Hollywood’s Biggest Names Bring Walt Disney World Attractions to Life

How many times have you been on a Disney Parks attraction and said, “Hey, that guy looks familiar!” or “I recognize her voice”? Disney love how Imagineers seamlessly work celebrities into some of our favorite attractions. It can add additional layers to the storytelling as well as the enjoyment a guest experiences when they have the “Ah ha!” moment of, “Hey, that’s Jamie Lee Curtis playing against Ellen DeGeneres on ‘Jeopardy!’”

Ellen's Energy Adventure at Walt Disney World Resort

To celebrate the new issue of Disney twenty-three magazine in honor of Walt Disney World Resort’s 40th anniversary, D23 chatted with some of the incredible talent who appear on and in attractions around the Orlando resort. Currently featured on the D23 website is Illeana Douglas (Ghost World, Goodfellas, Cape Fear), who plays the hilarious rock band manager on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. She told us she was shocked when she was asked to be a part of the high-speed attraction. “At first I thought it was a joke,” she said. “Growing up, Aerosmith was my favorite band ever!”

Journey Into Imagination with Figment at Walt Disney World Resort

Disney also chatted with Eric Idle who contributed his talents to two Epcot attractions (Journey into Imagination With Figment and Honey I Shrunk the Audience), who is thrilled to a part of Disney history. “I love being able to appear fifteen times a day without having to turn up!” he joked.

Coming up this week we have exclusive interviews with two other big-name talents, including an actress who experienced an Alien Encounter and an actor who sent guests careening into space by giving voice to a lovable robot. We’ll finish up the series with a round up of stories and quotes from a dozen other stars (including a mischievous pirate, a chief flight attendant and lovable bug)! You’ll be able to find them all on the D23 website.

Wednesday with Walt: Chocolate Soda Please

Wednesday with Walt: Chocolate Soda Please

Walt Disney was a warm, sincere, friendly and fun-loving guy. He liked to entertain more than he liked being entertained. I think that was because of his giving spirit. Walt and Lillian weren’t into the Hollywood social scene. Rather than being found out on the town at any lavish soiree or cocktail party, they were more likely to be at home with close family and friends playing games. Walt liked relaxing with people he was comfortable with and he liked entertaining his guests.

Walt is said to have had a giant sweet tooth (I can sympathize) and as such he had insatiable cravings for ice cream sodas and candy bars. He was known to have colorful jars of candy to share all over his studio office and his pride and joy at his Holmby Hills home (aside from his train) was the soda fountain in his club room, complete with all the extras and attachments. Walt loved playing soda jerk for his family and friends. He would make ice cream sodas and the biggest banana splits anyone ever saw, according to those who were lucky enough to benefit from his sweet tooth genius. One such person was Disney Animator, Ward Kimball, who said, “Walt would get behind the counter of his soda fountain, which was his boyhood dream come true. He’d have all these different flavors of ice cream, and he’d make these big tall things with whipped cream and cherries. They’d be a mile high!”

Walt was also happy about the fact that the club room was a fun place for his girls to entertain their friends. His daughter, Sharon, said he was known to make gooey concoctions of all kinds. Walt would “gripe” about supplying the whole neighborhood with sodas at his expense. Truth be known, he was happy his daughters were at home and had their friends visit there where he knew they were safe.

True to Walt’s style, his trying to “plus” one concoction after another sometimes developed into creations that no one would try, not even him. He did have a favorite though, a chocolate soda. During the planning phase of the 100 Years of Magic Celebration at WDW in 2000, several Disney chefs were asked to come up with recipes for Walt’s favorite desserts. Unveiled at the celebration, which was held in honor of what would have been Walt’s 100th birthday, was this recipe for the sweet soda treat Walt enjoyed so much. Chef Wendt Welcovitz of The Plaza Restaurant came up with the recipe. I hope you will try it at your next gathering of family and friends too — maybe you can sip it while enjoying a great Disney movie!

Disney’s Body-Mounted Cameras Turn Motion Capture Inside Out

Disney's Body-Mounted Cameras Turn Motion Capture Inside Out

Traditional motion capture techniques use cameras to meticulously record the movements of actors inside studios, enabling those movements to be translated into digital models. But by turning the cameras around — mounting almost two dozen, outward-facing cameras on the actors themselves — scientists at Disney Research, Pittsburgh (DRP), and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) have shown that motion capture can occur almost anywhere — in natural environments, over large areas and outdoors.

Motion capture makes possible scenes such as those in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” where the movements of actor Bill Nighy were translated into a digitally created Davy Jones with octopus-like tentacles forming his beard. But body-mounted cameras enable capture of motions, such as running outside or swinging on monkey bars, that would be difficult — if not impossible — otherwise, said Takaaki Shiratori, a post-doctoral associate at DRP.

“This could be the future of motion capture,” said Shiratori, who will make a presentation about the new technique today (Aug. 8) at SIGGRAPH 2011, the International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques in Vancouver. As video cameras become ever smaller and cheaper, “I think anyone will be able to do motion capture in the not-so-distant future,” he said.

