To be released beginning on September 12 internationally and on September 16 in North America, the nine-disc collection brings the wonder of the entire Saga direct to your living room, where you can revisit all of your favorite Star Wars moments — in gorgeous high definition and with pristine, 6.1 DTS Surround Sound. Dive deeper into the universe with an unprecedented 40+ hours of special features, highlighted by never-before-seen content sourced from the Lucasfilm archives.

The comprehensive collection also features numerous deleted, extended and alternate scenes, new documentaries and a cross-section of the countless Star Wars spoofs that have appeared in pop culture over the past three decades. STAR WARS: THE COMPLETE SAGA ON BLU-RAY is presented in widescreen with 6.1 DTS Surround Sound. Special features include:

Things to do while waiting in line at Walt Disney World with your Toddler

As parents we have all been here… You are at Walt Disney World waiting in line in the Florida heat with your family and little ones are restless. They are hanging on the ropes, walking away from the queue to play with something they shouldn’t, or even cutting people in line just so they don’t have to stand there for them must seem like forever.

While we are avid Fast Pass and Touring Plans “Lines” users, and we try to goto the parks on non busy times of the year..If that even exists anymore. We found it hard to keep our little one entertained when we did have to wait in line. From standing in line looking at the other parents I can see we weren’t the only ones.

I was successful with coming up with several ways to keep our toddler busy to help pass the time. I  would like to share with you a list of a few ways to keep your little one preoccupied and happy while you are waiting on having fun on a Disney ride or attraction.

  1. Cheerios on Dental Floss – This idea was given to me by a good friend Michelle. We met her family at the Magic Kingdom about half way through our vacation last spring and she had a ziplock baggie full of these healthy necklaces for the little ones. All she did was take a long piece of dental floss (plain or mint doesn’t matter) and string fruity cheerios through it. You can use Fruit Loops, Chocolate Cheerios, or any other kind of cereal with a hole in the middle. This idea was a life saver! The kids were behaving and cleaning their teeth at the same time. Thanks Shelly!
  2. Coloring Apps on Droid or iPhone – I am an avid Droid user, I tweet, I Stream live video, I listen to Music from Pandora, you name it. It is my lifeline. While we were down at DisneyWorld a few months ago I ran across a few Droid Apps that were perfect for a toddler. One was called Zebrapaint. It is just a basic digital coloring book. Most of our bus rides to and from the park our lass was busy coloring on mommy or daddy’s phone. Toddler Lock was another good one. They both were very effective while standing in line. So check your smart phone and see what kinda apps are available to help keep your kids occupied while standing in line.Quick Tip – Be sure to bring your cell phone charger with you to the park. With a toddler drawing on your phone while waiting in line it will in no time drain your battery, or you can get Energizer Battery Pack to quick charge your batteries.
  3. Doodle Pad or Etch a Sketch – I am sure most of us have several of these in your house. All kids love to draw. Now if you goto a toy store or Toys R Us there are countless flavors of doodle pads available. From Etch a Sketch, to Crayola Glow Station, and even Aqua Doodle these are hours of good fun and small enough to keep in a purse or book bag. It’s a great way to keep your toddler from climbing the walls anywhere, and better than the old pen and paper.
  4. Mini Character Sets – Disney has just about every movie covered as far as a Mini Character Set goes. They are great for around 12$ (or alot of times we catch them on sale for 9$) we get a whole set of Disney Characters to play with. Some of my Disney photos I have posted on the site if you look at the food pictures you will see Disney Princesses or Mini My Little Pony dolls on the table. In the car, at restaurants, waiting in line these are great for both boys and girls. It does wonders for their imagainations too!
  5. Leap Frog Learning Systems – Our little one has grown up on Leap Frog. They do an excellent job teaching kids while having fun at the same time. One of my sweet peas favorite toys is the Leap Frog Scribble & Write. She is learning her upper case and lower case letters, drawing different objects, and playing guessing games. It is very portable and the puppy on there is very cute..Ruff Ruff.. Another great teaching toy is the Leap Frog Leapster Learning Systems. The Leapster handhelds offers a robust learning experience through built-in tutorials and learning levels that adapt automatically to your child’s pace. Its touch screen and stylus help develop motor skills used in writing, while its compact design makes traveling easy. There are tons of teaching games from all kinds of Disney Characters for these systems as long as you don’t mind spending a little money. This was one of the best investments we have ever made for our child!

