Disney World Event Calendar: September and October 2011

Disney World Event Calendar: September and October 2011

Whether ‘Playing the Castle’ or Another Stage Sept. 9-10, 2011 Night of Joy Acts Are Among Contemporary Christian’s Most-Talented

Many Christian music artists consider they’ve really arrived if they “play the Castle” at Disney’s Night of Joy. That being the case, Jeremy Camp, Newsboys, Skillet, Jars of Clay, TobyMac and MercyMe have “really arrived”: Each will be doing a concert on the Cinderella Castle Stage during the Sept. 9-10, 2011, event in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort.

Of course, that’s just one of several stages throughout the park that will be alive with Christian music presented by a total of 16 Christian recording artists over the two nights of the special, after-hours event. And all the performers who have “really arrived” aren’t “playing the Castle”! Here’s what’s in store:

On Friday, Sept. 9, while Jeremy Camp, Newsboys and Skillet each will do an hour-plus show sometime between 7:45 p.m. and 1 a.m. on the Castle Stage, Christian Artist of the Year Francesca Battistelli will be performing elsewhere in Magic Kingdom — as will Group 1 Crew, Sidewalk Prophets, Matthew West and Disciple. Among them, the eight Friday night acts span the musical spectrum from Adult Contemporary and Pop to Praise/Rock, Rock and Hip Hop. Among them, they have amassed 46 Dove Awards and five Grammy Awards.

On Saturday, Sept. 10, Jars of Clay, TobyMac and MercyMe will “play the Castle” while other stages throughout Magic Kingdom will feature New Artist and Male Vocalist of the Year Chris August, Marvin Sapp, Kutless, Sanctus Real and VaShawn Mitchell. It’s a menu filled with musical variety — Gospel to Rock, Hip Hop to Adult Contemporary. As for honors: 24 Dove Awards and three Grammy Awards. (All entertainment is subject to change without notice.)

Night of Joy begins at 7:30 p.m. (following regular park closing) with early entry beginning at 4 p.m. The event runs until 1 a.m.

Both individual and group tickets are available for one night or both nights. Information is available at nightofjoy.com.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Returns Sept. 13 with 23 Nights of Halloween Fun in Magic Kingdom

Halloween’s happiest haunts will be reappearing for a season of “spook-tacular” fun as Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party returns to the Magic Kingdom for 23 select nights between Sept. 13 and Nov. 1, 2011.

The after-hours Magic Kingdom party will once again be immersed in the Halloween spirit, including two entertainment spectaculars created especially for the event:

  • Mickey’s “Boo-to-You” Halloween Parade proceeds down Main Street, U.S.A., heralded by the Headless Horseman and his trusty steed, and trailed by a cavalcade of holiday-themed characters, from Mickey and the gang to Disney villains and the stars of the Haunted Mansion (but make sure to watch out for Hitchhiking Ghosts!).
  • The bewitching “Happy HalloWishes” fireworks spectacular illuminates the sky in bursts of orange and green fireworks, while Cinderella Castle is draped in eerie hues and ghostly apparitions flit along the park’s rooftops.

The Boo-to-you Parade takes place at 8:15 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. with HalloWishes Fireworks Spectacular in between at 9:30 p.m. Special lighting, music and theming effects combine to transform areas of the park into happy haunted hollows.

The night of ever-so-slightly-frightful fun begins at 7 p.m. and runs until midnight, with guests encouraged to don their favorite Halloween costumes and trick-or-treat around the Magic Kingdom theme park.

In addition to Land-to-Land trick-or-treating, meet and greets with characters and entertainment unique to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, many popular Magic Kingdom attractions — including, of course, Haunted Mansion — are available to experience.

Party dates in 2011 are: Sept. 13, 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30; Oct. 2, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 16, 18, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, 28, 30 and 31; and Nov. 1.

To purchase advance tickets, guests can visit disneyworld.com/halloween or call 407/W-DISNEY. Advance purchase (prior to event day) savings of $6 per ticket are available for Sept. 13, 16, 20, 23, 27, and 30; Oct. 2, 6, 10, 11, 16, 18, 20, 23, 25 and 27; and Nov. 1.

