EPCOT – Top 5 Attractions For Seniors

EPCOT - Top 5 Attractions For Seniors

Epcot is absolutely our favorite park. The shows and attractions, with a couple of exceptions, seem to be very senior friendly. As well, a lot of folks think children will have no interest in Epcot because of its educational/informative bent but I beg to disagree. Kids thirst for knowledge and Epcot presents that knowledge in a fun and informative way. This makes Epcot the most universal of parks in overall appeal to all generations. (personal opinion of course) Let’s take a look at Epcot’s top 5 for seniors and see if they match your choices.

  1. Spaceship Earth – What a way for seniors to start their visit to Epcot. It’s a relaxing, informative and fun way to be exposed to the history of communication, as well, it sets the tone for the rest of the visit. Along with the recent upgrade came a lot of new techie stuff which especially appeals to younger visitors. The upgrade improved every aspect of the attraction including the narrative (Dame Judi Dench fan here). Make sure you take the time to enjoy this attraction. Try it early in the day while everyone else is running for Soarin’.
  2. Soarin’ – Arguably the most popular attraction at Epcot, this is also a very senior friendly attraction. What you get here is a tour over the skies of California from a perspective that few folks will ever experience. The ride equipment itself looks a bit daunting to a lot of seniors but the boarding and departing of the ride is easily handled by seniors and the ride itself is gentle and the scenery rewarding. Give it a try my fellow seniors.
  3. The American Adventure Show – The biggest criticism I’ve heard about this show is that it is overly patriotic. Is that a criticism or a compliment – I know how I feel about it. The more patriotic the better, this is America after all!! The animatronics are quite good and the stage is HUGE! Please sit a ways back senior friends so you can take it in without any issues. Make sure you get there early so you can take in the Fife and Drum Corps demonstration and the Voices of Liberty (an amazing a capella ensemble in the lobby), it’s one of the most rewarding hours you will spend at Epcot.
  4. Impressions de France – If you enjoy beautiful travelogue type photography and delightful music then you will love this attraction. Unlike a lot of the other “country” films, this one is presented in a comfortable theater type setting so there is no standing (sometimes tough on our older legs and feet). This makes for a wonderful break from touring and allows you to recoup from touring; and did I mention, the film and the music are wonderful.
  5. O Canada! – We can’t forget our wonderful neighbors to the north. This film (sorry, it’s a stand up) had gotten very tired over the years but a fairly recent remake starring Martin Short and several other “surprisingly” Canadian celebrities has given the story of O Canada! a whole new life. If you viewed it a few years ago and were a bit disappointed, give it another chance you will not be sorry.

Epcot is a paradise for us older folks. Most of us love to walk around and look, look, look and Epcot is the place to do just that, Perhaps that’s why we spend 2 1/2 to 3 days there every visit – we are truly hooked!! As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Man accused of taking Disney trip on nonprofit's credit card

This article comes to us from the Jacksonville Times:

The former president of the Yulee Athletic Association is charged with stealing money to take a trip to Disney World earlier this year.

Jeffrey Lee Johnson, 41, was arrested after the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office was called to review the association’s finances.

According to Johnson’s arrest report, the investigation revealed that he had spent $1,111 on the association’s credit card to go to Disney World last April. Association money also was used to pay his cell phone bill.

Magic Kingdom – Top 5 Attractions For Seniors

Magic Kingdom - Top 5 Attractions For Seniors

The Magic Kingdom is just for kids – WRONG!! The Magic Kingdom is for absolutely everyone but does have particular appeal to the kids and yes, us older folks!! There are so many wonderful attractions that run the gamut from roller coasters to shows that it’s hard to pick just 5. Let’s check out those that are both entertaining and kind to the bodies of my fellow seniors.