I hope this small list will help you keep your toddler busy the next time you are waiting in line at one of the Disney Parks. I find that if she is happy it can make for a great day, but if she is fussy it makes for a horrible experience even if it’s at the greatest place on Earth.

If you have any other tips let me know in the comment section below.

Leaving the Kids at Home

What I’m about to say is such sacrilege that it tears at the very fabric that holds this country together.  In fact, I suggest that you don’t proceed any further without locking the doors and drawing the shades.    It’s this:  I love going to  Disney World without my kids.  There, I’ve said it.  It’s true.  Okay, truth is, I love going with my kids as well.  I love watching their reactions, how excited they are over the smallest thing.  I enjoy the opportunity to slow down with them and not worry about everyday concerns.  But on occasion, I’ve been known to enjoy a grown-up only trip to Disney World and other than a few guilt-inducing moments, I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.  And I think you should as well.

The first time I told a group of mothers about this, I was a little nervous.  I wondered if they’d judge me.  Perhaps they’d wonder amongst themselves, after I left the room, what other kind of activities I got up to when my children weren’t around.  Maybe I had a bunch of tattoos, drove a motorcycle, and considered Happy Meals a food group!   Perhaps I even–gasp–let my kids play with plastic toys that weren’t age appropriate!  I was understandably concerned, so I let my secret out slowly.

Confessing your love for Disney World in a neighborhood like mine isn’t that big of a deal.  It’s the kind place where people tend to go often. But how, I wondered, would they react if I told them I was going without the kids?  I brought it up one morning at the bus stop, kicking the ground with one of my Mickey Crocs.  “So,”  I said.  “I’m going to Disney World next month with some of my girlfriends.”  “You’re not taking the kids?” a little brunette Midwesterner asked.  “No,”  I answered, a little worried.  “I’ve always wanted to do that,” she replied.  And then she proceeded to tell me about all the things she would do if she went on a trip to Disney without her kids.  And do you know what the surprising thing is?  Almost every parent I’ve mentioned this to has said the same thing:  I’ve always wanted to do that.

Now let me just say up front that I don’t necessarily advocate going to Disney World without your kids if you don’t go that often.   Disney is set up so well for families, it’s a great place to relax and connect.  And it really is a place where you make memories for a lifetime.  But if you’re like me and you have little kids, you can’t help but look at bit longingly at the restaurants and rides you can’t experience with small children, not to mention the thought of relaxing back at the resort.

I think a lot of people who aren’t familiar with Disney World would assume there isn’t a lot for adults to do.  This couldn’t be more wrong.   Besides all the usual activities in the parks, and believe me, this is a big part of why we go, Disney has great restaurants that are more adult-oriented, live music, golfing, spas, and shopping.  I love walking around Epcot at night and while my days of drinking around the world are long gone (okay, I never made it past England; I have the tolerance of a gnat.), I love the atmosphere; it’s a lively, fun place to people watch, entirely different from during the day.  We always make sure we have a couple of great meals and stay a little late after the park closes to enjoy the peace and quiet of a mostly empty park.   Going to Disney with friends or with your spouse/partner is a great way to experience all the things you usually do, but at a slower pace.   It’s also a great way to do something that would bore the kids, like really looking at all the exhibits in Epcot or taking a behind the scenes tour.  Or if you want, you can just lay by the pool and not have to worry that your boys are dunking their sister or who needs more sunscreen.

When I go to Disney without the kids, it’s usually a spur of the moment budget trip.   We’re close enough that we can fly down on a Friday night, stay at a value, and come back that Sunday night.  We can cram a lot of fun into 48 hours.   And sure, I’ve felt a little guilty.  But then I call my husband and the kids are running around laughing  and my husband is confused about the casserole I left for them and I know that we’re all going in a few months and I think, “They’re going to be fine.”   Then I go ride Splash Mountain again for the third time.  I’m not going to say it’s better than going with the kids.  It’s different.   And if you can do it, I say go for it.

Email her at [email protected] for information on how you can get a free $100, $50, or  $25 Disney gift card when you book a new vacation.  Don’t forget, free dining for August –  September 2011 is now available.

WDW Veteran Visitors: It’s a Given

WDW Veteran Visitors: It's a Given

My family and I are what is known as Veteran Visitors to Walt Disney World. During our annual trips, there are traditional practices we always tend to follow even though we don’t plan it that way. Some things are just “givens” when we visit.

Here are some examples:

It’s a given that we will be visiting the Magic Kingdom as our first park.

It’s a given that we will immediately head to Asia whenever we enter the Animal Kingdom park, so we can enjoy Everest first thing.