Fans of Epcot International Food & Wine Festival “premium events” can get the party started even before the 45-day festival kicks off.

  • Throughout October and into mid-November, guests can travel to Asia Mondays (Tokyo Dining, Japan pavilion) or Africa Tuesdays (Restaurant Marrakesh, Morocco pavilion) for the festival’s popular Food & Wine Pairings. • Wrapping a day at the festival with a sweet ending is easy to do at “3D” Disney’s Dessert Discovery on designated Fridays at the World ShowPlace Events Pavilion. Participants enjoy a variety of desserts and samplings of cordials certain to please any sweet tooth and top off the experience with VIP viewing of IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth evening entertainment extravaganza. “Sweet Seats” is an exclusive upgraded “3D” experience that includes a private reserved table, early entry, a specialty beverage and an exclusive dessert offering.

16th Epcot Food & Wine Festival Serving Up Menu of New Experiences in Cuisine and Culture during 45-Day Run Beginning Sept. 30, 2011

Exotic island tastes. Craft beers. Cranberries. Tips for dressing up the home décor for holiday entertaining.

These are just a sampling of what’s new at the 16th Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, opening Sept. 30 and continuing for 45 days, through Nov. 13, 2011, at Walt Disney World Resort. The one-of-a-kind festival serves up international cuisine, culture and entertainment from six continents, with more than 25 international marketplaces featuring tapas-sized portions paired with beer, wine and inventive cocktails.

And some of what’s new for 2011 involves the marketplaces:

  • A Hawaii marketplace will cook up Kalua pork sliders and tuna poke with seaweed salad and lotus root chips to team with a refreshing Seven Tiki Mai Tai or a Kona Longboard or Pipeline beer.
  • A Caribbean Islands marketplace will serve ropa vieja with rice and jerk-spiced chicken with mango salsa. A beverage menu featuring a frozen Dragon Berry Colada and frozen Rock Coconut Mojito is sure to conjure steel-drum fantasies.
  • A Portugal marketplace will allow guests to pair a red, white or port wine with calamari salad with olives and smoked paprika or Linguica sausage with onions, peppers and olives.
  • A craft beers marketplace will serve up eight select brews for sampling.

Beyond the marketplaces, a couple of the festival’s new features of note are:

  • HGTV Personalities – Guests can learn from HGTV celebrity designers during 30-minute seminars on festival weekends. There will be tips to create the ultimate entertainment room, tips on how to become an excellent host, tips on holiday table setting, herb and vegetable gardening, and kitchen/dining room designs. Sessions are Friday and Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
  • Cranberry Bog – Recreating the beauty of the cranberry harvest, the new area will tell the story behind the rich agricultural heritage, the harvesting process and the history of the cranberry, a true native North American fruit.

The festival requires Epcot admission, and some experiences during the festival require advance reservations. More information is available at disneyworld.com/foodandwine.

New ‘Untamed’ Dining Adventure Transports Disney Guests to Africa

An all-new dining experience hosted by a Disney animal specialist is available at Sanaa at Kidani Village, located in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge at Walt Disney World Resort. Over lunch, an animal expert reveals facts and myths about wildlife as guests immerse themselves in the culture and flavors of Africa.

There’s no more perfect setting, as Sanaa’s windows frame grazing zebra and giraffes, Ankole Cattle and White-Bearded Wildebeest. The experience accommodates up to 12 guests, offering an intimate, fun insider’s view, with plenty of time for questions.

Adding flavor to the experience: a four-course, African-inspired lunch made in Sanaa’s tandoor ovens. It boasts many delicacies, such as warm naan bread, savory dips, slow-cooked meats, unusual sweets and more.

After dessert, diners venture to a savanna lookout, to observe and learn more about the exotic animals grazing the landscape.