  1. The Haunted Mansion This just could be my favorite attraction at Walt Disney World. It underwent a major upgrade a few years ago and everything (and I mean everything) was improved. I’m excited about this years visit because the queue just underwent a huge overhaul and is now interactive. From what I’ve heard it’s amazing. So – in just the last few years, Disney has taken their best attraction and improved it to an unbelievable level. What can they do with it next? I don’t have a clue but stat tuned, they will come up with something.
  2. Pirates of the CaribbeanAnother Disney classic that just goes on and on. It’s a pleasant and fun sojourn with those evil pirates as they do what pirates do. It’s a comfortable boat ride with a couple of minor drops that will harm no one. The detail is amazing throughout, as you go under the bridge as you leave the town scene, check out the hairy legs of the pirate sitting on the bridge. Make sure you look for Captain Jack, he shows up at least 3 times.
  3. The Jungle CruiseThis is normally the first attraction we hit on every visit to the Magic Kingdom. Sure – the animatronics are not all that sophisticated and the “skipper’s” jokes are corny and tired (but oddly funny) but it’s a great way for seniors to kick off their Magic Kingdom visit. Take the time to ride it but try to do it early because lines can get long.
  4. “it’s a small world”-This one goes all the way back to the ’64 World’s Fair, when many of us seniors were still school kids. It’s bright and cheery and young kids (and a lot of seniors) really enjoy it. The music (OH!! that song) is likely to set up camp in your head and spend the rest of the day with you so be warned. It’s not really that bad and besides there are a lot worse things that could be rattling around in your head. Enjoy the very smooth and cheerful time you spend with the world’s kiddies and feel free to join them in song.
  5. Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress Another classic oldie!! Do you see a trend here? It looks like the older attractions are favored by the older folks, at least this older folk. This one has changed a little over the years but still focuses on “progress”. The animatronics, again, are not that sophisticated but the story line is entertaining and it’s a very relaxing way to spend a little bit of time. I particularly enjoy the scene changes where you sit there and rotate rather than the scenes rotating. Enjoy this one!!

There are so many of the old classics in the Magic Kingdom that it’s easy for seniors to have a wonderful time without even approaching a roller coaster. Make sure you try some of the older things even if the younger members of your party want to ride Space Mountain – you will not be sorry. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Seventeen Magazine & ABC Family Kick Off Pro-Social Movement To Delete Digital Drama

Seventeen Magazine & ABC Family Kick Off Pro-Social Movement To Delete Digital Drama

Seventeen magazine and ABC Family are launching its multi-tiered pro-social campaign to bring awareness to the youth issue of online bullying. Kicking off in print, on-air and online starting on Tuesday, July 5th, the Delete Digital Drama campaign will provide outreach through Seventeen magazine and ABC Family media assets, as well as through partnerships with Verizon, a global leader in delivering innovative communications and technology, and specialty retailer Charlotte Russe.

Delete Digital Drama will be the focus of Seventeen magazine’s August issue, available on newsstands on July 5th. The issue includes a multi-page feature which includes personal stories from readers and ABC Family talent about their own experiences with bullying.

On air, ABC Family will begin airing an awareness announcement on July 5th that encourages Millennials to do their part in helping to put an end to digital drama. Enlisted are a broad array of stars from the network’s hit series, including “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and “Pretty Little Liars,” and its new summer series “Switched at Birth,” “The Nine Lives of Chloe King” and “The Lying Game.” In the announcement, the actors speak to the issue, each wearing a t-shirt that spells out the word [delete].

Online, both ABCFamily.com and Seventeen.com have created web pages devoted to Delete Digital Drama, which include the awareness announcement; exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and photos of the awareness announcement and Seventeen photo shoot; and exclusive photos and video from the ABC Family original movie “Cyberbully.” In addition, both portals will support the cause through social media tactics on Facebook and Twitter. Fans can show their support for the initiative by adding a Delete Digital Drama badge to their Facebook and Twitter profile photos. These “Twibbons” will be available on ABCFamily.com, Seventeen.com, Twibbon.com and Facebook.

