5 Tips for Vacation Planning with Kids

5 Tips for Vacation Planning with Kids

Many people choose Christmas time to give the gift of a Disney vacation, so now that the mouse is out of the stocking and your kids know about your Disney vacation…what do you do next? They are going to have a million questions and if you had a penny for every time they asked “how many more days?” you could pay off your trip in a jiffy.

So now that the kids know how do you keep them involved enough to stay excited about the vacation but not so involved that you regret telling them about the trip?

Here are 5 tips for Disney vacation planning with kids.

  1. Start a countdown calendar: This is the #1 thing you should do for the sake of everyone’s sanity. You can create a vacation ticker that will digitally tell you how many days till your trip or you can make a paper calendar that you can color, cross the days off, etc. There is a great widget directly from Disney that will give you a vacation countdown clock as well as up-to-date offers, information, wallpapers and animations and a weather checker. It’s very fun and interactive but can be quite distracting and if your little one doesn’t have a computer of their own this could be burdensome to you to pull it up everyday and show them. Printable calendars are available and customizable. You can choose from a wide variety of characters and have your kids color them in or print them already colored. Hang it on the fridge with a pen or marker to “X” off the days.
  2. Order a vacation planning DVD. There is nothing like a visual aid to portray an experience and get you excited. The Disney Vacation Planning DVD’s (as well as Disney Cruise Line) are free and easy to order. Just go to the website and generate an account, put in your information and wait for it to come in the mail! They do take a little while so this is something you should pre-order if you want to give it as a way to tell someone you’re going to Disney.
  3. Make your customized maps. These maps are a great keepsake and you can order a new set every 6 months. These also take time to ship but are free and beautiful and something you can treasure! If you want to start letting your kids familiarize themselves with the parks and what they have to offer there are printable maps and online pdf’s of park maps. You can also view photos and get more information about each of the attractions on the Disney website.
  4. Pick your poison. There are so many things to see, do and collect you can quickly grow weary of your kids running your vacation. Here are a few good things for your kids to collect in the parks: Pressed pennies: these are wide spread through all the parks and cost .51 cents per penny. Yes, it costs you .50 to get a penny, but it’s pressed with a Disney character and can provide a really special memory. There are keepsake books to keep your pennies in and you can build your collection over the year. Character Autographs: You will find Disney autograph books for purchase at every retail location, but it can also be fun to have a personalized, customized autograph book for your child to collect their character autographs. I actually love making these! You can see some of my work on my facebook page. All of my books are custom made with heavy duty cardstock and double laminated…no one wants their memories melting away in the rain! For my friends at Chip and Co, anyone who books their vacation with me will receive these customized autograph books at no charge!
  5. Plan your attack: Santa may have come and gone but your Disney trip hasn’t and there’s no shame in using your pre-trip time to your advantage. Use your upcoming trip to prepare your children for what is to come. This came in handy when we were trying to teach my stepson responsibility and to get himself dressed in the mornings. “When we’re in Disney you are going to have to get ready quickly so we can get into the parks, so let’s start practicing…” This works in any situation you’re facing a struggle with “If you don’t eat all your food the characters won’t come to the table”, “if you are pouting it will make Mickey Mouse upset”. The possibilities are endless. This will also set a tone for what behavior is expected in the parks.

These are just a few ways to prepare your kids for their vacation. If you need help preparing for yours, I am a Disney Authorized Travel Agent and I’m more than happy to do all the work so you can have all the fun!  All my services are free and will make your trip Pixie Perfect, email me for more information: [email protected]

Disney Dining Comparison: Tables in Wonderland vs. Disney Dining Plan

Disney Dining Comparison: Tables in Wonderland vs. Disney Dining Plan

A recent discussion came up the other day that we thought would be interesting to explore.  Which is better: Tables in Wonderland (and out of pocket expenses) or signing up for the Disney Dining Plan?

For those that aren’t aware, the Tables in Wonderland program is a special discount card that you purchase to get 20% off of dining costs at various restaurants at the Walt Disney World dining locations.  However, there are some things that you need to know about the TiW program:

1.     The TiW card can only be purchased by a person that has an annual pass, or by a Florida Resident.

2.     The card costs $75 for Annual Passholders, and $100 for Florida Residents.

3.     As I mentioned, the TiW program will discount 20% off of all your food and drink purchases (including alcohol) at many of the Walt Disney World restaurants, but not all of them.

4.     The TiW card can be used for the cardholder and up to nine guests dining with the cardholder.

5.     An automatic 18% gratuity is included when using the TiW card, regardless of the size of the party.

6.     If you are thinking of buying the TiW card, you need to do some research to make sure that the discount will be at least equal to the cost you are paying for the card.