Tampa Bay Bucs Great Derrick Brooks Going to Disney World to Play with the Golf Pros at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic

There will be celebrities, Disney characters and a musical fanfare when the PGA TOUR “goes to Disney World” for the season-ending Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic Oct. 20-23, 2011. There’s also likely to be some drama: The $4.7 million tournament Oct. 20-23 on Disney’s Magnolia and Palm courses will determine the final TOUR money rankings and which players have full exemptions in 2012.

Retired Tampa Bay Bucs linebacker Derrick Brooks is the first celebrity announced as an amateur participating in the Classic during the first and second rounds, played as a pro-am. Nine-time All-Pro Brooks’ National Football League career included 11 Pro Bowl appearances and selection as Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year in 2002, when the Bucs won the Super Bowl.

A tradition of the Classic during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s is returning in 2011: A cadre of characters and the red-and-white-clad Walt Disney World Band will gather at the 18th green to celebrate the tournament winner.

Tournament Chairman Kevin Weickel said adding classic sounds from the legacy of Disney music “is part of making the moment truly unique and special. For many of our champions over the years, the Classic has been their first entrance to the PGA TOUR’s winner’s circle–and that is a memory you really want to make memorable with some pomp!”

That was the case in 2010 when Robert Garrigus came from behind on Sunday to claim his first PGA TOUR win. He became the 17th player to notch his first TOUR victory on Disney’s historic courses, which have hosted the Classic since 1971.

A field of 128 professionals will tee off in the quest for the $846,000 winner’s check. After two rounds, the field will be trimmed to the low 70 scores for the weekend rounds.

A one-day grounds ticket is $10; the weekly tournament badge providing admission to the grounds Oct. 17-Oct. 23 is $20. Parking is free and youth ages 17 and under are free when accompanying a paying adult. More information: childrensmiraclenetworkclassic.com.

Disney ‘world’ of Walt Disney World Moms Panel Expanding; Application Period for 2012 Panel Begins Sept. 12, 2011

The Disney “world” of the Walt Disney World Moms Panel is growing in 2012 to include not just panelists who help plan magical vacations for people heading to Walt Disney World Resort but also for folks wanting to take a Disney Cruise Line cruise, an Adventures By Disney excursion, visit Disney beach resorts or Disneyland Resort … and more.

Candidates for the panel — made up of Disney-loving guests who are the “go to” person for anymore seeking information and advice about “all things Disney” — can apply beginning Sept. 12, 2011, at 9 a.m. ET at DisneyWorldMoms.com. The application period concludes Sept. 16, 2011, at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Guests chosen for the panel are off-the-charts fanatics about all things Disney. They love to share what they have learned over their years of “doing Disney.” That’s why the panel was created in 2008 as an online forum of vacation advisors made up of everyday people who answer questions, offer advice and address specific concerns of families in the process of planning a trip to Walt Disney World Resort. Five years later, the panel has become a vacation planning phenomenon.

If this application period is anything like every previous one, competition will be fierce, with applications coming from thousands of candidates all over the world. More information is available at DisneyWorldMoms.com.

Disney Fantasy Moves a Step Closer to Reality with Final Building Block Due in Place on Sept. 3, 2011

The final building block for the newest Disney Cruise Line ship, the Disney Fantasy, will be put into place on Sept. 3, 2011, at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg. Signaling completion of a major milestone in the ship’s overall construction, the final block is a 260-ton portion of the ship’s bow, complete with the signature Disney Cruise Line golden filigree.

Once all 80 building blocks of the Disney Fantasy are in place, the focus shifts to outfitting the interior spaces that include the whimsical children’s spaces, dynamic adult venues, spectacular restaurants and elaborate theaters.

Sister ship to the Disney Dream which entered service in January 2011, the Disney Fantasy will feature new design elements and guest experiences that give the ship an identity all its own, including:

  • Europa — a nighttime entertainment district exclusively for adults with sophisticated bars and trendy lounges inspired by European travel.
  • Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique salon, where aspiring young princesses and pirates receive the full fairy tale treatment with pixie-dusted and pirate makeovers.
  • New main stage entertainment at the 1,340-seat Walt Disney Theatre, including “Disney’s Aladdin — A Musical Spectacular” — a Broadway-style production featuring the cast from the classic animated Disney film “Aladdin.”