In order to further encourage Millennials to take action, ABC Family and Seventeen magazine have joined forces to produce the “Rally to Delete Digital Drama,” a live event scheduled for Thursday, July 14th at 4:00PM PT at The Americana at Brand in Glendale, CA. The rally will include appearances by ABC Family talent including Shay Mitchell (“Pretty Little Liars”), Daren Kagasoff (“The Secret Life of the American Teenager”), Skyler Samuels (“The Nine Lives of Chloe King”), Grey Damon (“The Nine Lives of Chloe King”), Katie Leclerc (“Switched at Birth”), Vanessa Marano (“Switched at Birth”) and Emily Osment (“Cyberbully”); Seventeen magazine’s editor-in-chief Ann Shoket; and a surprise musical performance, as well as an autograph signing and premium giveaways.

Also playing a pivotal role in the campaign will be the ABC Family two-hour original movie, “Cyberbully,” starring Emily Osment (“Hannah Montana”), Kelly Rowan (“The OC”) and Kay Panabaker (“No Ordinary Family”), premiering on Sunday, July 17th at 8:00PM ET/PT. The network will debut a PSA during “Cyberbully” featuring its star, Emily Osment. In the public service announcement, Osment will direct viewers to StompoutBullying.org, providing a resource for viewers and readers to reach out for help, if necessary. For those who are in need of immediate help/assistance, they can go to the website or call the Stomp Out Bullying hotline at 855-790-HELP.

Also on July 5th, t-shirts with the word [delete] printed on them will be available at the mall-based retailer Charlotte Russe with 100% of the proceeds donated to the non-profit organization StompOutBullying.org. The t-shirts will be available online at CharlotteRusse.com and in 50 stores nationwide. Additionally, participants can enter the Delete Digital Drama Sweepstakes on the Charlotte Russe Facebook page for a chance to win prizes. Prizes include [delete] t-shirts signed by ABC Family talent, Seventeen magazine gift bags and Charlotte Russe gift cards. Visit Facebook.com/CharlotteRusse for official rules and details.

Verizon has also joined the movement with a call-to-action text campaign. Beginning July 5th, Verizon Wireless customers can text “Delete” to 3332 to pledge their support to end digital drama. Through this pledge, teens can use their cell phones to spread digital drama awareness and become an active part of the movement to end online bullying. Verizon will premiere the Delete Digital Drama awareness announcement on FiOS TV, as well as the mobile company’s V CAST video on Demand.

Disney Confidential – New Hoop Dee Doo Revue Show Times

Disney Confidential - New Hoop Dee Doo Revue Show Times

Hey there guys and gals. Anonymouse here.

I have some interesting Disney News/Gossip this morning. The news on the street is Disney is testing new show times for ‘Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue’ starting in November 2011.

Here is what I have read:

From time to time, we evaluate our operation and occasionally make adjustments to meet the changing needs of our guests. As a part of that effort, we will be testing new show times for the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue. From November 13, 2011 through February 11, 2012, the show times will be adjusted to 4 p.m., 6:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. (Note that the current show times are 5 p.m., 7:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.)

Very Interesting..

I don’t know about you but these times are a lot more family friendly. I mean seriously who wants to eat dinner at 9:30pm at night. At 9:30 I am finishing up my 2nd lap around the World Showcase in my Drink Around the World Showcase Challenge.

I hear Chip passes out about 2 stops into the first lap.. What a lightweight.

Tell me what you think about the new showtimes in the comment box below.

Anywho that is all the Disney Gossip I have right now.

Got any good rumors?  Please email me at [email protected] on my Facebook Page.

Off the Beaten Path: Magic Kingdom Quiet Places

Off the Beaten Path: Magic Kingdom Quiet Places

During our WDW trips, we stick to the “Pirates Code”: “He who falls behind, gets left behind”. This drives home the point that it’s everyone’s vacation (particularly when we’re in our grand gathering) and we need to maintain a pace that’s good for everyone. If the kids had their choice, they would run back and forth between point A and point B all day long and if the adults had their choice, we’d be in a nice air conditioned ride all day long. When it’s been a long day in the parks for everyone and the meltdown is looming overhead the Pirates Code keeps us all going.