Other researchers on the project include Jessica Hodgins, DRP director and a CMU professor of robotics and computer science; Hyun Soo Park, a Ph.D. student in mechanical engineering at CMU; Leonid Sigal, DRP researcher; and Yaser Sheikh, assistant research professor in CMU’s Robotics Institute.

The wearable camera system makes it possible to reconstruct the relative and global motions of an actor thanks to a process called structure from motion (SfM). Takeo Kanade, a CMU professor of computer science and robotics and a pioneer in computer vision, developed SfM 20 years ago as a means of determining the three-dimensional structure of an object by analyzing the images from a camera as it moves around the object, or as the object moves past the camera.

In this application, SfM is not used primarily to analyze objects in a person’s surroundings, but to estimate the pose of the cameras on the person. Researchers used Velcro to mount 20 lightweight cameras on the limbs, and trunk of each subject. Each camera was calibrated with respect to a reference structure. Each person then performed a range-of-motion exercise that allowed the system to automatically build a digital skeleton and estimate positions of cameras with respect to that skeleton.

SfM is used to estimate rough position and orientation of limbs as the actor moves through an environment and to collect sparse 3D information about the environment that can provide context for the captured motion. The rough position and orientation of limbs serves as an initial guess for a refinement step that optimizes the configuration of the body and its location in the environment, resulting in the final motion capture result.

The quality of motion capture from body-mounted cameras does not yet match the fidelity of traditional motion capture, Shiratori said, but will improve as the resolution of small video cameras continues to improve.

The technique requires a significant amount of computational power; a minute of motion capture now can require an entire day to process. Future work will include efforts to find computational shortcuts, such as performing many of the steps simultaneously through parallel processing.

Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine Gears up at NABJ Conference

Disney's Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine Gears up at NABJ Conference

The City of Brotherly Love gave a warm welcome to Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) national convention. The power-packed NABJ event in Philadelphia featured a myriad of panels on professional development, scholastic lectures and workshops. Disney hosted a panel showcasing the magic behind Disney’s Dreamers Academy as it embarks on its fifth year of igniting dreams, passions and lives.

Eight local Philadelphia-area Dreamers shared their personal stories and provided insight on how Disney’s Dreamers Academy has helped them get started on their career exploration.

Stephanie Stewart, a 2008 alumna, spoke on her experience at Disney’s Dreamers Academy: “Disney’s Dreamers Academy has opened many doors for me. At the program I was able to work directly with a production team. The experience broadened my horizons in production as far as working with cameras and directing, preparing me for my future. I hope to work with Oprah one day.”

Leading sports journalist Stephen A. Smith spoke to attendees about the importance of dreaming and on how Disney’s Dreamers Academy has inspired him. Top Gospel artist and Disney’s Dreamers Academy Advisory Board Member Yolanda Adams wowed guests with a powerful performance. An avid supporter of the program, Adams said, “I share a kindred spirit with the Dreamers because when I was 16 years old, I was looking for role models and I was able to find them in my family. Disney’s Dreamers Academy provides youth with great people to look up to. Everyone needs a role model. Hopefully somebody can find that in me.”

Since its launch in 2007 by Disney and syndicated-radio-show host/author/comedian Steve Harvey, Disney’s Dreamers Academy has shown a world of possibilities to 400 youth. The four-day program held in the world’s most creative classroom, Walt Disney World Resort, unites 100 high school students with entertainment experts, motivational speakers and world-class business professionals for a weekend of special events, educational workshops, personal enhancement and professional enrichment. Every year, Dreamers participate in “immersive” workshops concerning career paths ranging from Animation to Zoology, allowing them the opportunity to take a plunge into real-world career scenarios. Each participant learns important interview skills, communication techniques and networking strategies. With a focus on hands-on experience and training, Disney’s Dreamers Academy encourages youth to unlock their potential and DREAM BIG.

Among the hundreds of students Disney’s Dreamers Academy has helped catapult barriers to their dreams is Niki Dawson. A 2010 alumna, Niki followed her dream to sing and became a sensation on top television show “The Voice.” Dawson performed for the audience at the NABJ convention and spoke on her experience with Disney’s Dreamers Academy. “The American Idol Experience at Disney’s Dreamers Academy gave us a complete feel of the stage,” she said. “We were put in the spotlight and learned to work with cameras and media. It was awesome for me to learn how everything worked on stage and behind the scenes. That experience prepared me to get to where I am today.”

Disney’s Dreamers Academy has evolved into a year-round initiative with its informational Facebook and Twitter social media platforms, interactive website and presence at community outreach partner events like the Essence Music Festival, National Association of Black Journalists Convention and Bud Billiken Parade.

Nominations are open for the 2012 Disney’s Dreamers Academy. More information and an online application are available at www.disneysdreamersacademy.com. Students ages 13 to 19, living in the United States and enrolled in high school grades 9-12 when entering can be nominated. Nomination deadline is Oct. 31, 2011.

A distinguished panel of leaders from the communications, education and entertainment industries will judge the nomination submissions. Winners will be announced in early December. Participants and a parent or guardian will travel to Walt Disney World Resort for the 2012 Disney’s Dreamers Academy March 8-11, 2012.