The 4,000-passenger Disney Fantasy will sail week-long Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral, Fla., with its maiden voyage scheduled for March 31, 2012.

To learn more about Disney Cruise Line or to book a vacation, guests can visit disneycruise.com, call Disney Cruise Line at 888-325-2500 or contact their travel agent.

The array of experiences stimulates all the senses – with each venue presenting a unique design, look, feel, sounds and palate-pleasing delights. All venues in The District are interconnected and convey a sense of discovery as guests move throughout the areas.

The District located on Deck 4 aft is open exclusively to guests age 18 and older. Venues include:

  • Skyline – a chic, metropolitan “sky bar” with ever-changing views of stunning city skylines
  • Evolution – inspired by the evolution of the butterfly, a dynamic, contemporary nightclub

Relax…
Senses Spa & Salon provides tranquility, pampering and relaxation in an ocean-view environment of more than 16,000 square feet. Located in the forward section of the ship and spanning two decks (11 and 12), the spa features a design that is soothing – using a color palate of natural green, blue and soft brown hues, organic tropical motifs and rich, dark woods to impart a calming effect.

  • 17 private treatment rooms – offering a menu of luxurious spa treatments and services such as massages, body wraps and facials.

Indulge…
Two distinctive, adults-only dining experiences are offered aboard the Disney Dream. Available as alternatives to the normal rotational dining experiences, these refined culinary adventures on Deck 12 are reserved for guests ages 18 and older:

For an entirely new Palo experience on the Disney Dream, guests may dine al fresco on Palo’s private outdoor teak deck, with picturesque views and warm ocean breezes further tantalizing the senses.

Remy is Disney Cruise Line’s first-ever premier dining option. In an exquisite Art Nouveau setting with incredible ocean views, guests enjoy French-inspired gourmet cuisine by two award-winning chefs. Chef Arnaud Lallement from l’Assiette Champenoise, a Michelin two-star restaurant just outside Reims, France, and Chef Scott Hunnel from award-winning Victoria & Albert’s at Walt Disney World Resort collaborate to create a menu that melds classic and contemporary styles in a sophisticated dining concept featuring superior products and seasonal ingredients.

Polished touches at Remy include a tableside trolley for serving international cheeses, decanting stations for wines, and post-prandial coffee service including French press and grand crème. A private Chef’s Table dining room offers a special multi-course menu.

Nestled between Palo and Remy is Meridian, a cozy getaway with a décor inspired by the early days of sea travel. The venue features a sextant navigational tool embedded in the floor, banquettes with buckles to resemble old steamer trunks, and leather maps embossed with passport stamps from around the world adorning the walls.

Outside on the teak deck are a cigar bar and a grand view overlooking the aft of the ship. With a location that makes it a perfect spot for libations before or after dinner at Palo or Remy, Meridian Lounge requires a dress shirt or jacket for men and a dress or pantsuit for women. Remy requires men to wear a jacket (tie optional).

New ‘Crossroads at House of Blues’ Dining Experience Now at Downtown Disney

Earlier this week, a new dining experience debuted at the House of Blues in the Downtown Disney District in Anaheim. “Crossroads at House of Blues” features a new menu created by celebrity chef Aaron Sanchez.

Meatball Sliders from House of Blues at Downtown Disney District

Chef Aaron incorporated flavors from all over the world to create new signature dishes like shrimp and grits, short rib meatball sliders, hand stretched grilled flatbreads, chile braised short ribs and street tacos. But don’t worry, jambalaya fans! House of Blues favorites like jambalaya will remain on the menu alongside updated versions of guest favorites like cornbread, pulled pork sandwiches and signature burgers.

“House of Blues is all about music, love, art and spirituality,” said Chef Aaron. “In many ways, those are the same ingredients for great food and that’s exactly what I’ve tried to capture in the new menu for the Crossroads restaurants.”

Downtown Disney District guests can enjoy lunch and dinner seven days a week at “Crossroads at House of Blues” and breakfast Monday through Friday.