On the other side of the equation, the Disney Dining Plan has several different choices available.  The three main ones are the Disney Quick Service Dining Plan; the original Disney Dining Plan, and the Disney Deluxe Dining Plan.  You can also add the Wine and Dine component to your Dining Plan or Deluxe Dining Plan, but that is a separate add-on charge.  Here are some things you need to know about the regular Disney Dining Plan:

1.     For the regular DDP, you will receive one snack, one quick service meal, and one table service meal per day.

2.     With the DDP, you must select the plan for every day that you are visiting Disney, and the DDP is only available to people that are staying on a Disney property.

3.     In addition, each member of your party needs to be on the dining plan.  You can’t pick and choose.

4.     You get one credit for each of the types of meal (or snack) for each day.  You can choose to use all of them in one day, if you like, or you can space them out so that you have credits for each day.

For my family, we have always had the regular Disney Dining Plan.  There have been times when we got it for free based on when we came down on vacation, and there have been times when we paid for it.

This year, though, things are different.  Last June we became Disney Vacation Club owners, and as a result, this year we are staying at Bay Lake Towers, one of the DVC resorts available to us.  The room that we reserved is a 2 bedroom suite, and will sleep 9 people, which is the number of people in our party.  As a result, we made the decision really quickly that we were going to pay for our meals out of pocket.  Our room has a full kitchen, so as a result, we are planning on only having three sit down meals during our visit.  If we had wanted to do the Dining Plan, it would have cost my family (I am responsible for 5 of the guests) $1,371.65 for our stay, and it would have cost my sister-in-law’s family $1,049.72!  If we did the quick service plan, it still would have been about $1,800 for the two families combined.

So for us, having 9 people eating at Akershus and 50’s Prime Time Café, and 5 of us eating at Boma, the discount will more than make up for the $75 cost (we will be buying three annual passes as well!)

While I don’t have the final tally of what our costs for dining will be, I’m going to make a conservative estimate that we would save at least $750 by going the OOP/TiW route over what we would pay for the DDP.  When we get down there, I’m going to keep our receipts, and work up the final numbers after we get back!  Thanks for reading!

Disney in Pictures: Disneyland Paris at Christmas

The Disneyland Resort Paris has undergone its traditional Christmas makeover, with millions of lights, dozens of Christmas trees and a smattering of fake snow being employed to generate a festive atmosphere. The resort’s holiday celebrations are closer to those of Walt Disney World than the Disneyland Resort, with few of the holiday overlays for major attractions seen at the California park. However, a number of special shows, meet-and-greets and parades are laid on as part of the Enchanted Christmas events.

Disney in Pictures: Disneyland Paris at Christmas

The Christmas celebrations are very much focused on Disneyland Park, with sister park Walt Disney Studios receiving only a few token decorations. The entrance to Disneyland Paris, which sees guests pass underneath the Disneyland Hotel, offers some clues as to what is in store. However, it is not until they reach the Town Square that the full effect of the holiday additions can be seen.

Disney in Pictures: Disneyland Paris at Christmas

The area is dominated by an enormous Christmas tree, surrounded by oversized toys and presents. These offer visitors the chance to snap some impressive photographs, before they set off up Main Street USA towards Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Disney in Pictures: Disneyland Paris at Christmas

For once, the view back down the street towards the entrance is almost as impressive as the one towards the hub of the park. A Christmas tree lighting ceremony later in the day attracts a large audience, and is worth the wait.

Disney in Pictures: Disneyland Paris at Christmas

Sleeping Beauty Castle itself, though, is still by far the most beautiful element of a visually-stunning park. In addition to its usual surroundings of pretty waterfalls and novelty-shaped trees, during the Enchanted Christmas events a layer of “snow” adds to the appeal.

Disney in Pictures: Disneyland Paris at Christmas

The castle is lit up at night during a ceremony hosted by Princess Aurora, which sees her godmothers illuminate it in three different colors. The ceremony itself is forgettable (and thankfully quite short), but the 400,000 lights look stunning. They are joined by 4 powerful searchlights, just in case anyone has failed to notice the spectacular display in front of them.

Disney in Pictures: Disneyland Paris at Christmas

No Disney Christmas event would be complete without a visit from Santa himself, and Disneyland Paris has done a reasonable job of transforming the Woody’s Round-up area into Santa’s Village. Kids can queue up to make their Christmas requests surrounded by friendly snowmen, and joined occasionally by characters including Pluto and Winnie the Pooh.

