Disney World VoluntEARS Gives Students Back-to-School Support

Disney VoluntEARS Give Students Back-to-School Support

Great news!  Walt Disney World Resort cast members collected a record 2.1 million school supplies during their annual back-to-school supply drive. The items, ranging from pencils to notebook paper, are classroom essentials that will help thousands of Central Florida students start the school year off right.

Last week, Disney VoluntEARS distributed nearly 14,000 backpacks filled with 1,810,000 million school supplies to 19 schools and community centers throughout Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Polk and Lake counties.

As part of these efforts, VoluntEARS teamed up with S.T.A.R.S. (Supplies to Assist Our Students) of West Orange to welcome families at Meet-the-Teacher events at several local public elementary schools and give out backpacks filled with school supplies. View highlights below.

Additionally, VoluntEARS gave approximately 377,815 school supplies to A Gift For Teaching’s free store so that local teachers can put them to use in their classrooms.

While these new school supplies may seem like a small gesture, they make a world of difference to the students who are receiving them in a time of record need in Central Florida.

Ka-chow! Send a Hello Forever Stamps Salute Disney-Pixar Characters

Ka-chow! Send a Hello Forever Stamps Salute Disney-Pixar Characters

Hello” is a simple, everyday word. Today, it has a new meaning as the U.S. Postal Service issues the Send a Hello Forever stamps to connect family and friends through the power of the mail.

The new Send a Hello Forever stamps feature the characters of five popular movies created by Disney-Pixar Animation Studios: Buzz Lightyear and two green, three-eyed aliens from Toy Story; Lightning McQueen and Mater from Cars; Remy the rat and Linguini from Ratatouille; the robot Wall-E from Wall-E; and Carl Fredricksen and Dug from Up. The stamps are on sale today in Post Offices nationwide, online at usps.com and by calling 800-782-6724.

“For more than 25 years, Disney-Pixar storytellers have given us characters who have shown us the wonder of friendship and family,” said Deputy Postmaster General Ronald Stroman. “With this new stamp pane, the U.S. Postal Service is very proud to honor the art of Pixar’s talented team of animators, and at the same time, help our customers communicate the way they care, through the power of the U.S. Mail.”

“Taking the time to slow down and send a hello through the mail is a simple and special gift to both the sender and the recipient,” Stroman said.

Joining Stroman to dedicate the stamps were James Bilbray, member, Board of Governors, U.S. Postal Service; and John Lasseter, chief creative officer, Walt Disney Studios and Pixar Animation Studios.

The stamps were designed by art directors Terrence McCaffrey and William Gicker together with Ben Butcher at Disney-Pixar and Dave Pacheco at Disney Consumer Products.

The Send a Hello Forever stamps are an outgrowth of the Art of Disney stamp series issued between 2004 and 2008. Originally a series of three annual issuances depicting friendship, celebration and romance, the Art of Disney stamps proved so popular that the Postal Service expanded the series in 2007 and 2008.

Toy Story characters are coming back to the big screen later this year!

Toy Story characters are coming back to the big screen later this year!

Great news for Toy Story Fans. Disney/Pixar released via their twitter the other day details on the new Toy Story short “Small Fry” being released before the Muppets Movie this November.

In the latest Toy Story Toon, Buzz Lightyear is left behind at a fast food restaurant when a kids’ meal toy version of Buzz takes his place. While Bonnie’s toys are stuck with the annoying 3-inch-tall Buzz impersonator, the real Buzz is trapped in the restaurant at a support group for discarded toys. As Woody and the gang devise a way to rescue their friend, Buzz tries to escape the toy psychotherapy meeting.

So are you going to see the Muppets Movie? Did you check out Cars 2 this past June and see the Barbie & Ken Short Hawaiian Vacation? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.

Around the “Disney” World – Rafiki’s Planet Watch

wildlife express train
Train to Rafiki's Planet Watch

Located just next to the Kilimanjaro Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is an overlooked gem of the Disney Parks: The Rafiki Planet Watch Conservation Station.  Accessible by the “Harambe Railway Station Wildlife Express” train, this short train ride carries up to 250 passengers from Harambe to Rafiki’s Planet Watch, a conservation station, affection section, and more where guests can come up close and personal with many different animals and their holders and caregivers.

One you depart the train at Rafiki’s Planet Watch, you walk through a short trail, passing monkeys and other exhibits to spark your interest before you fully enter the Conservation Station.  For the youngsters, or children at heart, there is a wonderful petting zoo, cleverly named as the “Affection Section.

Affection Section
Goats lounging around

If you strike up a conversation with any of the cast members walking around, you’ll find that they’re a wealth of knowledge and even have names for all of the individual animals!  If you’re lucky, you might be able to catch an outside show and tell with different animals.  On our last trip, we saw a handler with a vulture, only feet in front of us!

Animal interaction
Echidna inside the Conservation Station

Inside the Conservation Station, you’ll find working veterinary labs, where they study the Animal Kingdom animals, among many other things.  Make sure to look closely as there are over 100 Hidden Mickeys around the station!  Also, there are different exhibits during the day – live animals that you can get up close with the animal and a handler, filled with personal experiences and details about animals.  Though often these animals are not to be touched, you can learn about them in an up close and personal environment.

If you’re simply looking for a nice place to cool down on a hot day, the Conservation is a large air conditioned building to relax.  Another of my favorite aspects of RPW  – Character Interaction.  As hosted, Rafiki often stops by to greet guests with other environmentalist friends like Jimminy Cricket and Pocahontas.

“Planes” An All-New Animated Feature Film From Disneytoon Studios

“Planes” An All-New Animated Feature Film From Disneytoon Studios

Dusty, the small-town crop-duster from DisneyToon Studios‘ upcoming feature “Planes,” has found his voice: Emmy Award®-winning actor Jon Cryer, lands the role of the daring dreamer who takes on the most notoriously grueling air race in history, and in the process gives a spellbound world the inspiration to soar. “Planes,” an all-new, CG-animated comedy action adventure, flies into homes on Blu-ray™ and DVD in Spring 2013.

“We are incredibly excited to have Jon Cryer on board as the voice of Dusty,” said John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios. “Jon brings so much comedy and believability to this character who dreams of soaring alongside his heroes in the ‘Wings Around the Globe’ Rally. ‘Planes’ is a wonderful story that takes audiences on a great ride and Jon brings so much heart to the film.”

Cryer has starred in the hit CBS series “Two and a Half Men” for seven years, winning an Emmy® in 2003 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. His credits also include films like “Due Date,” “Hot Shots” and “Pretty in Pink.”

Dusty lives in the small town of Propwash Junction, and the single-prop agriculture plane could not be further from the lean, mean, trophy-winning machines he idolizes – and his co-workers remind him constantly. His mentor Skipper is convinced that Dusty has the engine to compete with the best, and helps encourage him to pursue his lifelong dreams. But if Dusty wants to make his dreams a reality, he?ll need to push himself further than he ever imagined. With the help and support of a crew of all-new and hilarious characters, Dusty wings his way into the biggest challenge of his life.

Planes,” set to introduce audiences to an entirely new and hilarious crew of daredevils from every corner of the globe, draws inspiration from the immensely popular world of Disney•Pixar’s “Cars.” Created, written and produced by DisneyToon Studios under the creative leadership of John Lasseter and directed by Emmy® nominated Klay Hall, “Planes” takes off with an international cast of the fastest air racers around, in a comedy packed with action and adventure.

Fasten your seatbelt and secure your carry-on items, more information on “Planes” will be arriving shortly.