The Road to Pixar – The Pizza Planet Truck Story

The Road to Pixar - The Pizza Planet Truck Story

The Road To Pixar is an independent student film which involves construction of a life sized replica of The Pizza Planet Truck as well as a road trip up the state of California.

The Pizza Planet Truck, which was first seen in Toy Story, is a running gag throughout almost all of Pixar’s feature films.

Indiegogo Pitch – The Road to Pixar from Pizza Planet Truck on Vimeo.

The Impact

We feel that movies inspire us through the course of most (if not all) of our lives, and Pixar movies are no different. We also like the disruptive nature of injecting pop culture into a living breathing society, hoping to engage people’s curious nature. By building the Pizza Planet Truck and driving through California, we hope to blend the two.

Aside from getting a few heads to turn as we drive, we hope to interview as many people as possible about how they have grown up with the Pixar film canon (The Toy Story trilogy especially) and how it has effected their lives.  Creating a video log of anecdotes from other fans childhood experiences as well as their recent history.

This is a project for anyone who enjoys films, Pixar films, pop culture or awesomeness on wheels.

What We Need & What You Get

We are raising funds for any kind of TLC that the truck would need as well as a few other project related items: paint job, light up rocket for the roof, passengers of the toy disposition.  Any extra funding will go towards gas money, snacks, and prizes to hand out to those we meet on the road.

Other Ways You Can Help

If you are not able to donate please spread the word to anyone you know who is interested in Pixar, films, pop culture or awesomeness on wheels.

Check out our production blog as well as our twitter for updates in regards to the project.

Be sure to like our facebook page too.

Beer and non-alcoholic beverages will also be served to set the tone for a fabulous event.

We will then proceed to the foyer of The American Adventure rotunda for a sumptuous dinner served in the rotunda with special guest, Disney Legend Bob Gurr. In keeping with our “American adventure,” each station will be themed to a different region of the United States. Guests will be able to enjoy New Orleans crayfish soup, crisp California greens, Pacific Coast salmon, basil-seared North Carolina chicken breast with Georgia peaches, Midwestern grass-fed beef medallions with a Washington State Cabernet Demi and much more! Also during the day, take some time to get out of the sun and relax! The VIP lounge inside The American Adventure parlor will be open just for D23 Members as a place to enjoy some water or lemonade. If you haven’t seen the elegantly designed lounge, you will definitely want to stop in for a look and a libation. You also won’t want to miss the selection of exclusive D23 merchandise on display in the lounge, including our new collection featuring Bacchus, the god of wine, as from Fantasia, and his pal Jacchus, which will be available for order. All purchases will be shipped directly to your home!

That evening we will gather at the America Gardens Theatre for reserved seating to the Eat to the Beat concert, featuring Sugar Ray (“Fly,” “Every Morning,” “Someday”).

We’ll then walk over to Isle de France, in front of the French pavilion for private, reserved viewing of the nighttime spectacular IllumiNations and a dessert party that will include such sweet sensations as fresh strawberries, coffee-dusted compressed chocolate brownies, a doughnut flambé station and more! Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings & Honeymoons on Disney Cruise Line

Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings & Honeymoons on Disney Cruise Line

Couples can set sail on a happily-ever-after voyage of a lifetime with the Disney Cruise Line weddings program. An ultimate romantic adventure awaits brides and grooms looking for the perfect venue to tie the knot or renew their vows with Disney Cruise Line’s version of a real-life Fairy Tale wedding.

Fairy Tale Weddings
Whether saying “I do” for the first time or renewing wedding vows, Disney Cruise Line provides a happily-ever-after setting like none other. Couples can exchange vows in a ceremony onboard the ship, or step ashore for a romantic beach-side ceremony on Disney’s private island paradise, Castaway Cay.

Onboard locations include Outlook, a sophisticated private party space with ocean views on the Disney Dream, the swanky setting of Cadillac Lounge on the Disney Wonder and Sessions Lounge on the Disney Magic. Or they may enjoy the seclusion of a secret deck ceremony as they make a commitment to one another on the aft of the ship looking seaward. If the couple favors an event onshore, the pristine white sands of Castaway Cay beach or the private deck at Heads Up Pier are the perfect backdrop for a breathtaking ceremony.