It’s a given that when we visit the Hollywood Studios, my daughter and I will at some time during the day enjoy “The Voyage of the Little Mermaid” while our macho males in the family enjoy the Stunt Spectacular or Indiana Jones.

It’s a given that if we stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, we will get a drink from the Mara and sit out by the pool on our first night there.

It’s a given that we will have Family Pasta Night with the create-your-own-pasta at the Riverside Mill if we stay at the Port Orleans Riverside.

It’s a given that we will never ride single rider on Test Track because my kids have never been willing to split up the family.

It’s a given that we will enjoy a Monorail Mania Meal on one of the nights during our trip.

It’s a given that we will ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at least twice during the 3:00 parade at MK.

It’s a given that we will visit ‘Ohana on the last night of our trip.

It’s a given that we will be at Downtown Disney on the day we leave to purchase souvenirs at the World of Disney and a new Christmas ornament for each of us at Days of Christmas.

That’s just the way it is. Those “givens” are what makes visiting Walt Disney World just like home for us as veteran visitors. What are your family’s givens? Share them with us.

Oldies But Goodies – Tables In Wonderland, Does It Fit Your Style.

Oldies But Goodies - Tables In Wonderland, Does It Fit Your Style.

Oldies and all other folks put quite a lot of time making decisions about many things before embarking on a Walt Disney World visit. One of these items is dining, after all, everyone has to eat. I’m going to give you some numbers to give you an idea what the Disney Dining Plan (DDP) costs per adult per night so you can compare the benefits of the DDP to the Tables In Wonderland Program.

The DDP includes 1 table service credit, one counter service credit, and one snack credit for approximately $46 per person per night. The Deluxe Dining Plan (DxDP) takes this to 3 table service credits and two snack credits per night and brings the cost to $79 per night.  You may add the Wine and Dine package giving you 1 wine entitlement per night per room for an additional $40 per night. So if you like table service dining and go the whole route, the cost is approximately $99 per person per night (and does not include cocktails). Depending on your dining and beverage preferences this can add up quickly. Please remember that Disney Signature Restaurants require 2 credits per meal.

Enter Tables In Wonderland (TIW) which costs you a total of $100 ($75 if you are an Annual Passholder). What does this get you? You get a full 20% discount on food and beverage (yes alcohol too) purchases in most Disney Table Service Restaurants and many of the lounges. It is also important to note that in resorts with no table service restaurants the TIW discount of 20% also applies at the food courts. You can find a current listing of TIW restaurants here (lounges too). The discounts apply for the TIW card holder and 9 additional people. Technically, there can only be one guest check but you MAY be able to sweet talk your server into two if that’s how it works for you. Another important point, if you use TIW they automatically add an 18% gratuity based on the non discounted price of the meal (not at the food courts) after all, the server and staff have to work just as hard to serve a discounted meal as a discounted meal so in my opinion they should be compensated that way. Dinner Shows are also included but only for the last scheduled show of the day.

If you don’t eat at Signature restaurants and are disciplined enough to stick to only using the allotted dining credits on your visit then the DDP can be very economical. I do not have that kind of self control because there are way too many amazing dining experiences to be had at Walt Disney World. We have used TIW before and will be using it again on our October visit. It offers some distinct advantages that the DDP’s do not have. If you enjoy a cocktail as well as wine with your meals – 20% discount. If you enjoy Signature restaurants there is no penalty (no credits involved) – 20% discount. You are not forced to have extra food that you might not want, you order exactly what you want, no more or no less – 20% discount. I guess the only complaint I hear from people is that you don’t really get a 20% discount but only a 2% discount because of the included tip. I tell those folks that they will likely tip in the 18% range even on the DDP’s because that is the industry standard for the type of excellent service you get at a Disney Restaurant. I hope you find this information helpful and as always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Disney’s Dumbo 70th Anniversary Edition Coming to Bluray/DVD/Download

Disney’s Dumbo 70th Anniversary Edition Coming to Bluray/DVD/Download

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment invites audiences to let their spirits soar with the release of the beloved animated classic Dumbo, for the first time ever in high definition as a 70th Anniversary Edition, coming on September 20, 2011. The Academy Award®-winning (1942, Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture) favorite will take flight for the first time with a premium restoration in stunning Blu-ray™ highdefinition featuring pristine 7.1 Digital Theater System High-Def Surround Sound, allowing fans to see more, hear more, interact more and share more of this timeless adventure about believing in yourself.

