Ideas for the Next Disney Vacation Club Resort Location

Ideas for the Next Disney Vacation Club Resort Location

The Disney Vacation Club is, for some people, a really great way to bring the magic of Disney into their lives for the next fifty years.  There are already several Disney Vacation Club locations, both throughout Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and in other locations — so the question is, where would you like to see the next Disney Vacation Club Resort?

While I know that most of the Disney Vacation Club locations are actually based at Walt Disney World, I still think that there is room for one more.  No, I’m not referring to the rumor (some say fact) about a DVC location over at the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, although I think it is highly amusing that they have the Disney fencing up all over the place, and when you ask a Cast Member “What’s with the fence?”, you get the answer “What fence?”

My wife and I gave this some great discussion, and then she had what I think is a great location for the next Disney Vacation Club resort.  Think about it.  Over at Hollywood Studios, you’ve got the Boardwalk area, but that’s about it, right?  How cool would it be to have the next DVC resort be a replica of the Hollywood Tower Hotel, home of that crazy attraction The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror!

Picture this, you walk into the same look and feel of the lobby that you have now at the attractions — the Cast Members are wearing the same uniforms you find at the attractions.  The elevators, while modern, safe elevators, are made up to look like elevators of the period.  The rooms are just what you expect from a Disney Vacation Club setting, but the best thing of all: you can see the Tower of Terror attraction out your window!

I don’t know about you, but that would be a great resort to stay at in my opinion!  I don’t know where it would be built, or how they would do it, or anything about that, but I can picture it in my mind’s eye right now.

What do you think would be the best location for the next Disney Vacation Club resort?

Top 10 Disney things that you’re never “Too Old” for

Top 10 Disney things that you’re never “Too Old” for

A lot of adults write off Walt Disney World as “kid’s stuff”…personally I think that is nuts! While I believe adults can find a lot of ‘grown up’ activities to keep them happy and busy, I also think that everyone should take the time to experience all of these at least once (if not over and over!):

Spinning on the teacups as fast as you can (please note: adults AND kids should probably NOT eat right before attempting this!)

Getting your picture taken with characters – adults may think it’s silly to wait in line for Minnie’s autograph (I know I do – even I draw the line here – did enough of that when I was a kid!) but if you’re enjoying a character meal, and Minnie comes over to say hi, don’t avoid it, embrace the chance to let her hug you and have your picture taken with her (Minnie is quite the little flirt with the gentleman – so keep an eye on your husbands ladies!). On a separate but related note, I also think no one is too old for character meals, where you will find a fun, casual atmosphere and some of the best food WDW has to offer!

Water Slides – Disney offers two water parks full of all kinds of slides and pools, it’s the perfect way to cool off on a hot day

Roller coasters – even though many of the rides at WDW may be geared towards the younger crowd, there are many that adults can enjoy – from Space Mountain in the Magic Kingdom to Expedition Everest in Animal Kingdom, every park has at least one ‘thrill’ ride that will get your adrenaline pumping!

Towel Animals – When you stay on property at one of WDW’s many hotels, the cast members who clean the rooms will leave your towels/washcloths in cute shapes, sometimes animals or setup as a vase for pipe cleaner ‘flowers’, it may seem silly, but it always makes me smile (and usually take a picture…could probably make a whole album full of towel animal pictures!Silly but its just another one of those Magical Disney touches that I love!)

Fireworks/light shows/nighttime parades – Each park has its own nighttime display/fireworks show, and they are all breathtaking! Special Effects and lights galore, they are enjoyable for all ages

Mickey Ice Cream Bars – I know I can’t say no to this delicious treat, chocolate coated ice cream on a stick in the shape of the Mouse (I am drooling just thinking about how good it tastes!)

Goofy’s Candy Co. in Downtown Disney offers guest the chance to sample all kinds of sweet treats and even design your own sweet creations, which the cast members create right in front of you (try not to drool on the divider glass!)

A Real Safari Ride – Board a Jeep on a trek across an African savannah at Animal Kingdom on the Kilimanjaro Safari Ride. See animals so up close, it will take your breath away.

Dinner Shows are fun for everyone no matter what age – the Hoop Dee Doo Review whoops it up western style over at Fort Wilderness, while over at the Polynesian the Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show, a show featuring hula dancers and fire jugglers amazes all who attend

There are so many things at Walt Disney World to enjoy, the above are just a very few of the things I think are a treat for those tall and small, young and old, and for everyone who is young at heart.

Disney Moves Forward with ‘Lone Ranger’!

Disney Moves Forward with 'Lone Ranger'!

It looks like the public duel between Disney and director Gore Verbinski, actor Johnny Depp, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer has finally reached it’s end. After Disney pulled the plug on the trios project, a public battle over the budget heated up the news and the fate of the project looked bleak. Depp went public and said he wouldn’t do the project without Verbinksi, which put the project, and Disney, in a corner. But it looks like all parties have come to a mutual agreement, and Disney is looking to move forward with ‘Lone Ranger’!

Marvel is on a role lately with their movies. Yesterday, we learned that they had set their sites on Patty Jenkins on to direct ‘Thor 2’, and now it looks like Chris Evans is expecting to gear up as Steven Rogers again in ‘Captain America 2’ by 2014.

AVATAR coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney Parks

AVATAR coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney Parks
Disney Parks welcomes Avatar to Disney's Animal Kingdom.

On Sept. 20, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts announced an agreement for exclusive global theme park rights with filmmaker James Cameron and Fox Filmed Entertainment to bring the fantastical, science fiction world of AVATAR to Disney’s Animal Kingdom and possibly other locations.