Around the “Disney” World – Animation Courtyard

Around the "Disney" World - Animation Courtyard

Animation Courtyard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is THE place to get an up-close and personal look at the magic that has been created in Disney movies. Located on the right side of Disney’s Hollywood Studios around the middle of the park, you can find it by heading straight down Hollywood Boulevard and then turning right once you get to the Sorcerer’s Hat. Once you go under the archway you are in the Animation Courtyard.

Once inside the courtyard you will find a variety of activities that will open your eyes to the animation of Disney movies. You can go under the sea with Ariel, greet your favorite characters, have an opportunity to draw a Disney character under the tutelage of a real Disney artist in a studio, and play with favorite characters from Disney Junior.

Animation Courtyard houses the attraction The Magic of Disney Animation, which is the heart and soul of this area. You get to really see how Disney characters are developed here. You can also tour former artist studios, see artwork from the latest Disney films, and play in a fun, kid-friendly interactive area as well. Animation Academy is where you can go to draw a Disney character while being taught the tricks by a real Disney animator.

There are also two shows in Animation Courtyard: Voyage of the Little Mermaid and Disney Junior –  Live on Stage. These shows are great for kids and adults alike.  Voyage of the Little Mermaid is a show that uses a unique combination of dynamic puppetry, live performance, film clips and special effects, all combined to provide an abbreviated version of The Little Mermaid movie. Disney Junior is great for young kids who want to see their favorite Disney tv show characters like Handy Manny and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse characters come to life on stage.

You can also find unique shopping opportunities in Animation Courtyard, such as The Animation Gallery, In-Character (Disney’s Costume Shop), and The Studio Store. Inside the Animation Gallery you can find Disney film and cartoon cells, prints, drawings, collectible art, drawing books and supplies. At In-Character you can find Disney costumes, toys, games, clothing and accessories. The Studio Store  has toys, DVDs, a large amount of plush toys, collectibles, and sweet packaged snacks for gifts or while in the park.

In addition to the attractions and shows, Animation Courtyard offers excellent meet n greet opportunities — best of all they are indoors with seating areas and air conditioning. You can either go through the Studio Store or through Magic of Disney Animation. The characters are always those from the most recent Disney film. You can check your Times Guide when you enter the park for current information.

Tip: Visit at a time other than when the Magic of Disney Animation has just let out.

There are restrooms located in Animation Courtyard between the Voyage of the Little Mermaid and The Magic of Disney Animation.

I love people-watching and Animation Courtyard is one of my favorite spots to hang out. I love being around all that Disney art genius. I could spend hours and, if I had it, I would spend loads of money buying every piece that I have admired through the years.

Pop Warner Super Bowl Adds National Exposure through Multi-Year Extension with ESPN WWOS

Pop Warner Super Bowl Adds National Exposure through Multi-Year Extension with ESPN WWOS

Youth athletes competing in the Pop Warner Super Bowl will gain additional national exposure as part of a 10-year contract renewal with ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Under the contract extension, which runs through 2019, more than 40 hours of live game coverage and game action cut-ins will be shown on ESPN3.com. In addition, the Division I Midget national championship game will be aired on ESPN2 and other networks.

The expanded national coverage of the Pop Warner Super Bowl is the result of the ESPN rebranding of the 250-acre Disney sports complex, which included the addition of 40 high-definition video screens (three are jumbo screens), 56 high-definition cameras and a state-of-the-art HD and 3D Production Center with direct links to ESPN facilities in Bristol, Conn., New York and Los Angeles, which, collectively, gives more national exposure for the more than 350 events staged annually at the complex.

“We are thrilled to create more exposure nationally for the youth athletes who work so hard every season to reach the Pop Warner Super Bowl at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex,’’ said Ken Potrock, Senior Vice President of Disney Sports Enterprises and Downtown Disney. “Expanding the opportunities to showcase America’s youth athletes is just one of the many ways we are working with our key partners such as Pop Warner to help take youth sports to the next level.’’

The Pop Warner Super Bowl is part of the Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. (PWLS), the nation’s largest and oldest youth football, cheer and dance organization. The PWLS is a national non-profit organization that endorses and promotes teamwork, responsibility, leadership and scholastic achievement among young boys and girls ages 5 to 16.

“We’ve had a wonderful relationship with Disney for the past 14 years and we’re looking forward to continuing to work with them to make our event even better,” said Jon Butler, Executive Director, Pop Warner Little Scholars.  “With the re-branding and impactful technical upgrades from ESPN, the ESPN Wide World of Sports maintains its position as the best venue to host a youth sports event.”

Many NFL players got their starts playing Pop Warner football, including Maurice Jones-Drew (Jacksonville Jaguars), Adrian Peterson (Minnesota Vikings) and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow (Denver Broncos). The NFL Players Association estimates that roughly 70 percent of current NFL players have played Pop Warner football.

This year’s 55th annual Pop Warner Super Bowl (Dec. 3-10), which includes the Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Championships, will be held at Walt Disney World Resort for the 17th time, extending Disney’s decade-long association with the event. Walt Disney himself attended the 1959 Pop Warner title game when it was held in Anaheim, Ca.