Dumbo: 70th Anniversary Edition will be available for purchase as a 2-Disc Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack (with the suggested retail price of $39.99 U.S./$44.99 Canada), a 1-Disc DVD (with the suggested retail price of $29.99 U.S./$35.99 Canada), High Definition Movie Download (for the suggested retail price of $39.99 U.S./44.99 Canada) and/or Standard Definition Movie Download (for the suggested retail price of $29.99 U.S./$35.99 Canada). All versions come packed with a variety of special bonus features including such features as deleted scenes, interactive games, audio commentary, behind the scenes details and more.

Faced with the daunting task of restoring the film to its original pristine condition, the Walt Disney Studios Restoration Team turned to the US Library of Congress who store the original 70 year old nitrate camera negative in their film vaults, and for reference, to an original 1941 ‘release’ print, held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Using this rare nitrate “dye-transfer” Technicolor print for color reference, the team was able to restore Dumbo to the color settings most likely approved by Walt Disney himself, which will be seen in their full splendor for the first time in 70years, on the Blu-ray debut.

In addition, the rare film print (housed as part of the UCLA Film and Television Archives collection) proved to be the earliest surviving generation of the original audio for Dumbo which provided a unique source from which to build the new Disney Enhanced Home Theatre (DEHT) mix for the Blu-ray release.

Released theatrically in 1941, Dumbo, Walt Disney’s fourth animated film, was an immediate success with audiences and critics alike. In addition to its Academy Award® for BestMusic, Dumbo was also Oscar®-nominated for Best Song, for the haunting lullaby, “Baby Mine.” Additional songs from the film, written by renowned composer Frank Churchill and lyricist Ned Washington, have become popular standards. They include the infectious “When I See an Elephant Fly,” sung by a chorus of hip crows who befriend Dumbo and his friend, Timothy Mouse, and “Pink Elephants on Parade,” which accompanies Dumbo’s feverish dream-sequence.

Bonus Features:

DVD:

  • Deleted Scene – “The Mouse’s Tale”

Not-So-Scary & Holly-Jolly: Disney Specialty Parties

Not-So-Scary & Holly-Jolly: Disney Specialty Parties

Disney always asks, “What will you celebrate?” but each year they throw in some celebrations of their own!

For guests traveling in October, November and December you can take part in Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party or Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Tickets for both of these events are at an additional cost (advanced purchase price $60.66 for ages 10 and over and $55.33 ages 3-9).

Ticket’s for both parties go on sale May 1st, both parties are very popular and it’s recommended you secure your tickets as early as possible (not to mention you save about $7 per ticket by booking early!)

If you are an Annual Passholder or a Disney Vacation Club Member your discounted rate is $56.40 (ages 10 and over) and $51.07 (ages 3-9). Annual Passholders can purchase up to 4 tickets at this rate, and Disney Vacation Club Members can purchase up to 6.

The parties run from 7pm (you can usually get in earlier!) until midnight and are only for guests with the special event ticket. During Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party you will be given Trick-or-Treat bags and a map to use throughout the Magic Kingdom, each station has different treats! The Halloween parade has a spooky start (listen for the galloping hooves and look for the headless horseman!) The parade also features all your favorite characters in their halloween costumes and a special fireworks show that is NOT to be missed! The Halloween party is also known for unique character meet n’ greets, dance parties with the characters and plenty of costumed guests to admire. Guests are encouraged to dress in costume, but Disney asks nothing that could be offensive to other guests. Rides, attractions and certain dining experiences are also available and are subject to change.

If you prefer something a bit more “jolly” Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is for you! You won’t find a more magical Christmas celebration than the one Mickey hosts. Cinderella’s Castle is enchanted with glowing icicles draped on every peak, Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade features all the characters in their holiday gear and a special appearance by Santa Claus himself. Do NOT miss the Christmas fireworks: Holiday Wishes: Celebrate the Spirit of the Season. Be entertained by Disney characters, shake it with them at the dance parties and enjoy complimentary cookies and hot cocoa at stations all over the park. The cookies and cocoa are abundant and limitless…wear your stretchy pants! If you love Christmas you won’t want to miss this party and watch Disney magic in action as it snows on Mainstreet USA! Rides, attractions and certain dining experiences are also available and are subject to change.

If you are interested in these parties or would like more information call Disney at 407-W-Disney or contact your Disney travel professional. If you haven’t booked your holiday vacation yet, contact Pixie Vacations where the quotes are always free and the service is as magical as the trip you’re about to take!