A magical Fairy Godmother, aka a Disney Wedding Planner, takes care of all the details for a dream-come-true affair. Once the duo picks a date, the planner helps with arrangements such as selection of a cake, music, menu and décor.

Love will blossom on the special day and can be symbolized with a beautiful floral arrangement designed as part of the Cruise Wedding Collection by Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings. Offerings include a tropical bouquet tied naturally with palm leaves, a classic look of red roses or a stylish bouquet of calla lilies. Following the ceremony, the wedding party can relax with special guests and enjoy a cake cutting and champagne toast celebration at Palo, an elegant restaurant with sweeping ocean views.

Honeymoon in Paradise
Disney Cruise Line is not only for families with kids – it also is the ultimate honeymoon experience. With irresistible onboard elegance, invigorating onshore destinations and dreamy tropical breezes, a Disney cruise is the perfect romantic getaway. From savory meals at Palo and stimulating spa treatments to enchanting entertainment and activities, a Disney couples’ cruise is a romantic dream-come-true. There are places both onboard and onshore where privacy is valued and romance is in the air. Couples may enjoy time together at the Quiet Cove Pool, for adults only with two whirlpool spas and a poolside bar with exotic cocktails.

Senses Spa (Disney Dream) and Vista Spa (Disney Magic/Disney Wonder) provide pampering in tranquil and luxurious spa environments. A menu of spa treatments and services such as massages, body wraps, facials, manicures/pedicures and hair styling are available. In the spa’s Rain Forest, adult guests can experience the benefits of steam, heat and water therapy combined with the power of aromatherapy to relax the mind and body.

Newlyweds can indulge in a couple’s massage in a Spa Villa complete with an indoor spa treatment suite, connected to a private outdoor verandah with personal hot tub, open air shower and chaise lounge. With incredible ocean vistas and warm tropical breezes, the treatment suites provide a romantic retreat for two.

On Castaway Cay, Serenity Bay is a pristine stretch of beach exclusively for adults located almost a mile from the main family beach. At Serenity Bay, sparkling turquoise waters meet pristine white sand, palm fronds sway in the breeze and comfortable lounge chairs and two-person hammocks dot the beach.

For the ultimate in relaxation, newlyweds can enjoy a therapeutic massage at one of the nearby cabanas overlooking the ocean. And there is no need to head back to the main beach for refreshment – a delectable lunch buffet, Bahamian specialty drinks, beer and mixed drinks are served at the nearby Castaway Air Bar.

With Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings, couples can combine matrimony with a tropical adventure – and enjoy the world-class services of Disney Cruise Line. Land/sea vacation packages that include a stay at Walt Disney World Resort provide the ultimate Disney vacation experience.

Weddings begin at $3,500, plus cruise costs. For more information, visit disneyweddings.com.

Hoping to hit a high note for charity’s sake, the Encore! Cast Choir and Orchestra – a volunteer ensemble of nearly 300 talented Walt Disney World Resort cast members – performed a series of six concerts in July and August benefiting the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

The concerts, “An American Revival – A Concert Celebrating the Voice of America!,” were held at Premier Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and featured classic pop, gospel and patriotic songs that celebrate the grand musical history of America.

“This year’s shows [are] a tribute to the voice of America,” said Clay Price, artistic director and founder of Encore!. “[Showcasing] the sounds and emotions that have musically shaped our nation. From Americana, Gospel, Jazz, Swing, Broadway, and even “The King” himself … something for everyone to enjoy.”

Founded in 2002, Encore!  gives Walt Disney World cast members and their families the opportunity to showcase their talents and perform great music for worthy causes. The group is comprised of a 175-person choir, 65-piece symphony orchestra and 20-person dance troupe.

Since its inception, Encore! has donated the funds from its ticket sales to local charities, raising more than $150,000 to date. Beneficiaries are determined by group vote; Encore! selected the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts as their 2011 beneficiary.