The agreement establishes a long-term creative partnership between Disney, Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment (with producing partner Jon Landau) and Fox to create themed lands – the press release uses the plural – that realize the AVATAR universe.

In a prepared statement, The Walt Disney Company offered several reasons for the partnership.

“James Cameron is a groundbreaking filmmaker and gifted storyteller who shares our passion for creativity, technological innovation and delivering the best experience possible,” said Robert A. Iger, President and CEO of The Walt Disney Company said in a prepared statement. “With this agreement, we have the extraordinary opportunity to combine James’ talent and vision with the imagination and expertise of Disney.”

“AVATAR is a uniquely powerful franchise that has global appeal with audiences of all ages. Its spectacular settings, intriguing characters, imaginative creatures, and strong themes of family and loyalty make it a perfect fit for Disney,” added Thomas O. Staggs, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “We can’t wait to give our guests the ability to journey to Pandora and explore the incredible immersive world of AVATAR in person.”

Disney announced the first – again, note the wording – AVATAR themed land will be inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom park at Walt Disney World Resort. The park was described as a “natural fit” for AVATAR stories, due to the parks interest in environmentalism and living in harmony with nature.

Cameron, Landau and their Lightstorm Entertainment group will serve as creative consultants on projects, partnering with Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) in the design and development of the AVATAR themed lands.

Construction on the AVATAR themed land at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is slated to begin by 2013.

While the announcement focused on the addition to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the agreement, with its global theme park rights, provides The Walt Disney Company with the opportunity to build additional AVATAR themed lands at other Disney parks. Disney and its international theme park partners will determine other locations.

In addition to holding a press conference, Disney also announced the partnership on the Disney Parks Blog. An invitation was extended to readers to ask Staggs questions via email. His responses to will then be addressed on the blog.

Chip and Company will keep you inform of AVATAR developments as more information becomes available.

In the meantime, what do you think of the news? Is Disney’s Animal Kingdom a good home for the AVATAR universe?

The Count of Monte Cristo – BluRay Movie Review

The Count of Monte Cristo - BluRay Movie Review

Just debuting for the first time on Blu-ray September 13, 2011. It includes never-before-seen ‘Alternate Final Duel’ scene along with many other extras.

The Synopsis:

Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce play two long-time friends who become the bitterest of enemies in The Count of Monte Cristo. This tale of adventure and revenge is better than ever thanks to the addition of Blu-ray High Definition!

When the dashing and guileless Edmond Dantes (Caviezel) is betrayed by his best friend (Pearce) and wrongly imprisoned, he becomes consumed by thoughts of vengeance. After a miraculous escape, he transforms himself into the mysterious and wealthy Count of Monte Cristo, insinuates himself into the French nobility, and puts his cunning plan of reprisal in action. Experience the resounding clash of swords and the deadly glint off every razor-sharp blade. With the pristine sound and magnificent picture quality of Blu-ray, this swashbuckling thriller will have you perched on the edge of your seat until the very last drop of sweet revenge is exacted.

This one-disc release lists for $26.50 US / $31.50 CAN and runs for an impressive 131 minutes. Rated PG-13 in the US and PG in Canada.

The Movie:

I enjoyed this movie immensely! It makes you feel for the main character as he is wronged in so many ways, and root for him as he makes his way back from what can only be viewed as a very real Hell. Revenge isn’t the nicest topic but it is what drives this movie forward. Although you know it isn’t the best reason for living, you believe in how one man could be so totally consumed by it. And, despite yourself, you hope his plans to ruin all of the people who wronged him succeed!

As in all great movies, good prevails, and our hero finds redemption and peace by the end of the movie. Although there are many fine action sequences in this movie, it’s real strengtha are in the characters and the superb storytelling. Be sure to watch for the little flourishes, such as the chess piece, throughout.

Bonus Features:

5 Deleted Scenes with commentary

These scenes were cut from the final film for good reason, as they would have added little more of value. But the alternate final duel was interesting. You get to see how the climatic battle was originally shot, and in my opinion, why it was re-shot to much better effect. A definite highlight of the disc.

“The Napoleonic World” – Production Design Featurette

Like most of the extras on this disc, it is short and sweet. But it does take you on a scouting trip of possible locations for the film and gives a glimpse into how the final locations were chosen and why.

“En Garde” – Multi-Angle Sword Fighting Feature

Not the most interesting bonus feature, but for film fans, a pleasant enough distraction. Learn how the Director used multiple cameras to get coverage of the final duel scene.

“The Pen” – A Retrospective on author Alexandre Dumas

This was by far the most interesting bonus feature. I learned things about Dumas I never knew before which helped me to appreciate the man behind one other little classic called The Three Musketeers. A must-see!

“Adapting A Classic” – Screenwriting Segment

My second-favorite of the bonus material. Learn the difference between writing a good book and making a successful movie.

“The Clash of Steel” – Stunt Choreography Piece

Another short but entertaining look at the behind-the-scenes work that goes into every Hollywood picture. This time we hear from the man who trained the leads in swordplay. Watching the rehearsals was fun!

Layer-By-Layer and the Audio Commentary round out the Bonus Features.

Final Comments:

I saw this movie when it first came out but had forgotten most of the storyline. So for me it was like watching a whole new movie for the first time! And what a treat it turned out to be. As the Screenwriter, Jay Wolpert, said in the Screenwriting Segment: His job wasn’t to adapt the book, but to write a good movie. And that he did!

So if you plan to take my recommendation and see this movie: Prepare for Adventure. Count on Revenge!