That being said, even pirates need a break and I’ve come to find some of my favorite moments in the parks are the quiet nooks and crannies you can find and nestle away for a few minutes.

Here are my top 5 suggestions for a break in the Magic Kingdom:

1. The nook on the right hand side (heading toward the castle) of Main Street U.S.A. Before you enter the crystal shop, you’ll usually see a cart with an artists who’s doing silhouettes, behind him there is a nice little area where you can sometimes find shade and a seat. If you listen carefully you can hear someone getting voice lessons from the room upstairs!

2. Between the Astro Orbiter and Space Mountain there is a nice spot along a fence where you can watch the Tomorrowland Speedway, and it’s a great place to wait for family members who are riding the Orbiter, or Space Mountain. I find this spot much more relaxing than the noisy overcrowded food court which is nearby enough to grab a snack or a beverage while you wait!

3. The Briar Patch gift shop near Splash Mountain-It’s one of the smaller gift shops in the parks but I love the theming and the two rocking chairs that are inside (which are often occupied). It’s also indoors and nice and cool in there, and there is rarely a line at the cash register if you need to make a purchase.

4. The benches by Pirates of the Caribbean-as you make your way from Frontierland into Adventureland you’ll see the Pirate’s of the Caribbean gift shop, and you’ll also see a shady area with some benches. This is far enough away from the bathrooms to be considered fresh air, but close enough to wait for family members who are shopping, on the ride, or using the facilities. You can often watch hair braiding and ring making from that spot as well.

5. With all the Fantasyland expansion there isn’t too much quiet to be found there, not to mention it’s where you’ll find the most concentrated group of mini-dreamers (and therefore the most noise!) One of my favorite spots has always been by Cinderella’s fountain and down the walkway by the castle (it just so happens to lead you straight to Sleepy Hollow…might as well grab a funnel cake while you’re there!) it’s a shady spot where you’ll find a bench or two and you might even have a run in with a Princess. It’s also an unobstructed view of the castle.

Those are some of my favorite quiet places in the Magic Kingdom, where are yours?

Disney announces Thor 2 release date

Disney announces Thor 2 release date

It seems that 2013 is going to be a Marvel summer.  Disney has just announced a July 26, 2013 release date  for its Thor sequel.  The film will join Iron Man 3, already set for a May release, giving Disney, with its Marvel interests, a double-superhero summer.  Current information indicates that Kenneth Branagh will not be returning to direct the film, although he may be stepping in as a producer instead.  Although the director is unknown, there is no doubt that Chris Hemsworth will be reprising the title role, and the plot is rumored to continue the inter-related world being set up by the release of the Avengers in 2012 as well as the Thor franchise itself.

Disney Writing Movie Based on Disneyland’s Matterhorn Ride

Disney Writing Movie Based on Disneyland's Matterhorn Ride

This article comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter:

Disney is developing an adventure movie project inspired by the Matterhorn ride and has set Jason Dean Hall to pen the script. Justin Springer (Tron Legacy, Prom) is producing the project, which has a working title of The Hill.

The Matterhorn, also known as the Matterhorn Bobsleds, is part of Disneyland’s Fantasyland section. Opened June 1959, the elaborate ride was inspired by Walt Disney‘s desire for a toboggan-themed roller coaster as well as thoughts he had after an extended trip to Switzerland, the site of the famed mountain. The ride, a centerpiece of the park, was refurbished in 1978, with one of the upgrades being the addition of three automatronic Abominable Snowmen (aka Yetis) who growl at riders.

The idea behind The Hill is to do a thrilling, fast-paced movie centering on five young adventure seekers who, for mysterious reasons, are called to the top of the mountain and encounter a Yetis on the journey down.
