Capturing Disney in Pictures: 6th Day of Christmas at Wilderness Lodge

Capturing Disney in Pictures: 6th Day of Christmas at Wilderness Lodge
Christmas tree at Wilderness Lodge

Every photo has a story.

Consistently rated as one of the top authentic-themed lodgings in Orlando, Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort is like stepping straight into the Old West.  Tall pines, thick forest, and a 450-acre lake all add to the feeling that you have left sunny Florida and magically traveled to Yellowstone National Park’s Old Faithful Inn, one of several rustic landmarks used as inspiration for Wilderness Lodge.  You are traveling using magic -Disney Magic!

Picture this…during the Christmas holidays, Wilderness Lodge’s soaring six-story lobby is decked out for the season with festive wreaths and garlands.  A 60-foot Christmas tree adorned with nature-themed decorations and 60,000 twinkling lights are the focal highlight of the Lodge’s holiday décor.  Take a seat in one of the rocking chairs by the 80-foot-tall fireplace, which depicts a built-to-scale replica of the Grand Canyon’s rock layers.  Warm your hands by the fire, and look around the gift shop in an equally warm and cozy shopping environment.

Wilderness Lodge has five restaurants that offer everything from fine dining to quick counter-service snacks from breakfast through dinner.  Grab a bite to eat, and head outside to take in some of the Rocky Mountain ambience.

Follow the path… along the man-made Silver Creek, stroll down to Fire Rock Geyser. Located in-between the shores of Bay Lake and the Silver Creek Springs pool, Fire Rock Geyser is a Disney-created artificial geyser controlled by computer.  Stick around for a while and you’ll witness the water shooting 120 feet into the air.  Fire Rock Geyser is fashioned after Yellowstone National Park’s famous geyser, Old Faithful.  The geyser erupts every hour, on the hour, from early morning to 10 p.m.

Grab a snack… take a seat at one of the many tables just outside Roaring Fork quick service dining, and wait for the geyser show.  You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to the Rocky Mountains of the great old west, only this version is more beautiful, and there’s orchestral music piped in through the rich landscaping.  One quick boat ride, and you’ll be back on the steps of the Magic Kingdom in less than 20 minutes, depending on holiday water traffic.  Bring a camera, because the Florida wilderness views are fantastic.

Thanks for stopping by for a photographical Disney ride!

Major Disney Auction features 1953 Disneyland Prospectus

Phil Weiss Auctions of Oceanside NY will be presenting a major auction of Disney Memorabilia Sat. Dec. 17 including Walt Disney’s original vision on paper for Disneyland.

The auction is part of a weekend of sales at the gallery and online including dolls, toys, trains and action figures to satisfy any age kids’ holiday dreams come true.

The feature is a one-of-a-kind item that depicts Walt Disney’s dream before it came true.

LOT #1194 – DISNEYLAND Original 1953 Prospectus with MAPS

DISNEYLAND Original Prospectus, 1953

This is the original document drafted by Walt Disney and artist Herb Ryman to give words and images to Walt’s idea of a family fun attraction. This complete document in a folder is one of 3 supposedly produced personally by Walt and Herb for Walt to take to New York to find a partner to invest $5 million to finance the building of Disneyland. He supposedly left these 3 documents with 3 bankers in New York and left without an investor.

This document was discovered at an estate sale on Long Island in New York in the early 1980s by a picker and has been in the same owner’s hands since 1984 (collectibles expert and appraiser Gary Sohmers) who has extensively researched to determine its rarity and importance. It had been seen by Dave Smith of the Walt Disney Archives at a Disneyana Convention in the 1990s and Dave explained what it was.

The document includes an outer 9″ x 12″ folder with tabs to hold pages featuring what appears to be rub on lettering “DISNEYLAND.” Inside the folder are 9 type pages describing Walt’s planned park including describing the different “lands” with some that never came to fruition such as “Lilliputian Land” and “Happy Holiday Land.”

The first Map attached inside the front cover is a large 24″ x 36″ stat, hand colored by either (or both) Walt and Herb in colored pencils features a fantasy birds-eye view of the proposed park. The second Map is a 12″ x 18″ stat of an architectural rendering of the proposed park showing an advanced stage of planning for the acreage that was purchased in Buena Vista.

The typed pages include quotes from Walt that have been referenced about the proposed park ever since, one page features only “Walt Disney – sometime – in 1955 will present to the people of the world – and children of all ages – a new experience in entertainment. In these pages is proffered a glimpse into this great adventure – a preview of what the visitor will experience – Disneyland.”

This is an extremely rare document in the history of Walt Disney and has never been reproduced in whole or in part although several sources on the internet reference the document in research and company history, this is the only copy still known to exist as neither the Disney Archives or the Disney Museum has one and may not even have a complete copy. NOTICE: There will not be digital images of all of the pages available for this item as digital counterfeiting will devalue the item, there will be 4 images available including photographs of the Maps, qualified bidders who wish to see the item in person will need to view it in advance by appointment at the Gallery in Oceanside NY.

The auction includes over 350 lots of Disneyana, Animation and Comic art including items from the Conventions, signed art and rare memorabilia. Previews will be during the week prior to the auction.

Items offered are part of a live auction at Philip Weiss Auction Gallery with items offered In numerical order at a pace of approximately 75 lots per hour. Please read the terms and conditions. There is a buyers premium and bids are taken in person, on the phone and online through Proxibid.

Second Harvest Food Bank’s Receives Early Holiday Gift from Disney

Second Harvest Food Bank’s Receives Early Holiday Gift from Disney

Before the first note of Sunday’s Candlelight Processional at Epcot, Walt Disney World announced a gift – to the tune of $30,000 – for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s Kids Cafe. The program provides nutritious daily meals to more than 900 local children.

Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Operations, United States and France, announced the gift for Kids Cafe, which has 13 different after-school sites in Central Florida.

According to Second Harvest, the issue of hunger in America has reached a critical stage, as one in four children struggles with hunger.

“No American, and especially no child, should go hungry, and we thank Disney for making it possible for us to help more families in more neighborhoods across the country this school year,” said Dave Krepcho, president and CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. “This donation will help our Kids Cafe program give parents and caregivers an additional way to ensure that their children receive hot and nutritious meals.”

In November, Walt Disney World gave Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida $500,000 to help the organization reach its goal of building a new, larger facility so it can accept and distribute significantly more food and reach more Central Floridians in need.

Who Will Be Leaving “Once Upon A Time”?

Who Will Be Leaving "Once Upon A Time"?

If you have been watching ABC’s “Once Upon A Time,” and especially if you are a major fanatic for it like I am, then you know that one of the characters is going to die next week. I have been watching this show on the Disney-owned ABC network since it first started and I don’t know which Storybrooke citizen might be getting the ax.

It would appear that many people are wondering the same thing. There is even a ‘Guess the Corpse’ poll on the Hollywood Life website where you can vote for the character you think will meet his or her unhappily ever after. Vote here.

It is sad but true that during my land and sea vacation to Walt Disney World and the Bahamas, I will be missing the December 18 episode of my favorite show. How will I know what happened? Will I be able to watch it aboard the Dream? Well, according to the Disney Cruise Line website, I will be able to watch ABC on channel 18. I sure hope so…

Have you been watching the show? Who do you think is leaving?
