several people I interviewed said that this was a great place. I have tried it myself and have to agree. The advantage to this spot is that you can easily move around the circle, following a particular float if you wish. For filming, you can rotate your shots with ease, especially if you are rather tall and stand in the center.

Keep in mind that most of the action in a parade takes place up on the floats, which makes it easy to see. However, this location may make it difficult to see walking characters unless you are on the outer rim of the Hub.

And when it’s all over, you can go in any direction for more Disney magic!

3. In front of the Hall of Presidents

Ken finds this to be the best spot, perhaps because you won’t get a lot of people in your shots as you photograph the parades as it is directly across from the wheelchair area on Main Street. And hey, if you get tired, maybe you can sit down in one of the chairs! But be sure to stand if one of the animatronic figures comes out of The Hall of Presidents!

Top 5 Parade Viewing Areas at Disney World

2. In front of the Barber Shop

For this one, Kristen recommends this spot as the best in World, especially for nighttime parades. Due to your proximity to the main entrance you get a lot of one-on-one with the walking characters. She mentioned that her daughter has been spoken to, even over the loud speaker (by Pete on the Pete’s Dragon float). And this has happened often since they’ve started standing there!

So in front of the Barber Shop is definitely  a good spot! But only good enough for the number two spot on the Top Five.

1. Upstairs on the Train Station platform

This idea never occurred to me, but it’s so awesome it takes the number one spot! Melisa Lynn recommends it, not only for parade watching, but for the Wishes fireworks as well. But be sure to get there one to two hours early if you want a banister spot. The Train Station can be quite busy!

Think about it: An elevated viewing platform with no one in front of you. Perfect point-of-view photograph opportunities (just don’t stand directly in line with the flag pole). And the ability to see almost the whole parade at once. And when it’s all over, you can jump on the train for one last trip around The Magic Kingdom!

And that brings another Top Five to a close. If you feel like sharing your best parade viewing spot, just click on the comments and let us know about it. Hey, maybe we’ll be standing next to each other at the next Disney Parade!

Best Bathrooms in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

You just sat down to lunch and you hear it… “Mom, I need to go to the bathroom”. You look at your spouse who shrugs and you unfold your giant Disney map to locate the closest loo. Disney maps are really not all that user friendly for the frequent bathroom visitor. You finally locate it and its covered up (aka, a lot of people are in there!) As your child does the “pee-pee dance” and you tell them to “keep holding, keeeeeppp holding….”. Sure would be nice if you knew where the less crowded bathrooms were.

Disney Diva, here to help.

Now I can’t guarantee that if you go in June, or December when Touring Plans.com says that the crowd is a 10 out of 10, that you won’t have a wait, but there are a few places that if you’re willing to walk just a little further you can cut down your wait significantly.

If you’re in the Main Street area…

Front of the park: When you first walk into the park look to your left. There will be a visitors center and the fire-station is close to that. Between those two is a good bathroom. Because it is so close to the front of the park most people walk right past it, unless its around a parade time or park-closing. Its set back a bit so its less recognizable.

Closer to the the hubcap (the big circle in front of Cinderellas castle)

If you look to your LEFT you will see Caseys’ Corner Hotdogs, walk in that direction where the picnic tables are. Just on the other side of Caseys you will find a great bathroom and a nice place to just sit and relax. The bathroom is literally right between Caseys and The Crystal Palace.

If you walk to your right (toward tomorrowland) there are actually TWO sets of bathrooms there. One is just on the other side of the Plaza restaurant. Its set back a little. The second is one of my FAVORITES!!!

**DIVA FAVORITE** TOMORROWLAND TERRACE BATHROOM – As you go up a slight incline you’ll come up to a restaurant that I have only seen open ONE TIME in all my many trips to WDW. Its called the Tomorrowland Terrace Noodle-Station. On the RIGHT of the station is the bathroom. This bathroom is very rarely used (so it doesn’t stink either) and I’ve never had a wait. The cut-through through tomorrowland terrace is also the least-crowded way to move from Mainstreet to Tomorrowland.

If you’re on the Tommorowland side of Fantasyland.

Directly across from The Mad Hatters Teacups is a pathway that would lead you all the way to the castle. There is a building on your right that is done in a more storybook form (while the one on your right is very tomorrowand). On the BACK SIDE of that storybook building is a great bathroom, always clean and rarely used.

If you’re on the Liberty Square side of Fantastyland.

On the side of Pinnochios Village Haus (resturant) there are good bathrooms. I think they sort of blend in so people don’t use them as frequently because they think its just a resturant.

Also on the OTHER side of Peter Pans extremely long que there are some bathrooms. It really depends on the time of the day whether they are busy or not, but in that area there is a SERIOUS bottleneck of traffic (they’re about to do construction actually to fix that) so I wouldn’t use that one unless your child is just about to burst.

If you’re in Frontierland.

It’s a bit of a walk, but ironically the best bathrooms are just on the exit of splash mountain. When you normally go to the right you veer to the left to enter the que, but if you went straight you’d see a chlds playground under the train tracks. if you continue straight there are some excellent bathrooms on your right. There seems like there would be a lot of traffic from those, but really people don’t really stop as they leave the ride.

If you can sneak in to Pecos Bills they’ve got great (and has great air conditioning) bathrooms in there, but they’ve been monitoring their area a lot more (read Beware the Seat Police)

If you are in Adventureland

You really should hit the bathroom between Casey’s Corner & Crystal Palace on the walkway to Adventureland because (in my opinion) theres not a really good bathroom in Adventureland.

If you are in Tomorrowland

Really the bathrooms on the extremes of Tomorrowland are the least crowded. The one near the terrace and the one near mad-hatters tea-cups I most prefer. But there is another that is stuck between the icecream shop and the Merchant of Venus gift shop that often goes unnoticed.

And there you go, the best bathrooms in Magic Kingdom. Plan accordingly because an accident without a change of clothes is the worst case scenario at Walt Disney World!