Disney in Pictures: Disneyland Paris at Christmas

Hosted in the nearby Chaparral Theatre is the Mickey’s Winter Wonderland show, a bizarre combination of an ice skating display, sing-along and western-style hoe-down. Adults may find the limited plot and over-the-top acting a little painful, but it’s difficult to resist tapping along to the festive tunes.

Disney in Pictures: Disneyland Paris at Christmas

Another addition during the Christmas season at Disneyland Paris is Belle’s Christmas Village, located towards the rear of the sprawling Fantasyland. Although largely made up of stalls selling merchandise that can be found elsewhere in the park, it does add a holiday-themed element to a land that is otherwise left largely untouched during the holidays.

Disney in Pictures: Disneyland Paris at Christmas

Disneyland Paris doesn’t offer a full Christmas parade, but it does tack on a couple of extra floats to the standard Disney’s Once Upon a Dream parade. These are barely worth the wait, but watching Santa’s sleigh pass in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle is admittedly a pretty sight.

Disney in Pictures: Disneyland Paris at Christmas

Over at Walt Disney Studios, the celebrations are much more stilted. There are no special holiday events or shows, and none of the attractions feature holiday overlays. This year, the resort has given up entirely on decorating the interior of the park, instead focusing on making the entrance area look the part.

Disney in Pictures: Disneyland Paris at Christmas

There is at least one great photo opportunity in the park itself, with Walt and Mickey welcoming guests as they exit Studio 1. Overall, though, Walt Disney Studios remains the inferior partner to Disneyland Park in almost every sense.

While it would be nice to see a few more holiday additions to Disneyland Paris (such as an overlay for the Phantom Manor), it is a great place to get into the Christmas spirit. Hopefully next year will see additional efforts made at Walt Disney Studios, as well as announcements of new attractions to bring the resort’s second gate up to the same standard as its magnificent neighbor.

ABC Family’s Jane By Design Syle Challenge Round 5

ABC Family's Jane By Design Syle Challenge Round 5

Round 5 of ABC Family’s Jane By Design Style Challenge is on right now and the task was pretty fun!  The email came from Jane herself, who by the way sounds super sweet! Can’t wait to get to know her in her all new show, Jane By Design premiering on ABC Family Jan. 3rd.   Here was is this rounds challenge instructions:

“Take the white shirt out of your trunk and put it on your dress form.  Using accessories from your own collection (or anything else you can think of), show how you would style the shirt for a day at the office.   Then, change the look entirely and show me how you would style the same shirt for a dressy cocktail party.  Post photos of both styles to your blog, and write an entry explaining what you did to create each look.  Ask your readers to share their day-to-night styling tips here and mention the name of your blog.  I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with!”

For a day at the office you want to look nice, but still be comfortable.  What you wear must be functional but in  a fashion industry position still trendy.  Since scarfs, in all seasons, seem to be all the rage I wanted to incorporate one into our daytime look.  They are function too, it will keep you nice and warm on a chilly day at the office but it is easily removed if it gets a bit warm.  I added a brown braided belt to the waist making a white button down shirt a lot more feminine by adding shape to the body.  I also added some dangling earrings in gold tones to pick up on colors in the scarf.  Pair this shirt with a dark navy skinny pant and a pair of brown boots and you are set for a day at the office!

ABC Family's Jane By Design Syle Challenge Round 5   ABC Family's Jane By Design Syle Challenge Round 5

ABC Family's Jane By Design Syle Challenge Round 5

After a long day at the office you may not have enough time to go home and change looks entirely before heading to a work cocktail party.  If you just throw a few accessories and a different pair of shoes into a day bag you can quickly change in the bathroom or car before you arrive at the party! For my nighttime look I opened up the white button down shirt a few buttons.  I made sure to have a grey lace cami underneath.  Then over the white shirt I added a grey crop vest that has some really pretty frilly details on it.  You can leave on the dark navy skinny pants and change the shoes into a grey heel with some flower embellishments on them.  For jewelry swap out the daytime earrings with something a little longer – I opted for gold earings with pink on them to pull some feminine colors into the outfit. I also added longer necklaces in the same tones as the earrings.  After a long day your hair might need an update.  So I completed our look with a pink lacey bow that you can add just below your bun on on the side of your head pulling a little hair back.

Do you have any day to night style tips to share?  Do you carry extra jewelry with you to spruce up your look or maybe take your makeup bag everywhere you go?  I would love for you to share on the Jane By Design Facebook Wall HERE, make sure you mention Chip and Co. sent you!  It really helps us out when you comment so please feel free to share!
